Shimmer Tag Team Championship
The Shimmer Tag Team Championship was a professional wrestling tag team championship contested for exclusively by women's teams in the American promotion Shimmer Women Athletes.[1] It was introduced on October 19, 2008, at Shimmer Volume 21 in Berwyn, Illinois, where Ashley Lane and Nevaeh defeated The Experience (Lexie Fyfe and Malia Hosaka) in the finals of a six-team gauntlet match to become the inaugural champions.[2][1] The title remained active until Shimmer's closure, announced on November 1, 2021, following its final event (Volume 120) on October 31, 2021, at which point it was deactivated, with Team Sea Stars (Ashley Vox and Delmi Exo) as the final champions, who won the belts on November 2, 2019, and held them until deactivation.[3][1][4] Shimmer Women Athletes, founded on November 6, 2005, by promoter Dave Prazak and wrestler Allison Danger, emerged from a successful all-women's event called Volcano Girls under the IWA Mid-South banner in 2004, aiming to showcase high-quality women's wrestling through taped events released on DVD.[5] The promotion quickly established itself as a cornerstone of independent women's wrestling, producing over 120 volumes of events and forging alliances with organizations like Ring of Honor (ROH), where Shimmer titles, including the tag team belts, were defended to elevate the women's division.[5] The tag team championship complemented the existing Shimmer Championship (introduced in 2007) and later the Heart of Shimmer Championship (2016), forming a structured title system that emphasized teamwork and international talent from North America, Europe, and Japan.[1][6] Over its 13-year run, the Shimmer Tag Team Championship saw 13 different teams hold the titles across 14 reigns, with defenses occurring primarily at Shimmer tapings but occasionally on partner shows like ROH events in the late 2000s and early 2010s.[1][4] Notable reigns include the inaugural one by Ashley Lane and Nevaeh, who held the titles for 196 days; the two combined reigns of the Canadian Ninjas (Portia Perez and Nicole Matthews), totaling 11 defenses; and the record-setting single reign of Kellie Skater and Tomoka Nakagawa (as Global Green Gangsters), who held the belts for 727 days with 13 defenses from 2013 to 2015.[1] These championships highlighted innovative tag team dynamics and helped launch careers of wrestlers who later achieved mainstream success in promotions like WWE and AEW.[5] The Shimmer Tag Team Championship played a pivotal role in the evolution of women's professional wrestling by providing a dedicated platform for tag team competition at a time when such opportunities were scarce, fostering rivalries and skill development that influenced the global industry.[5] Despite Shimmer's closure amid financial challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on live events and DVD sales, the promotion's legacy endures through archived footage and its contributions to talents like Sara Del Rey, MsChif, and international stars such as Meiko Satomura, many of whom credited Shimmer for advancing gender equity in the sport. As of 2025, Shimmer's 20th anniversary has been marked by retrospectives celebrating its influence.[6][5]Overview
Inception
The Shimmer Tag Team Championship was announced and first contested on October 19, 2008, during the taping of Shimmer Volume 21 at the Berwyn Eagles Club in Berwyn, Illinois.[7] The championship was created to provide a dedicated platform for women's tag team wrestling on the independent circuit, complementing the Shimmer Singles Championship by emphasizing team dynamics, strategy, and athleticism in a format that had been underrepresented in women's promotions.[6] To determine the inaugural champions, Shimmer organized a six-team gauntlet match, with participating duos including The Experience (Lexie Fyfe and Malia Hosaka), Ashley Lane and Nevaeh, the Canadian Ninjas (Portia Perez and Nicole Matthews), LuFisto and Jennifer Blake, the International Home Wrecking Crew (Rain and Jetta), and the Australian Pink Ladies (Madison Eagles and Jessie McKay).[8][9] Ashley Lane and Nevaeh—also known as Rayne and Nevaeh—won the match by last eliminating The Experience in the final, securing the titles with a combination of an STO and a Yakuza kick.[7][9] Their initial reign lasted 196 days, ending on May 3, 2009, during the taping of Shimmer Volume 26 in Berwyn, Illinois.[9]Belt Design and Rules
The Shimmer Tag Team Championship belts were custom-made by the same designer responsible for the Shimmer Singles Championship, Rico Mann, and crafted by renowned belt maker Reggie Parks, known as the "King of Belts" for his work on titles in promotions like New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.[10] The design consists of gold-plated center and side plates, with the main plate inscribed "Shimmer Tag Team Champions" and the side plates engraved with the names of the reigning team duo, all mounted on a blue leather strap.[10] In 2013, during the reign of the Global Green Gangsters (Kellie Skater and Tomoka Nakagawa), the belts underwent minor modifications, incorporating green accents to align with the champions' thematic color scheme. Defenses of the championship follow standard professional wrestling tag team match stipulations, requiring one member of the challenging team to legally pin or submit one member of the defending team for a title change, unless event-specific variations such as no count-outs or disqualifications are announced. The belts weigh approximately 10 pounds each and are presented to new champions immediately following successful challenges at live events. Prior to 2014, the titles were also defended on partner promotions including Ring of Honor, where Shimmer championships received national recognition.[6]Historical Development
Early Establishment (2008–2012)
The Shimmer Tag Team Championship's early years were marked by rapid title changes that underscored the division's competitive intensity, beginning with the second reign captured by the Canadian NINJAs (Nicole Matthews and Portia Perez) on May 3, 2009, at Shimmer Volume 26 in Berwyn, Illinois, where they defeated the inaugural champions Ashley Lane and Nevaeh.[11] This victory initiated a dominant 692-day reign, the longest in the title's history up to that point, during which the Canadian NINJAs successfully defended the belts multiple times against prominent teams, including Daizee Haze and Tomoka Nakagawa, solidifying their status as early pillars of the division.[12] These defenses primarily occurred at Shimmer's recurring tapings in Berwyn, Illinois, contributing to the championship's growing prominence within the promotion's all-women's roster.[7] The third and fourth reigns were notably brief, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the early competition. On March 26, 2011, at Shimmer Volume 37, the Seven Star Sisters (Hiroyo Matsumoto and Misaki Ohata) dethroned the Canadian NINJAs, only to lose the titles the following day on March 27, 2011, at Volume 40 to Daizee Haze and Tomoka Nakagawa, resulting in a one-day reign for the Japanese duo.[11] Haze and Nakagawa then held the championship for 188 days, mounting defenses that further elevated the tag division's profile before dropping the belts on October 1, 2011, at Volume 41.[12] This short tenure exemplified the high-stakes environment of Shimmer's early tapings, where challengers frequently capitalized on momentum from prior events. The fifth reign introduced an international element, as Ayako Hamada and Ayumi Kurihara, both from Japan, captured the titles from Haze and Nakagawa on October 1, 2011, at Volume 41, marking the first time non-American wrestlers held the belts.[11] Their 169-day run included defenses that showcased technical prowess and cross-cultural appeal, ending on March 18, 2012, amid a period of transition for the division.[7] Overall, the 2008–2012 era saw five total reigns, with the introduction of innovative formats like four-corners elimination matches—first prominently featured in the title change involving Hamada and Kurihara—adding variety to the defenses and helping establish the championship as a cornerstone of Shimmer's programming.[12] The contrast between the Canadian NINJAs' prolonged dominance and the subsequent short reigns emphasized the division's evolving competitiveness, laying the groundwork for broader recognition.Peak Period and International Defenses (2013–2017)
The period from 2013 to 2017 marked the zenith of the SHIMMER Tag Team Championship's prominence, characterized by extended reigns that showcased the division's depth and growing international appeal. Following the foundational years, the titles saw champions who defended them frequently across SHIMMER events, partner promotions, and overseas tours, elevating the belts' status within women's wrestling. This era featured innovative match types, cross-promotional collaborations, and high-stakes feuds that drew larger audiences and highlighted technical prowess alongside hardcore elements.[13][1] Although the sixth reign began in late 2012, it transitioned into this peak phase with The Queens of Winning—Courtney Rush and Sara Del Rey—capturing the titles on March 18, 2012, during SHIMMER Volume 48 in a four-corners elimination match against Regeneration X (Allison Danger and Leva Bates), Ayako Hamada and Ayumi Kurihara, and The Canadian NINJAs (Nicole Matthews and Portia Perez). Their 111-day reign emphasized veteran teamwork and ended on July 7, 2012, at NCW Femmes Fatales IX in Montreal, where they lost to The Canadian NINJAs in their second reign. The Canadian NINJAs held the championships for 281 days, mounting several defenses that solidified their dominance, including victories over emerging teams like Kellie Skater and Tomoka Nakagawa.[13][1] The eighth reign epitomized the era's longevity and intensity, as the Global Green Gangsters (Kellie Skater and Tomoka Nakagawa) defeated The Canadian NINJAs on April 14, 2013, at SHIMMER Volume 57 in Berwyn, Illinois. Their record-breaking 727-day tenure, the longest single reign in the title's history, included approximately 15 defenses across various stipulations, such as no-disqualification matches against teams like The Kimber Bombs (Cherry Bomb and Kimber Lee) and Portia Perez and Nicole Matthews. This run featured notable feuds with joshi imports, underscoring the division's global flavor, and peaked with over 20 combined defenses across the period's major reigns. The partnership with Ring of Honor facilitated several defenses at ROH events until the collaboration concluded in late 2014, broadening the titles' exposure.[13][1][14] International expansion reached a highlight during the 2014 Joshi 4 Hope tour in Japan, where the Global Green Gangsters defended against Evie and Madison Eagles, blending SHIMMER's style with joshi traditions and attracting international acclaim. The ninth reign followed on April 11, 2015, at SHIMMER Volume 72, when The Kimber Bombs upset the Global Green Gangsters in a two-out-of-three falls match, embarking on a 442-day run marked by defenses against rivals like Team Slap Happy (Evie and Heidi Lovelace). This period maintained momentum with feuds emphasizing high-flying and submission techniques. The tenth reign saw Team Slap Happy claim the titles on June 26, 2016, at SHIMMER Volume 84, holding them for 140 days with defenses including a fatal four-way at Volume 85. Finally, Mount Tessa (Tessa Blanchard and Vanessa Kraven) won the championships on November 13, 2016, at SHIMMER Volume 89, extending their 363-day reign through multiple defenses against teams like Mia Yim and Kay Lee Ray, further cementing the era's legacy of sustained activity and cross-cultural rivalries.[13][1][14]Final Reigns and Deactivation (2018–2021)
The final active period of the Shimmer Tag Team Championship began with the conclusion of the twelfth reign held by the Totally Tubular Tag Team (Delilah Doom and Leva Bates), who lost the titles after 344 days as champions.[15] On October 21, 2018, at Shimmer Volume 107 in Berwyn, Illinois, Cheerleader Melissa and Mercedes Martinez captured the championships in a four-way elimination tag team match, defeating the Totally Tubular Tag Team (c), the Blue Nation (Charli Evans and Jessica Troy), and the Killer Death Machines (Jessicka Havok and Nevaeh).[16] This victory marked the thirteenth reign for the titles, with Melissa and Martinez holding them for 377 days until November 2, 2019.[17] During their tenure, they made several defenses, including successful outings against the Team Sea Stars (Ashley Vox and Delmi Exo) at Volume 109 and the World Wonder Ring Stardom representatives DASH Chisako and Hiroyo Matsumoto at Volume 111, showcasing the promotion's continued emphasis on international competition despite a gradual slowdown in events.[1] On November 2, 2019, at Shimmer Volume 115 in Berwyn, Illinois, the Team Sea Stars (Ashley Vox and Delmi Exo) ended the Killer Death Machines' reign by defeating Melissa and Martinez in a standard tag team match, beginning the fourteenth and final championship reign.[18] The Sea Stars' 730-day reign, the longest in the title's history, was characterized by a series of defenses amid the promotion's challenges, starting with retentions against the Blue Nation at Volume 116 and the Bird and the Bee (Solo Darling and Willow Nightingale) at Volume 117, both taped on November 3, 2019.[19][20] As the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted live events in 2020, Shimmer reduced its taping schedule significantly, with Volumes 118 through 120 recorded in limited-capacity settings; the Sea Stars retained their titles against Allysin Kay and Marti Belle at Volume 118 (taped October 11, 2020), Kayla Kassidy and Sierra at Volume 119, and Blonde Force Trauma (Heather Monroe and Ray Lyn) at Volume 120, the latter two taped on October 31, 2021.[21][22][23] These defenses highlighted the duo's resilience, though the scarcity of shows—down from multiple annual tapings to just a handful—reflected broader operational strains on the promotion.[5] The championships were deactivated on November 1, 2021, without a formal vacancy announcement, as Shimmer Women Athletes entered an indefinite hiatus due to financial difficulties exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on live events and attendance.[6] The Team Sea Stars remained the final recognized holders, retiring the belts alongside the promotion's overall cessation of activities after the October 31, 2021, tapings.[24] This deactivation coincided with significant roster dispersal, as many Shimmer talents, including former champions like Martinez and members of the Blue Nation, transitioned to major promotions such as All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and WWE, contributing to the effective end of Shimmer's dedicated tag team division amid the company's struggles.[25] The move underscored the promotion's legacy in elevating women's tag team wrestling while marking a poignant close to its most active era.[6]Championship Records
