He attended Shawnee High School, where he excelled in soccer and lacrosse while discovering his passion for acting through drama classes and school productions. His athletic talents earned him a soccer scholarship to Towson University in Maryland, but during his time there, he shifted focus by enrolling in theater courses and ultimately decided to pursue a career in acting over sports.[3] Van Acker made his television debut in 2009 with guest appearances as Donny Kendall in Castle and Parker in Greek.[4] His first major role came in 2010 as Ian Archer, a student with enhanced abilities, in the Cartoon Network mystery series Tower Prep, marking his breakthrough in genre television.[1] He joined Pretty Little Liars in 2011, replacing Parker Bagley as the enigmatic Jason DiLaurentis, a character central to the show's intricate plotlines involving secrets and suspense in the fictional town of Rosewood; he appeared in 35 episodes across six seasons.[1] Following this, he starred as Remi Delatour in Devious Maids and had a recurring role as Aqualad in Titans (2019).[5] In film, Van Acker has appeared in supporting and leading roles, including Corey Gage in the action comedy Spy Intervention (2020) and Jake in the post-apocalyptic thriller Last Survivors (2021), the latter of which he also produced.[1] His versatility spans genres, from teen dramas and mysteries to sci-fi and horror, with Orion—a mind-bending two-hander about truth and reality—representing his latest lead performance, completed in 2024 and premiered in 2025.[2]Early life and education
Upbringing and family
Drew Van Acker was born Andrew Gregory Van Acker on April 2, 1986, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[6] His family relocated several times during his early childhood due to his father's job opportunities, settling in Medford, New Jersey, by the time he was around 10 years old, where he spent much of his upbringing.[7][6][8] Van Acker has Belgian (Flemish) descent on his father's side, tracing back to his paternal grandfather, Thomas Raymond Van Acker Sr., whose roots were in the Flanders region of Belgium; this heritage constitutes one-eighth of his ancestry, alongside primarily German and English background with smaller Irish elements.[6] He has siblings, and his family provided a supportive environment during his formative years in Medford, fostering his early interests.[9]Academic pursuits and early interests
Drew Van Acker attended Shawnee High School in Medford, New Jersey, where he balanced academics with extracurricular activities that shaped his early interests.[10] At Shawnee, Van Acker excelled in athletics, starring on both the soccer and lacrosse teams, which highlighted his competitive drive and physical prowess.[8] His success in soccer earned him a scholarship to Towson University in Maryland, where he enrolled as a forward on the men's soccer team.[3] Alongside his sports commitments, Van Acker discovered his passion for performing arts through involvement in high school drama classes, marking his initial foray into acting.[10] While at Towson University, Van Acker briefly pursued higher education, taking theater courses to nurture his growing interest in acting.[11] Ultimately, he left the university after a short time to focus on his acting ambitions full-time, relocating to New York City to pursue opportunities in the field.[11]Professional career
Modeling and acting beginnings
Drew Van Acker's entry into the entertainment industry began with modeling in 2005, following an encounter with a talent scout from ProScout during his sophomore year at Towson University.[12] His athletic background as a soccer and lacrosse player helped secure physically demanding roles, primarily as an underwear model for brands including International Jock, Abercrombie & Fitch, and American Eagle.[8] These campaigns marked his initial professional exposure, with additional background work in the 2006 film The Good Shepherd.[12] After leaving college, Van Acker relocated to New York City in 2005 to pursue modeling full-time, signing with B-1 Models.[8] Finding limited opportunities in acting there, he moved to Los Angeles to transition into on-screen work, where he signed with Shepard Smith Management and the William Morris Endeavor agency.[12] Van Acker's acting debut came in 2009 with a guest role as Donny Kendall, a rebellious teen and murder victim, in the episode "Hedge Fund Homeboys" of ABC's Castle.[13] That same year, he appeared as Parker in the episode "High and Dry" of ABC Family's Greek, portraying a supporting character in the college fraternity drama.[14] He also co-starred as Ryan Welling, a young adult navigating summer romance and rivalries, in the 12-episode WB.com web series The Lake.[7]Major roles and breakthroughs
Van Acker's acting career gained momentum with his lead role as Ian Archer in the 2010 Cartoon Network live-action mystery series Tower Prep, marking his breakthrough as a protagonist in a scripted television project.[8] In the series, he portrayed a resourceful high school student trapped in a secretive boarding school, drawing praise from executive producer Glen Morgan for his versatility and potential.[8] This opportunity positioned him as a standout up-and-comer in the industry, building on his early modeling background to secure more substantial acting gigs.[15] His visibility surged with the recurring role of Jason DiLaurentis, the enigmatic older brother in the DiLaurentis family, on ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars from 2011 to 2016.[7] Cast in season 2 after replacing Parker Bagley to better align with the character's expanded narrative demands, Van Acker brought a brooding intensity to Jason, whose mysterious past and complex relationships with the protagonists fueled much of the show's suspense.[16] The role earned widespread recognition amid the series' massive popularity, amassing a dedicated fanbase particularly among younger audiences and establishing Van Acker as a key figure in teen drama.[8] Critics and fans alike noted his portrayal's contribution to Jason's layered ambiguity, enhancing the show's exploration of family secrets and intrigue.[13] Van Acker continued to build his television presence as Remi Delatour, the privileged son of a wealthy socialite, in Lifetime's soap opera Devious Maids from 2013 to 2015.[13] As a series regular in the first two seasons, his character navigated themes of addiction, romance, and family dysfunction within the ensemble, adding depth to the show's satirical take on class and domestic life.[17] This part solidified his transition toward more ensemble-driven narratives in primetime soaps. In 2017, he took on a series regular role as Detective Tommy Campbell, a skilled LAPD officer and former pro surfer, in CBS's short-lived police drama Training Day.[18] The character provided Van Acker with an opportunity to explore action-oriented dynamics in a gritty procedural, partnering with leads Bill Paxton and Justin Cornwell to tackle high-stakes investigations.[18] Van Acker's genre work expanded into superhero territory in 2019 with his portrayal of Garth, also known as Aqualad, in the second season of DC Universe's Titans.[19] Appearing in flashback sequences, he depicted the Atlantean hero's early days with the Titans team, highlighting themes of loyalty and tragedy that tied into the series' darker tone.[19] Collectively, these roles marked Van Acker's evolution from a newcomer in niche live-action series to a versatile performer in high-profile network and streaming projects, elevating his status through diverse portrayals of mysterious, athletic, and heroic figures that resonated with broad audiences.[8][13]Producing and recent developments
Van Acker's transition into producing began with Spy Intervention (2020), an action-comedy in which he portrayed the lead spy Corey Gage while serving as executive producer, contributing to the film's lighthearted spoof of espionage tropes during a period of industry challenges. He expanded his producing credits with Last Survivors (2021), where he starred as Jake, the son of a survivalist father, blending his acting with behind-the-scenes oversight to shape the film's tense father-son dynamics in a ravaged world.[1] In recent years, Van Acker has continued to balance acting and producing, highlighted by his lead role as Apollo, an amnesiac astronaut, in the 2025 sci-fi thriller Orion, directed by Jaco Bouwer and co-starring Andrew McCarthy as a NASA interrogator and Debby Ryan.[20] Production wrapped in 2024, with the film premiering on October 1, 2025, to critical discussion of its themes on truth-seeking and deception in a misinformation-saturated society.[2][21] For his performance in Orion, Van Acker won Best Actor (tied) at the 2025 FilmQuest Festival Awards, underscoring his evolving presence in genre filmmaking.[22] This dual focus on acting and producing reflects Van Acker's career evolution, enabling him to champion indie stories while leveraging his established profile from earlier roles to secure financing and distribution for ambitious projects.[23]Filmography
