Elkan Baggott
Elkan Baggott (born 23 October 2002) is an Indonesian professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for EFL Championship club Ipswich Town.[1] Born in Bangkok, Thailand, to an Indonesian mother and English father, he relocated to England as a child and joined the Ipswich Town academy in 2016 and signed a two-year scholarship with the club in 2019. Baggott signed his first professional contract with the club in January 2021, made his senior debut in the EFL Trophy against Gillingham in October 2020, and became the first Indonesian to appear in English professional football with his league debut against Rotherham United on 16 April 2022.[2][3] Having opted for Indonesian citizenship in November 2021, Baggott debuted for the Indonesia national team in a friendly against Afghanistan that same month and scored his first international goal in a 5–1 AFF Championship group stage victory over Laos on 12 December 2021.[1][4][2] He has since earned 24 caps, including appearances at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.[5] To build experience, Baggott has been loaned out to several EFL clubs, including Gillingham in League Two during the 2022–23 season (where he made 19 appearances), Cheltenham Town in League One for the second half of that campaign, and Blackpool in League One in 2024.[6][7] In August 2025, the 1.96 m (6 ft 5 in) defender extended his Ipswich contract until the summer of 2028, securing his long-term future at Portman Road.[8][1]Background
Early life
Elkan William Tio Baggott was born on 23 October 2002 in Bangkok, Thailand, to an Indonesian mother and an English father.[1][9] His family led an expatriate lifestyle in Southeast Asia, which kept them based in Thailand during his early childhood. After moving to Indonesia, Baggott attended the British International School in Jakarta, where he captained the school football team and first developed a passion for the sport. Baggott's multicultural heritage—stemming from his Indonesian maternal roots and English paternal lineage—shaped his diverse upbringing.[9][10] In 2011, seeking enhanced educational and sporting prospects, Baggott's family relocated to England, settling in the Colchester area of Essex. This move marked the end of his initial years in Asia and the beginning of his integration into British society, while preserving strong ties to his Indonesian heritage through family connections.[9][11]Youth development
In 2011, at the age of nine, Baggott and his family relocated from Indonesia to England, settling in the Colchester area near Ipswich.[12][11][13] Upon arriving, Baggott attended St Benedict's Catholic College in Colchester, where he balanced his formal education with growing involvement in football activities.[13][14] Following his relocation to England, his organized football experiences came through grassroots clubs in East Anglia, spanning approximately four years from around age nine to thirteen, during which he developed his skills as a centre-back.[15][11] At age fourteen, Baggott was scouted as a standout talent during local trials and recommended to Ipswich Town's academy by UK scout Jon Willis, leading to successful trials and his entry into the club's youth system in 2016.[16][12] Within the Ipswich Town academy, Baggott progressed rapidly through the age groups, impressing coaches with his physical presence and defensive abilities, and making appearances for the U18 team by 2019, including scoring in a Professional Development League match against Cardiff City.[17][15]Club career
Ipswich Town academy and debut
Baggott joined the Ipswich Town academy in 2016 at the age of 14, progressing through the youth ranks as a promising centre-back. In 2019, at age 16, he signed a two-year scholarship deal with the club, one of 13 young players awarded contracts that year. Throughout his academy tenure, Baggott established himself in the U18 and U23 squads, where he was valued for his commanding physical attributes, including a height of 1.96 metres that aided his aerial dominance and defensive positioning. He contributed to notable youth campaigns, such as Ipswich's run to the 2021 FA Youth Cup semi-finals, where he featured prominently in the U18 team's matches against strong opposition like Liverpool. On 28 January 2021, midway through his scholarship, Baggott secured his first professional contract, committing to the club until summer 2023 with an option for an additional year. Baggott's senior breakthrough came earlier than expected, with his debut on 6 October 2020 in the EFL Trophy group stage against Gillingham; he started at centre-back in a 2-0 home win at Portman Road, partnering Luke Woolfenden in defence. His first league outing followed on 16 April 2022, substituting into an EFL League One match away to Rotherham United, which marked him as the first Indonesian player to appear in an English professional league fixture. Despite these milestones, Baggott's first-team opportunities at Ipswich remained limited, accumulating around seven senior appearances by the end of 2023 due to intense competition in the defensive unit and periods spent on loan elsewhere.Loan to King's Lynn Town
In March 2021, at the age of 18, Elkan Baggott joined National League club King's Lynn Town on a youth loan from Ipswich Town until the end of the 2020–21 season, providing him with his first taste of senior men's football outside the professional leagues. The move was intended to build his experience as a central defender, following his recent academy progress and a brief senior debut for Ipswich earlier that season. Baggott made an immediate impact, debuting in a 3–0 away defeat to Altrincham on 23 March 2021, where he started and played the full 90 minutes. Over the course of the loan, he featured in seven matches, all as starts, accumulating 630 minutes in the National League. Notable outings included a 1–1 draw at Aldershot Town on 20 April, where he helped maintain defensive shape in a hard-fought contest, and a 2–0 home victory over Altrincham on 5 April, contributing to a rare clean sheet for the struggling side amid their relegation battle. Throughout his time at King's Lynn, Baggott adapted quickly to the physical demands of non-league football, impressing with solid defensive positioning and tackles that aided the team's rearguard efforts despite their overall poor form. The loan concluded at the end of the season in May 2021, coinciding with King's Lynn's relegation to the National League North after finishing bottom of the table with just 31 points from 42 matches.Loan to Gillingham
On 8 July 2022, Elkan Baggott joined EFL League Two club Gillingham on a season-long loan from Ipswich Town. The move provided the 19-year-old centre-back with his first extended opportunity in professional league football, following brief senior appearances for Ipswich and a short non-league loan the previous year. Baggott made an immediate impact, featuring in Gillingham's opening match of the 2022–23 season—a 2–0 away defeat to AFC Wimbledon on 30 July 2022—where he started alongside Max Ehmer in central defence. Over the first half of the campaign, he accumulated 19 appearances in League Two, starting 17 and logging 1,509 minutes on the pitch. His contributions included two goals: the first came on 15 October 2022, when he rose highest to head in a late equaliser during a 1–1 home draw with league leaders Stevenage, a performance that saw him earn widespread praise for his aerial dominance and composure. Baggott's second strike arrived a week later, again via header, securing a point in a 1–1 draw against Barrow on 22 October 2022. Throughout his stint, Baggott established himself as a key figure in Gillingham's backline, often partnering with club captain Max Ehmer to provide solidity amid a challenging season for the team, which languished near the relegation zone. His physical presence at 6 ft 5 in (1.96 m) proved particularly effective in set-piece situations, contributing to defensive organisation that limited opponents' chances in several matches. In total, across all competitions, he made 29 appearances and scored three goals, including one in the EFL Cup. Baggott's consistent form prompted Ipswich Town to recall him on 19 January 2023, allowing him to pursue further development at a higher level. Reflecting on the loan later, Baggott credited the experience with enhancing his physicality and tactical awareness, stating it helped him "play a lot of games... playing well" and emerge as a more complete defender.Loan to Cheltenham Town
In January 2023, Elkan Baggott was recalled from his loan at Gillingham and joined EFL League One side Cheltenham Town on a loan deal until the end of the 2022–23 season, aiming to build on his previous League Two experience. Baggott featured in 1 League One match for the Robins, starting in a 0–4 home defeat to Barnsley on 18 February 2023. His integration was disrupted by an injury sustained shortly after, which sidelined him for several weeks and ultimately limited his overall involvement; he did not return to the matchday squad before the end of the loan. Despite the team's challenging campaign—finishing 22nd and surviving relegation by a narrow margin—Baggott's brief outing demonstrated defensive solidity, including winning aerial duels to help shore up the backline. The loan concluded in May 2023, allowing the 20-year-old to gain initial exposure to higher-division physicality and tactical demands despite the injury interruption.Loan to Bristol Rovers
On 1 February 2024, Elkan Baggott joined EFL League One club Bristol Rovers on a loan from Ipswich Town until the end of the 2023–24 season, aiming to gain regular first-team experience following a brief and injury-interrupted spell at Cheltenham Town earlier that year. He made his debut three days later as a substitute in a 2–1 home win over Oxford United, entering in the 75th minute. Baggott quickly became a key part of the Rovers defense, making 14 appearances in League One, with 12 starts, totaling 1,036 minutes played. He scored once, heading in the third goal during a 3–1 victory against former loan club Cheltenham Town on 13 April 2024, and provided one assist, contributing to the team's efforts in a crucial win that aided their relegation battle. His performances were marked by strong defensive metrics, including an 86% pass accuracy rate across his outings and success in duels, particularly aerial challenges where he won a notable proportion in key matches. Baggott formed solid partnerships, often alongside defenders like Joshua Earl, helping stabilize the backline during a period when Rovers were pushing for survival, ultimately finishing 19th and avoiding relegation. Manager Matt Taylor praised Baggott as an "outstanding" performer in the latter stages of the loan, noting his growth after an initial adaptation phase, with the 21-year-old receiving a 7/10 rating in end-of-season reviews for his composure and contributions to the team's late-season form. The loan ended in May 2024 upon the conclusion of the season, with Baggott returning to Ipswich Town having gained valuable minutes in a competitive environment.Loan to Blackpool
On 5 August 2024, Elkan Baggott joined EFL League One club Blackpool on a season-long loan from Ipswich Town, aiming to gain further experience in the third tier at the age of 21. The move was part of his ongoing development following prior loans at clubs like Bristol Rovers, where he had adapted to competitive League One environments. Baggott made his debut for Blackpool on 13 August 2024, starting in a 4–0 victory over Burton Albion in the first round of the EFL Cup. Throughout the 2024–25 season, he featured in 18 League One matches, with 15 starts and 1,331 minutes played, primarily as a centre-back. He contributed 1 assist and helped secure 5 clean sheets, while the team conceded 21 goals during his appearances, demonstrating solid defensive contributions. Key moments included a man-of-the-match performance on 11 February 2025 against Mansfield Town in a home league draw, where Baggott played the full 90 minutes and contributed to a clean sheet. His consistent displays earned recognition off the pitch as well, culminating in the 2024/25 Community Champion award at Blackpool's end-of-season honors on 28 April 2025, highlighting his positive impact on the local community.[18][19] The loan concluded at the end of the 2024–25 season in May 2025, with Baggott returning to Ipswich Town after a stint that showcased his growth in leadership and reliability as a young defender.Return to Ipswich Town
Following the conclusion of his season-long loan at Blackpool in June 2025, Baggott returned to Ipswich Town's first-team squad ahead of the 2025–26 campaign. In August 2025, Baggott signed a new contract extension with Ipswich Town, committing his future to the club until the summer of 2028. The deal rewards his development and loan experiences, positioning him as a potential long-term option in the centre-back position. He featured in pre-season matches, gaining valuable minutes under manager Kieran McKenna to aid his integration into the senior setup. By November 2025, Baggott had made two appearances in the early stages of the 2025–26 EFL Championship season, primarily as a substitute, while competing for starting spots alongside established defenders like Luke Woolfenden and Cameron Burgess. His limited but promising involvement reflects a gradual build-up in the first team, with careful management of his injury history from previous loans to ensure sustained fitness.[20] Baggott's market value stands at approximately €200,000 to €600,000 as of late 2025, underscoring his potential as a homegrown talent amid Ipswich's push for stability in the Championship. His versatility and international experience with Indonesia position him for further opportunities, provided he maintains consistency in training and match fitness.[1][21][22]International career
Youth international career
Baggott became eligible to represent Indonesia at youth international level through his Indonesian mother, despite having developed in the English youth system and being eligible for England. He received his initial call-up to the Indonesia U19 squad in October 2020 for a training camp in Croatia under coach Shin Tae-yong, marking his commitment to the Southeast Asian nation over potential opportunities with England.[4][11][23] Baggott made his debut for the Indonesia U19 team on 11 October 2020, starting in a friendly match against North Macedonia U19 at Stadion NK Junak Sinj in Split, Croatia, which Indonesia won 4-1. The 17-year-old centre-back delivered a strong performance in defence, contributing to a clean sheet in the second half and earning praise for his composure and physical presence.[24][25][26] Over the following months, Baggott earned several caps at U19 level through additional friendlies and training engagements, showcasing his aerial strength and defensive reliability in developmental matches. His height of 1.96 metres allowed him to dominate set pieces and duels, helping solidify Indonesia's backline during key outings. By late 2021, his rapid progress led to a transition into the senior national team setup.[1][27]Senior international career
Baggott, eligible to represent England through his father, Thailand through his birth there, and Indonesia through his mother, opted to play for Indonesia and acquired citizenship on 9 November 2021.[28] He made his senior international debut for the team four days later, on 16 November 2021, in a friendly match against Afghanistan in Antalya, Turkey, where he played 70 minutes before being substituted in a 1-0 defeat.[14] His competitive debut followed on 12 December 2021, starting in Indonesia's 5-1 group stage victory over Laos at the AFF Championship in Singapore.[29] During the 2021 AFF Championship, Baggott scored his first international goal on 19 December, heading in the fourth in a 4-1 win against Malaysia that advanced Indonesia to the semifinals.[30] His second goal came on 14 June 2022, again via header, in a 7-0 rout of Nepal during the second round of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification, helping secure a vital away win.[31] Baggott featured in subsequent World Cup qualifiers, including matches against Kuwait, Jordan, and the Philippines in 2023, contributing to Indonesia's qualification for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. At the 2023 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar, Baggott started all four matches as Indonesia reached the round of 16.[4] A notable performance came in the 4-0 knockout loss to Australia on 28 January, where he played the full 90 minutes, made several clearances, but unfortunately deflected a cross into his own net for the opener.[32] As of November 2025, Baggott has earned 24 caps and scored 2 goals for Indonesia, often deployed as a centre-back for his aerial strength and defensive organization.[5] He continued to receive call-ups for 2026 World Cup qualifiers into 2025, though club commitments occasionally limited his involvement, including no selection for the March 2025 matches.[31]Career statistics
