Connor Ripley
Connor James Ripley (born 13 February 1993) is an English professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for EFL League Two club Swindon Town.[1][2][3] Born in Middlesbrough to former England international winger Stuart Ripley, he grew up supporting his hometown club Middlesbrough before joining their academy as a youth player.[4][5][6] Ripley began his professional career with Middlesbrough in 2010, making two first-team appearances in the Championship, and went on to represent England at youth international level, earning caps for the under-19 and under-20 teams including a debut in a 1–0 win over Portugal in 2011.[2][7][8] Ripley's career has primarily involved spells in the lower tiers of English football, with loan moves early on to clubs such as Oxford United (League Two, 2011–2012), Oldham Athletic (League One, 2016–2017; 46 appearances), Östersunds FK (Swedish Superettan, 2014), and Motherwell (Scottish Premiership, 2015–2016), where he made 36 appearances.[2] After leaving Middlesbrough in 2019, he played for Preston North End until 2022 and a variety of other EFL clubs including Morecambe (46 League One appearances in 2022–2023) and Port Vale (69 appearances across League One and Two from 2023 to 2025), accumulating over 340 career appearances (including cup competitions) and more than 70 clean sheets as of November 2025.[2][5] He joined Swindon Town on a permanent basis in February 2025, where he has since become the first-choice goalkeeper, featuring in approximately 30 League Two matches with 8 clean sheets as of November 2025.[2][1]Biography
Early life
Connor Ripley was born on 13 February 1993 in Middlesbrough, England.[1] He is the son of former England international winger Stuart Ripley, whose professional career provided early exposure to football for the young Connor.[5][4] The family relocated to Switzerland during Ripley's childhood, where he spent three years living and developed fluency in French.[4][9] Following this period abroad, Ripley grew up in the Ribble Valley area of Lancashire, near Blackburn.[10] He received his education at St Leonard's Primary School in Langho and later at Ribblesdale High School in Clitheroe.[10][11] Ripley's initial involvement in organized youth football came through Blackburn Rovers' academy, influenced by his father's long tenure at the club, before he joined Middlesbrough's academy on a two-year scholarship in June 2009 at the age of 16. Initially playing as a striker in his youth, he later switched to goalkeeper.[1][12][4]Personal life
Ripley is fluent in French, a skill he acquired during a three-year period living in Switzerland as a boy.[9] He is married and a father to five children, with his fifth child born in December 2024.[13] In his personal time, Ripley has expressed a strong interest in art, particularly drawing, which he pursued through an art scholarship during his youth in Switzerland and has considered as an alternative career path.[9]Club career
Middlesbrough (2011–2019)
Connor Ripley signed his first professional contract with Middlesbrough in January 2011 at the age of 17, having progressed through the club's youth academy after an earlier stint at Blackburn Rovers.[14] He made his senior debut for Middlesbrough on 5 March 2011, coming on as a substitute for the injured Jason Steele in a 5–2 Championship defeat to Reading, during which he conceded three goals in 51 minutes.[15] His second and only full appearance followed on 14 January 2012 in a 0–2 home loss to Burnley, where a long-range strike by Kieran Trippier slipped through his grasp for the opening goal.[16] These two outings represented Ripley's total first-team involvement with Middlesbrough over eight years, as he remained behind established goalkeepers like Steele and later Dimitrios Konstantopoulos.[2] To gain competitive experience, Ripley embarked on eight loan spells from Middlesbrough between 2012 and 2019, spanning England, Scotland, and Sweden, which allowed him to accumulate over 130 senior appearances across various leagues.[17] His initial outing came in April 2012 with League Two side Oxford United on an emergency loan amid injuries to their goalkeepers; he made one appearance in a 1–0 win over Southend United.[18] The following season, Ripley joined Bradford City on a short-term loan in August 2013, featuring once in a League Cup tie against Huddersfield Town.[19] In March 2014, Ripley moved to Swedish second-tier club Östersunds FK on loan until the end of the season, where he made 14 appearances under manager Graham Potter, competing with veterans Peter Augustsson and Aly Keita while helping the team adapt to a possession-based style in the Superettan.[20] His most extensive loan came in July 2015 with Scottish Premiership side Motherwell for the 2015–16 season; Ripley debuted in a 1–0 opening-day victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle and went on to play 36 times, including 34 league matches, contributing to a fifth-place finish and notable clean sheets in key wins like a 2–0 Scottish Cup triumph over Raith Rovers.[12] The 2016–17 campaign saw him loaned to League One's Oldham Athletic for the full season, where he featured in 46 matches as the first-choice keeper, recording 13 clean sheets despite the team's relegation battle.[21] Ripley returned briefly to Middlesbrough in summer 2017 before another season-long loan to Burton Albion in the Championship, though he was recalled in January 2018 after just two appearances amid limited playing time behind Stephen Bywater.[22] He then joined League One club Bury on loan in January 2018, making 15 appearances and providing stability in goal during a mid-table campaign that included a memorable 3–2 win over promotion-chasing Shrewsbury Town.[23] His final Middlesbrough loan was to Accrington Stanley in League One for the first half of the 2018–19 season, where he played 21 times, including a standout performance with several key saves in a 1–0 victory over Rochdale, helping the club secure survival on the final day.[24] Following the Accrington loan, Ripley transferred permanently to Preston North End in January 2019 for an undisclosed fee, marking the end of his association with Middlesbrough.[24]| Loan Club | Season | Appearances | Key Notes |

Preston North End (2019–2022)
On 9 January 2019, Connor Ripley joined Preston North End from Middlesbrough on a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract until the summer of 2022.[7][24] He had been recalled from a loan spell at Accrington Stanley earlier that season to enable the move, bringing prior experience from multiple lower-league loans that had honed his professional development.[7] Ripley's opportunities in the first team were limited due to strong competition in goal, primarily from established starter Declan Rudd under manager Alex Neil, and later backups like Louis Moult and Daniel Iversen during loan periods.[24] Over his three-and-a-half years at Deepdale, he made 10 appearances across all competitions, including one in the Championship during the 2020–21 season—a 0–2 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on 23 September 2020—along with several cup outings such as in the EFL Cup and FA Cup.[25][26] These included notable moments like a 3–3 draw against Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship on 27 April 2019 and an FA Cup third-round loss to Norwich City on 4 January 2020, where he conceded three goals.[27] To gain more playing time, Ripley was loaned to League Two side Salford City on 16 October 2021 for the remainder of the 2021–22 season.[28] During his brief stint, he featured in seven league matches, starting all and keeping two clean sheets, including a 2–0 win over Hartlepool United on his debut.[29] The loan ended in November 2021 after a change in Salford's goalkeeping situation.[28] Ripley was released by Preston North End at the conclusion of the 2021–22 season upon the expiry of his contract, having made minimal impact on the first-team squad despite his potential as a backup option.[30]Morecambe (2022–2023)
After limited opportunities at Preston North End, where he made just ten appearances over three and a half years, Ripley sought regular first-team football.[31] On 27 June 2022, Ripley signed a one-year contract with League One club Morecambe on a free transfer, effective from 1 July, following his release from Preston.[32] He was immediately installed as the club's first-choice goalkeeper and captain by manager Derek Adams.[31] During the 2022–2023 season, Ripley made 50 appearances across all competitions for Morecambe, starting every match and keeping 10 clean sheets while conceding 82 goals.[33] His consistent performances were pivotal in a challenging campaign that saw Morecambe finish 23rd and suffer relegation to League Two. Ripley's standout form in November 2022, which included three clean sheets in five league appearances and a remarkable double penalty save during a 2–2 draw against Fleetwood Town on 19 November, earned him the EFL League One Player of the Month award.[34] These key saves and shutouts highlighted his shot-stopping ability and composure under pressure.[35] At the end of the season, Ripley was voted Morecambe's Player of the Year for 2022–2023, recognizing his leadership and reliability amid the team's struggles.[36] His contract expired in summer 2023, leading to his departure as a free agent.[31]Port Vale (2023–2025)
On 22 June 2023, Connor Ripley signed a two-year contract with League One club Port Vale, effective from 1 July, following the expiry of his deal at Morecambe.[31][5] The move brought the experienced goalkeeper to Vale Park as a free agent, with manager Andy Crosby citing Ripley's reliability and shot-stopping ability from his previous campaign as key factors in the signing.[31] Ripley quickly established himself as Port Vale's first-choice goalkeeper during the 2023–24 League One season, making 46 appearances as the team battled relegation.[37] Despite a challenging campaign marked by managerial changes and defensive vulnerabilities, Ripley contributed significantly to Vale's efforts, including a standout performance in the EFL Carabao Cup quarter-final against his former club Middlesbrough in December 2023, where he made several key saves in a 3–0 defeat.[4] Port Vale ultimately finished 23rd with 41 points, suffering relegation to League Two after a 10–11–25 record.[38] In the 2024–25 League Two season, Ripley continued as a regular starter, featuring in 23 matches and keeping nine clean sheets before departing midway through the campaign.[39] His consistent play helped stabilize the defense during Port Vale's promotion push, though the team shared goalkeeping duties with Ben Amos.[40] On 3 February 2025, Ripley and Port Vale mutually agreed to terminate his contract early, allowing him to join rivals Swindon Town on a permanent transfer until the season's end; in total, he made 69 appearances for Vale across both seasons.[41][39]Swindon Town (2025–present)
In February 2025, Connor Ripley joined Swindon Town on a short-term deal until the end of the 2024–25 season, following his departure from Port Vale.[39][42] The 31-year-old goalkeeper, drawing on his prior League One experience, quickly established himself as a reliable option in League Two, making 14 appearances during the remainder of the campaign.[43] Ripley's solid performances led to a new two-year contract extension in June 2025, securing his position at the club until 2027.[44][45] By November 2025, he had accumulated 30 appearances across the partial 2024–25 and full 2025–26 seasons in League Two, including cup competitions.[46] In the 2025–26 season alone, the first-choice goalkeeper featured in 16 matches, recording 4 clean sheets while conceding 21 goals, and receiving 2 yellow cards for his efforts.[47] His contributions have been instrumental in Swindon Town's strong start to the 2025–26 League Two campaign, where the team sits first in the table with 30 points from 16 matches as of November 18, 2025.[48] Ripley's market value stands at €150,000, reflecting his ongoing importance to the squad.[1]International career
Under-19 career
Connor Ripley earned his first call-up to the England under-19 national team in October 2011, during his time in the Middlesbrough youth academy, where his development as a goalkeeper had positioned him for international recognition. He made his debut on 7 October 2011, starting in goal for a 1–0 friendly victory against Portugal at the Limoges Tournament in France, helping secure a clean sheet in the narrow win.[49] Two days later, on 9 October 2011, Ripley came on as a substitute goalkeeper in another Limoges Tournament match, a 3–1 win over Ukraine, contributing to England's successful tournament campaign.[49] Ripley added two more caps later that year and into 2012. On 10 November 2011, he started in a 1–0 home friendly win against Denmark at the American Express Community Stadium in Brighton, again keeping a clean sheet.[49] His final under-19 appearance came on 28 February 2012, substituting in during a 2–1 friendly victory over the Czech Republic at the Matchroom Stadium in Leyton.[49] In total, Ripley accumulated four caps for the under-19s, all in competitive friendlies, showcasing his reliability as a backup and occasional starter goalkeeper. Earlier in July 2012, Ripley was part of the England under-19 squad for the UEFA European Under-19 Championship finals in Estonia but remained an unused substitute across three group stage matches, including a 1–1 draw with Croatia, a 2–1 win over Serbia, and a 2–1 victory against France that advanced England to the semi-finals.[49]Under-20 career
Ripley earned his sole call-up to the England under-20 team in 2013, building on his prior experience at under-19 level. On 28 May 2013, he was included in head coach Peter Taylor's 21-man squad for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey, serving as one of three goalkeepers alongside Sam Johnstone and George Long.[50] Prior to the tournament, Ripley made his only appearance for the under-20s on 16 June 2013, substituting in at halftime for George Long during a 3–0 friendly victory over Uruguay in Antalya, Turkey. He played the full second half in goal without conceding, as part of the team's preparations. This cap came while Ripley was still contracted to Middlesbrough, ahead of his season-long loan to Bradford City later that summer.[19]Career analysis
Style of play
Connor Ripley is recognized as an all-round goalkeeper, particularly noted for his commanding presence in the penalty area and ability to collect crosses effectively.[51] His height of 191 cm contributes to this strength, allowing him to dominate aerial challenges and organize the defense with assurance and calmness.[52] Ripley demonstrates strong concentration and positioning, enabling him to read plays well and maintain composure under pressure.[52] In terms of distribution, Ripley excels with both short passes and long-range options, including accurate long throws and kicks that facilitate build-up play from the back.[52] He is comfortable on the ball at his feet, reflecting influences from modern ball-playing goalkeepers like Ederson and Alisson, whom he has cited for their precise passing under pressure.[4] This versatility has proven adaptable across different leagues, from Championship loans to League Two competitions.[51] Ripley's shot-stopping relies on quick reflexes and solid decision-making, often making key saves in tight situations.[51] However, he has occasionally shown vulnerability in high-pressure moments, such as misjudging crosses or allowing shots through crowded areas to deflect off him.[51] These instances highlight areas for refinement, though his overall safe handling and organizational skills remain hallmarks of his game.[52]Career statistics
Connor Ripley, as a professional goalkeeper, has not scored any senior goals throughout his career. As of 18 November 2025, he has accumulated 292 appearances in league competitions, conceding 413 goals while keeping 73 clean sheets. These figures encompass his time across multiple English leagues, from the Championship to League Two, as well as a stint in the Swedish Superettan. In addition to league matches, Ripley has made approximately 45 appearances in domestic cups (FA Cup, EFL Cup, and others), though detailed metrics for goals conceded and clean sheets in these games are less comprehensively tracked but contribute to his overall record of reliability in shot-stopping.[2] The following table summarizes Ripley's league statistics by club, highlighting key seasons such as his breakout 46 appearances for Oldham Athletic in 2016–2017 (where he recorded 18 clean sheets) and his ongoing contributions at Swindon Town, with 16 matches in the 2025–2026 League Two season so far (as of 18 November 2025). Data excludes cup competitions for focus on primary league play. In June 2025, Ripley agreed to a two-year contract extension with Swindon Town until June 2027.[45]| Club | Years Active | League (Division) Examples | Appearances | Goals Conceded | Clean Sheets |
