Xeka
Xeka, born Miguel Ângelo da Silva Rocha on 10 November 1994 in Paredes, Portugal, is a professional footballer who plays as a central midfielder for Primeira Liga club G.D. Estoril Praia.[1] Standing at 1.85 meters tall and capable of playing with both feet, he is known for his defensive solidity and ball-winning abilities in midfield.[1] Xeka began his youth career at F.C. Paços de Ferreira in 2003 before joining S.C. Braga's academy in 2007.[1] He made his professional debut with Braga's reserve team in the 2013–14 season and was loaned to S.C. Covilhã in the Liga Portugal 2 for the 2014–15 and 2015–16 campaigns, where he accumulated 67 appearances and 2 goals.[2] Returning to Braga in 2016, he featured for the B team and made his first-team debut in the Primeira Liga during the 2016–17 season, appearing in 10 matches without scoring.[3] In January 2017, Xeka transferred to Lille OSC in Ligue 1 for a reported fee of €1 million, but was immediately loaned back to Braga until the end of the season. He then joined Dijon FCO on loan for the 2017–18 Ligue 1 season, making 30 appearances and scoring 2 goals.[2] Returning to Lille in 2018, he became a regular starter, contributing to the club's Ligue 1 title win in the 2020–21 season with 33 league appearances and 1 goal, helping end Paris Saint-Germain's streak of dominance.[4][5] During his full stint at Lille from 2018 to 2022, he amassed 114 Ligue 1 appearances, 7 goals, and 4 assists, while also featuring in European competitions including the UEFA Champions League (10 appearances) and Europa League (6 appearances).[4] In July 2022, Xeka signed a three-year contract with Ligue 1 rivals Stade Rennais for €2.5 million, where he played 25 matches across all competitions from 2022 to 2023, scoring 1 goal.[1] After a brief spell with Al-Sadd SC in Qatar in May 2024, during which he made no appearances, he returned to Portugal, joining Estoril Praia on 15 August 2024 on a free transfer with a contract until June 2028, later extended in May 2025.[1] As of November 2025, he has made 25 appearances in the Primeira Liga for Estoril since joining, contributing 1 goal and 2 assists.[2][6] On the international stage, Xeka earned a single cap for Portugal's under-20 team in a 2–0 friendly victory over Slovakia U21 on 5 February 2014, but has not represented the senior national team.[7]Early life
Birth and family
Miguel Ângelo da Silva Rocha, professionally known as Xeka, was born on 10 November 1994 in Rebordosa, a civil parish in the municipality of Paredes, northern Portugal.[8][9] He measures 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in) in height.[10] Xeka received his nickname from his grandfather during childhood, inheriting it as a family moniker tied to his early years in Rebordosa.[11] His family resided in the Rebordosa area, where he spent his early upbringing amid the local community.[11]Youth development
Xeka began his involvement in organized youth football at the age of nine with FC Paços de Ferreira, joining their academy in 2003 and remaining there until 2007. During this initial period, he honed his basic skills in a local Portuguese environment conducive to early talent development.[10] In 2007, he transferred to Gondomar SC, where he progressed through various age-group teams from under-15 to under-19 levels between 2007 and 2011, building a foundation in competitive youth matches within Portugal's regional leagues. This stint allowed him to adapt to more structured training regimens and team dynamics.[12] At age 17, Xeka moved abroad to join Valencia CF's youth academy for the 2011/12 season, experiencing Spanish football's technical emphasis and high-intensity youth setup. Following this one-year exposure, he returned to Portugal in 2012 to play for Paços de Ferreira's under-19 team during the 2012/13 campaign. In 2013, he entered SC Braga's youth system, continuing his progression in a professional club's academy environment.[13][12][14] Throughout these formative years across multiple clubs, Xeka established himself as a central midfielder, focusing on attributes like ball control, vision, and positional awareness that would define his playing style.[10]Club career
Braga
Xeka joined S.C. Braga's youth academy in 2007 after starting at F.C. Paços de Ferreira. He progressed to the reserve team, making his debut for Braga B during the 2013–14 season in the Segunda Liga. Over his time with the reserves from the 2013–14 to 2016–17 campaigns, Xeka accumulated 28 appearances and scored 2 goals, demonstrating his potential as a central midfielder in competitive second-tier matches.[1] To gain further experience, Xeka was loaned to S.C. Covilhã from 2014 to 2016, where he featured prominently in the Segunda Liga. During this two-year spell, he made 39 appearances without scoring. The loan period honed his defensive and transitional skills in a professional environment, preparing him for higher-level opportunities upon his return to Braga. Upon returning to Braga in the summer of 2016, Xeka earned his first-team debut in the Primeira Liga on 24 October 2016 against G.D. Chaves, starting in central midfield during a 1–0 victory.[15] Despite this breakthrough, his opportunities remained limited amid competition from established players; he recorded 11 league appearances that season, totaling 18 senior outings across all competitions with 1 assist but no goals.[16]Lille
On 31 January 2017, Xeka signed for Lille OSC on a four-and-a-half-year contract for a €1 million fee, but was immediately loaned back to Braga until the end of the 2016–17 season. During the loan back, he made 11 league appearances and scored 1 goal for Braga. He joined Lille full-time in summer 2017. Over his tenure at the club from 2017 to 2022 (excluding a subsequent loan to Dijon FCO), Xeka accumulated 101 appearances across all competitions, contributing 6 goals.[17] His time at Lille included a loan spell at Dijon during the 2017–18 season as part of his development under the club's management.[18] The 2020–21 season marked Xeka's most prominent contribution, as he featured in 27 Ligue 1 matches and scored 2 goals, helping Lille clinch the league title—their first since 2011—on the final day with a 2–1 win over Angers SCO.[19] Following this success, Lille defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1–0 in the 2021 Trophée des Champions, with Xeka scoring the decisive long-range goal in the 44th minute.[5] Xeka's contract with Lille expired at the end of the 2021–22 season, and on 20 May 2022, the club announced his departure as a free agent.[20]Loan to Dijon
In August 2017, Xeka joined Dijon FCO on a season-long loan from Lille OSC ahead of the 2017–18 Ligue 1 campaign.[12] During the spell, he featured in 17 league appearances, netting 2 goals, while serving as a rotational central midfielder in a squad tipped for a survival fight following their narrow escape from the drop the prior year.[21][22] Dijon ultimately secured mid-table safety with an 11th-place finish, but Xeka's contributions were limited amid the team's inconsistent form. He returned to Lille upon the loan's expiration in summer 2018.[20]Rennes
On 21 September 2022, free agent Xeka signed a two-year contract with Stade Rennais until June 2024.[23][24] The move came amid Rennes' need for midfield reinforcement after an injury to Baptiste Santamaria, allowing Xeka to return to French football.[23] During the 2022–23 season, Xeka made 8 appearances across all competitions for Rennes, debuting in a Ligue 1 match against Nantes on 9 October 2022.[25] His involvement was limited by an ankle injury sustained in early 2023, which required surgery on 16 January 2023, sidelining him for the remainder of the campaign.[26] Xeka's tenure at Rennes concluded with a mutual contract termination on 9 August 2023, after less than a year with the club, as both parties agreed to part ways ahead of the new season.[26][27]Al-Sadd
On 1 May 2024, following the expiration of his contract with Rennes, Xeka joined Al-Sadd SC of the Qatar Stars League on a free transfer and short-term contract, primarily to fill the void left by the season-ending injury to midfielder Guilherme Torres.[28][29][3] Xeka's period with Al-Sadd proved inactive, as he recorded no competitive appearances across any competitions during his four-month tenure.[30][31] He departed the club in August 2024 after less than a full season, citing a lack of playing opportunities as the key factor in his exit.[32][3]Estoril
On 15 August 2024, Xeka returned to Portuguese football by joining G.D. Estoril Praia on a free transfer from Al-Sadd, signing a contract until 30 June 2028.[33] This move marked his re-entry into the Primeira Liga after several years abroad, allowing him to contribute to Estoril's midfield in their bid for mid-table stability. During the 2024–25 Primeira Liga season, Xeka made 14 appearances, scoring 1 goal and recording 1 assist while accumulating 946 minutes on the pitch.[34] His contributions helped Estoril maintain a competitive edge in central areas, with notable performances in defensive transitions and ball distribution. As of November 2025, Xeka continues to serve as a central midfielder for Estoril in the ongoing 2025–26 campaign, leveraging his experience to support the team's tactical setup under manager Vasco Seabra.[1]International career
Youth international career
Xeka's youth international career with Portugal was limited to a single appearance at the under-20 level. He made his debut on 5 February 2014, coming on as a substitute for 10 minutes as a defensive midfielder in a 2–0 friendly victory over Slovakia's under-21 team in Marinha Grande.[35] This cap occurred during his time in S.C. Braga's youth setup, where he was gaining experience in senior-level competitions with the club's B team. Xeka did not score in the match and received no further call-ups to any Portuguese youth national teams.[35]Senior international career
Xeka has not made any senior international appearances for the Portugal national team as of November 2025.[35] Despite accumulating over 200 professional club matches across leagues in Portugal, France, and Qatar, he has received no call-ups to senior squads under managers including Roberto Martínez.[35] The central midfield position remains highly competitive for Portugal, with established players such as Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, and Bernardo Silva consistently selected for recent World Cup qualifiers and Nations League matches.[36]Playing style
Role on the pitch
Xeka primarily operates as a central midfielder (CM) or defensive midfielder (DM), often deployed in the heart of the midfield to maintain structure and control.[10] As a defensively minded holding player, he focuses on ball-winning through tackles and interceptions while shielding the defense by breaking up opposition attacks and distributing from deep positions.[37] Xeka is versatile with both feet, allowing him to execute passes and challenges effectively regardless of his positioning on the pitch.[10] At Estoril, he wears jersey number 88, reflecting his personal branding.[38] Standing at 1.85 m, Xeka leverages his height advantage in aerial duels, contributing to set-piece defending and headers during transitions.[10]Influences and attributes
Xeka has cited German midfielder Toni Kroos as a primary influence on his playing style since becoming a professional, particularly admiring Kroos's exceptional vision and precise passing abilities.[39] He has described Kroos as his favorite player and an idol, frequently studying his games to emulate his intelligence in positioning, decision-making, and execution on the ball.[39] Key strengths in Xeka's game include his proficiency in long-range shooting, physical robustness that aids in duels and aerial challenges, and his effectiveness as an indirect threat from set pieces.[40] Analyses of his performances highlight these attributes as central to his contributions in midfield, with no significant weaknesses identified in comprehensive player evaluations.[40] Throughout his career, Xeka has evolved from a predominantly defensive midfielder into a more complete central figure, capable of both shielding the backline and contributing offensively, as noted upon his transfer to Rennes where he was praised for his all-around capabilities.[41] This development builds on his foundational role as a central midfielder, allowing greater versatility in tactical setups.[41]Career statistics
