Caleb Chukwuemeka
Chigoziem Caleb Chukwuemeka (born 25 January 2002) is an English professional footballer who plays as a forward. He is currently a free agent, having last played for AC Bellinzona in the Swiss Challenge League.[1][2] Born in Eisenstadt, Austria, to Nigerian parents, Chukwuemeka relocated to England during his childhood and holds citizenship eligibility for England, Nigeria, and Austria.[1][3] Standing at 1.90 meters tall and primarily deployed as a left winger or centre-forward, he is right-footed and known for his pace and goal-scoring ability in lower-tier competitions.[4] He is the older brother of Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka. Chukwuemeka's career began at Northampton Town, with a loan to non-league Corby Town in early 2020, where he made three appearances and scored once, followed by his professional debut for Northampton later that year.[3] In August 2021, he joined Aston Villa's U23 team, representing the club in Premier League 2 until mid-2022, during which he had a loan spell at Scottish Premiership club Livingston from January to June 2022, appearing in 9 senior matches.[2] Returning to Aston Villa's youth setup for the 2022–23 season, he was loaned to EFL League Two's Crawley Town, where he featured in 14 league games without scoring.[2][5] After his release from Aston Villa in summer 2023, Chukwuemeka signed with Slovenian Second League club Tabor Sežana on 25 February 2024, making 8 appearances and scoring 2 goals during the 2023–24 season.[2] In July 2024, he transferred to Swiss second-division outfit AC Bellinzona on a one-year contract, becoming a regular starter and scoring 2 goals in 13 appearances during the 2024–25 season, including on his debut on 26 July 2024; his contract expired on 1 July 2025, leaving him as a free agent as of November 2025.[6][7] Despite his progression through various youth and senior levels, Chukwuemeka has yet to earn a senior international cap for any nation.[1]Early life
Family background
Caleb Chukwuemeka was born on 25 January 2002 in Eisenstadt, Austria, to Nigerian parents of Igbo descent.[1][8] His family relocated to England shortly after his birth, settling in the Northampton area where he spent his early childhood.[9][10] Chukwuemeka has a younger brother, Carney Chukwuemeka, born on 20 October 2003, who is also a professional footballer currently playing for Borussia Dortmund after a previous stint at Chelsea.[11][12] The brothers grew up with shared family encouragement toward football, rooted in their parents' Nigerian Igbo heritage and cultural values.[8][13]Youth development
Chukwuemeka attended Northampton School for Boys, where he developed his football talents under the guidance of director of sport Jamie Wilcock over five seasons. He excelled in the school's teams, scoring 38 goals while playing versatile roles, primarily as a centre-midfielder, number 10, or striker, and contributing to an unbeaten county champion side alongside several Northampton Town academy players.[14] Supported by his Nigerian immigrant parents, Chukwuemeka was scouted from school and joined the Northampton Town academy as a youth player, progressing through the ranks as a promising forward.[14] In February 2020, at age 18, he was sent on his first loan to non-league Corby Town of the Northern Premier League Division One South, where he made three appearances and scored one goal during the play-offs.[15][1] Throughout his time in the Northampton Town academy, Chukwuemeka focused on honing his forward skills, including physicality, ball control, and goal-scoring ability, while growing to a height of 190 cm (6 ft 3 in) that enhanced his presence on the pitch.[14][1]Club career
Northampton Town
Chukwuemeka joined Northampton Town's academy at a young age and gained initial senior experience through a youth loan to Corby Town in February 2020, where he made three appearances and scored once in the Northern Premier League Division One South East.[15] He returned to Northampton and broke into the first team during the 2020–21 EFL League Two season at age 18, making his senior debut as a late substitute in a 2–2 draw against AFC Wimbledon on 12 September 2020.[16] Over the course of the campaign, he featured in 28 matches across all competitions, contributing 2 goals and 1 assist while showcasing his versatility as a forward.[17] A highlight of his breakthrough season was scoring his first goal for Northampton in a 5–0 EFL Trophy group stage victory over Southampton U23 on 6 October 2020, finishing neatly from a cross in the 50th minute.[18] He followed this with his maiden league goal later that month, sweeping in a first-time effort to secure a 3–2 win at Wigan Athletic on 31 October 2020, a result that boosted Northampton's survival bid in League Two.[19] These performances demonstrated his clinical finishing and growing confidence in professional football. By June 2021, Chukwuemeka's form had drawn interest from Scottish Premiership side Rangers, who were reportedly prepared to pursue a low-cost transfer amid his contract situation.[20] His time at Northampton concluded with a permanent move to Premier League club Aston Villa in August 2021 for an undisclosed fee, allowing him to reunite with his younger brother Carney in the Villa academy.[21]Aston Villa
Chukwuemeka signed for Aston Villa in August 2021 from Northampton Town for an undisclosed fee, joining the club's academy and reuniting with his younger brother Carney, who was already developing in the youth ranks.[21] He quickly integrated into the U21 team, competing in the Premier League 2, where he showcased his potential by scoring five goals in three matches during September 2021, earning the division's Player of the Month award.[22] To gain senior experience, Chukwuemeka was loaned to Scottish Premiership club Livingston in January 2022 until the end of the 2021–22 season.[23] He made nine appearances for Livingston but faced challenges adapting to the physical demands and pace of Scottish football, resulting in limited starts and overall playing time.[24] In August 2022, Chukwuemeka moved on another loan to League Two side Crawley Town for the 2022–23 season, aiming for more regular minutes to further his development. During his stint, he featured in 14 matches, recording one assist and contributing to the team's efforts in a competitive lower-tier environment focused on building consistency. Despite these loan spells providing valuable exposure, Chukwuemeka did not secure a place in Aston Villa's first team over his three-year tenure. He was released by the club at the end of June 2023 upon the expiry of his contract.[25][1]Tabor Sežana
After being released by Aston Villa in June 2023 and spending time as a free agent, Chukwuemeka signed his first professional contract abroad with NK Tabor Sežana of the Slovenian Second League (2. SNL) in February 2024.[1] The move marked his transition to European football outside England, joining the club on a free transfer until the end of the 2023–24 season.[26] Chukwuemeka made his debut for Tabor Sežana on 2 March 2024, coming on as a substitute in a 4–1 away defeat to NK Brinje Grosuplje. Over the remainder of the campaign, he featured in 8 league matches as a forward and left winger, adapting to the physical and tactical demands of the 2. SNL by contributing 2 goals and 1 assist.[17] His goals came in a single match on 9 March 2024, scoring a brace in a 3–1 home victory over ND Bilje—his first professional goals abroad—with strikes in the 39th and 47th minutes to help secure the win. Playing for a Tabor side that finished 15th in the 16-team 2. SNL table, narrowly avoiding relegation to the third tier with 30 points from 30 matches, Chukwuemeka provided attacking impetus amid the team's defensive struggles, conceding 59 goals overall. His contributions helped stabilize the forward line during a relegation battle, though the club ended the season just one point above the drop zone. Chukwuemeka departed Tabor Sežana at the end of the 2023–24 season upon the expiration of his short-term contract, paving the way for his next professional move.[1]AC Bellinzona
In the summer of 2024, Chukwuemeka transferred to Swiss Challenge League club AC Bellinzona from NK Tabor Sežana on a free transfer, signing a two-year contract ahead of the 2024–25 season.[27] During his time at Bellinzona, the 190 cm forward made 13 appearances across all competitions, including 10 in the league and 3 in the Swiss Cup, while contributing 2 goals (1 in the league and 1 in the Swiss Cup).[7][28] His physical presence as a tall striker allowed him to adapt to the physical demands of the second tier, building on his prior experience in Slovenia's second division with Tabor Sežana.[1][4] Chukwuemeka was released by Bellinzona on 1 July 2025 at the end of his contract, becoming a free agent.[1][29] As of November 2025, he remains without a club, marking the latest chapter in his progression through European lower leagues.[1]Personal life
Family
Caleb Chukwuemeka maintains a close bond with his younger brother, Carney Chukwuemeka, having progressed together through the youth academies of Northampton Town and Aston Villa before Carney's transfer to Chelsea in August 2022, where he has since become a key midfielder.[14][30] The siblings, born in Austria and having moved to England at a young age, exhibit a dynamic of mutual encouragement and friendly rivalry that has fueled their parallel paths in professional football.[31] The Chukwuemeka family's Nigerian heritage has profoundly shaped the brothers' careers, instilling values of perseverance and family unity that guide their athletic pursuits.[14] Their parents provide continuous support, with father Charles notably attending nearly all of their schoolboy matches—around 70 per brother over five years—and personally funding Easter training tours to Phoenix, Arizona, to aid their development.[14] This dedicated involvement remains integral to Caleb's ongoing professional endeavors. Beyond his parents and brother, no other family members have gained public prominence in connection with Caleb's career.National team eligibility
Caleb Chukwuemeka was born in Eisenstadt, Austria, on 25 January 2002, to parents of Nigerian Igbo descent, before moving to England at a young age where he was raised.[1][31] This heritage confers him eligibility to represent the senior national teams of Austria by virtue of his birthplace, Nigeria through his parental lineage, and England based on prolonged residency and upbringing since childhood.[32] As of November 2025, Chukwuemeka has not made any senior international appearances for any nation. His involvement at youth international level has been limited, with no recorded caps across eligible associations, likely prioritizing his club development during formative years. Chukwuemeka remains uncapped at all levels. In contrast, his younger brother Carney has pursued an international path with England, earning multiple youth caps including at U19 and U20 levels, underscoring their distinct trajectories despite shared eligibility options.Career statistics
