Corrie Ndaba
Corrie Richard Ndaba (born 25 December 1999) is an Irish professional footballer who plays as a left-back or centre-back for Italian Serie A club U.S. Lecce. Born in Dublin to South African parents, he holds Irish citizenship and has represented the Republic of Ireland at under-18 level (1 cap), with call-ups to the under-21 team.[1] Standing at 1.88 metres tall and left-footed, Ndaba is known for his defensive solidity and versatility across the backline.[2] Ndaba began his career in the youth academy of Ipswich Town, joining the club at age 16 and signing his first professional contract in 2018.[3] He made his senior debut on loan at Scottish Championship side Ayr United in the 2020–21 season, appearing in 13 matches.[4] The following year, during a loan spell at English League Two club Salford City, he featured in 29 league games, scoring two goals and earning the Supporters' Player of the Year award for his consistent performances.[5] Subsequent loans to League One teams Burton Albion (seven appearances in 2022) and Fleetwood Town (six appearances later that year) followed, providing further experience in the English Football League.[4] In June 2023, Ndaba joined Scottish Premiership club Kilmarnock on an initial loan from Ipswich, which became permanent later that year.[6] He made 64 league appearances for Kilmarnock over two seasons, contributing two goals and one assist while establishing himself as a key defender in the top flight.[4] On 28 July 2025, Ndaba transferred to U.S. Lecce for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year contract with an option for two additional years, marking his move to Italy's elite division.[7] As of November 2025, he has made three substitute appearances in Serie A for Lecce.[8]Early life and youth career
Early life
Ndaba was born in Dublin, Ireland, to South African parents.[9][10]Youth career
Ndaba's involvement in organized youth football began with Palmerstown FC in Dublin, where he first showcased his talents in local setups.[11][12] He subsequently progressed to Cherry Orchard FC, a prominent youth club in the area, spending several years developing his game there.[11][13] In 2016, at the age of 16, Ndaba earned a move to the Ipswich Town Academy in England, marking his entry into professional youth development structures.[11][14]Club career
Ipswich Town and early loans (2016–2021)
Ndaba joined the Ipswich Town academy in 2016 at the age of 16, transitioning from his youth setup in Ireland to focus on developing as a defender in the club's youth system.[11] During his time in the academy, he progressed through the ranks, signing a two-year scholarship contract upon arrival and later extending his full academy scholarship in July 2018 until June 2019.[15] He then secured a three-and-a-half-year professional contract with the club, which underscored his growth in training and matches at the under-18 and under-23 levels, where he honed his skills as a centre-back.[15] Despite this advancement, Ndaba received limited opportunities with Ipswich's first team during this period, prompting the club to prioritize loan moves to build his match experience in lower leagues.[16] In November 2019, Ndaba was sent on his first loan to Hemel Hempstead Town in the National League South for one month, where he made a single appearance to gain exposure in senior non-league football.[17] Shortly after returning, he joined Chelmsford City on a similar one-month loan in December 2019, though he did not feature in any matches during his stint with the National League South side.[18] These early loans provided initial senior minutes but highlighted the challenges of breaking into competitive lineups at that level, serving primarily as developmental steps rather than significant playing time. Ndaba's most substantial loan of this phase came in January 2021, when he moved to Scottish Championship club Ayr United until the end of the 2020–21 season.[19] There, he made 13 appearances, marking his first consistent run of senior games and allowing him to adapt to the physical demands of professional football outside the academy environment.[11] This spell in Scotland represented a key step in his maturation as a defender, emphasizing tactical awareness and resilience, though it still reflected Ipswich's strategy of using loans to compensate for the absence of first-team breakthroughs at Portman Road during these formative years.[14]Salford City (loan)
In August 2021, Corrie Ndaba joined Salford City on a season-long loan from Ipswich Town, marking his first extended spell in English football's fourth tier.[20] The 21-year-old Republic of Ireland international quickly established himself as a key figure in the team, making 31 appearances across all competitions during the 2021–22 campaign.[21] Primarily deployed as a centre-back, Ndaba demonstrated versatility by also featuring at left-back and occasionally in central midfield, contributing to Salford's defensive solidity in League Two.[3] He started 28 of those matches, helping anchor a backline that faced intense competition, and scored twice in league play—his first senior goal coming on 2 April 2022, a low drive into the bottom corner that opened the scoring in a 2–0 away victory over Hartlepool United.[22] His second strike arrived later that month, a header in a 4–2 defeat to Stevenage on 7 May 2022, which briefly reduced the arrears to one goal and showcased his aerial presence.[23] These moments highlighted his growing attacking threat from defense, while his consistent performances earned widespread praise for reliability and composure under pressure. Ndaba's impactful season culminated in him being named Salford City Supporters’ Player of the Year in May 2022, a testament to his popularity and contributions.[5] The loan proved pivotal for his personal development, providing regular senior minutes that built his confidence and experience; as he later reflected, the supporters' affection and the manager's trust were unlike anything he had encountered before, fostering a sense of belonging that accelerated his maturation as a professional.[3] This spell contrasted sharply with his prior, more limited loan experiences, representing a breakout period that solidified his reputation as a promising defender.Burton Albion and Fleetwood Town (loans)
On 19 August 2022, Ndaba joined Burton Albion on a season-long loan from Ipswich Town to gain experience in League One.[24] The 22-year-old defender, who had impressed in League Two the previous season, was expected to bolster the backline as a left-footed centre-back capable of also playing left-back.[25] During his spell, Ndaba made seven appearances in League One, accumulating 571 minutes, and provided one assist in a 1-1 draw against Derby County on 10 December 2022.[26] His contributions included solid defensive work in matches against stronger sides, such as helping secure a victory over Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Cup, though he picked up two yellow cards in league play. Ndaba's time at Burton was marked by challenges, including injuries that restricted his consistent involvement despite the higher intensity of League One compared to his prior loan at Salford City.[27] He later reflected on the loan as valuable for development but noted the physical demands and setbacks limited his opportunities to establish a regular starting role.[27] Overall, the move served as a transitional step, exposing him to competitive EFL football while highlighting areas for adaptation in pace and tactical discipline. On 31 January 2023, Ndaba was recalled by Ipswich Town and immediately loaned to Fleetwood Town for the remainder of the 2022/23 season, reuniting with former Ipswich teammate Toto Nsiala.[28] At Fleetwood, he featured in eight League One matches, totaling 566 minutes, primarily as a left-back where his versatility allowed him to support attacks and maintain defensive solidity.[26] Notable performances included full 90-minute outings against teams like Oxford United, contributing to clean sheets and demonstrating improved adaptation to the league's demands through better positioning and overlapping runs. However, limited starts toward the end of the season underscored ongoing competition for places, though the loan provided crucial minutes to build on his Burton experience.[27]Kilmarnock
Ndaba joined Scottish Premiership club Kilmarnock on a season-long loan from Ipswich Town on 22 June 2023.[6] During the 2023–24 season, he made 28 appearances and scored 1 goal across all competitions, establishing himself as a regular in the defense. His contributions helped Kilmarnock secure a fourth-place finish in the Premiership, qualifying the team for the UEFA Conference League qualifiers.[29] Ndaba's performances highlighted his defensive solidity, with consistent tackling and aerial duels earning praise for his athleticism and composure under pressure.[30] He adapted effectively to the physical demands of Scottish football, noting that the league's intensity suited his playing style after initial adjustment.[31] Building on experience from prior EFL loans, Ndaba quickly became a key part of the backline, providing stability during a competitive campaign that avoided relegation concerns for the established top-flight side. Impressed by his form, Kilmarnock secured Ndaba on a permanent three-year deal from Ipswich Town for an undisclosed fee on 30 July 2024.[32] In the 2024–25 season, he featured in 36 appearances and scored 1 goal, continuing his role as a reliable defender. Ndaba's leadership on the pitch contributed to a ninth-place finish, maintaining the club's Premiership status amid a mid-table battle.Lecce
On 28 July 2025, Corrie Ndaba transferred from Kilmarnock to US Lecce in Serie A for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year contract.[7] This move marked his entry into top-tier Italian football, where he has been deployed primarily as a left-back.[1] As of November 2025, Ndaba has made three substitute appearances in the 2025/26 Serie A season, accumulating 70 minutes on the pitch.[4] During these outings, he contributed to one clean sheet while the team conceded two goals with him on the field.[33] His Serie A debut came on 19 September 2025 against Cagliari, where he played 45 minutes and completed 20 of 21 passes, earning praise for an assured performance.[34] Additionally, Ndaba made his first start for Lecce in the Coppa Italia, playing 90 minutes as a centre-back in a 0–3 loss to AC Milan on 23 September 2025.[35] Ndaba's adaptation to Italian football has involved adjusting to the league's tactical demands and physical intensity as a defensive option in Lecce's backline.[7] Currently, he serves as a rotational left-back, providing depth amid competition for starting spots.[36] His market value stands at €900,000 as of October 2025, reflecting his potential in Serie A.[1] Looking ahead, increased opportunities could solidify his role and enhance his international prospects with Ireland.[37]International career and playing style
International career
Corrie Ndaba, born in Dublin, Ireland, is of South African descent and holds Irish citizenship. He is eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland through his birthplace or South Africa through his parental heritage, having not earned senior caps for any nation. His youth international career began with a single appearance for the Republic of Ireland U18 team in 2016, during a period when he was progressing through the youth ranks at Ipswich Town.[24] In March 2019, Ndaba received his first call-up to the Republic of Ireland U21 squad under manager Stephen Kenny for UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifiers, including the match against Luxembourg, though he did not make an appearance at that level.[38][37] This U21 involvement came amid Ndaba's development on loan from Ipswich Town to EFL clubs, providing him exposure to senior football while aligning with Ireland's youth team pathway for emerging defenders.[11]Playing style
Corrie Ndaba is a left-footed defender who predominantly features as a left-back, though he is versatile enough to deploy as a centre-back or even in defensive midfield roles.[1][39] His preference for left-footed play allows him to excel on the left flank, where he can deliver precise passes and crosses from inverted positions, while his adaptability enables him to shift centrally when required in a back-three formation.[39] This positional flexibility makes him well-suited to modern defensive systems that demand full-backs to contribute to build-up play and cover wide areas dynamically.[40] Ndaba's key strengths lie in his quickness, physical power, and strong positional awareness, which collectively form the foundation of his defensive reliability.[41] He demonstrates notable pace to recover in transitions and power in physical duels, particularly excelling in aerial challenges due to his 188 cm frame.[39] His good reading of the game aids in timely ball interceptions, while high concentration levels ensure consistent focus throughout matches, allowing him to anticipate threats effectively without resorting to rash challenges.[39][41] In terms of versatility, Ndaba's ability to step forward into midfield roles aligns with the demands of contemporary full-backs who must support attacks and maintain fluid defensive shapes.[42] He has been utilised in hybrid positions, dropping back to left-back or advancing to provide width and drive play from deeper areas, enhancing his value in possession-based teams.[40] This multi-faceted profile positions him in the mold of robust Irish defenders known for their physicality and tactical intelligence, contributing solidly to both club and youth international setups.[43]Career statistics and honours
