AEW World Trios Championship
The AEW World Trios Championship is a professional wrestling world championship contested by teams of three male wrestlers within All Elite Wrestling (AEW), one of the promotion's primary active titles alongside the AEW World Championship and AEW Women's World Championship.[1] It was officially announced on July 27, 2022, during an episode of AEW Dynamite: Fight for the Fallen, with the inaugural champions to be determined via a multi-team tournament culminating at the All Out pay-per-view event.[2] The first champions, The Elite (Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson, and Nick Jackson), won the title on September 4, 2022, by defeating Hangman Page, Alex Reynolds, and John Silver of the Dark Order in the tournament final.[1] Since its inception, the championship has been defended in high-profile matches across AEW's weekly shows (Dynamite and Collision) and pay-per-view events, emphasizing fast-paced, multi-man action and faction-based storytelling central to the promotion's style.[3] As of November 15, 2025, the title has seen 9 distinct team reigns, with notable winners including Death Triangle (Pac, Penta El Zero Miedo, and Rey Fénix) in the second reign and The Acclaimed (Anthony Bowens, Max Caster, and Billy Gunn) as a mixed veteran-rookie unit.[4] The belts feature a sleek black leather design with gold plates.[3] The current champions are The Opps (Samoa Joe, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Katsuyori Shibata), who captured the titles in their first reign as a team on April 16, 2025, at the AEW Dynamite: Spring Break-Thru event by defeating the Death Riders (Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, and Wheeler Yuta).[5] They successfully defended the championship on November 5, 2025, against Hangman Page, HOOK, and Eddie Kingston in the main event of AEW Dynamite, solidifying their status amid ongoing feuds involving AEW's top heavyweights.[6]History
Announcement and Creation
On July 27, 2022, during the "Fight for the Fallen" episode of AEW Dynamite, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) President Tony Khan officially announced the creation of the AEW World Trios Championship, expanding the promotion's tag team division to include three-person teams known as trios.[7] This move aimed to elevate multi-man matches and foster deeper storytelling opportunities involving factions and alliances within AEW's roster.[8] The championship drew inspiration from established trios formats in other promotions, particularly New Japan Pro-Wrestling's NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship and the longstanding traditions of trios wrestling in Mexican lucha libre, which emphasize high-flying teamwork and dramatic rivalries.[9] Khan had reportedly commissioned the physical belts well in advance, as early as months prior to the public reveal, signaling long-term planning to integrate trios competition into AEW's core programming.[8] The purpose was to provide a dedicated title for three-wrestler units, allowing for more dynamic booking of group dynamics and cross-promotional potential with international partners.[10] The championship was declared officially active on August 10, 2022, coinciding with the reveal of the inaugural tournament bracket on AEW Dynamite, marking the start of the competition to crown the first champions at the All Out pay-per-view event later that month.[11] Initial rules stipulated that contending teams must consist exclusively of three wrestlers under full-time AEW contracts, with no provisions for interim champions; however, substitutions were permitted in the event of injury, subject to approval by AEW's general manager.[12] This structure ensured stability while accommodating the physical demands of trios matches.Inaugural Tournament
The inaugural tournament for the AEW World Trios Championship was an eight-team single-elimination bracket held across episodes of AEW Dynamite and AEW Rampage from August 17 to September 2, 2022, with the final match occurring at the All Out pay-per-view event on September 4, 2022, at the Now Arena in Chicago, Illinois.[13] The tournament involved 16 wrestlers from diverse factions, including international alliances and homegrown stables, demonstrating the promotion's commitment to elevating trios wrestling as a core division.[14] In the quarterfinals, The Elite (Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson, and Nick Jackson) defeated La Faccion Ingobernable (Andrade El Idolo, RUSH, and Dragon Lee) on the August 17 episode of Dynamite, with Omega securing the pinfall after a series of signature moves including the V-Trigger.[15] Death Triangle (Pac, Penta El Zero M, and Rey Fénix) advanced by beating United Empire (Will Ospreay, Kyle Fletcher, and Mark Davis) on the August 24 Dynamite, highlighted by Pac's German suplex bridge on Ospreay for the victory.[16] On the Rampage side, Best Friends (Chuck Taylor, Trent Beretta, and Orange Cassidy) overcame The Trustbusters (Ari Daivari, Sonny Kiss, and EEZ-E) on August 19, using their signature unorthodox style to isolate and submit the opponents.[17] The Dark Order (Alex Reynolds, John Silver, and -10) progressed by defeating House of Black (Malakai Black, Brody King, and Buddy Matthews) on the August 26 Rampage, with Silver pinning Matthews after a chaotic brawl.[18] The semifinals featured intense clashes, with The Elite edging out Death Triangle on the August 31 Dynamite in a match praised for its athleticism and near-falls, as Omega countered a Black Arrow attempt to hit a One-Winged Angel for the win.[19] In the other semifinal on the September 2 Rampage, The Dark Order advanced over Best Friends, with Hangman Adam Page replacing the injured -10, and John Silver securing the victory by rolling up Chuck Taylor.[20][21] The final at All Out pitted The Elite against Page and The Dark Order in a 21-minute thriller, where tensions from Page's history with the Bucks boiled over; Omega ultimately pinned John Silver with a V-Trigger knee strike after Page accidentally hit Silver with a Buckshot Lariat, crowning The Elite as the first champions.[13][14][22] However, following a backstage altercation at All Out involving the Elite, the titles were vacated on the September 7 episode of Dynamite without a defense. The tournament's blend of high-stakes action and faction rivalries proved the trios division's potential, drawing strong fan engagement and setting a foundation for future storylines in AEW.[22]Belt Design
Standard Design
The standard AEW World Trios Championship belt was crafted by belt maker Ron Edwardsen of Red Leather Belts in collaboration with AEW's creative team.[23][24] The belt's main plate is gold-plated zinc alloy and bears the inscription "AEW World Trios Champions" above three interconnected world globes that symbolize the unity of the reigning trio, with the globes flanked by expansive eagle wings and laurel wreaths for a majestic appearance.[25] The design incorporates 16 hand-set faux jewels for added embellishment, while the side plates are removable to allow for custom engravings of the individual wrestlers' names during each team's reign. The overall structure includes five gold plates mounted on a black leather strap, emphasizing prestige and symmetry suitable for three-person teams. Measuring approximately 12 inches in height and weighing around 10 pounds, the belt uses durable zinc alloy construction to balance ornate aesthetics with practicality for in-ring use.[26] The standard design has remained consistent since its introduction, with only the side plate engravings updated to reflect current champions; it was first presented to the inaugural winners, The Elite (Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson, and Nick Jackson), following their victory in the tournament final at All Out on September 4, 2022.[1]Custom Title Plates
AEW allows reigning World Trios Champions to use custom side plates for their belts, incorporating elements that reflect their unique identity and faction aesthetics.[27] These customizations are designed in collaboration with AEW's art department and are typically installed and unveiled during televised episodes of Dynamite or Collision to heighten the presentation. Custom plates are returned to the promotion upon losing the titles.[23] Notable examples include The Acclaimed's (Max Caster, Anthony Bowens, and Billy Gunn) microphone icons and "Platinum" engravings on their plates during their reign in 2022–2023, aligning with their hip-hop inspired persona and signature scissoring gesture, complemented by a bright pink strap.[28] Similarly, House of Black (Malakai Black, Brody King, and Buddy Matthews) opted for occult symbols and a monochromatic silver-and-black scheme with faction logos on the side plates during their reign in 2023, evoking their gothic, supernatural theme over the standard gold base.[28] Several distinct sets of custom Trios plates have been produced, including the Death Riders' (Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, and Wheeler Yuta) incorporation of Blackpool Combat Club skull emblems during their 2025 reign, which preceded their loss to The Opps (Samoa Joe, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Katsuyori Shibata).[1] As of November 2025, The Opps have not unveiled custom plates during their ongoing reign.[5] These modifications significantly enhance faction-based storytelling by visually reinforcing group dynamics and rivalries.[29]Reigns and Statistics
