Brandon Ryan
Brandon Ryan (born 7 November 1997) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Hawthorn Football Club and the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL).[1] Standing at 200 cm (6 ft 7 in) tall, Ryan was selected by Hawthorn with pick 12 in the 2023 mid-season rookie draft. He made his AFL debut in 2023, playing three games for the club that year.[2][3] Traded to Brisbane at the end of 2023, Ryan played one AFL match for the Lions in 2024 before being delisted in October 2025.[4]Early life and junior career
Upbringing and education
Brandon Ryan was born on 7 November 1997 in Victoria, Australia.[5] He grew up in the coastal town of Barwon Heads on the Bellarine Peninsula, west of Geelong, where he developed an early interest in Australian rules football.[6] Coming from a tight-knit family, Ryan is the cousin of Fremantle Dockers defender Luke Ryan, whose parents have been supportive attendees at Brandon's games.[7] As a late developer, Ryan did not enter the elite talent pathways such as the Geelong Falcons under-18s program, instead focusing on local junior football. He began his playing career with the Barwon Heads Football Netball Club, progressing through their colts and senior sides before transitioning to the Geelong West Giants in the Geelong Football League around age 18, where his performances earned him attention from Victorian Football League (VFL) recruiters.[8] In parallel with his early football pursuits, Ryan balanced work and further education, taking on roles as a labourer while pursuing studies in property. This vocational training reflected his practical approach to career development outside of sport during his non-drafted entry into professional ranks.[7]Local and regional football
Brandon Ryan began his football journey in the local junior ranks at Barwon Heads Football Netball Club on Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula, where he grew up. As a scrawny teenager, he was overlooked by the Geelong Falcons in the elite NAB League talent pathway, instead honing his skills in the community environment of his hometown club.[6][9] Transitioning to senior football, Ryan progressed to the Geelong West Giants in the Geelong Football League (GFL), a prominent regional competition in the area. His performances there, marked by improved physical development and on-field control during his late teens, caught the attention of recruiters and earned him a two-year VFL contract with North Melbourne in 2018. However, injuries prevented him from playing any games during that period. He then took a hiatus from organized football in 2020 amid the COVID-19 disruptions, before returning in 2021.[6][8][10] Ryan returned to local football in 2021 with the Maribyrnong Park Lions in Melbourne's Essendon District Football League (EDFL), a suburban amateur competition. In his comeback season, he kicked 22 goals in just eight games, demonstrating strong marking and forward pressure. He built on this in 2022, booting 38 goals across 17 matches, which highlighted his growth as a key-position player and paved the way for his re-entry into higher-level football. These regional stints underscored Ryan's resilience and unorthodox path outside traditional development channels.[8][11]Professional career
VFL development
Ryan entered the Victorian Football League (VFL) in 2023 after earning a rookie list spot with the Northern Bullants, having impressed in the Geelong Football League (GFL) with the Geelong West Giants the previous year.[8] At 25 years old and standing 200 cm tall, he transitioned to the role of key forward, leveraging his athleticism and marking ability to make an immediate impact.[6] In his seven games for the Bullants early in the 2023 season, Ryan booted 18 goals and 10 behinds, establishing himself as the team's primary target inside 50.[12] He averaged 14 disposals and five marks per game, demonstrating strong contested possessions and aerial strength that highlighted his potential as a tall forward.[12] A standout performance came in round 5, where his goal-scoring prowess was featured in the official VFL Showreel, further elevating his profile among AFL recruiters.[13] Ryan's form with the Bullants positioned him as a draft prospect, culminating in his selection by Hawthorn with pick 12 in the 2023 AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft on May 31.[10] Following the draft, he joined Hawthorn's VFL affiliate, the Box Hill Hawks, where he played four games and continued his scoring touch, contributing to a combined 26 goals across 11 VFL matches that season.[14] His overall VFL output—averaging 13.4 disposals, 8.2 contested possessions, 5.9 marks, and 2.3 tackles—earned him a spot in the 2023 Smithy's VFL Team of the Year.[15] This recognition underscored his rapid development from regional football to state-league prominence, paving the way for his AFL debut later in 2023.[16]Hawthorn Football Club
Brandon Ryan was selected by Hawthorn with pick 12 in the 2023 AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft, having impressed recruiters with his performances for the Northern Bullants in the Victorian Football League (VFL).[17] Standing at 200 cm and known for his marking ability as a key-position forward, the 25-year-old from Barwon Heads transitioned rapidly from local football to the AFL list, catching the eye of Hawthorn's talent identification team through his dominance in the VFL.[17] Ryan made his AFL debut in round 20 of the 2023 season against St Kilda, where he kicked one goal in Hawthorn's 66-point victory.[3] He followed this up with a standout performance in round 21 against Collingwood, booting three goals, recording nine disposals and five marks in a thrilling win attended by over 62,000 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.[17] Across his three AFL games for the season, Ryan averaged six disposals and 3.3 marks per match, contributing four goals overall while adapting to the professional level without a full pre-season.[3] Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell praised Ryan's unique physical presence, noting, "We’ve seen some things from you that just makes you think ‘wow’. There is something about that big, awkward guy that’s quite a tough match-up."[17] Ryan's time at Hawthorn was brief, as he was traded to the Brisbane Lions on October 18, 2023, in a deal that facilitated Jack Gunston's return to the Hawks; this made Ryan the first mid-season draftee to be traded between clubs.[18] During his stint, he also played VFL matches for Hawthorn's affiliate, the Box Hill Hawks, further honing his skills as an emerging tall forward.[17]Brisbane Lions
Brandon Ryan was traded to the Brisbane Lions from Hawthorn during the 2023 AFL Trade Period, arriving as part of a deal that saw forward Jack Gunston move to Hawthorn in exchange for Ryan and a future third-round draft pick.[11] At 200 cm tall, Ryan was recruited for his athleticism and marking ability as a key-position forward, bringing prior VFL experience from Box Hill and the Northern Bullants.[14] Ryan made his AFL debut for the Lions in Round 11 of the 2024 season against Hawthorn at Marvel Stadium on May 26, entering as the substitute and scoring one goal in a 25-point loss.[3] This marked his fourth career AFL appearance overall, having previously played three games for Hawthorn in 2023 where he kicked three goals. Limited opportunities at senior level followed, with Ryan spending much of his tenure in the VFL affiliate, the Brisbane Lions reserves, where he featured in 16 matches across 2024, averaging 13.0 disposals and 4.7 marks per game while contributing 26 goals.[19] In the 2025 season, Ryan remained on Brisbane's list but did not break into the AFL side, instead continuing in the VFL with consistent performances as a tall forward. His time at the club emphasized development in aerial contests and forward pressure, though injuries and competition for key forward spots limited his senior exposure. On October 2, 2025, following Brisbane's premiership-winning campaign, Ryan was delisted alongside Darcy Craven, ending his two-year stint with the Lions without further AFL games. As of November 2025, Ryan has not signed with another AFL club and is eligible for the rookie draft or delisted free agency.[20][21][22]Playing statistics and style
