Sam Surridge
Samuel William Surridge (born 28 July 1998) is an English professional footballer who plays as a striker for Major League Soccer club Nashville SC.[1] Standing at 1.90 metres tall, he joined Nashville as a designated player on 25 July 2023 on a contract expiring 31 December 2026, marking his transition from English football to the American top flight.[1][2] Surridge began his career in the youth academy of AFC Bournemouth, where he turned professional in 2016 before gaining experience through loans to lower-league clubs such as Yeovil Town and Oldham Athletic.[3] His breakthrough came during a loan at Stoke City in the 2020–21 season, followed by a permanent transfer to Nottingham Forest in 2021, where he contributed to their promotion to the Premier League with seven goals in the Championship.[3] After two seasons with Forest, including limited appearances in the top flight, he moved to Nashville SC seeking regular playing time.[1] In his time with Nashville, Surridge has emerged as one of the league's top goalscorers, netting 24 goals in the 2025 MLS regular season to finish tied for second in the Golden Boot race behind Lionel Messi's 29 and alongside Denis Bouanga's 24.[4] He also scored the winning goal in the 2025 U.S. Open Cup final, securing the title for Nashville, and was named a finalist for the 2025 Landon Donovan MLS MVP award.[5][6] Across his career, Surridge has made 283 senior appearances and scored 117 goals.[3]Club career
Youth career and early loans
Samuel William Surridge was born on 28 July 1998 in Slough, Berkshire, England. He initially joined AFC Bournemouth's academy setup at the age of nine but elected to leave for local club Bournemouth Sports before rejoining the Cherries at age 14 in 2012. Surridge quickly progressed through the club's youth ranks, featuring prominently for the under-18 and development squads, where he honed his abilities as a centre-forward known for his physical presence and goal-scoring instinct. In 2016, Surridge signed his first professional contract with AFC Bournemouth, a two-year deal that marked his transition from youth prospect to senior squad member. To gain competitive experience at a senior level, he was loaned out to non-league clubs early in his professional career. Surridge's first loan came in the 2015–16 season to Southern League Premier Division side Weymouth, where he made seven appearances and scored one goal, providing his initial taste of adult football. The following campaign, during 2016–17, he moved to National League South club Poole Town on loan, contributing eight goals in 15 appearances across all competitions and demonstrating his clinical finishing in lower-tier matches. In August 2017, Surridge joined League Two club Yeovil Town on a season-long loan. He made 41 league appearances, scoring 8 goals, and helped the team avoid relegation while gaining valuable experience in the Football League. The loan was cut short in January 2018, but he had scored 10 goals across all competitions in 53 appearances. On 30 July 2018, Surridge was loaned to another League Two side, Oldham Athletic, initially for the season. He scored 12 goals in 20 league appearances before being recalled by Bournemouth in January 2019, earning the League Two Player of the Month award for September with five goals in four matches. These loans were instrumental in building his physicality, match sharpness, and understanding of professional demands as a target man striker.AFC Bournemouth
Surridge joined AFC Bournemouth's academy at the age of 14 and progressed through the youth ranks, earning productive loan spells at non-league clubs like Poole Town before breaking into the senior setup.[7] Following his return from a loan at Oldham Athletic in January 2019, Surridge made his senior debut for Bournemouth on 27 February 2019, coming on as a substitute in a 5–1 Premier League defeat to Arsenal, where he played the final 11 minutes.[8][9] His second appearance came on 12 May 2019, again as a late substitute for just two minutes in a 1–1 Premier League draw away to Crystal Palace.[8] Surridge's opportunities remained limited during Bournemouth's time in the Premier League, with a total of six substitute appearances across the 2018–19 and 2019–20 seasons, accumulating only 38 minutes of league action and no goals.[10] This scarcity stemmed from intense competition for places up front, particularly from established strikers such as Josh King and Callum Wilson, who dominated the starting lineup under manager Eddie Howe.[11] Despite his frustration with bench roles, Surridge signed a contract extension in January 2018, securing his stay until June 2019, as recognition of his potential following successful lower-league loans.[12] Bournemouth's relegation to the EFL Championship at the conclusion of the 2019–20 Premier League season marked a turning point, but Surridge's pathway to regular minutes had already prompted a season-long loan move to Swansea City in August 2019 to gain consistent first-team experience. He had been recalled from Swansea in January 2020 and extended his contract with Bournemouth to 2024 just days later, signaling the club's ongoing investment in his development amid the relegation battle.[13]Swansea City (loan)
On 6 August 2019, Swansea City secured Sam Surridge on a season-long loan from AFC Bournemouth, aiming to bolster their attacking options in the EFL Championship.[14] The 21-year-old forward, who had previously impressed on loans in lower divisions with Yeovil Town and Oldham Athletic, quickly integrated into the squad under manager Steve Cooper. Surridge made his debut for Swansea in the EFL Cup second round against Northampton Town on 13 August 2019, coming off the bench in a 1-1 draw that advanced the Swans on penalties.[15] His league debut followed shortly after, and he marked his breakthrough in senior Championship football by scoring his first goal for the club as a substitute in a 3-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers on 20 August 2019, sealing the win with a composed finish.[16] Surridge's loan spell proved transformative, as he netted seven goals across 23 appearances in all competitions before being recalled by Bournemouth on 1 January 2020 to support their Premier League survival bid. Of those goals, four came in the Championship, where his physical presence, work rate, and clinical finishing earned praise from Cooper, who highlighted Surridge's ability to link play and press aggressively.[17][18] Key contributions included a stoppage-time header to secure a 2-1 win at Wigan Athletic on 2 November 2019, which propelled Swansea to second in the table at the time, and his first goals at the Liberty Stadium—a brace in a 6-0 EFL Cup win over Cambridge United on 28 August 2019.[19][18] These moments underscored his growing impact, with Surridge adding energy to a forward line that helped Swansea maintain a strong position in the promotion race. Surridge's performances were instrumental in Swansea's push for the playoffs, as the team finished sixth in the Championship with 67 points from 46 matches, securing a postseason spot. However, their campaign ended in disappointment with a 3-1 aggregate defeat to Brentford in the playoff semi-finals. Cooper lauded Surridge's professionalism and development, noting his seven goals demonstrated untapped potential despite limited starts, often due to competition from established strikers like Borja Bastón.[17] The recall to Bournemouth ended the loan prematurely, but it marked Surridge's first taste of consistent senior minutes at a competitive level, setting the stage for future opportunities.Stoke City
On 4 August 2021, Sam Surridge joined Stoke City from AFC Bournemouth on a permanent four-year deal for an initial fee of £2.5 million, potentially rising to £5.5 million with add-ons.[20][21] The move followed a productive loan spell at Swansea City the previous season, where he had scored six goals in 22 Championship appearances, building momentum for his first permanent transfer outside Bournemouth.[1] Under manager Michael O'Neill, Surridge was signed to bolster Stoke's attacking options as they aimed to improve on a 15th-place finish in the 2020–21 Championship. Surridge made an immediate impact, scoring the winning goal on his debut in a 3–2 home victory over Reading on 7 August 2021, securing Stoke's first opening-day win since 2009.[22] He featured regularly as a substitute during the 2021–22 season, making 20 league appearances with six starts and accumulating 696 minutes, while totaling 24 appearances across all competitions with four goals and one assist.[3] His other goals came in the EFL Cup against Fleetwood Town and in league matches against Barnsley and Blackpool, contributing to Stoke's solid mid-table form before his departure.[23] On 31 January 2022, Surridge transferred to Nottingham Forest for an undisclosed fee, reported to be around £2.2 million, after just six months at Stoke.[24] The move came amid Stoke's 16th-place standing in the Championship and ongoing squad rebuild under O'Neill, with the club seeking to recoup investment in the 23-year-old striker.Nottingham Forest
On 31 January 2022, Surridge signed for Nottingham Forest from Stoke City on a two-and-a-half-year contract for an undisclosed fee, reported to be around £2 million.[25][26] He made his debut for the club five days later, substituting in the 71st minute during a 4–1 FA Cup fourth-round victory over Leicester City at the City Ground.[27][28] Surridge quickly integrated into the squad under manager Steve Cooper, with whom he had previously worked during a loan at Swansea City. Building on his prior Championship success at Stoke City, he featured in 17 league matches during the second half of the 2021–22 season, scoring 7 goals—including a hat-trick in a 5–1 win over Swansea—that helped Forest secure promotion via the play-offs.[29][30] His contributions extended to cup competitions, where he scored on his full start in a 2–1 FA Cup fifth-round win against Huddersfield Town.[31] Following promotion, Surridge's role diminished in the 2022–23 Premier League campaign amid heightened squad depth, with arrivals like Taiwo Awoniyi and Chris Wood competing for forward positions, alongside his own injury setbacks.[32][33] He made 20 league appearances, primarily as a substitute, netting just 1 goal—a late equalizer against his former club AFC Bournemouth in January 2023.[34][35] Overall, across all competitions, Surridge recorded 50 appearances and 9 goals for Forest.[36] By mid-2023, with limited opportunities persisting, Surridge and the club mutually agreed to pursue a new challenge, culminating in his permanent transfer to Nashville SC in July.[29]Nashville SC
On 25 July 2023, Sam Surridge joined Major League Soccer club Nashville SC from Nottingham Forest as the team's third Designated Player, signing a contract through 2026 with a club option for 2027, for a reported transfer fee in the region of £5 million.[37][38][29] Surridge made his MLS debut on 26 August 2023, starting in a 4–0 away defeat to Atlanta United FC, where he played 68 minutes.[39] In his partial 2023 season, he appeared in 6 MLS regular-season matches, scoring 2 goals, while adding 3 goals in the Leagues Cup for a total of 4 goals across 11 competitive appearances.[40][41] The 2024 season marked Surridge's full integration into MLS, where he scored 12 goals in 27 regular-season appearances. Nashville SC finished 13th in the Eastern Conference.[40] Surridge's 2025 campaign elevated him to stardom, with 24 goals and 5 assists in 33 regular-season matches (3,000+ minutes played), placing him among the league's top scorers and in contention for the MLS Golden Boot presented by Audi alongside Lionel Messi and Denis Bouanga in a tight race that went to Decision Day.[40][42][43] Nashville finished sixth in the Eastern Conference, securing another playoff berth.[44] Key highlights included Surridge's decisive penalty in the 60th minute, securing a 2–1 victory for Nashville SC in the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final against Austin FC on 1 October 2025, earning him the tournament's Golden Boot with 6 goals across 3 matches, including a semifinal hat-trick against Philadelphia Union.[5][45][46] This triumph marked Nashville's first major trophy and Surridge's first silverware in professional football.[47] Surridge adapted swiftly to MLS's high-intensity, physical style, earning praise for his robust aerial presence, hold-up play, and clinical finishing inside the penalty area, which suited the league's end-to-end nature compared to his limited Premier League minutes.[48][49] By November 2025, with his contract set to expire after 2026, reports indicated ongoing discussions for an extension amid his MVP finalist status and club-record goal tally.[6][50] Across his MLS tenure through the end of the 2025 regular season, Surridge amassed 38 goals in 66 appearances.[40]International career
Youth international career
Surridge received his first call-up to the England U21 squad on 8 October 2019. He made his debut three days later, scoring in a 2–2 draw against Slovenia on 11 October 2019. He went on to earn 3 caps and score 1 goal for the England U21 team. Overall, Surridge accumulated 3 youth caps and 1 goal for England, earning recognition for his physical presence and target-man qualities as a striker.Senior international career
Surridge has not received a senior international cap for England as of November 2025.[51] Born in Slough, England, Surridge is eligible solely for the England national team and holds no ties to other international federations.[1] Despite progressing through England's youth ranks up to the under-21 level, he has not been selected for the senior squad under managers Gareth Southgate or his successor Thomas Tuchel, even amid his prolific form in Major League Soccer during the 2025 season.[49] Surridge's standout performances with Nashville SC, where he led the MLS in expected goals (xG) with 25.5 and finished third in the Golden Boot race with 23 goals, have highlighted his scoring prowess but have yet to translate into senior international recognition.[6] He has publicly expressed his ambition to earn an England call-up, emphasizing that consistent goal-scoring is key to gaining notice from selectors, though he has prioritized establishing success at club level in the interim.[49]Career statistics
