Joe Nuttall
Joseph Andre Nuttall (born 27 January 1997) is an English professional footballer who plays as a striker for Morecambe in the National League.[1][2] Nuttall developed through the youth academy at Manchester City before signing his first professional contract with Aberdeen in June 2015.[3][4] He made his senior debut for the club as a substitute in a Scottish Premiership match against Heart of Midlothian on 12 May 2016, appearing twice for the first team during his time there.[4][5][6] Released by Aberdeen in 2017, Nuttall joined Blackburn Rovers, where he scored five goals in 15 appearances across all competitions during the 2017–18 season and earned a contract extension.[7] His career has since included loan and permanent moves to Blackpool in 2019, Scunthorpe United in 2020, Oldham Athletic in 2022, and Altrincham in 2024.[8][9] In August 2025, he signed a one-year deal with Morecambe on a free transfer ahead of the 2025–26 season.[3] Nuttall has also represented England C, the national semi-professional team, earning caps in non-competitive internationals.[1]Career
Manchester City
Joseph Andre Nuttall was born on 27 January 1997 in Bury, England, where he developed an early interest in football that led him to join the Manchester City academy in 2013 at the age of 16.[2][4] During his two-year stint in the academy from 2013 to 2015, Nuttall focused on intensive youth training programs, participation in competitive matches within youth leagues such as the UEFA Youth League and domestic under-18 competitions, and the refinement of his skills as a powerful centre-forward known for his aerial ability and finishing.[4][10] He progressed through the under-18 and under-21 squads but did not earn any senior appearances for Manchester City's first team.[1] In 2015, Nuttall left the Manchester City academy to pursue greater senior-level opportunities, marking his transition to Aberdeen where he secured his first professional contract.[11]Aberdeen
In the summer of 2015, Joe Nuttall signed his first professional contract with Aberdeen on a two-year deal at the age of 18, having joined from the Manchester City academy as a promising young striker after impressing on trial.[12][11] During the 2016–17 season, Nuttall made two senior appearances for Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership, both as a substitute, without scoring any goals.[13] His debut came on 16 May 2016, entering as an 81st-minute substitute in a 1–0 home defeat to Heart of Midlothian.[14] To gain competitive senior experience, Nuttall was loaned to Scottish League Two side Stranraer from November 2016 to January 2017, where he made 9 appearances and scored 2 goals.[2] Later that season, from March to May 2017, he joined Scottish Championship club Dumbarton on an emergency loan until the end of the campaign, featuring in 2 substitute appearances without scoring.[15][2] Nuttall was released by Aberdeen in May 2017 at the end of his contract, having spent two seasons with the club without achieving any major honours or significant first-team breakthroughs.[16] Following his release, he joined Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer to pursue greater playing opportunities.[7]Blackburn Rovers
Joe Nuttall joined Blackburn Rovers from Aberdeen's youth academy on 22 July 2017, signing an initial one-year contract with an option to extend for an undisclosed fee.[7][17] At 20 years old, the striker began his time at the club featuring prominently for the under-23 side in Premier League 2, where he scored prolifically, including a hat-trick in a 5-1 opening-day win over Wolverhampton Wanderers under-23s.[18] His strong form in youth matches earned him a contract extension in January 2018 to a three-and-a-half-year deal until 2021.[7] Nuttall broke into the senior squad during the 2017–18 League One season, making 13 appearances and scoring two league goals as Blackburn secured automatic promotion as champions.[19] His contributions included a debut league goal in a 2-2 draw against Fleetwood Town on 31 October 2017 and another in a 3-1 victory over Fleetwood later that season, helping maintain momentum in the promotion push.[20] He also netted in cup competitions, such as the equaliser in a 3-1 FA Cup first-round win over Barnet.[21] Overall, Nuttall's integration into the first team provided depth to the forward line during a successful campaign that ended with Blackburn lifting the League One title. In the 2018–19 Championship season, Nuttall's opportunities were limited due to increased competition for places, with only five league appearances and no goals at the senior level.[22] He continued to feature occasionally in cups and maintained scoring form in under-23 matches, but his overall first-team involvement across both seasons totalled 37 appearances and eight goals in all competitions.[23] His contract expired, and he was released by Blackburn in August 2019, subsequently joining Blackpool on a three-year deal.[23]Blackpool
In August 2019, Joe Nuttall transferred to Blackpool from Blackburn Rovers for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year contract as a 22-year-old seeking consistent first-team opportunities in League One.[23] Nuttall made 27 league appearances and scored 2 goals for Blackpool across the 2019–20, 2020–21, and 2021–22 seasons, with his efforts hampered by recurring injuries, squad rotation under managers Neil Critchley and Simon Grayson, and disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic that curtailed the 2019–20 campaign and altered scheduling in 2020–21.[24] Notable contributions included a stoppage-time header that secured a 2–1 victory over Ipswich Town on 29 February 2020, marking one of his key League One strikes during a season where Blackpool finished 13th.[25] Overall, he featured in 33 matches and netted 4 goals across all competitions, including cup ties, but struggled to establish himself as a regular starter amid competition from forwards like Jerry Yates and Gary Madine.[26] To build match fitness, Nuttall joined Northampton Town on a season-long loan in League Two on 31 August 2020.[27] However, the move yielded limited returns, with only 1 appearance and 0 goals before the loan ended prematurely in October 2020 following knee surgery that required rehabilitation back at Blackpool.[28] After continued inconsistent involvement, Nuttall departed Blackpool in January 2022, transferring to Scunthorpe United for an undisclosed fee in search of a fresh start in League Two.[29]Scunthorpe United
In January 2022, Joe Nuttall joined Scunthorpe United on an 18-month contract as a permanent signing from Blackpool for an undisclosed fee.[30] At age 25, he provided much-needed attacking reinforcement during a challenging relegation fight in League Two.[29] Nuttall featured prominently in the second half of the 2021–22 season, making 13 appearances and scoring 2 goals as Scunthorpe's forward line sought stability amid defensive vulnerabilities.[24] His integration helped bolster the team's offensive output in key matches, though Scunthorpe ultimately finished 24th and were relegated to the National League after a dismal campaign.[31] In the subsequent 2022–23 National League season, Nuttall established himself as the primary striker with a consistent starting role, contributing 9 goals across 23 outings before his departure.[24] Overall, in 36 appearances for the club, he netted 11 goals—his most prolific return to date—often leading the press and linking play to support a struggling side.[32] Despite Nuttall's personal form aiding efforts to steady the attack, Scunthorpe endured another poor season and faced further relegation pressures.[33] On 9 December 2022, after 11 months and 35 total outings, his contract was terminated early via a permanent transfer to Oldham Athletic for an undisclosed fee, enabling a move to another National League club for continued development.[34][4]Oldham Athletic
In December 2022, Joe Nuttall transferred to Oldham Athletic from Scunthorpe United for an undisclosed fee, signing a contract until the end of 2025 at the age of 25.[4] He quickly established himself as a key forward in the National League, making 35 appearances and scoring 8 goals across the 2022–25 period, though his contributions were hampered by the team's overall struggles in the lower reaches of the division.[32] To rebuild his form amid limited starts at Oldham, Nuttall joined Cheltenham Town on loan from January to May 2024.[36] During this spell in League Two, he featured in 16 matches and netted 2 goals, gaining valuable experience with a mid-table side but delivering only a modest impact before returning.[13] Nuttall's next loan came with Altrincham in the National League from July 2024 to June 2025, where he made 26 appearances and scored 4 goals, contributing to the team's competitive push for promotion while regaining his confidence as a starter.[32][13] Following the expiry of his contract, Oldham Athletic released Nuttall in June 2025, concluding a three-year association that yielded no major successes for the club.[37][38] He subsequently signed as a free agent with Morecambe ahead of the 2025–26 season.[3]Morecambe
Joe Nuttall joined Morecambe on a one-year contract as a free agent on 23 August 2025, at the age of 28, to serve as a centre-forward wearing the number 21 shirt.[3][39] He arrived following his release from Oldham Athletic, where he had spent the prior season on loan at Altrincham, making 26 appearances to regain form.[39] In the 2025–26 National League season, Nuttall has featured in Morecambe's squad rebuild after the club's relegation from EFL League Two and resolution of financial challenges that lifted a transfer embargo.[40][41] As of 20 November 2025, he has made 10 appearances, accumulating 462 minutes and scoring 2 goals, both in a single match against Boston United on 21 October 2025.[40] Nuttall's prior experience at clubs including Aberdeen, Blackpool, and Scunthorpe United positions him as a veteran presence, contributing leadership and physicality to a young, reshaped Morecambe attack focused on promotion back to the Football League.[42][43] His integration has emphasized fitness recovery from previous loans, aiding the team's early-season adaptation despite an inconsistent start.[41] No individual honours or major milestones have been achieved at Morecambe to date.[1]International career
Joe Nuttall earned a single cap for the England C national team, which represents semi-professional players, during his time at Oldham Athletic in 2023.[44][1] He was selected as a late call-up following withdrawals from the original squad and started in the centre-forward position for England C's 1-0 victory over Wales C on 21 March 2023 at Moss Lane, Altrincham.[45][46] Nuttall did not score in the match, which was decided by a goal from Ryan De Havilland.[47][48] His selection was based on consistent performances in the National League, marking the extent of his international exposure at the semi-professional level, with no further caps or appearances for England C, youth teams, or the senior national side recorded.[44][49]Statistics and honours
