Youth career
Liam Cullen was born on 23 April 1999 in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales, where he began playing organized football at a young age. He joined the local Kilgetty AFC under-8s team around the age of five or six, with his father serving as his first coach.[9][10] At the age of seven or eight, Cullen entered the Swansea City academy system in 2007, starting with the development centre before progressing through the age-group teams from under-9 to under-23 levels.[2][1] A lifelong Swansea City supporter, he demonstrated early promise by making his debut for the under-18s side at just 13 years old, an unusually young age for that level.[5][10] Throughout his youth career, Cullen established himself as a consistent performer in Swansea's academy leagues, regularly contributing goals and assists in competitive fixtures. In the 2018-19 season with the under-23s, he scored 10 goals, showcasing his development as a forward. His standout form continued into early 2020, when he earned the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award for January after netting 10 goals in four appearances across various competitions.[2][11] Cullen's progression culminated in August 2018, when he signed his first professional contract with Swansea City at the age of 19, marking the transition from academy prospect to senior squad member.[12]Early senior career and loans
Cullen made his senior debut for Swansea City on 28 August 2018, coming on as a substitute in a 1–0 EFL Cup second-round defeat to Crystal Palace.[3][13] This appearance marked his breakthrough from the academy, where he had developed since joining at age eight, into first-team contention.[2] Over the following seasons, Cullen's opportunities at Swansea remained limited, with intense competition for forward positions restricting him to sporadic involvement. Between his debut and January 2022, he accumulated 38 senior appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 4 goals. His first league goal came on 22 July 2020, a late half-volley in a 4–1 Championship victory over Reading that secured Swansea's play-off spot.[14][15] The 2020–21 season was particularly disrupted by an ankle injury, further hindering consistent game time despite 17 appearances and 3 goals that year.[2][16] To gain regular minutes, Cullen joined League One side Lincoln City on loan on 13 January 2022 until the end of the 2021–22 season.[17] He made his debut for the Imps shortly after and scored his sole goal for the club on 12 February 2022, opening the scoring in a 1–1 home draw against Wycombe Wanderers.[18] Overall, the loan spell yielded 20 appearances and 1 goal, providing valuable experience in a competitive environment.[19]Return to Swansea and breakthrough
Cullen returned to Swansea City in the summer of 2022 following a loan spell at Lincoln City that enhanced his fitness and confidence. However, his reintegration was hampered by a dislocated shoulder injury sustained in September 2022, which sidelined him for several weeks and limited his early-season minutes.[20][21] Cullen's breakthrough came on 17 December 2022, when he scored an 84th-minute equaliser as a substitute in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Coventry City, completing Swansea's comeback from three goals down. This goal marked a turning point, propelling him into a more consistent first-team role as a forward or attacking midfielder. He concluded the 2022-23 EFL Championship season with 9 goals in 32 appearances, establishing himself as a key contributor.[22][1][23] Over the subsequent seasons, Cullen's role solidified at his boyhood club, where he signed his first professional contract in 2018, extending it multiple times, including to 2025 in April 2024 and most recently to summer 2028 on 29 October 2025. In the 2024-25 Championship campaign, he emerged as Swansea's top scorer with 12 goals and 3 assists, showcasing his versatility and importance to the squad despite occasional injury setbacks.[5][24][25]International career
Youth international career
Cullen began his international career with the Wales youth teams at the age of 14, making his debut for the under-16 side in 2013 before quickly progressing to the under-17 level.[10] His under-17 debut came on 8 April 2014 in a 2-1 friendly win over Montenegro, where he scored the opening goal after just seven minutes.[26] Between January 2014 and March 2016, he accumulated 9 caps and 2 goals for the Wales U17 team, contributing to development matches and qualifiers.[19] Advancing through the age groups, Cullen earned 5 caps and scored 3 goals for the Wales U19 team from January 2016 to November 2018, including appearances in UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifying campaigns.[27] He also featured for the Wales U20 side in 3 matches between May 2017 and October 2020, though without finding the net.[19] His versatility was evident in these setups, where he frequently deployed on the wings despite his primary role as a central striker.[28] Cullen made his Wales U21 debut on 12 October 2018, playing 62 minutes in a 2-0 friendly victory against Liechtenstein. He went on to secure 8 caps and 1 goal for the U21s from August 2017 to November 2020, with notable contributions including a stunning long-range strike in a 1-0 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in November 2019.[29] By 2023, Cullen had amassed approximately 29 youth international caps across all levels.[10]Senior international career
Liam Cullen earned his first senior call-up to the Wales national team in September 2023, following a strong start to the 2023-24 season with Swansea City, where he scored four goals in his opening eight Championship appearances. He made his debut as a substitute in a 4-0 friendly victory over Gibraltar on 11 October 2023 at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham, replacing Tom Bradshaw in the 62nd minute under manager Rob Page. This appearance marked Cullen's transition from the youth international setup to the senior squad, where he provided energy in attack during the comfortable win. Following Page's dismissal in November 2023, Cullen retained his place in the squad under interim and subsequent management, including Craig Bellamy, who was appointed head coach in July 2024. His consistent performances at club level, including 7 goals across all competitions in the 2023-24 season, justified repeated selections, often deploying him as a versatile forward capable of playing centrally or wide.[3] As of November 2025, Cullen had accumulated 13 senior caps, featuring in UEFA Nations League fixtures and World Cup qualifiers, where he contributed to Wales' promotion to the top tier of the Nations League in 2024.[30] He continued to feature in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, including a substitute appearance in a 1-0 away win over Liechtenstein on 15 November 2025.[31] Cullen scored his first senior international goals with a brace during a 4-1 UEFA Nations League victory against Iceland on 19 November 2024 at Cardiff City Stadium.[8] Trailing 1-0 early, he equalized with a header from a Brennan Johnson cross in the 32nd minute before adding a second goal in stoppage time of the first half, tapping in after Dan James' shot was parried by the goalkeeper, sparking a comeback that sealed promotion for Wales under Bellamy.[32] This man-of-the-match performance highlighted his growing importance in the post-Page era, with Bellamy praising Cullen's work rate and finishing as key to the team's attacking fluidity.[33]Career statistics
