Early life
Domingos de Sousa Coutinho Meneses Duarte was born on 10 March 1995 in Cascais, a coastal town in the Lisbon District of Portugal.[7] He grew up in a family of devoted Sporting CP supporters, with his grandfather enrolling him as a club member from birth, fostering an early passion for the sport.[8] The local environment of Cascais, known for its proximity to Lisbon and access to coastal recreational activities, provided Duarte with initial opportunities to engage with football through informal play and community influences before formal training. At age nine, he transitioned to structured youth development at GD Estoril Praia's academy in 2004.[8]Youth career
Domingos Duarte began his organized football training at the age of nine, joining the youth academy of GD Estoril Praia in 2004, where he developed through various age-group teams until 2011.[9][10] In 2011, at the age of 16, Duarte transferred to the prestigious youth academy of Sporting CP, progressing through their U-17 and U-19 squads, where he honed his skills as a centre-back with strong aerial ability and defensive positioning.[10][11] A key milestone came in 2014 when Duarte represented Portugal at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Hungary, starting in matches including the group stage against Austria, the semi-final against Serbia, and the final against Germany, contributing to the team's runner-up finish.[12][13][14] That same year, Duarte made his debut for Sporting CP's reserve team, Sporting CP B, in the LigaPro, accumulating 53 appearances and scoring 3 goals over two seasons from 2014 to 2016, gaining valuable experience in senior-level competition.[15][16]Professional club career
Sporting CP
Duarte signed a professional contract with Sporting CP in 2016, remaining affiliated with the club until 2019 without recording any first-team appearances during that period.[4] To build senior experience, he was loaned to C.F. Os Belenenses for the 2016–17 season, where the young centre-back made 28 appearances and scored 1 goal in the Primeira Liga.[3] The following year, Duarte joined G.D. Chaves on loan for the 2017–18 campaign, featuring in 30 Primeira Liga matches and emphasizing defensive solidity in a competitive environment.[3] In 2018–19, he moved to Deportivo de La Coruña on loan in Spain's Segunda División, delivering 39 appearances and 4 goals while providing standout performances during the team's push for promotion.[3] Building on his youth foundation at Sporting CP, these successive loans fostered Duarte's tactical growth as a right-footed centre-back, refining his positioning, aerial ability, and overall defensive contributions across different leagues.[7][3]Granada CF
Domingos Duarte completed a permanent transfer to Granada CF from Sporting CP on 14 July 2019, signing a four-year contract.[17][4] His previous loan spell at Deportivo La Coruña had honed his versatility as a centre-back capable of playing on either side of the defense. The transfer fee was €3.49 million.[4] Duarte made his La Liga debut for Granada on 17 August 2019, starting in a high-scoring 4–4 draw at home against Villarreal CF.[18] Over the next three seasons, he established himself as a reliable starter, accumulating 102 appearances and scoring 5 goals across all competitions.[15] In his debut 2019–20 campaign, Duarte featured in 36 matches, contributing 3 goals while forming a solid defensive partnership that helped Granada secure a mid-table finish and survival in La Liga following their promotion the previous season.[19] His aerial prowess and positioning were instrumental, with notable performances including a goal in a 2–0 victory over Getafe CF. The 2020–21 season marked Duarte's most prominent contributions, particularly in European competition, where he started 10 of Granada's 11 UEFA Europa League matches as the club achieved a historic run to the quarter-finals. Granada's defensive resilience, anchored by Duarte's interventions—such as key blocks in knockout ties against Napoli and Manchester United—enabled surprising victories, including a 2–0 second-leg win over the latter. Domestically, he appeared in 29 fixtures, adding 1 goal and helping maintain Granada's top-flight status with a 9th-place finish.[20] In 2021–22, injuries limited Duarte to 21 appearances and 1 goal, though he remained a rotational option in Granada's 11th-place La Liga finish.[21] His tenure concluded in July 2022 when he departed the club after making over 100 total appearances.[15]Getafe CF
On 11 July 2022, Domingos Duarte transferred to Getafe CF for a fee of €750,000, signing a four-year contract that keeps him in the Spanish top flight.[22] This move allowed him to continue competing at the highest level in Spain, leveraging his prior experience from Granada to facilitate a swift adaptation to the team.[23] Since joining Getafe, Duarte has established himself as a key centre-back, making 97 appearances and scoring 2 goals across all competitions as of November 19, 2025.[15] In the 2025–26 La Liga season, he has been a consistent starter, featuring in 11 matches for 855 minutes played.[24] His defensive contributions stand at 89%, with aerial duel win rates around 27%, underscoring his reliability in the backline.[16] Duarte's market value has fluctuated, reaching €800,000 in 2025 amid his steady role at the club.[1] His contract with Getafe is set to expire on 30 June 2026.[22]International career
Youth international career
Domingos Duarte began his youth international career with Portugal's under-19 team, making 15 appearances and scoring 1 goal between 2013 and 2014.[25] His debut came in qualifiers and friendlies, where he established himself as a reliable centre-back, often partnering with defenders like Edgar Ié to provide solidity at the back. This period culminated in the 2014 UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Hungary, where Duarte featured prominently in all five matches as Portugal reached the final but lost 1-0 to Germany, finishing as runners-up and gaining valuable exposure in high-stakes tournament play.[14] Transitioning to the under-20 level, Duarte earned 10 caps from 2014 to 2015, with no goals scored.[26] He was a key part of the squad at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, starting in the group stage victory over Qatar (4-0) and the round-of-16 win against New Zealand (2-1), before Portugal exited in the quarter-finals against Brazil (0-2).[27] His performances highlighted his aerial strength and defensive organization, contributing to Portugal's defensive record during the tournament.[27] Duarte's youth international journey concluded with a single appearance for the under-21 team in 2017, coming on as a substitute for 11 minutes in a 3-1 friendly win over Norway on 24 March.[28] Across all youth levels, he accumulated 26 caps, underscoring his development through Portugal's youth system and the international experience that prepared him for senior football.[26]Senior international career
Domingos Duarte received his first senior call-up to the Portugal national team in October 2020 for the UEFA Nations League fixtures, though he did not feature in those matches.[29] He made his debut on 11 November 2020, starting and playing the full 90 minutes in a 7–0 friendly victory over Andorra at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon.[30] Duarte earned two additional caps in 2021, both as starts: on 24 March against Azerbaijan in a 1–0 World Cup qualifier win, and on 4 September versus Qatar in a 3–1 friendly victory.[31][32] Across his three senior appearances from 2020 to 2021, all as a centre-back, Duarte did not score any goals and accumulated 270 minutes of playing time.[32][31] As of November 2025, Duarte has not received any further call-ups or caps for Portugal, largely due to intense competition in the defensive unit from established players such as Rúben Dias and others.[32][31]Career statistics
