Body Head Bangerz
Body Head Bangerz is an American Southern hip hop group formed in the early 2000s by former professional boxer and heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr. in Pensacola, Florida.[1] The group functions as the flagship act for Jones's independent record label, Body Head Entertainment, which he founded to promote hip hop artists from the Gulf Coast region.[2][3] Originally comprising core members including rappers Big Perion, Choppa, Giz & Swellz, Magic, and Rated PG, along with frequent guest collaborators such as YoungBloodZ, the ensemble is known for its crunk-influenced sound blending hardcore lyrics with high-energy beats.[2] Note that Magic (Awood Johnson Jr.) died in a car accident in 2013.) Roy Jones Jr. himself contributes as an executive producer and occasional performer, leveraging his celebrity status to bridge boxing and hip hop cultures.[4] The group's music often features themes of street life, partying, and bravado, with notable singles like "Can't Be Touched" and "I Smoke, I Drank" gaining regional airplay in the mid-2000s.[5][6] Body Head Bangerz debuted with the compilation-style album Body Head Bangerz: Volume One on October 26, 2004, released via Body Head Entertainment and distributed by Universal Records.[7][4] The 16-track project, produced primarily by Awood "Magic" Johnson, includes collaborations with artists like Juvenile, Petey Pablo, and B.G., and peaked at number 38 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[4][8] Despite limited mainstream success, the album solidified the group's presence in the Southern rap scene and highlighted Jones's entrepreneurial ventures beyond the ring.[7] The group released several singles and follow-up material in the ensuing years, including a 2015 EP, with activity remaining limited thereafter.[9][10]Formation and background
Origins
Body Head Bangerz was established in 2004 in Pensacola, Florida, as a hip hop collective spearheaded by boxer Roy Jones Jr. to venture into music production and performance.[3][11] The group's initial lineup included Roy Jones Jr., Magic (deceased 2013), Choppa, Snappa, and Bone Crusher, drawing from local talent to form a core ensemble focused on southern-style rap.[12] This formation was motivated in part by Jones's transition from his prominent boxing career, aiming to leverage his fame into the music industry.[11] The early 2000s hip hop scene in Pensacola provided a foundational context for the group, situated in Florida's panhandle amid the rising influence of southern rap. This regional style, characterized by crunk and hardcore elements popularized by labels like No Limit, offered a platform for emerging artists in smaller southern markets to connect with broader trends from cities like Atlanta and New Orleans.[11][13] Pensacola's proximity to these hubs facilitated the infusion of gritty, street-oriented southern influences into the group's sound.[3] Under Body Head Entertainment, an independent label founded by Jones and based in Pensacola, the group was positioned to operate autonomously while distributing through major channels like Universal.[3] This setup allowed for rapid development of the collective, building on Jones's prior solo rap efforts to establish a dedicated outlet for the ensemble's output.[11]Connection to Roy Jones Jr.
Roy Jones Jr. is a retired American professional boxer who achieved legendary status by capturing world championships in four weight divisions, spanning middleweight to heavyweight, during a career that spanned from 1989 to 2018.[14] His accomplishments include holding the IBF middleweight title from 1993 to 1994, the IBF super middleweight title from 1994 to 1996, the WBC light heavyweight title starting in 1997, and the WBA heavyweight title in 2003, making him the first former middleweight champion to win a heavyweight crown since 1906.[15][16] Jones dominated the late 1990s and early 2000s as the pound-for-pound best fighter in boxing, with a record of 66 wins, 10 losses, and 47 knockouts, before transitioning more fully into other ventures as his ring activity waned after key defeats in 2004.[17][18] Jones's interest in music predated his group formation, as he began rapping in the late 1990s and released his debut solo album, Round One: The Album, in 2001, which featured tracks blending hip-hop with themes from his boxing life.[19] By 2004, following the height of his boxing prime and amid a shift toward post-peak career exploration, Jones channeled this passion into hip-hop group leadership, forming Body Head Bangerz as a collective to showcase Southern rap talent.[20] The group was established in his hometown of Pensacola, Florida, reflecting his roots in the region.[3] As the founder and central figure of Body Head Bangerz, Jones acted as executive producer, overseeing the project's creative and production direction, with occasional contributions as a performer.[19] He had established Body Head Entertainment in 1998 as an independent hip-hop label in Pensacola to support his musical ambitions, signing artists and releasing projects under its imprint, which later became the vehicle for the group's output.[21][22] This venture marked Jones's deliberate pivot from the boxing ring to music entrepreneurship, leveraging his fame to promote the ensemble while maintaining artistic control.[23]Members

Debut and early releases
Body Head Bangerz released their debut album, Body Head Bangerz: Volume One, on August 3, 2004, through the independent label Body Head Entertainment, founded by Roy Jones Jr..[29] The project showcased the group's Southern hip hop style, characterized by heavy basslines and club-oriented beats that emphasized party anthems and street narratives. Following initial distribution challenges, the album was re-released on October 26, 2004, via a partnership with Universal Music Group, broadening its reach and incorporating polished production values.[30] The album featured prominent guest appearances from established Southern rap artists, including YoungBloodZ, Juvenile, B.G., Lil' Flip, Petey Pablo, Mike Jones, and Bun B, which helped lend credibility and regional flavor to the group's sound.[29] These collaborations highlighted the group's connections within the Dirty South scene, blending veteran flows with emerging talents to create tracks focused on bravado and lifestyle themes. Early promotion leveraged Roy Jones Jr.'s celebrity status as a boxing champion, positioning the group as an extension of his entrepreneurial ventures and generating buzz through targeted marketing in hip-hop circles.[11] A key promotional boost came from the inclusion of the track "Body Head Anthem" (featuring Mr. Magic and Choppa) on the soundtrack for the video game Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, exposing the music to a wider gaming audience and tying into the era's growing synergy between hip-hop and interactive media.[31] The album's lead single, "I Smoke, I Drank," achieved notable chart success, surprising critics and marking an unexpected commercial entry for the newcomers, peaking at number 81 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.[11] Reception was generally positive but tempered, with RapReviews awarding it a 7 out of 10, praising the musical variety and guest contributions while noting lyrical inconsistencies as a work in progress. The album peaked at number 38 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number 12 on the Top Heatseekers chart.[11]Later activities and EP
Following their 2004 debut album, Body Head Bangerz experienced a period of low activity from 2005 to 2012, coinciding with Roy Jones Jr.'s return to professional boxing, including bouts against Antonio Tarver in 2004 and 2005, and Glen Johnson in 2004. The death of member Mr. Magic (Awood Johnson) occurred on March 1, 2013, in a car accident in Hattiesburg, Mississippi—where he and his wife Chastity were killed, leaving their daughter as the sole survivor.[27][32][33] Despite this loss, the group released the single "Drinks 4 Everybody" in August 2013, marking their first new material in nearly a decade.[34] The group revived in 2015 with the release of the EP Roy Jones Jr. Presents Body Head Bangerz on August 18, distributed independently under the Body Head Bangerz Music label, featuring six tracks that continued their southern hip-hop style.[10] Since 2015, Body Head Bangerz has maintained limited output, including the 2018 single "Yeah" featuring Roy Jones Jr. and SM Bullett, while operating within the independent southern rap scene centered in Pensacola, Florida. As of 2025, no new material has been released.[35]Discography
