Jonathan Gradit
Jonathan Gradit (born 24 November 1992) is a French professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Ligue 1 club RC Lens.[1][2] Born in Talence, Gironde, Gradit is 1.80 metres (5 ft 11 in) tall and right-footed, having developed through the youth academies of Club Pyrénées Aquitaine and Girondins de Bordeaux, with a season at Bayonne, before turning professional with Tours in 2014.[2][3] He spent four seasons at Tours (2014–2018), making 146 appearances and scoring one goal, before joining Caen in 2018, where he accumulated 29 appearances. Following his time at Caen, including two early Ligue 2 matches in the 2019–20 season, Gradit signed a two-year deal with RC Lens on 20 August 2019 for a reported €400,000 transfer fee.[4] At Lens, Gradit played a pivotal role in the club's defensive solidity during the 2019–20 Ligue 2 season, contributing to their promotion to Ligue 1 as champions despite the campaign being curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.[5] Since then, he has remained a mainstay in the squad, making 192 appearances and scoring two goals across Ligue 1, UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers, and domestic cups as of November 2025.[4] His contract was extended multiple times, most recently in April 2025, securing his stay until June 2028.[2] Known for his versatility—capable of playing right-back—and reliability in aerial duels and tackling, Gradit has been described as an underappreciated yet essential component of Lens's resurgence in French football.[5]Club career
2011–2013: Bordeaux and Bayonne
Jonathan Gradit was born on 24 November 1992 in Talence, France, a suburb of Bordeaux. He began his football development in local clubs before joining the youth academy of FC Girondins de Bordeaux in 2003 at the age of 10, where he progressed through the various age groups over the next seven years.[2] In the 2011–12 season, Gradit transitioned to the reserve team, Bordeaux B, competing in the Championnat de France Amateur 2 (CFA 2), the fifth tier of French football. As a promising centre-back, he featured regularly in the defensive line, making 23 appearances across the campaign without scoring any goals, gaining valuable experience in competitive senior-level matches.[6][7] Seeking greater opportunities, Gradit left Bordeaux on a free transfer and signed his first senior professional contract with Aviron Bayonnais FC on 17 July 2012, remaining in the southwest region of France. At Bayonne, he adapted quickly to full senior team demands in the Championnat de France Amateur (CFA), the fourth tier, where he became a key part of the backline during the 2012–13 season. Gradit recorded 29 appearances and contributed 2 goals, often from set-piece situations, while providing solid defensive contributions that helped stabilize the team's rear guard amid a challenging campaign.[6][8] Notable developmental milestones included his first senior starts in August 2012 against teams like Lyon B, where his composure and positioning as a centre-back earned praise from coaches, marking his emergence as a reliable defender capable of handling physical lower-division battles.[9]2013–2018: Tours
In the summer of 2013, Jonathan Gradit transferred to Tours FC from Aviron Bayonnais, beginning his tenure with the club's reserve team in the Championnat de France Amateur 2. Over the next five years, he made 14 appearances for Tours B without scoring, gaining experience in lower divisions while awaiting a first-team opportunity.[6] Gradit earned promotion to Tours' senior squad in early 2014, making his Ligue 2 debut on 10 March 2014 as a substitute in a 2–0 home victory over Angers SCO. He quickly integrated into the defense, establishing himself as a reliable centre-back alongside partners like Benjamin Angoua and Oumar Diarra during the 2014–15 season, where Tours finished 15th in the league.[10] His consistent performances, including strong aerial duels and positional discipline, contributed to the team's defensive stability in subsequent mid-table campaigns. Over four full seasons with the first team from 2014 to 2018, Gradit appeared in 132 Ligue 2 matches, scoring his only goal for the club on 3 November 2017, equalizing in a 3–2 victory over Bourg-en-Bresse Péronnas, which marked a rare attacking contribution from the defender.[3] This period solidified his professional status, as he became a regular starter in 2015–16 and 2016–17, helping Tours achieve 9th and 16th-place finishes respectively amid a competitive Ligue 2 field. His tenure totaled 146 appearances across all competitions, with 1 goal and 3 assists, underscoring his role in maintaining squad depth and contributing to 12 clean sheets in league play during his peak seasons.[4]2018–2019: Caen
On 14 July 2018, Jonathan Gradit transferred from Tours to SM Caen, signing a two-year contract to bolster the team's Ligue 1 defence. During the 2018–19 season, Gradit made 23 appearances in Ligue 1 for Caen, starting 22 matches and accumulating 1,922 minutes without scoring a goal or providing an assist.[11] He primarily featured as a right-back or centre-back, adapting to the faster pace of top-flight football after consistent performances in Ligue 2. In addition to his first-team duties, he played one match for Caen B in the Championnat National 3. Gradit's contributions were notable in a defensively challenged Caen side that struggled throughout the campaign, conceding 54 goals in Ligue 1.[12] He averaged around 2 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per 90 minutes in league play, providing stability in high-pressure fixtures amid the team's relegation battle.[13] Caen ultimately finished 19th with 33 points from 7 wins, 12 draws, and 19 losses, resulting in direct relegation to Ligue 2.[14] Despite the two-year deal, Gradit's tenure lasted only one season, as the club's drop to the second tier prompted him to seek greater sporting assurances elsewhere.[15]2019–present: Lens
On 20 August 2019, Jonathan Gradit joined RC Lens from Caen on a two-year contract for a transfer fee of €400,000, entering the club in Ligue 2.[2][16] During the 2019–2020 Ligue 2 season, Gradit established himself as a regular starter at centre-back, featuring in 11 league matches and contributing to Lens's defensive solidity that saw the team finish second and secure automatic promotion to Ligue 1.[3] His consistent performances helped anchor a backline that conceded just 24 goals in 28 matches before the season was curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since promotion, Gradit has been a mainstay in Ligue 1, accumulating 192 appearances and 2 goals across all competitions as of November 2025.[4] His debut Ligue 1 goal came on 5 February 2023, an 83rd-minute equalizer in a 1–1 draw against Brest, rescuing a point for Lens in a crucial match.[17] The second goal arrived on 12 November 2023, a header in a 1–0 victory over Marseille, underscoring his growing offensive threat from set pieces.[18] In the standout 2022–2023 season, Gradit played 33 Ligue 1 matches, helping Lens achieve a second-place finish with 84 points and qualification for the UEFA Champions League group stage—the club's first European appearance since 2006.[19] His defensive contributions, including high duel win rates and interceptions, were integral to a campaign that saw Lens lose only four league games.[20] Wearing jersey number 24 since the 2023–2024 season, Gradit continues to be a key figure in Lens's defense during the 2025–2026 Ligue 1 campaign, where he has already logged 10 appearances by early November, supporting the team's push for another strong top-half finish.[21] In November 2025, Gradit received a one-match suspension in Ligue 1 for using a homophobic slur.[22]Career statistics
