Chad Gable
Chad Gable (born March 8, 1986) is an American professional wrestler signed to WWE, where he competes on the Raw brand as the leader of the American Made stable.[1][2] A former Olympic amateur wrestler, Gable transitioned to professional wrestling in 2013 after competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, and he has since become a multi-time tag team champion known for his technical prowess and signature moves like the Chaos Theory and Ankle Lock.[3][1][2] Gable, from Minneapolis, Minnesota, began his wrestling journey in high school at St. Michael-Albertville High School, where he won a state championship, before continuing at Northern Michigan University.[1] His amateur career peaked with a victory in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Greco-Roman wrestling, leading to his Olympic appearance where he advanced in the qualification rounds but did not medal.[1][3] Trained rigorously for eight years under Olympic silver medalist Brandon Paulson, Gable's Olympic preparation included twice-daily sessions that honed his discipline and mat skills, experiences he later credited for easing his entry into WWE's demanding Performance Center regimen.[3] Upon signing with WWE in 2013, Gable debuted in NXT as part of the American Alpha tag team with Jason Jordan, capturing the NXT Tag Team Championship in 2016.[2][1] The duo moved to the main roster later that year, winning the Raw Tag Team Championship and later the SmackDown Tag Team Championship after Jordan's injury led to teaming with Shelton Benjamin.[2][1] Gable's tag team success continued with partnerships alongside Bobby Roode, securing another Raw Tag Team Championship in 2021, and Otis in Alpha Academy, where he added a second Raw Tag Team title in 2023.[1] He also ventured into singles competition, reaching the finals of the 2019 King of the Ring tournament and challenging for the Intercontinental Championship. In 2025, Gable adopted the masked luchador persona El Grande Americano, under which he won the WWE Speed Championship, further diversifying his accolades as a WWE Tag Team Triple Crown Champion.[4] In mid-2024, Gable turned heel following a fallout with Alpha Academy members Otis and Maxxine Dupri, leading him to form the American Made faction with the Creed Brothers and Ivy Nile, emphasizing his "superior" wrestling pedigree.[2] However, in June 2025, Gable suffered a legitimate shoulder injury while portraying El Grande Americano during a storyline attack, undergoing surgery in early July 2025, which has sidelined him from in-ring action.[5] As of November 2025, Gable has begun in-ring training at the WWE Performance Center, with a projected return around December 2025, during which he continues to influence WWE through mentorship, as noted by former stablemate Maxxine Dupri for his insightful match advice.[6][7]Early years
Early life
Charles Edward Betts, better known by his ring name Chad Gable, was born on March 8, 1986, in Saint Michael, Minnesota.[8][9] He grew up in a family that included his parents, Peter Betts and Pamela Gustafson Betts, as well as his younger brother, Parker Betts.[9][10] From a young age, Betts developed a strong interest in professional wrestling, becoming a devoted fan by the time he was six years old during the 1990s.[11] He immersed himself in the era's wrestling culture by collecting and trading VHS tapes of matches, participating in early online message boards, and identifying as a "real wrestling geek."[11] This passion was further fueled by Minnesota's rich wrestling heritage, a state known for its strong amateur and professional traditions that provided local inspiration and access to the sport.[12][13] During his high school years at St. Michael-Albertville High School, Betts engaged in athletic pursuits that honed his competitive drive, with a growing focus on wrestling. These early experiences contributed to his physical development and set the stage for his deeper commitment to amateur wrestling.Amateur wrestling career
Charles Betts, known professionally as Chad Gable, began his competitive wrestling career in high school at St. Michael-Albertville High School in Minnesota. As a senior in 2004, he captured the Class AA state championship in the 160-pound weight class, compiling an undefeated 48-1 record for the season.[14] Betts continued his development at Northern Michigan University, where he focused primarily on Greco-Roman wrestling as part of the U.S. Olympic training program rather than traditional folkstyle collegiate competition. He trained rigorously for eight years under Olympic silver medalist Brandon Paulson, which honed his discipline and technical skills.[15] During this period, he drew inspiration from legendary wrestler and coach Dan Gable, after whom he would later name his professional persona. This emphasis on Greco-Roman allowed him to prioritize international-style training over NCAA Division II folkstyle events.[16][17] Betts' international career gained momentum in the late 2000s, marked by consistent performances on the national and global stage. He earned his first senior national title by winning the 2011 U.S. Open in the 84 kg Greco-Roman division. The following year, he secured gold medals at the Dave Schultz Memorial International and the Pan American Championships, both in 84 kg, while also claiming bronze at the Granma Cup in Cuba. These victories propelled him to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, where he defeated Jordan Holm 2-0 in the finals to qualify for the London Olympics.[18][19] At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Betts competed in the men's Greco-Roman 84 kg event, equivalent to the 185-pound class. He advanced from the qualification round with a 7-1 victory over Keitani Graham of the Federated States of Micronesia but was eliminated in the round of 16 by Cuba's Pablo Shorey via a 1-0, 1-0 decision, finishing ninth overall with a 1-1 record. His Olympic performance earned him the 2012 USA Wrestling Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year award, recognizing his contributions to the discipline.[20][21] Following the Olympics, Betts continued limited Greco-Roman competition while transitioning toward professional wrestling opportunities, maintaining his training regimen influenced by Dan Gable's rigorous philosophy of mental toughness and technical precision. His amateur tenure concluded without further major international titles, as he signed with WWE in late 2013.[21]Professional wrestling career
Training and early WWE (2013–2015)
In 2013, following his participation in the 2012 Summer Olympics, Charles Betts—better known by his ring name Chad Gable—impressed WWE officials during a tryout in June, leading to the signing of a developmental contract. He reported to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, in September to begin professional wrestling training.[22] At the Performance Center, Gable focused on transitioning his extensive amateur Greco-Roman wrestling background—marked by national championships and Olympic experience—into the entertainment-oriented style of professional wrestling, honing skills like suplexes, submissions, and chain wrestling while learning to incorporate character work and storytelling. This adaptation period lasted over a year, during which he trained under coaches including Bill DeMott and Joey Mercury to refine his in-ring psychology and athletic presentation.[22][1] Gable made his in-ring debut under the Chad Gable moniker at an NXT house show in Cocoa Beach, Florida, on September 5, 2014, defeating jobber Troy McClain via pinfall. He secured another victory over McClain the following night in Citrus Springs, Florida, showcasing his technical prowess in early non-televised outings. His NXT television debut came on the January 8, 2015, episode, where he competed in a losing effort against established star Tyler Breeze, highlighting his agility but exposing areas for growth in high-stakes matches.[23][24] Throughout late 2014 and early 2015, Gable participated in NXT's developmental tag team scene, including multi-team matches at house shows that served as informal invitational-style showcases for emerging duos. On October 11, 2014, at an NXT live event in Lakeland, Florida, Gable teamed with fellow rookie Jason Jordan in a losing effort to Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady in a four-team tag match, marking one of his initial partnerships and an opportunity to experiment with tandem offense rooted in amateur wrestling fundamentals. These early collaborations emphasized Gable's role as a versatile technician adapting to cooperative dynamics, setting the stage for more structured tag team opportunities.[24][23]American Alpha (2015–2017)
In May 2015, Chad Gable, a recent NXT signee with an Olympic amateur wrestling background, approached Jason Jordan amid Jordan's singles struggles, leading to the formation of the tag team American Alpha.[25] The duo adopted a high-energy, technically proficient style rooted in their amateur experiences, emphasizing suplexes and submissions. Their official television debut occurred on the July 15 episode of NXT, where they defeated Elias Samson and Steve Cutler.[26] American Alpha quickly gained momentum through matches against established teams, including a notable victory over former NXT Tag Team Champions Blake and Murphy on the January 27, 2016, episode of NXT. American Alpha's rapid rise culminated in a championship opportunity after defeating The Vaudevillains and Breezango in qualifying matches. On April 1, 2016, at NXT TakeOver: Dallas, they captured the NXT Tag Team Championship from The Revival in a closely contested match, marking their first title win in WWE.[27] The team defended the titles successfully against The Revival in a rematch on the April 20 episode of NXT and retained them in a two-out-of-three falls bout at NXT TakeOver: London on December 16, 2016. Their reign lasted 68 days before they dropped the belts back to The Revival on June 8, 2016, at NXT TakeOver: The End.[28] Following the 2016 WWE Draft, American Alpha was assigned to the SmackDown brand and made their main roster debut on the August 2 episode, defeating The Vaudevillains in a fast-paced opener that showcased their athleticism.[29] The team participated in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania 33 on April 2, 2017, though neither advanced far in the match.[30] They engaged in a high-profile feud with The Usos throughout early 2017, culminating in American Alpha winning the SmackDown Tag Team Championship from them on December 27, 2016, only to lose it back in a rematch on SmackDown Live. By mid-2017, subtle storyline developments began hinting at the team's potential dissolution, as Jordan transitioned into a prominent singles role on Raw following the Superstar Shake-up, including a narrative tying him to Raw General Manager Kurt Angle as his storyline son.[31] This shift effectively ended American Alpha's run, with Gable remaining on SmackDown to pursue other opportunities.[32]Tag team specialist (2017–2019)
Following the dissolution of American Alpha in early 2017, when partner Jason Jordan transitioned to a singles role on Raw, Chad Gable sought new tag team opportunities on SmackDown, leveraging his amateur wrestling pedigree for technical prowess in the division.[2] In August 2017, Gable paired with veteran Shelton Benjamin, a fellow Olympic alternate, forming a team that debuted with a victory over The Ascension on the August 29 episode of SmackDown LIVE.[33] Their partnership emphasized chain wrestling and suplex variations, drawing comparisons to Benjamin's prior success with Charlie Haas, though it ultimately lacked the same long-term chemistry.[34] The Benjamin-Gable duo quickly ascended the SmackDown tag team ranks, securing a number one contender's spot with a win in a Fatal 4-Way match against Breezango, The Hype Bros, and The Ascension on the October 10, 2017, episode of SmackDown LIVE.[35] They also defeated The Hype Bros at Hell in a Cell on October 8, 2017, and notably triumphed over The New Day and Rusev Day in a triple threat number one contender's match on December 26, 2017, earning a title shot against The Usos.[36][37] Despite strong performances in feuds with top teams like The Usos and The New Day—including competitive fatal 4-way title matches at Clash of Champions in September and December 2017—the pair never captured the SmackDown Tag Team Championship, with The Usos retaining both times.[38] Gable's technical style shone in these bouts, but the team's momentum waned after the April 2018 Superstar Shake-up drafted Gable to Raw without Benjamin, leaving him without a consistent partner and highlighting challenges in sustaining tag team success amid WWE's roster shifts.[39] On Raw, Gable briefly explored other pairings before aligning with Bobby Roode in September 2018, forming a technically oriented team that blended Roode's charisma with Gable's grappling expertise. Their debut victory came over The Ascension on the September 3 episode, followed by a tag team battle royal win on November 12 to become Survivor Series captains, though their team fell in the traditional tag match.[40] The duo's title chase intensified with a non-title upset over Raw Tag Team Champions The Authors of Pain (AOP) on November 19, 2018, setting up their championship victory against AOP on the December 10 episode of Raw, marking Gable's second main roster tag title reign.[41][1] Defending the titles into early 2019, they lost to The Revival on the February 11 episode of Raw after a 63-day reign, but continued feuding in the division with rematch attempts that underscored Gable's role as a reliable mid-card tag specialist amid inconsistent booking.[42] Benjamin later reflected that Gable's talent warranted greater opportunities, noting the 2017-2018 partnership's potential was hindered by mismatched dynamics and WWE's creative decisions.[34]Shorty G (2019–2020)
In October 2019, Chad Gable transitioned to a singles competitor on SmackDown and adopted the "Shorty G" ring name following a victory over Curtis Axel, embracing taunts about his billed height of 5 feet 8 inches as a core character element to portray an underdog persona.[43][44][2] This gimmick shift came after his tag team tenure, positioning Shorty G as a resilient competitor reliant on technical prowess against larger opponents. Shorty G frequently teamed with Mustafa Ali during late 2019, engaging in rivalries with duos such as Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro, where he vied for Intercontinental Championship opportunities but fell short in key encounters.[45] At Survivor Series 2019, Shorty G represented Team SmackDown in a 5-on-5-on-5 elimination match against teams from Raw and NXT, but was eliminated early by Baron Corbin, highlighting his underdog struggles. Into 2020, he entered high-profile feuds with bigger wrestlers like Cesaro, whom he defeated in a singles match on SmackDown in May after an earlier elimination controversy, and Braun Strowman, with whom he shared Team SmackDown duties but often found himself overshadowed in multi-man bouts emphasizing size disparities.[46][47] A notable losing streak ensued against powerhouses such as Sheamus, including defeats at the Royal Rumble Kickoff pre-show and subsequent SmackDown rematches, reinforcing the narrative of perseverance amid physical mismatches.[48][49] The Shorty G gimmick faced significant fan backlash for its perceived diminishment of Gable's athletic credentials, leading to its abrupt end in October 2020 after a squash loss to Lars Sullivan on SmackDown, where the character dramatically "quit" and reverted to the Chad Gable name.[50][51] Gable later reflected on the run as a challenging low point in his career, though it briefly showcased his versatility in singles competition.[52]Alpha Academy (2020–2024)
In late 2020, following a string of undercard losses as Shorty G, Chad Gable reverted to his original ring name and established the Alpha Academy stable on the October 23 episode of SmackDown, positioning himself as a coach drawing from his Olympic wrestling background to mentor promising talent. He immediately recruited Otis as his first student, emphasizing technical refinement and academic discipline to elevate Otis's raw power into a more strategic wrestling style.[53] This formation marked Gable's shift from solo midcard frustration to a leadership role, with early segments featuring instructional vignettes where Gable demonstrated grappling techniques and mat-based strategies to Otis ahead of matches.[54] The stable expanded in December 2021 when the Creed Brothers—Julius and Brutus—joined after departing NXT's Diamond Mine faction, becoming Gable's dedicated pupils and adding amateur wrestling pedigree to the group.[55] Maxxine Dupri was added in July 2022, transitioning from the Maximum Male Models stable to serve as a manager and occasional in-ring participant, bringing a glamorous contrast to the academy's scholarly theme.[56] Under Gable's guidance, Alpha Academy pursued tag team success, culminating in Gable and Otis capturing the Raw Tag Team Championship on the January 10, 2022, episode of Raw by defeating RK-Bro (Randy Orton and Matt Riddle) in a hard-fought contest that highlighted Gable's suplexes and Otis's strength.[57] They defended the titles against teams like The Street Profits and The Usos before losing them back to RK-Bro in a Triple Threat match at WrestleMania 38 on April 3, 2022.[58] Gable's comedic coach persona became a staple, with recurring "lessons" segments involving pop quizzes, endurance tests, and humorous berating of opponents or students, often parodying educational tropes to build crowd engagement—such as challenging RK-Bro to an "Academic Challenge" on the January 24, 2022, Raw.[59] This lighthearted dynamic fueled feuds, notably a 2023 rivalry with Imperium (Gunther, Ludwig Kaiser, and Giovanni Vinci), where Alpha Academy engaged in a series of tag team matches emphasizing respect and supremacy; after splitting a 2-1 series in their favor on Raw episodes in May and August, Gable earned an Intercontinental Championship opportunity against Gunther at Clash at the Castle.[60] The stable's popularity grew through these vignettes and matches, blending athleticism with entertainment. Tensions simmered internally as Gable grew frustrated with perceived underperformances, particularly after his Intercontinental Championship loss to Sami Zayn on the April 15, 2024, Raw, leading to verbal lashings at Otis, Dupri, and later Akira Tozawa, who had joined sporadically in 2023.[61] This culminated in a heel turn on June 17, 2024, episode of Raw, where Gable orchestrated an attack on Otis following a tag team loss at Money in the Bank, citing Otis's failures as the breaking point and expelling him from the academy while aligning the Creeds with his vision.[62] The split dissolved the original face-oriented stable, ending Gable's tenure as its authoritative leader after four years of tag title pursuits and character-driven storylines.American Made (2024–2025)
In mid-2024, following his betrayal by Otis and other members of Alpha Academy, Chad Gable aligned with The Creed Brothers (Julius Creed and Brutus Creed) and Ivy Nile to form the faction American Made on the June 17 episode of Raw, adopting a hyper-patriotic theme centered on American exceptionalism and dominance in WWE. The group quickly established itself as heels, with Gable as the authoritative leader emphasizing national pride through promos and in-ring aggression, positioning American Made as defenders of "true American values" against perceived rivals. American Made engaged in intense feuds on Raw, beginning with a heated rivalry against the remnants of Alpha Academy, culminating in a six-person mixed tag team victory on September 2, 2024, where Gable interfered to secure the win for his stablemates. The faction then clashed with The Wyatt Sicks in August 2024, including a high-stakes street fight loss on September 9 that concluded the feud, though American Made showcased their physical prowess through ambushes and coordinated attacks. Later confrontations included a mixed tag team match against Latino World Order on November 18, 2024, highlighting Ivy Nile's role alongside Gable, and ongoing skirmishes that reinforced their aggressive patriotism.[63] In early 2025, The Creed Brothers challenged for the World Tag Team Championship in a losing effort against The War Raiders on February 10, demonstrating the faction's ambition for gold while manipulating storylines through backstage interference to build momentum toward larger opportunities.[64] The group's dominance peaked through title pursuits and rival beatdowns, such as Gable's individual challenges intertwined with faction support, until a pivotal incident on June 23, 2025, when Penta attacked Gable backstage after the leader mocked Penta's recent loss to Bron Breakker, resulting in Gable suffering a severe arm injury that required surgery and sidelined him.[65] This assault, depicted as Penta snapping Gable's arm in a brutal angle, shifted American Made's leadership to El Grande Americano (portrayed by Ludwig Kaiser) as interim leader, allowing the faction to continue activities with ongoing feuds and title pursuits, including the WWE Speed Championship reign.[66]El Grande Americano gimmick and injury (2025–present)
In early 2025, Chad Gable introduced the masked luchador persona El Grande Americano as a mysterious figure within the American Made faction's storylines on WWE Raw, initially appearing as an enigmatic ally who aided the group in matches while Gable continued performing under his real identity, creating intrigue about the character's true allegiance.[66][67] The gimmick debuted in March 2025 and featured prominently at WrestleMania 41, where El Grande Americano defeated Rey Fenix in a singles match on Night 1, solidifying the persona's role as a high-flying, patriotic enforcer blending American exceptionalism with lucha libre flair.[68] Under the El Grande Americano guise, Gable advanced in the WWE Speed Championship #1 contender tournament, defeating Erik on April 23, 2025, in the semifinals before capturing the title on May 7, 2025, by defeating Dragon Lee in a rapid-paced match taped for WWE Speed, marking his first singles championship in WWE and highlighting the persona's agility and technical prowess.[69][70] El Grande Americano defended the title successfully, including against Berto on June 18, 2025. In early June, El Grande Americano qualified for the 2025 Money in the Bank ladder match by winning a triple threat bout against CM Punk and AJ Styles on the June 2 episode of Raw, though the persona did not secure the contract in the June 7 pay-per-view event won by Seth Rollins.[71][72] Speculation about Gable's involvement peaked in June 2025, culminating in a storyline reveal during the June 30 episode of Raw where contextual clues, including shared mannerisms and double-duty appearances, confirmed El Grande Americano as Gable's alter ego, shortly before he suffered a legitimate shoulder injury during a backstage attack by Penta on the June 23 episode of Raw that necessitated rotator cuff surgery.[73][66] The injury angle was integrated into the broadcast, with Gable undergoing successful surgery in early July 2025, as announced by WWE officials.[74][75] Gable's recovery from the shoulder surgery is projected to last approximately six months, positioning a potential in-ring return for late 2025 or early 2026, depending on rehabilitation progress, during which time the El Grande Americano gimmick was transitioned to Ludwig Kaiser within American Made to maintain faction momentum.[76] Before stepping away, Gable named El Grande Americano (now portrayed by Kaiser) as the interim leader of American Made on the June 30 Raw, shifting group dynamics toward a more aggressive, mystery-driven direction amid internal tensions.[66] The WWE Speed Championship reign under El Grande Americano continued with Kaiser until the title was lost to Jasper Troy on November 11, 2025. As of November 2025, Gable is progressing in recovery and expected to begin training at the WWE Performance Center soon.[77] This hiatus has allowed Gable to focus on healing while the faction evolves, with reports indicating WWE's intent to reintegrate him post-recovery to resolve lingering storyline threads involving the gimmick's legacy.[78]Personal life
Family
Chad Gable, whose real name is Charles Edward Betts, married his longtime girlfriend Kristi Oliver on June 19, 2011, after dating for nine years.[79][80] Betts is a member of the Comanche Nation.[81] The couple has three children together: two daughters and a son named Charles James Betts, born on November 19, 2019.[9][82][83] Kristi Oliver has been described as a supportive partner throughout Gable's WWE career, accompanying him to events and providing stability amid his frequent travels.[84] WWE publicly announced the birth of their son Charles James, highlighting the family's role in Gable's personal milestones during his professional journey.[82] Gable's younger brother, Parker Betts, has been occasionally referenced in family contexts, such as during personal celebrations including Parker's own wedding in 2018.[9][85]Education and other interests
Chad Gable attended Northern Michigan University on a wrestling scholarship as part of the Olympic Education Center program, where he trained intensively while pursuing general studies and earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2010.[16][22] In 2021, Gable graduated from Full Sail University with a Master of Fine Arts in Media Design, achieving a 4.0 GPA and serving as valedictorian of his class.[81] Gable has maintained a longstanding passion for video production and motion graphics since age 14, which influenced his choice of studies and continues to intrigue him as a potential post-wrestling pursuit, including aspirations to work in Hollywood on film projects.[86][87] He has also expressed interest in opening a wrestling school upon retirement to train future athletes.[88] In his philanthropy efforts, Gable serves as an official ambassador for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minnesota, his home state, where he has hosted training sessions for athletes and participated in promotional initiatives to promote inclusion and support the organization.[13][89]Other media
Video games
Chad Gable debuted as a playable character in the WWE 2K video game series with WWE 2K17 in 2016, featuring a moveset that drew heavily from his amateur wrestling background, including signature maneuvers like the ankle pick takedown and the Grand Amplitude suplex hold. His inclusion highlighted his technical grappling style, with finishers emphasizing suplex variations and submissions reflective of his Olympic-level Greco-Roman wrestling experience.[1] Gable has appeared as a playable wrestler in every mainline WWE 2K title since his debut, from WWE 2K18 through WWE 2K25, with attire options updated to correspond to his evolving on-screen personas, such as those from Alpha Academy and American Made.[90] These updates include alternate costumes like singlets for his amateur roots and team gear for tag team affiliations, allowing players to recreate key moments from his career.[91] His in-game overall rating progressed from 75 in WWE 2K20 to 80 in WWE 2K25, reflecting gradual improvements in attributes like striking power and technical offense.[92] Beyond the console series, Gable has been featured in WWE's mobile titles, including WWE Champions and WWE SuperCard, where he appears as collectible cards with variants tied to his gimmick changes, such as base versions, Alpha Academy editions, and event-specific cards from WrestleMania or SummerSlam.[93][94] These digital representations often include boosted stats for his technical prowess and special abilities like enhanced suplex damage, enabling strategic team-building in gameplay modes.[93]Television and film
Chad Gable has been a mainstay on WWE's flagship television programs since his debut in 2014, regularly appearing on Raw, SmackDown, and NXT to portray various characters and contribute to ongoing storylines.[2] His tenure on these shows includes his initial run as an amateur wrestling-inspired competitor in NXT, evolving into tag team narratives on the main roster, and a brief singles push under the diminutive "Shorty G" persona from 2019 to 2020. By early 2025, Gable adopted the masked luchador character El Grande Americano, featuring prominently in Raw episodes streamed on Netflix, where he engaged in high-profile matches against international talents like Penta El Zero Miedo.[65] Gable has made guest appearances in WWE's documentary series, providing insights into his career progression. He was featured in the 2015-2016 reality series Breaking Ground on the WWE Network (later available on Peacock), which chronicled the journeys of NXT talents including his partnership with Jason Jordan as American Alpha.[95] In 2025, Gable announced a personal documentary series titled "The Renewal," offering a behind-the-scenes look at his injury recovery and professional comeback. As of November 2025, Gable is in the final phases of recovery from his July 2025 shoulder surgery and is preparing for an in-ring return while continuing work on the project.[96][6] Gable's family has occasionally appeared in WWE storylines through unplanned but incorporated cameos, adding emotional depth to his on-screen arcs. During his September 2023 Intercontinental Championship challenge against Gunther on Raw, his wife and three children were present ringside; WWE integrated them into post-match segments after discovering their attendance, with his daughter visibly emotional following the loss.[97] As of November 2025, Gable has no major roles in non-WWE films or television productions. Prior to re-signing his WWE contract in June 2024, he considered pursuing opportunities in Hollywood, such as acting in films, but opted to remain with the company for continued wrestling commitments.[98]Championships and accomplishments
Amateur wrestling
Chad Gable, born Charles Edward Betts, began his amateur wrestling career in Greco-Roman style during his youth in Minnesota. He achieved early success at the high school level, winning the Minnesota Class AA state championship at 160 pounds in 2004 while competing for St. Michael-Albertville High School, finishing the season with a 48-1 record.[14] Betts continued his development at Northern Michigan University, where he trained with the United States Olympic Education Center's Greco-Roman program from 2004 to 2010, forgoing traditional collegiate freestyle competition to focus on international-style wrestling. During this period, he earned All-American honors by placing third at the 2008 U.S. National Championships in the 84 kg division.[99] He also qualified for multiple World Teams, including in 2005 and 2006, and competed at the 2009 World Championships, where he finished 32nd in the 84 kg category.[19] On the international stage, Betts secured a silver medal at the 2006 World University Games in 84 kg Greco-Roman after reaching the gold-medal match.[100] In 2012, he had a breakout year, winning the gold medal at the Pan American Championships in the 84 kg division by defeating Cuba's Pablo Shorey in the final.[101] Later that year, he earned a silver medal at the Ljubomir Ivanovic-Gedza International tournament in Belgrade, Serbia.[102] Betts capped his amateur career by winning the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 84 kg Greco-Roman division, securing a spot on the U.S. team for the London Olympics.[1] At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual bronze medalist Pablo Shorey, finishing ninth overall.[19]Professional wrestling
