Jakub Stolarczyk
Jakub Stolarczyk (born 19 December 2000) is a Polish professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for EFL Championship club Leicester City.[1] Standing at 1.94 metres tall, he is a product of Leicester's youth academy, having joined the club from Polish seventh-tier side Piast Chęciny in 2017 at the age of 16 after being scouted at 14.[2] Stolarczyk made his senior debut for Leicester in August 2023 during the EFL Championship season, contributing to the team's promotion as champions that year with nine appearances and six clean sheets as deputy to Mads Hermansen.[3] He also plays for the Poland national team. Born in Kielce, Poland, Stolarczyk grew up idolizing fellow Polish goalkeeper Artur Boruc and was influenced by his father's career in the lower leagues of Polish football.[4] Upon arriving at Leicester, he drew further inspiration from club legend Kasper Schmeichel, whose own loan experiences mirrored Stolarczyk's path to first-team integration.[2] To gain senior experience, Stolarczyk was loaned out three times between 2022 and 2023: to Scottish Championship side Dunfermline Athletic from January to May 2022, where he made 13 appearances; to EFL League One club Fleetwood Town for the first half of the 2022–23 season, featuring in seven matches; and to National League side Hartlepool United later that year.[5] These spells helped develop his professional acumen before his breakthrough at Leicester.[2] Stolarczyk's 2023–24 campaign marked his establishment in the senior squad, including a league debut in a 1–0 victory over Huddersfield Town and recognition in Alan Shearer's Championship Team of the Week following a standout performance.[3] In the subsequent 2024–25 Premier League season, following Leicester's promotion, he made his top-flight debut on Boxing Day 2024 against Liverpool after Hermansen's injury, though a pre-season ankle injury sidelined him for up to six months earlier that year.[6] Leicester were relegated at the end of that season. As of November 2025, following Hermansen's departure to West Ham United, the 24-year-old has established himself as Leicester's first-choice goalkeeper in the 2025–26 EFL Championship season, with 14 appearances and 3 clean sheets before sustaining a groin injury on 5 November 2025, and remains a candidate to become the club's long-term number one.[7][8][9][10]Early life and youth career
Early career in Poland
Jakub Stolarczyk was born on 19 December 2000 in Kielce, Poland, where he grew up as a Polish national and developed an early interest in football as a goalkeeper. Standing at 1.94 meters tall, he began his youth development in the local football system near his hometown, focusing on foundational skills in amateur and regional setups typical of Polish grassroots programs.[1] Stolarczyk's initial involvement came through UKS Chęciny, a local youth club based in the Chęciny area under Kielce, where he trained from around 2011 to 2015 as a junior goalkeeper. This period exposed him to basic competitive play in regional youth leagues, emphasizing technical proficiency and team integration in Poland's decentralized youth structure. In 2015, at the age of 14, he progressed to Piast Chęciny, a seventh-division club in the same region, transitioning from junior to senior levels while still developing. During his time there from 2015 to 2017, Stolarczyk made 10 appearances in local league matches, gaining practical experience in adult competition that highlighted his potential despite the amateur environment.[11][12][13] A notable highlight in his Polish youth phase occurred in 2014, when, as a 14-year-old playing for a local side, Stolarczyk impressed scouts from Leicester City during a test match in Poland, marking an early international recognition of his talents. To further his skills, he also participated in individual training sessions with Marek Bęben, a respected Polish goalkeeper coach known for working with emerging talents. These experiences in Poland's lower-tier and youth ecosystems provided Stolarczyk with essential exposure to competitive pressures before his departure abroad in 2017.[14]Leicester City academy
Jakub Stolarczyk joined Leicester City's academy in 2017 at the age of 16, having been scouted from Polish seventh-tier club Piast Chęciny.[3] To facilitate his adaptation to life in England, Stolarczyk attended Beauchamp College, where he worked on improving his English language proficiency alongside his football development.[15] He advanced through the club's youth ranks, starting with the Under-18s before becoming a regular in the Under-21s side, where he established himself as a reliable goalkeeper. Over his academy tenure, Stolarczyk made 23 appearances for the U18s across three seasons and 33 for the U23s across two seasons, contributing to several competitive youth fixtures.[16][17] Stolarczyk's performances in the youth teams highlighted his strong shot-stopping reflexes, particularly in saving close-range and long-range efforts, which became hallmarks of his goalkeeping style during this period.[18]Club career
Loan to Dunfermline Athletic
In January 2022, Jakub Stolarczyk joined Scottish Championship club Dunfermline Athletic on loan from Leicester City until the end of the 2021–22 season, providing the 21-year-old goalkeeper with his first senior professional experience outside England.[19] The move was facilitated on the final day of the transfer window, allowing Stolarczyk to compete in Scotland's second tier and gain competitive minutes in a professional environment.[20] Stolarczyk made his professional debut for Dunfermline on 5 February 2022, starting in a 1–1 draw against Ayr United at East End Park, where he demonstrated composure in handling set pieces and distribution from the back.[21] Over the course of the loan, he featured in 13 appearances across all competitions, primarily in the Championship, establishing himself as the first-choice goalkeeper by mid-March and contributing to the team's defensive efforts with notable saves in high-pressure situations, such as a crucial stop during a 0–0 draw against promotion-chasing Kilmarnock on 26 February 2022.[21] He recorded three clean sheets, including shutouts in 2–0 victories over Raith Rovers and Arbroath, helping stabilize Dunfermline's backline during a challenging relegation battle that ultimately saw the club finish ninth.[21][22] Stolarczyk's performances were praised for his shot-stopping ability and command of the penalty area, with Dunfermline manager James McPake noting the loan signing's quick adaptation to the physical demands of Scottish football.[23] He conceded 13 goals in total during his time at the club, reflecting a solid return for a debut senior spell amid a mid-table campaign.[16] Upon returning to Leicester City at the end of the season in May 2022, Stolarczyk's loan was evaluated positively by the club's coaching staff as a key step in his development, highlighting his growth in handling senior-level pressure and readiness for further opportunities.[24]Loan to Fleetwood Town
On 15 August 2022, Jakub Stolarczyk joined EFL League One club Fleetwood Town on a season-long loan from Leicester City, signing a new contract with his parent club in the process.[22] The 21-year-old Poland youth international had previously gained experience during a loan at Scottish Championship side Dunfermline Athletic the prior season, where he made 13 appearances.[25] Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers praised Stolarczyk as a "really big talent" and emphasized the loan's aim to provide regular game time for his development.[25] At Fleetwood, he was expected to challenge established goalkeepers Jay Lynch and Alex Cairns for a place in the squad.[25] Stolarczyk integrated into the first-team training setup at Fleetwood's Highbury Stadium, benefiting from familiarity with goalkeeping coach Owain Fôn Williams, who had worked with him during the Dunfermline loan.[22] However, opportunities in league matches were scarce, as he failed to make any League One appearances across the half-season, instead featuring on the substitutes' bench for 17 games. This limited involvement stemmed from intense competition, with Jay Lynch established as the first-choice goalkeeper, starting 42 of Fleetwood's 46 league fixtures that season. Stolarczyk's playing time was confined to cup competitions, where he made seven appearances in total.[26] He debuted on 23 August 2022 in the EFL Cup second round, starting in a 1–0 defeat to Premier League side Everton at Highbury Stadium. Further outings came in the EFL Trophy group stage, with starts against Barrow (30 August), Liverpool U21s (20 September), and Tranmere Rovers (18 October), though Fleetwood endured heavy defeats in these youth-oriented ties. His most notable contributions occurred in the FA Cup, where he featured in all three ties as Fleetwood advanced to the fourth round for the first time in the club's history.[26] On 5 November 2022, Stolarczyk started in the first-round victory over National League South side Oxford City, securing a 3–1 win at home; he comfortably collected long-range efforts, including a low drive from Josh Parker, to help maintain defensive solidity.[27] In the second round on 27 November, he played the full 90 minutes in a 2–1 triumph against League Two's Swindon Town, making crucial interventions to preserve the lead. Stolarczyk's cup run concluded on 7 January 2023 with a third-round home loss to Premier League West Ham United (0–2), where he faced 15 shots but could not prevent Said Benrahma's brace. With no prospect of league minutes midway through the campaign, Stolarczyk was recalled by Leicester City on 13 January 2023, ending his loan after five months.[26] Fleetwood thanked him for his efforts in the cups, noting his role in their historic FA Cup progress.[26]Loan to Hartlepool United
On 23 January 2023, Jakub Stolarczyk joined EFL League Two club Hartlepool United on a loan from Leicester City until the end of the 2022–23 season, providing competition and depth in goal amid the team's relegation battle.[28] This move marked his third senior loan spell, building on prior experiences at Dunfermline Athletic and Fleetwood Town to further his development as a goalkeeper.[16] During his time at Hartlepool, Stolarczyk made 17 appearances, primarily in League Two, where he started regularly under manager John Askey following an initial period of rotation with the incumbent goalkeeper.[29] He conceded 25 goals across these outings but demonstrated defensive reliability, including claiming crosses confidently and contributing to set-piece defense with his aerial presence.[30] A standout performance came on 15 April 2023, when he kept his sole clean sheet of the loan in a 2–0 home victory over Newport County, helping secure a vital win in the club's fight against relegation.[29] Stolarczyk also earned praise for remarkable saves that were highlighted by the club's official channels, earning him the affectionate nickname "Jak the Cat" among supporters for his agility.[31] Stolarczyk's loan concluded at the end of the 2022–23 season in June 2023, after Hartlepool's relegation to the National League.[32] Reviews from the club emphasized his potential and professionalism, noting his disappointment in team setbacks and enthusiasm in successes, which underscored his commitment despite the challenging defensive environment.[31] This positive feedback highlighted his growth in handling senior EFL pressures, positioning him well for future opportunities.[33]First-team breakthrough at Leicester City
Stolarczyk made his senior debut for Leicester City on 9 August 2023, starting in a 2–0 away victory over Burton Albion in the first round of the EFL Cup.[3] Following loan spells that provided valuable lower-league experience, Stolarczyk's opportunities in the first team increased during the 2023–24 season, though limited by the presence of established goalkeepers. In March 2024, he earned widespread praise for a crucial penalty save against Raheem Sterling in the FA Cup quarter-final at Chelsea, denying the hosts an early lead in a match that ended 4–2 to Chelsea after extra time.[34] His progress was interrupted in July 2024 when he suffered a serious ankle injury during training, requiring surgery and sidelining him for up to six months.[6] Stolarczyk returned to action on 27 December 2024, making his Premier League debut in a 3–1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, where he completed the full 90 minutes and produced several key saves, including a notable stop from Trent Alexander-Arnold, earning commendation from manager Ruud van Nistelrooy for his composure despite the loss.[35][36] By the end of the 2024–25 Premier League season, which saw Leicester relegated, Stolarczyk had made 10 appearances. In recognition of his potential, he signed a one-year contract extension in June 2025, securing his stay at the club until 2027.[1][37] Stolarczyk solidified his role as Leicester's first-choice goalkeeper during the 2025–26 EFL Championship campaign, accumulating 15 appearances (14 in the league and 1 in the EFL Cup) as of November 2025 amid the team's mid-table position and inconsistent form.[38][39] His status was temporarily disrupted by a groin injury sustained at half-time in a 1–1 draw against Middlesbrough on 5 November 2025, ruling him out for several weeks.[40][8] Throughout the season, Stolarczyk has been a vocal presence in addressing the team's challenges, including fan unrest following a poor run of form. In early November 2025, he publicly acknowledged supporters' frustration as "understandable," urging the squad to take it "on the chin" and commit to improvement during a turbulent period marked by inconsistent results.[41]International career
Youth international career
Stolarczyk began his youth international career with Poland in 2017, shortly after joining the Leicester City academy, where his promising performances as a goalkeeper earned him selection for the national youth setup. On 7 November 2017, he made his debut for the Poland U18 team in a friendly match against Austria, playing the full 90 minutes in a 3–2 defeat.[42] Two days later, on 9 November 2017, he started again in the return friendly, securing a clean sheet in a 1–0 victory over Austria after another complete 90-minute appearance.[42] His progression aligned with his development at Leicester's youth ranks, leading to a call-up for the Poland U19 side in 2018. Stolarczyk featured in a single friendly international on 6 September 2018 against Scotland in Opole, starting in goal during a 1–3 loss.[43][44] This appearance highlighted his growing reputation but remained his only outing at the U19 level. By 2021, as he continued to feature regularly for Leicester's U21 team, Stolarczyk received his first Poland U21 call-up for UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying. He started and played the full match on 29 March 2021 against Austria in Klagenfurt, contributing to a competitive performance in a 2–0 defeat despite the result.[45][46] He was named to the squad again for a qualifying game against Hungary on 29 March 2022 but remained an unused substitute. These limited caps through 2023 reflected his role as a developing backup option in Poland's youth teams, complementing his club academy experience without further starts.Senior international career
As of November 2025, Jakub Stolarczyk has not made any senior appearances for the Poland national football team.[47] Born in Kielce, Poland, Stolarczyk holds full eligibility to represent his country at the senior international level without any dual-nationality complications. Despite his progression through Poland's youth teams, he has yet to receive a call-up to the senior squad, largely due to intense competition for the goalkeeper position from established players such as Łukasz Skorupski of Bologna, Marcin Bułka of Nice, and Kamil Grabara of VfL Wolfsburg, who have been regular selections in recent UEFA Nations League and World Cup qualifying matches. For instance, the Poland squad announced in August 2025 for fixtures against the Netherlands and Finland included Drągowski, Grabara, Mrozek, and Skorupski as goalkeepers, with no place for Stolarczyk.[48][49] Stolarczyk's club commitments at Leicester City, where he established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper during the 2025/26 EFL Championship season, have coincided with international windows, potentially limiting opportunities amid Poland's packed schedule of World Cup qualifiers. Prior to a groin injury sustained in early November 2025 during a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough—which is expected to sideline him for several weeks—Stolarczyk had shown strong form, featuring in 13 matches, making 19 saves, and securing three clean sheets, performances that positioned him as a prospect for future consideration by the Polish FA.[40][50][9] No records exist of Stolarczyk's involvement in senior training camps or standby lists for Poland since 2023, though his youth international experience has served as a foundational pathway toward potential senior integration. His ongoing recovery and return to form at Leicester could enhance prospects for a debut call-up in upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers, given the depth needs in Poland's goalkeeping roster.[47][51]Career statistics
