Cook Craig
Nicholas Roderick "Cook" Craig is an Australian guitarist, singer, and songwriter best known as the rhythm guitarist, occasional keyboardist, and backing vocalist for the prolific psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, as well as a bassist and contributor to the garage rock group The Murlocs.[1][2][3] Born on 23 June 1988 in Melbourne, Craig emerged in the local music scene during the late 2000s, initially collaborating with future bandmates through shared projects before becoming a core member of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard around the band's formation in 2010.[4][5] In the group, he provides rhythmic guitar layers, melodic textures via effects like wah-wah pedals, and sporadic lead vocals in his distinctive, quirky style often described as "Zolo"—a playful nod to influences from Zoloft or similar eccentric songwriting.[2] His contributions help anchor the band's expansive sound, which spans genres from garage rock and prog to jazz fusion and microtonal experiments, with King Gizzard releasing over 25 studio albums since 2012, many featuring Craig's songwriting input on tracks like those from albums such as Nonagon Infinity (2016) and Flight b741 (2024).[1][2] Beyond King Gizzard, Craig has been a longstanding member of The Murlocs since their inception in 2011, where he plays bass and contributes to their raw, soul-infused garage rock output, including albums like Calm Ya Farm (2023).[1][3] He has also appeared in earlier collaborations such as the band Revolver.[3] As a solo artist under the alias Pipe-Eye, Craig has pursued a lo-fi, bedroom psych-rock aesthetic since 2015, self-recording most elements except drums (often provided by King Gizzard's Michael Cavanagh) at home studios; his discography includes five albums, with the most recent, Pipe-defy, released in October 2024 via the band's own p(doom) Records imprint, exploring mundane themes through idiosyncratic lyrics and fuzzy production.[2][6] Craig's multifaceted role in Melbourne's vibrant psych-rock community continues to evolve, highlighted by King Gizzard's 2025 performances, including a sold-out show at London's Royal Albert Hall on 4 November.[7]Early life
Upbringing
Nicholas Roderick Craig, professionally known as Cook Craig, was born on 23 June 1988 in Australia.[3] Craig grew up in the Geelong area near Melbourne, where he experienced a typical Australian childhood shaped by local community life.[8][9] During his high school years in Geelong, Craig formed early social connections through school and music activities, including friendships with future King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard bandmate Stu Mackenzie.[8]Musical beginnings
During his teenage years in the Geelong area near Melbourne, Cook Craig developed an early interest in music, particularly bass and guitar, influenced by the vibrant local scene and his social circle of peers who shared a passion for rock sounds. Growing up in the late 2000s, Craig was drawn into playing instruments through high school friendships, where he began experimenting with bass. This period marked his initial foray from casual listener to active participant, shaped by the raw energy of emerging Australian rock acts.[10][8] Craig's high school music activities centered around informal jamming sessions and forming bands with classmates, including future King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard collaborator Stu Mackenzie. One notable early project was Revolver & Sun, a rootsy rock outfit formed around 2008 and active into the late 2000s, where Craig handled bass duties alongside Mackenzie on guitar and vocals, Fraser Gorman on harmonica and guitar, and Monty Hartnett on drums. These sessions emphasized beatnik-style rock with influences from Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones, fostering Craig's skills in rhythm sections and collaborative improvisation among the group.[8][11] By the late 2000s, Craig's exposure to Geelong and Melbourne's garage rock and psychedelic scenes accelerated his transition from hobbyist to aspiring musician. The band performed at venues like The National Hotel. This immersion in 1960s-inspired garage rock and emerging psych elements, alongside continued jamming with peers from his shared social circle—including Mackenzie—solidified his commitment to the local underground, blending raw energy with experimental flair.[10][8][12]Professional career

With The Murlocs
Cook Craig joined The Murlocs as bassist in 2013, bringing his rhythmic foundation to the band's blues-infused garage rock sound while maintaining ties to shared collaborators from King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard.[15] His involvement began with the debut studio album Loopholes, released in 2014 by Flightless Records in LP and CD formats, where he provided bass guitar across all 10 tracks, contributing to the record's raw, distorted R&B edge.[16] On the follow-up Young Blindness (2016, Flightless Records), Craig's bass lines anchored tracks like "Rolling On" and "Adolescence," enhancing the album's psychedelic garage rock vibe; it was issued in multiple vinyl pressings (including limited splatter editions) and CD.[17][18] Craig continued as the band's bassist for Manic Candid Episode (2019, Flightless Records), delivering energetic performances on all tracks that matched the album's frenetic pace, with releases in standard LP, CD, and digital formats.[19] The 2021 album Bittersweet Demons (ATO Records) featured Craig's bass work throughout its 10 tracks, alongside additional contributions on keyboards and wine glass percussion for the closing song "Noise of Silence"; available in LP (various colors), CD, and cassette editions.[20] For Rapscallion (2022, ATO Records), Craig supplied bass guitar on every track, supporting the record's heavy, narrative-driven themes of rebellion; it appeared in LP (including eco-mix variants), CD, and digital.[21][22] Craig's bass underpinned the full-band collaborative effort on Calm Ya Farm (2023, ATO Records), including tracks like "Initiative" and "Russian Roulette," twisting country-rock elements with garage-punk flair; released in LP (special editions like bone/olive green), CD, and digital.[23][24] In addition to studio work, Craig performed bass on the live album Live at the Teragram Ballroom (2024, ATO Records), a double LP capturing a 2022 Los Angeles performance spanning 16 songs from the band's catalog, highlighting his onstage dynamics in green splatter vinyl and standard black editions.[25][26]Solo career as Pipe-Eye
Cook Craig launched his solo project Pipe-Eye in 2015 as a psychedelic pop outlet, where he handles the majority of the writing, recording, and production himself, with drums typically contributed by Michael Cavanagh of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, recorded at the band's headquarters.[2] This independent approach allows Craig to explore a kooky, idiosyncratic style centered on mundane topics, providing fans with insight into his personal creative persona distinct from his band work.[2] Thematically, Pipe-Eye's projects have evolved to emphasize personal storytelling and imaginative narratives, across five albums: beginning with Cosmic Blip (2016) and Inside/Outside (2019), then Laugh About Life (2018), where Craig delves into humorous and jovial reflections on love, life, and everyday experiences, drawing lyrical inspirations akin to classic songwriters like Lennon and McCartney.[27] By Dream Themes (2021), the focus shifted to adventurous, dream-like tales inspired by isolation during daydreams, evoking fictional TV show plots and characters that unfold in idle moments like staring out a window or lying in bed.[28] A key milestone came with the 2024 release of Pipe-defy, Craig's fifth full-length album under the moniker, self-released via p(doom) records, King Gizzard's imprint. Produced largely by Craig alone, the album leans into synth-heavy instrumentation, wonky rhythms, and deep basslines, continuing his solo ethos while incorporating funk influences for a highly introspective lyrical bent.[29][30] Reception has been positive, with critics praising its quirky earworms and innovative layers as a fresh evolution in Craig's solo catalog.[30][31] Balancing Pipe-Eye with commitments to King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and The Murlocs presents challenges, as the solo work demands a slower, self-directed pace without the urgency of group schedules, allowing full creative control but limiting opportunities for live performances, which Craig has largely avoided to date.[32] This unhurried process underscores Pipe-Eye's role as a personal outlet, occasionally echoing the experimental flair of his band contributions in its boundary-pushing sound design.[32]Discography
Solo studio albums
Cook Craig has pursued his solo career under the Pipe-Eye moniker since 2015.[2] Pipe-Eye's debut studio album, Laugh About Life, was released on April 21, 2017, by Flightless Records and features 13 tracks structured as five acts, resembling a theatrical production with humorous and jovial songs that build to tragic conclusions.[33][34][35] The follow-up, Inside/Outside, arrived on June 7, 2019, also via Flightless Records, spanning 13 tracks that delve into themes of confinement and a desire to venture outward, as exemplified by the title track's reflections on seeing the world beyond familiar bounds.[36] Dream Themes, the third studio album, was issued on November 26, 2021, by p(doom) records and consists of 9 tracks composed during periods of isolation, functioning as introspective day-dream soundtracks akin to imagined TV themes that emerge when the eyes are closed but the mind remains active, blending hypnotic grooves with playful, narrative-driven imagination.[37] The most recent release, Pipe-defy, came out on October 18, 2024, through p(doom) records with 11 tracks; written and recorded primarily by Craig (with drums by Michael Cavanagh and mixing by Joseph Walker), it incorporates adventurous psychedelic elements and groove-driven compositions to chart new sonic territories.[38][29]Solo extended plays
Cook Craig's debut solo extended play under the Pipe-Eye moniker, Cosmic Blip, was released on September 25, 2015, via Flightless Records in formats including cassette, vinyl, and digital.[39] The EP consists of eight tracks, blending lo-fi psychedelic pop with atmospheric space ambient interludes, such as the short "Cosmic Blip" segments that punctuate the record's esoteric flow.[40] Key songs like "People Move Along," "All That," and "Tick Tock" showcase Craig's early experimentation with groovy, slacker rock influences and noisy production, recorded in his bedroom in Fairfield, Victoria.[41] This release served as an experimental precursor to his fuller solo albums, introducing the Pipe-Eye aesthetic that evolved into more structured psychedelic explorations.[42] No additional extended plays have been released under Pipe-Eye as of 2025.[43]With King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard
