The project was officially announced in January 2008 by producer Ayngaran International, shortly after the blockbuster success of Ajith's Billa (2007), with shooting set to resume later that month following a brief break for personal reasons.[21] Nayanthara was selected as the female lead, playing Mallika, a college professor, leveraging her rising popularity from her role in Billa, where she had already collaborated with Ajith for the first time.
