Birth and family
Burkely Duffield was born on August 9, 1992, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.[2] As of November 2025, he is 33 years old.[2] Duffield grew up in Vancouver alongside his siblings, including his younger sister Victoria Duffield, an actress and singer who gained recognition as a Top 6 competitor on YTV's The Next Star and through releases with Warner Music Canada.[4] He also has an older brother, Mitchell Duffield, who works as an actor with credits in productions such as Smallville and Strange Empire.[5]Entry into acting
Duffield displayed an early interest in performing arts, often acting out elaborate scenes with toys such as action figures and stuffed animals, creating narratives inspired by movies like pitting Batman against Spider-Man.[6] His parents observed this intuitive flair for acting from a young age, noting his natural tendency to perform around the house and encouraging his creative pursuits.[6] Duffield attended Yale Secondary School, where he was involved in the drama and improv clubs.[4] As a youth, he also enjoyed swimming and competed on his high school team.[7] Duffield made his acting debut at age 14, portraying Jonathan Chandler in the 2006 TV movie Under the Mistletoe.[1]Acting career
Early roles and breakthrough
Duffield began his acting career at the age of 14 with his screen debut as Jonathan Chandler in the 2006 TV movie Under the Mistletoe, a holiday drama directed by John Bradshaw.[8] This initial role marked his entry into the industry, portraying the son of a widowed mother navigating life after loss.[8] In 2007, Duffield secured supporting roles in two feature films, building his on-screen experience. He appeared as the young version of the protagonist, Ghost at 12 years old, in the action-adventure Pathfinder, directed by Marcus Nispel and starring Karl Urban. That same year, he played Young Hudson Milbank in the comedy-drama Numb, a semi-autobiographical story about a screenwriter's existential crisis, led by Matthew Perry.[9] These early film appearances provided Duffield with exposure in larger productions while he continued to develop his craft as a teenager. Duffield's television presence grew with a guest spot in 2012, portraying Ray McAnn in the episode "Party On, Garth" of the CW series Supernatural, where he depicted a character entangled in a supernatural lore hunt. His breakthrough came shortly after with the recurring main role of Eddie Miller in the Nickelodeon mystery series House of Anubis from 2011 to 2013. Introduced in season 2 as the rebellious son of a detective, Eddie became a central figure in the show's ensemble, solving ancient Egyptian puzzles at a British boarding school. The series, a co-production filmed primarily in Liverpool, England, required Duffield to relocate temporarily from Canada, immersing him in an international production environment. The role in House of Anubis significantly elevated Duffield's profile, garnering him international recognition through Nickelodeon's global broadcast and fanbase, which spanned the UK, US, and beyond. Airing across three seasons (in which he appeared in 79 episodes), the series' popularity as a teen mystery-drama provided Duffield with his first substantial lead exposure, paving the way for increased opportunities in North American television and film.Major projects and recent work
Duffield gained prominence with his lead role as Holden Matthews in the Freeform sci-fi thriller series Beyond (2017–2018), where he portrayed a young man awakening from a 12-year coma to discover supernatural abilities amid a conspiracy.[10] The series, which ran for two seasons, allowed Duffield to demonstrate his dramatic range in high-stakes action sequences and emotional depth, earning praise for his commanding presence in the genre.[11] In film, Duffield appeared as Callan Lothar, the son of a key warrior, in the fantasy epic Warcraft (2016), directed by Duncan Jones, contributing to the adaptation's ensemble of human and orc characters in a battle for Azeroth.[12] He followed this with the role of Alex, the supportive boyfriend of a volleyball star, in the biographical sports drama The Miracle Season (2018), based on the true story of a high school team's resilience after tragedy.[13] He reprised his guest appearances on Supernatural as Billy Whitman in the 2019 episode "Atomic Monsters".[2] Expanding into streaming platforms, Duffield played Caleb Greeley, an openly gay football player entangled in a masked killer's terror, in the Netflix horror film There's Someone Inside Your House (2021), adapted from Stephanie Perkins' novel and emphasizing themes of secrets and vulnerability among teens.[14] This project marked his entry into major original content for the service, blending slasher elements with social commentary. He also starred as Ben Holmes in the Hallmark mystery film Nikki & Nora: Sister Sleuths (2022).[2] More recently, Duffield portrayed Brad, a ghost seeking justice for his overdose death, in the Netflix supernatural series Dead Boy Detectives (2024), part of the DC universe and highlighting his fit in ensemble-driven fantasy narratives with recurring supernatural investigations.[15] Post-2018, Duffield's career has evolved toward more mature, lead-oriented roles across genres, showcasing versatility from fantasy battles in Warcraft to intimate horrors in There's Someone Inside Your House and dramatic ensembles like Dead Boy Detectives.
