A color appearance model (CAM) is a mathematical framework that transforms physical measurements of light stimuli and viewing conditions into numerical correlates of human perceptual color attributes, such as lightness, brightness, chroma, colorfulness, hue, and saturation.[1] These models extend beyond basic colorimetry, which relies on tristimulus values like CIE XYZ to specify colors in a device-independent manner, by incorporating the effects of visual adaptation, context, and non-linear perceptual processes to predict how colors are actually seen by observers.[2] The primary purpose of CAMs is to enable accurate color reproduction and evaluation across diverse media and environments, such as imaging systems, displays, and prints, where viewing conditions like illuminant, background, and surround luminance can alter appearance.[3] Key components typically include a chromatic adaptation transform (CAT) to handle changes in illumination, cone response calculations based on the CIE 1931 standard colorimetric observer, and opponent color mechanisms that model post-receptoral processing in the visual system.[1] This allows for predictions of phenomena like simultaneous contrast, the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect, and adaptation to different white points, ensuring perceptual uniformity in applications from color management to computer graphics.[4] Notable CAMs have been developed by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), with CIECAM02—published in 2002—serving as a widely adopted standard that simplified earlier models like CIECAM97s while improving predictions of attributes under varied surrounds.[1] In 2022, the CIE recommended CIECAM16 as a successor, which refines CIECAM02 through a unified adaptation space, a generalized von Kries transform (CAT16), and enhanced handling of luminance nonlinearity, achieving better accuracy in perceptual correlates (e.g., mean coefficient of variation for colorfulness reduced to 18.2%) and supporting uniform color spaces for difference evaluation.[4][5] CIECAM16 is particularly suited for color management systems in imaging industries, facilitating cross-media workflows by addressing limitations in handling related colors and extreme viewing conditions.[5]Fundamentals
Color appearance
Color appearance refers to the way colors are perceived by the human visual system in response to physical light stimuli, encompassing attributes such as lightness, chroma, and hue as influenced by contextual factors including illumination level, surrounding field, and background.[6] Unlike objective physical measurements, color appearance captures subjective perceptual experiences that vary with viewing conditions, making it essential for applications in imaging, design, and display technologies.[7] Colorimetry, the science of quantifying color physically, relies on tristimulus values such as CIE XYZ to define colors in a device-independent framework based on human color matching functions.[8] These values ensure that colors can be specified and reproduced consistently across devices without dependence on specific hardware, but they do not predict how a color will appear perceptually.[9] For instance, the same XYZ values may yield different perceived colors under dim versus bright illumination or against contrasting backgrounds, highlighting the limitations of pure colorimetry for real-world perception.[6] The foundations of color science trace back to the 19th century, when Hermann von Helmholtz and James Clerk Maxwell conducted pioneering experiments on color matching, demonstrating that human vision operates trichromatically through combinations of red, green, and blue primaries.[10] Helmholtz's theory of three retinal receptors responsive to different wavelength bands, building on Thomas Young's earlier ideas, provided the perceptual basis for distinguishing physical stimuli from their appearance, paving the way for appearance modeling beyond mere matching.[8] This distinction underscores that while colorimetry measures "what is there," color appearance models address "how it looks," accounting for the brain's processing of contextual cues.[7]Appearance parameters

The six primary appearance parameters—lightness (J), brightness (Q), chroma (C), colorfulness (M), hue (h), and saturation (s)—provide a comprehensive description of how a color stimulus is perceived, extending beyond tristimulus values like those in CIE XYZ.[11] Lightness (J) represents the perceived relative brightness of a color compared to a reference white, scaled typically from 0 (black) to 100 (white); it reflects the surface's apparent reflectance under the given illumination and is tied to the black-white opponent channel in the visual system.[12] Brightness (Q), in contrast, captures the absolute perceived amount of light emitted or reflected by the stimulus, integrating lightness with the state of luminance adaptation; unlike J, which is relative to the adapting white, Q varies with absolute luminance levels and also aligns with the black-white opponent channel.[11] For instance, in dim viewing conditions, a mid-gray surface may exhibit lower brightness but similar lightness to brighter conditions.[12] Chroma (C) quantifies the purity or intensity of a color relative to a neutral gray of the same lightness, emphasizing how distinct the color appears from achromatic stimuli; it is computed from the magnitudes of the red-green and yellow-blue opponent channels.[12] Colorfulness (M) extends this by measuring the absolute strength of the chromatic sensation, scaling with the luminance level of the illumination and similarly rooted in the red-green and yellow-blue channels; M increases as illumination brightens, even if relative purity remains constant.[11] Hue (h), expressed as an angle (typically in degrees), defines the dominant spectral quality of the color (e.g., reddish or bluish), derived directly from the ratio of the red-green (a) to yellow-blue (b) opponent signals via h = \tan^{-1}(b / a). Saturation (s) describes the proportion of colorfulness relative to the perceived lightness or brightness of the stimulus, often formulated in models like Hunt's as s = C / J, where it indicates how much the color deviates from neutral at a given lightness level; this parameter connects the chromatic attributes to the achromatic ones through the opponent channels.[13] In CIECAM02, saturation is instead defined as s = 100 (M / Q), highlighting its dependence on absolute brightness rather than relative lightness.[12] Collectively, these parameters embody the opponent-process theory by separating the visual response into independent black-white (for J and Q), red-green, and yellow-blue (for C, M, h, and s) dimensions, enabling predictions of appearance under varied conditions.[11]Perceptual phenomena
Chromatic adaptation refers to the visual system's ability to adjust sensitivity to the spectral power distribution of the illumination, thereby preserving the relative appearance of colors across illuminants. This phenomenon is foundational to color constancy, where objects maintain their perceived colors despite changes in lighting. The von Kries transform provides a mathematical model for this process, assuming independent adaptation in the long- (L), medium- (M), and short-wavelength (S) cone responses. It scales each cone response by a factor D_c = \frac{c_w}{c_a}, where c_w is the cone response to the reference white point and c_a is the response to the adapting field for cone type c.[14] This diagonal transformation effectively normalizes the color signals relative to the illuminant, with the degree of adaptation D often parameterized as a function of the white point adaptation factor to account for incomplete adaptation in real scenes.[15] A classic example is viewing a neutral scene through a colored gel filter, such as a red filter, which initially tints all colors reddish; however, adaptation quickly compensates, restoring the perception of whites as achromatic and maintaining object color relations.[16] Hue appearance can shift due to chromatic adaptation and luminance variations, independent of simple tristimulus values. The Bezold-Brücke effect illustrates this, where increasing the brightness of a monochromatic light alters its perceived hue: for wavelengths around 508 nm (yellow-green), higher luminances shift the hue toward yellow, while lower luminances shift it toward blue, reflecting nonlinear opponent processing in the visual system.[17] These shifts occur because adaptation affects cone opponency differently at varying intensity levels, making colorimetric predictions inadequate without accounting for such perceptual dynamics. Simultaneous contrast arises when the perceived color of a region is altered by its immediate neighbors, enhancing differences in hue, lightness, or saturation; for instance, a medium gray patch appears darker when adjacent to white than to black, as the visual system exaggerates relative differences for edge detection.[18] In contrast, assimilation causes a color to take on attributes of its surround, such as a grating of thin colored lines appearing to spread into the background, blending rather than contrasting. Crispening further modulates lightness perception, where small luminance differences near the white or black extremes are perceptually amplified, increasing apparent contrast in those regions compared to mid-tones.[19] Colorfulness and brightness perceptions deviate from luminance alone due to saturation interactions. The Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect shows that highly saturated colors appear brighter than achromatic colors of equivalent luminance, with the added brightness increasing nonlinearly with saturation; for example, a vivid red light is seen as brighter than a white light at the same physical intensity, influencing display design and lighting applications.[20] This ties into broader scaling of perceived magnitude, governed by Stevens' power law, where the sensation \psi scales with stimulus intensity I as \psi = k I^n, with exponent n \approx 0.33 for brightness and higher values (around 0.5–1.0) for colorfulness, reflecting compressive nonlinearities in visual encoding.[21] Spatial phenomena underscore the context-dependent nature of color appearance. Color spreading occurs in illusions where a chromatic region induces its hue into adjacent achromatic areas, often via perceived transparency, as seen in displays with moving flanks that enhance the bleed effect. Hunting refers to perceived instabilities or mottling in uniform color fields under certain spatial frequencies, exacerbated by low-contrast surrounds that amplify noise-like variations. The Helmholtz illusion, particularly irradiation, makes bright regions appear expanded relative to darker ones of equal size, due to lateral inhibition at luminance boundaries influenced by the surround luminance. These effects vary with surround conditions: in dim surrounds (e.g., viewing a display in darkness), colors appear desaturated and less bright compared to average surrounds (moderate room lighting), where higher variance enhances perceived vividness.[22][23][24] A viewing conditions framework contextualizes these phenomena by specifying key parameters relative to a reference white: adapting luminance L_A (horizontal illuminance on the plane perpendicular to gaze), background relative luminance Y_b / Y_w (luminance of the immediate surround divided by white), and surround category (dark for very low La, e.g., <2 cd/m²; dim for low La, e.g., 2–20 cd/m²; average for higher La, e.g., ≥20 cd/m²). These factors modulate adaptation degree, contrast sensitivity, and overall appearance scaling, ensuring models predict how phenomena like contrast or spreading intensify under dim viewing versus lit environments.[16]Historical development
Early models
The early color appearance models, developed primarily in the 1970s through the 1990s, laid the groundwork for predicting perceptual attributes like lightness, chroma, and hue under varying viewing conditions, often tailored to practical applications such as textile color matching and image reproduction before the advent of standardized CIE frameworks.[9] These models emphasized opponent-color processing and basic chromatic adaptation mechanisms, addressing limitations in earlier colorimetric spaces like CIE XYZ by incorporating nonlinear transformations and illuminant dependencies.[25] The Nayatani et al. model, introduced in the mid-1980s, adapted the CIELUV uniform color space to predict color appearance through opponent-color dimensions, including achromatic and chromatic responses derived from nonlinear cone excitations using Estévez-Hunt-Pointer primaries. It incorporated effects of correlated color temperature (CCT) on appearance by adjusting the adaptation transform based on illuminant chromaticity, with equations for lightness L^* = 116 \left( \frac{Y}{Y_n} \right)^{1/3} - 16 modified by a scaling factor dependent on CCT deviation from the reference white, and chroma predictions via s_u = 13 L^* (u' - u_n') and s_v = 13 L^* (v' - v_n'), where u', v' are CIELUV coordinates under the test illuminant.[26] This approach enabled predictions of hue shifts and saturation changes for illuminants spanning 3000–10000 K, performing well for surface colors in controlled viewing setups.[9] The Hunt model, refined through the 1970s and 1980s, utilized an opponent-color space to compute perceptual correlates, transforming CIE XYZ tristimulus values via a linear matrix to long (L), medium (M), and short (S) cone responses, followed by nonlinear post-adaptation stages.[9] Its chromatic adaptation transform employed a von Kries-type scaling of cone responses adjusted for degree of adaptation D, with equations such as adapted L' = L * (F_L / L_a), where F_L is a luminance-dependent factor and L_a the adapting luminance, leading to correlates of lightness J = 100 \left( \frac{A}{A_w} \right)^{c z}, chroma C = \sqrt{(a')^2 + (b')^2}, and hue h = \tan^{-1}(b'/a'), where a', b' are opponent signals and parameters like c, a, z account for surround and Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effects.[27] Developed initially for photographic reproduction, it excelled in predicting appearance under dim surrounds and varying illuminants like tungsten and daylight.[28] Building on the Hunt framework, the RLAB model (1996) by Fairchild extended CIELAB for cross-media applications by incorporating a modified von Kries chromatic adaptation and variable power-function nonlinearities in the luminance channel.[29] The luminance nonlinearity used cube-root compression akin to CIELAB, expressed as L = 100 (Y / Y_r)^{1/3} for reference white Y_r, but with adjustable exponents (e.g., 1/3 for average viewing) to model compressive perceptual scaling, while chroma and hue followed opponent transformations a_R = 430 [(X_{ref})^{\sigma} - (Y_{ref})^{\sigma}] adapted for background relative luminance. This refinement improved predictions for pictorial images, reducing errors in chroma constancy across media by up to 20% compared to basic CIELAB.[29] The LLAB model (1996), an extension focused on lighting applications, modified CIELAB with the BFD chromatic adaptation transform to handle illuminant changes, particularly for surface colors under non-daylight sources.[30] It predicted lightness via L_L = 116 f(Y) z - 16, where f(Y) = (Y / Y_r)^{1/F_S} with surround factor F_S (3.0–4.2) and induction term z = 1 + F_L (Y_b / 100)^{1/2} incorporating background luminance Y_b and lightness induction F_L (0 or 1), enabling accurate shifts in perceived lightness under illuminants like A or F sources. Chroma followed C_L = \sqrt{A_L^2 + B_L^2} \times F_C, with F_C (0.95–1.15) for colorfulness induction, making it suitable for evaluating light source color rendering in textiles and displays.[30] These models were primarily developed for industry-specific needs like textile matching and color reproduction, predating CIE standardization efforts and influencing later unified approaches.[9]CIECAM evolution
The evolution of the CIE's standardized color appearance models began with the establishment of Technical Committee TC1-52 in 1994, tasked with recommending a chromatic adaptation transform essential for appearance modeling; although consensus on a single transform eluded the committee due to comparable performance among proposals, its deliberations highlighted needs for revisions that influenced subsequent developments.[31] CIECAM97s, recommended by the CIE in 1997 as an interim simple version for practical applications, transforms input CIE XYZ tristimulus values to post-adaptation cone responses via the Bradford matrix to LMS space, followed by a modified von Kries adaptation incorporating exponential nonlinearity on the short-wavelength channel to account for incomplete adaptation.[32] It outputs perceptual correlates including lightness J = 100 \frac{A}{A_w} c z, brightness Q = \frac{1.24}{c} \left( \frac{J}{100} \right)^{0.67} (A_w + 3)^{0.9}, chroma C = 2.44 s^{0.69} \left( \frac{J}{100} \right)^{0.67} n^{1.64 - 0.29 n}, colorfulness M = C F_L^{0.15}, and hue angle h = \tan^{-1} \frac{b}{a}, where A is the achromatic signal, s is saturation, and other terms adjust for viewing conditions.[32] This model, formalized in CIE Publication 131 in 1998, marked the CIE's first endorsed appearance model, building on experimental data to predict appearance under diverse illuminants and surrounds.[33] CIECAM02, published in 2002 by CIE Technical Committee 8-01, refined CIECAM97s with enhancements for sharper hue linearity through an eccentricity factor e (ranging 0.8–1.2) in opponent color signal adjustments, alongside improved surround compensation via the F_L factor calculated as F_L = 0.2 k^4 (5 L_A) + 0.1 (1 - k^4)^{2/5} (5 L_A)^{1/3} where k = 1/(5 L_A + 1) and L_A is adapting luminance.[12] It introduced nonlinear compression in post-adaptation responses using a Michaelis-Menten form, e.g., R'_a = \frac{400 (F_L R'/100)}{(R'/100) F_L + 27.13} + 0.1, addressing hyperbolic inconsistencies in CIECAM97s for highly saturated colors.[12] These revisions, detailed in CIE Publication 159, enhanced performance in color management while simplifying the structure for imaging applications.[12] In the 2000s, the IPT color space emerged as a precursor influencing later CIE models, derived from D65-adapted XYZ via Hunt-Pointer-Estevez LMS transformation followed by a matrix rotation to achieve perceptual uniformity, with I representing lightness, P the red-green opponent dimension, and T the blue-yellow opponent dimension after cube-root compression for HDR compatibility.[34] Developed through psychophysical testing for constant perceived hue loci, IPT provided a foundation for uniform scaling in wide-gamut and high-dynamic-range scenarios, later integrated into extensions like CIECAM02-based difference formulas.[34] CIECAM16, initially formulated in 2016 and standardized in CIE Publication 248 in 2022, incorporated a modified degree of adaptation D in its CAT16 transform to better handle luminance-dependent chromatic adaptation, with revised formulations for correlated color temperature and luminance ratios under varying illuminants (e.g., for L \geq 100 lux, \text{CCT}_v = -0.00011528 \times \text{CCT}_s^2 + 2.1653 \times \text{CCT}_s - 1978.3).[35] It achieved improved perceptual uniformity in chroma and hue scales through eccentricity corrections while maintaining equivalent prediction accuracy to CIECAM02, with minor 2022 updates enhancing HDR compatibility for self-luminous displays across 3000K–8000K CCTs and 10–1000 lux levels.[35] Designed for color management in imaging industries, CIECAM16 addresses domain and range issues via linear programming, enabling reliable cross-media reproduction of related colors.[36]Specific models
CIELAB

The lightness component is calculated as: L^* = 116 f\left(\frac{Y}{Y_n}\right) - 16 where Y_n is the Y tristimulus value of the reference white, and the function f(t) = t^{1/3} for t > (6/29)^3; for smaller values, a linear approximation is used to ensure continuity.[39] Chroma C^* and hue angle h are then derived from the a* and b* coordinates as: C^* = \sqrt{{a^*}^2 + {b^*}^2}, \quad h = \atantwo(b^*, a^*) These provide polar representations in the a*-b* plane, with h expressed in degrees from 0° (positive a*, +red) to 360°.[39] Despite its foundational role, CIELAB has significant limitations as a color appearance model because it assumes fixed viewing conditions and does not explicitly account for chromatic adaptation, surround effects, or other contextual influences on perceived color. It treats all illumination and surround scenarios uniformly after a simple von Kries-type adaptation to the reference white, leading to inaccuracies in predicting appearance under varying illuminants or backgrounds.[40] CIELAB remains widely adopted in industry for color specification and quality control, such as in printing, textiles, and plastics, due to its device-independent nature and computational simplicity, even with acknowledged perceptual nonuniformities.[41] A key feature is its color difference metric, ΔE* = √[(ΔL*)² + (Δa*)² + (Δb*)²], which quantifies perceptual differences between colors, with values below 1 often considered imperceptible under reference conditions.[37]Hunt model

RLAB, introduced in 1996 by Mark D. Fairchild and Robert S. Berns, is a color appearance model designed for cross-media color reproduction applications, emphasizing perceptual uniformity in relative color appearance predictions across varying viewing conditions such as white points, luminance levels, and surrounds. It incorporates parameters inspired by the Hunt model but refines them to optimize uniformity in color difference calculations, particularly for Delta E metrics in imaging contexts.[43] The model computes relative lightness R_L using the equation R_L = 100 \left( \frac{Y}{Y_n} \right)^\sigma, where Y is the tristimulus Y value, Y_n is the reference white's Y, and \sigma is a surround-dependent exponent (typically 0.46 for average viewing conditions).[43] Chroma R_C is derived as R_C = \sqrt{a_R^2 + b_R^2}, with opponent color coordinates a_R and b_R based on ratios of adapted cone fundamentals (LMS) after a modified von Kries chromatic adaptation transform.[43] In contrast, the LLAB model, developed by M. Ronnier Luo and colleagues in 1996, focuses on quantifying color appearance and differences under varying lighting conditions, particularly addressing illuminant metamerism and changes in light sources.[44] Tailored for industries like textiles where color matching across illuminants is critical, LLAB combines the BFD (Bradford-Fairchild-Ducho) chromatic adaptation transform with a modified CIELAB space to predict lightness, chroma, and hue shifts. Its lightness correlate l^* accounts for illuminant variations via the equation l^* = 100 + 150 \left[ \left( \frac{Y}{Y_n} \right)^{1/3} - \left( \frac{Y_0}{Y_{n0}} \right)^{1/3} \right], where Y_0 and Y_{n0} represent values under a reference illuminant. While RLAB is suited for general scene reproduction and image applications requiring consistent relative appearance, LLAB excels in scenarios involving illuminant-induced metamerism, such as textile evaluation under multiple light sources, providing precise metrics for color matching and difference assessment.[44][43]CIECAM97s
CIECAM97s, the CIE 1997 Interim Color Appearance Model (Simple Version), represents the first standardized color appearance model developed by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) Technical Committee TC1-34 to predict color appearance attributes under diverse viewing conditions, including changes in illuminant, background, and surround.
