Dimitrios Siovas
Dimitrios Siovas (born 16 September 1988) is a Greek professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Olympiacos B in the Super League 2.[1] Siovas began his professional career with Panionios in 2007, making over 100 appearances before transferring to Olympiacos in 2012.[2] During his five-year stint with Olympiacos, he contributed to four Super League Greece titles (2012–2013, 2013–2014, 2014–2015, 2015–2016) and two Greek Cup victories (2012–2013, 2014–2015).[1] [3] In January 2017, he joined CD Leganés on loan from Olympiacos, signing permanently ahead of the 2017–18 season and remaining until 2020. He then transferred to SD Huesca for the 2020–21 La Liga season, accumulating 119 appearances in Spain's top flight.[2] [4] After leaving Spain in 2021, Siovas joined Fortuna Sittard for the 2021–22 to 2023–24 Eredivisie seasons, before signing with Lamia on 25 September 2024 for the 2024–25 Super League Greece season.[1] In August 2025, he signed with Olympiacos B, marking a return to the club where he first achieved major success.[1] On the international stage, Siovas debuted for the Greece national team on 15 August 2012 and has earned 20 caps, scoring one goal.[5] He also represented Greece at youth levels, including as part of the under-19 squad that reached the final of the 2007 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.[6]Early life and youth career
Early life
Dimitrios Siovas was born on 16 September 1988 in Drama, a city in northern Greece.[1] Raised in Drama, Siovas grew up in a region with a strong local football culture, which sparked his early interest in the sport through participation in community teams and academies, starting with the Doxa Drama academy.[7] At around age 13, he left local setups in Drama to pursue further development, moving to the youth team of Monastiraki.[7]Youth career
Siovas continued his youth development with Asteras Kallifytou for two years before joining the youth academy of Skoda Xanthi in the 2006–07 season, where he honed his skills as a promising defender.[7] In the mid-2000s, Siovas progressed through the club's youth ranks. By 2006, he earned promotion to Skoda Xanthi's senior squad, marking a significant step in his early development, though he did not record competitive senior appearances at the club.[7] In 2008, Siovas transferred to Panionios, joining their setup as a centre-back and continuing his maturation in a professional environment leading up to his senior debut.[7]Club career
Early career and Panionios
Dimitrios Siovas joined Panionios in 2008, marking the start of his professional career following time in the club's youth system. He primarily developed as a centre-back during this period, adapting to the demands of senior defensive play in the Greek Super League.[1] Siovas made his senior debut for Panionios in the 2008–09 Super League season, appearing in one league match that year. To gain further experience, he was loaned to Ionikos in the Greek Football League for the second half of the 2008–09 campaign, where he featured in 10 matches without scoring.[8][9] Upon returning to Panionios in summer 2009, Siovas gradually became a mainstay in the defense. In the 2009–10 season, he recorded 15 league appearances as he continued to build his role within the squad. His breakthrough came in the 2010–11 season, when he established himself as a regular starter, contributing 29 league matches and scoring 2 goals, helping Panionios maintain a solid mid-table position.[9] Siovas remained a key defensive figure in the 2011–12 season, logging 27 league appearances and providing 2 assists. Over his full tenure with Panionios from 2008 to 2012, he amassed 78 appearances and 3 goals across all competitions, showcasing consistent performances at a competitive level in Greek football.[10]Olympiacos
Dimitrios Siovas transferred to Olympiacos from Panionios in June 2012, signing a four-year contract with the club.[11] During his tenure at Olympiacos from 2012 to 2017, Siovas made 108 appearances across all competitions and scored 3 goals.[6] He played a key role in the team's defensive line, contributing to four consecutive Super League Greece titles between the 2012–13 and 2015–16 seasons.[1] Siovas made his European debut for Olympiacos in the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round against Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he featured in both legs of the tie that the Greek side won 4–2 on aggregate to advance. His defensive performances in these qualifiers were notable for their solidity, helping Olympiacos progress to the group stage for the first time since 2007.Leganés
Dimitrios Siovas joined CD Leganés on loan from Olympiacos in January 2017 during the 2016–17 La Liga season.[12] He quickly integrated into the squad, making 17 appearances and providing defensive stability that contributed to the club's historic first-time survival in La Liga, as they finished 17th and avoided relegation.[10] His physical presence and aerial ability proved valuable in a team adapting to top-flight football after their promotion from the Segunda División earlier that year. In July 2017, Siovas's move was made permanent for a transfer fee of €3 million, securing his role as a cornerstone of Leganés' backline. The following 2017–18 season saw him feature in 36 matches across all competitions, scoring 2 goals, including a pivotal strike in the Copa del Rey semifinals against Sevilla that helped Leganés reach the final for the first time in club history.[12] His consistent performances were instrumental in another relegation battle, with Leganés again finishing 17th to maintain their La Liga status. From 2017 to 2020, Siovas amassed 108 appearances and 4 goals for Leganés, embodying the defensive resilience that defined the club's early top-flight years.[6] Notable moments included his commanding aerial duels in high-stakes fixtures, such as the 1–1 draw against Real Madrid in April 2019, where he won 6 of 7 physical challenges.[13]Huesca
Dimitrios Siovas transferred to SD Huesca from CD Leganés on 17 September 2020 for a reported fee of €1 million, signing a two-year contract.[14] The move allowed him to continue his adaptation to Spanish football, building on his experience at Leganés where he had become a key defensive figure. In the 2020–21 La Liga season, Siovas established himself as a regular starter in Huesca's defense, making 36 league appearances and scoring 2 goals, both headers that highlighted his aerial prowess.[9] His contributions were vital during Huesca's campaign to avoid relegation, partnering effectively with central defender Jorge Pulido to provide stability amid a challenging debut top-flight season for the club following their promotion the previous year.[15] Despite these efforts, Huesca struggled throughout the season, finishing 19th in the table and suffering relegation to the Segunda División on the final day after a 1–1 draw with Valencia. Siovas featured in nearly all matches, logging over 3,000 minutes, but the team could not secure enough points to stay up.[16] Following the relegation, Siovas mutually terminated his contract with Huesca on 31 August 2021, just before the start of the 2021–22 Segunda División season, where he had made limited appearances in preseason preparations.[17] His tenure at the club thus spanned less than a year, marked by leadership in defense during a high-stakes survival battle but ending amid the disappointment of descent to the second tier.Fortuna Sittard
In January 2022, Dimitrios Siovas joined Fortuna Sittard on a free transfer from SD Huesca after terminating his contract with the Spanish club the previous summer, signing an initial deal until the end of the 2021–22 season to bolster the team's defensive options amid a relegation battle in the Eredivisie.[18] He made his debut for the club on 5 February 2022 in a 2–0 home win over SC Heerenveen, starting as a centre-back and contributing to a clean sheet in his first appearance. Just one week later, on 12 February 2022, Siovas scored his first goal for Fortuna Sittard, heading in the winner in a crucial 1–0 away victory against FC Groningen that helped secure the team's Eredivisie survival.[19] During his time at Fortuna Sittard from 2022 to 2024, Siovas established himself as a reliable starter in defence, making 63 appearances across all competitions and scoring 2 goals, with his second coming on 26 February 2023 in a 2–4 home defeat to Feyenoord.[10] His contributions were particularly vital in the 2021–22 season finale, where he featured in six matches, helping the team finish 16th and avoid relegation through the playoffs.[20] Siovas adapted to the faster pace of the Eredivisie after arriving from La Liga, where his physical presence and aerial ability—honed in Spanish football—proved effective, though club coach Sjors Ultee noted post-season that the defender operated at only about 60% capacity initially due to the transition and injury recovery, with expectations for greater impact in the following campaigns.[21] In the 2022–23 and 2023–24 seasons, he formed a solid partnership in central defence, contributing to mid-table finishes of 13th and 14th respectively, while earning a reputation as a "mythical" figure among fans for his no-nonsense style and leadership during turbulent periods.[22] Recognizing his importance, Fortuna Sittard extended Siovas's contract on 24 June 2022 until 30 June 2024, allowing him to continue as a key rotational player and mentor younger defenders in the squad.[23]Lamia
In September 2024, Dimitrios Siovas signed a one-year contract with PAS Lamia on a free transfer, marking his return to Greek football after seven years abroad.[6] This move brought the 36-year-old centre-back back to the Super League, where he aimed to leverage his extensive experience from La Liga and the Eredivisie to bolster Lamia's defence.[1] During the 2024–2025 season, Siovas featured in 10 matches for Lamia, starting all of them and accumulating 784 minutes on the pitch, though he did not score any goals.[9] As a veteran defender, he played a key role in the team's backline amid their struggle in the relegation group, contributing to two clean sheets while helping to organize the defence in critical fixtures.[3] His presence provided leadership and stability to a squad facing intense pressure to maintain their top-flight status. Siovas departed Lamia in the summer of 2025 upon the expiry of his contract, influenced by his limited overall playing time relative to the full campaign and the club's relegation to Super League 2.[1]Olympiacos B
Dimitrios Siovas signed with Olympiacos B on August 10, 2025, joining the reserves team as a free agent on a one-year contract expiring June 30, 2026.[1] This move marked his return to the club where he had previously established himself as a key defender during his first spell from 2012 to 2017. In the early stages of the 2025/26 Super League 2 season, Siovas featured in two matches, starting and playing the full 90 minutes in each against Panionios Athens (1-1 draw on September 14) and Ellas Syrou (1-0 win on September 21), without recording any goals or assists.[10] His contributions provided defensive stability to the young squad during these outings. Siovas's tenure was soon interrupted by a muscle injury sustained in late 2025, sidelining him from matchday 3 onward with an unknown return date as of November 2025.[1] Despite the setback, his signing was driven by a commitment to his boyhood club, Olympiacos, where he aimed to serve in a mentorship role, leveraging his vast professional experience to guide emerging talents both on and off the pitch.[1]International career
Youth international career
Siovas made his debut for the Greece under-19 national team in 2007, featuring in the qualifying rounds for the UEFA European Under-19 Championship.[24] He was included in the squad for the final tournament in Austria, where Greece advanced to the final after defeating Germany 3–2 in the semi-finals.[25] During the competition, Siovas substituted in the 48th minute of the semi-final against Germany, and came on as a substitute in the second half of the final against Spain, attempting shots that went wide and over the bar in Greece's 1–0 defeat.[26][27] In total, he earned five caps for the U19 side without scoring a goal, contributing as a centre-back in defensive setups during these high-stakes matches.[6] Siovas received his first call-up to the Greece under-21 team in 2009, joining the squad during the UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying campaign.[28] He made ten appearances for the U21s, scoring once, with the majority of his outings in qualifiers where he started all ten matches and logged 900 minutes.[6][29] These experiences in youth international tournaments honed his defensive positioning and aerial ability against varied opponents.[29]Senior international career
Dimitrios Siovas made his debut for the Greece senior national team on 15 August 2012, coming on as a substitute for 10 minutes in a 3-2 friendly victory over Norway in Oslo.[30] This appearance marked the beginning of his international career as a reliable centre-back, often called upon for his physical presence and aerial ability in defensive setups. Shortly thereafter, he earned his first competitive cap on 16 October 2012, playing 76 minutes in a goalless draw against Slovakia during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.[30] Siovas became a regular fixture in Greece's qualifying campaigns, contributing to the team's successful qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup through UEFA Group G. He featured in four matches during this phase, including full 90-minute outings against Liechtenstein (twice) and Latvia, where his solid defending helped secure vital points in a competitive group that also included Bosnia and Herzegovina.[30] Transitioning to the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers, he played key roles in the playoff round against Romania, appearing in both legs of the 4-3 aggregate victory that advanced Greece to the finals—though he did not feature in the tournament itself.[30] His performances during these periods underscored his value as a depth option amid injuries to established defenders. In later years, Siovas maintained his involvement in major competitions, including the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2018–19 and the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers. He started in the Nations League opener against Finland on 15 November 2018, playing 62 minutes in a 1-0 win, and was a consistent presence in Group J of the Euro qualifiers, logging full matches against Liechtenstein, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy (twice), and Armenia in 2019.[30] His only international goal arrived on 6 September 2020, heading in the winner in a 2-1 UEFA Nations League triumph over Kosovo after 50 minutes, providing a rare attacking contribution from the backline.[30] Following the match, Siovas was excluded from subsequent national team fixtures by manager John van 't Schip for breaching COVID-19 protocols. He concluded his senior international career with 20 caps and 1 goal, his final appearance being that goal-scoring outing against Kosovo.[30]Playing style and reception
Playing attributes
Dimitrios Siovas primarily operates as a centre-back, leveraging his left-footedness to anchor defensive lines, though he has demonstrated versatility by occasionally deploying in defensive midfield roles during his career.[9] His imposing stature of 1.91 meters contributes significantly to his aerial dominance, where he excels in winning duels, achieving a very strong rating in this attribute across professional analyses.[1][31] In the 2020 La Liga season with Huesca, Siovas won 83.9% of his aerial battles, ranking among the top performers in the league for this facet.[32] Siovas's defensive prowess extends to tackling efficiency and ball interception, where he maintains a strong profile, often described as a reliable tackler capable of disrupting opposition plays.[31][33] His leadership qualities have been evident, particularly during his time at Olympiacos, where he served as the de facto leader of the backline in the 2015–16 season, guiding younger teammates through high-stakes matches.[34] Physically robust, Siovas exhibits strong positioning and concentration on the pitch, enabling him to read the game effectively and clear threats from deep areas.[31] While his passing has been identified as a relative weakness, his experiences in the Spanish leagues—spanning La Liga and Segunda División with clubs like Leganés and Huesca—honed a practical ball-playing ability, favoring long balls and ground passes to initiate transitions.[31][1] Throughout his career, Siovas evolved from an aggressive, skillful youth defender known for intense challenges in his early days at Panionios and Olympiacos, to a more composed veteran who emphasizes guidance and stability, as seen in his 2025 return to Olympiacos B to mentor emerging talents.[34][35]Career statistics and honours
