Emiru
Emiru, whose real name is Emily Schunk, is an American Twitch streamer, YouTuber, cosplayer, and content creator born on January 3, 1998, in Wichita, Kansas.[1] She began her streaming career in late 2015 during high school, initially focusing on League of Legends as a Diamond-ranked player, and has since evolved into a variety streamer known for elite gameplay across multiple genres, engaging cosplay, podcasts, event hosting, and interactive "Just Chatting" sessions that have built a dedicated community of 1.93 million Twitch followers as of November 2025.[2][3][1] Schunk's professional milestones include joining Cloud9 as a content creator in August 2020 and becoming a co-owner of the streaming organization One True King (OTK) on January 31, 2023, solidifying her influence in the gaming and esports industry.[1] Her creative contributions extend to inspiring the design of the League of Legends champion Gwen in 2021, reflecting her impact on game development through fan engagement.[1] As one of the top female creators on Twitch, she emphasizes viewer-first content that blends high-skill gaming with personal storytelling and community interaction, often collaborating with other prominent streamers.[2] In October 2025, Schunk was allegedly assaulted by a fan during a meet-and-greet at TwitchCon in San Diego, an incident that drew widespread attention to safety concerns for content creators at live events, prompted an apology from Twitch CEO Dan Clancy for the platform's response, and led to Twitch agreeing to donate $100,000 to a violence prevention charity.[4][5][6] Despite maintaining privacy around her current personal life following a past relationship with fellow streamer Dyrus from 2016 to 2020, Schunk continues to captivate millions through her multifaceted online presence.[1]Early life
Upbringing
Emiru, whose real name is Emily Schunk, was born on January 3, 1998, in Wichita, Kansas.[7][8] She is of mixed ethnic heritage, with a German-American father and a Chinese mother.[7][8] Emiru was raised in a family where her father worked as an entrepreneur and her mother as a lawyer, both maintaining demanding professional lives.[7][8] She grew up alongside her brother, Nicolas.[7][8] During her childhood in Wichita, the tight schedules of her parents often left Emiru seeking independent activities, which influenced her early interest in video games as a source of comfort and entertainment.[7][8]Education and early interests
Emiru, born Emily Beth Schunk, grew up in Wichita, Kansas, where she attended local public schools and graduated from high school in 2016.[9] During her teenage years, she developed a strong interest in video games, beginning with childhood play on Nintendo 64 and GameCube consoles, which laid the foundation for her later online pursuits.[10] At age 15, in 2013, Schunk created her self-titled YouTube channel under the alias Emiru, marking her initial foray into content creation as a hobby.[11] Her passion for gaming deepened during high school, where she began streaming sessions of League of Legends in 2015, sharing gameplay with a small community of fellow players and viewers.[2] Concurrently, she explored cosplay as an extension of her artistic interests, experimenting with costumes inspired by anime and video game characters starting in middle school and continuing into her high school years.[10] These early hobbies in gaming and cosplay not only provided creative outlets but also honed skills in community engagement and performance that would influence her subsequent career path.[12]Career
Streaming beginnings
Emiru created her Twitch channel on May 14, 2015, and began streaming regularly in late 2015 while still attending high school, with a primary focus on League of Legends gameplay.[13][1] Her early streams emphasized competitive play and casual commentary, drawing an initial audience from the League of Legends community through her approachable style and in-game proficiency.[14] In 2016, Emiru expanded her online presence by starting to upload videos to her self-titled YouTube channel, featuring edited League of Legends clips alongside emerging cosplay content to engage viewers beyond live sessions.[15][16] This dual-platform approach allowed her to build a dedicated following by showcasing both her gaming skills and creative interests, with YouTube serving as a repository for highlights that encouraged cross-traffic to Twitch. Throughout the late 2010s, Emiru's popularity steadily increased via her core League of Legends streams combined with cosplay integrations, which added visual flair and thematic depth to her broadcasts, solidifying her niche at the intersection of esports and cosplay.[14][17] Key early milestones included consistent viewer retention during themed cosplay sessions and gradual follower accumulation, reflecting an evolution in content style toward more interactive and personality-driven formats by 2019.[3]Organizational affiliations
Emiru joined the esports organization Cloud9 as a full-time streamer and content creator on August 28, 2020.[18] This affiliation positioned her alongside established figures like former League of Legends player Zachary "Sneaky" Scuderi, fostering opportunities for collaborative content focused on gaming and community engagement.[19] Through Cloud9, she participated in team-sponsored challenges, such as the AIM Lab accuracy competition alongside creators like Christian "IWD" Rivera and Evan "Penguinz0" Fong, which highlighted her skills in League of Legends and expanded her reach within the esports ecosystem.[20] On January 2, 2022, Emiru transitioned to One True King (OTK), an Austin-based media organization, as its newest content creator and the first female member.[21] Her integration into OTK enabled participation in collective streams and events, including the introductory "OTK EMIRU!" video series that showcased her alongside co-founders like Zack "Asmongold" Hoyt and Matthew "Mizkif" Rinaudo, thereby amplifying her visibility through the group's established audience.[22] These collaborations diversified her content beyond solo streaming, incorporating variety gaming sessions and organizational promotions that strengthened her presence in the broader streaming community.[23] Emiru advanced to co-owner of OTK on January 31, 2023, during the organization's shareholder meeting.[24] In this elevated role, she contributed to strategic decisions on content initiatives, such as efforts to enhance visibility for underrepresented creators, while continuing to engage in group activities like OTK Game Nights.[25] This ownership stake deepened her involvement in OTK's operations, leading to sustained collaborations that integrated her cosplay and gaming expertise with the organization's high-impact events, ultimately elevating her professional profile in esports media.[26]Additional projects
In April 2021, Riot Games artist Jeremy Anninos confirmed that Emiru's cosplay and makeup looks inspired the design of the League of Legends champion Gwen, using her images as reference during development. Gwen was released on April 15, 2021.[27] In February 2023, Emiru co-launched the Steak & Eggs podcast alongside streamers Asmongold and Tectone, with the first episode airing on February 17.[28] The show focuses on discussions of gaming, anime, and pop culture, providing a platform for Emiru to engage audiences through long-form audio content outside her traditional live streams.[29] This venture has allowed her to diversify her content creation, fostering deeper connections with fans interested in broader entertainment topics and contributing to her growth as a multimedia personality.[30] In August 2025, Emiru joined Red Bull as an official athlete, announced on August 16 via her social media channels.[31] This sponsorship aligns her with the brand's esports and gaming initiatives, positioning her alongside other professional gamers and enabling participation in Red Bull events such as the Flugtag competition.[2] The partnership has broadened her visibility in the competitive gaming ecosystem, enhancing her professional profile beyond streaming by associating her with a globally recognized energy drink brand that supports athletic endeavors in digital sports.[32] As of November 3, 2025, Emiru's platforms reflect significant audience growth, with 1.9 million followers on Twitch, 1.5 million subscribers on YouTube, and over 905 million total YouTube views.[33][34] These metrics underscore the expanded reach of her brand through the podcast and sponsorships, which have amplified her presence in non-streaming media and attracted sponsorship opportunities that extend her influence into lifestyle and esports marketing.[2]Personal life
Relationships
Emiru was previously in a romantic relationship with retired League of Legends professional player Marcus "Dyrus" Hill from 2016 to 2020. The couple met at a cosplay event and were open about their relationship online, but parted ways amicably, with Dyrus later discussing the breakup in a 2021 vlog.[35][36] Emiru was in a long-term romantic relationship with fellow Twitch streamer Mizkif (Matthew Rinaudo), which lasted several years and was characterized by close integration with their professional lives. The couple began dating around early 2022, shortly after Emiru moved into the OTK content house co-founded by Mizkif in Austin, Texas.[37] Although they never publicly confirmed the relationship during its duration, it fueled widespread speculation among fans due to their frequent on-camera chemistry and shared living situation.[38] Throughout their partnership, Emiru and Mizkif regularly collaborated on streams and content creation, often featuring joint gameplay sessions, challenges, and lifestyle videos that highlighted their dynamic as a couple. These appearances not only boosted their individual viewership but also shaped public perceptions of Emiru as part of the OTK collective, emphasizing camaraderie within the streaming ecosystem. For instance, they co-hosted popular Twitch streams involving multiplayer games and community events, blending personal rapport with professional output.[39][40] The relationship concluded quietly in early 2025, marking the end of their shared domestic and collaborative phase. Emiru first publicly acknowledged the partnership and breakup during a live stream on October 25, 2025, while also detailing serious allegations of abuse against Mizkif, providing context for fans on how the romance had intertwined with her career trajectory in the streaming world (see Incidents and controversies).[41][42]Incidents and controversies
On March 2, 2025, during the "Sis-a-thon" livestream event at the Santa Monica Pier in California, Emiru, along with fellow streamers Valkyrae and Cinna, encountered a stalker who approached the group, requested Emiru's phone number, and followed them after being refused. The individual later charged at them aggressively while yelling threats, including "I’ll kill you right now," prompting security to intervene and the stream to end abruptly. No arrests were reported from the incident, but it heightened awareness of harassment risks for female streamers during public events.[43] In October 2025, at TwitchCon in San Diego, Emiru was sexually assaulted during a meet-and-greet session when a man bypassed barriers, grabbed her face, and attempted to forcibly kiss her; her personal security guard intervened to stop the attack. The incident, captured on video and widely shared, drew immediate backlash against Twitch for inadequate security measures and a delayed response, including initial reluctance to provide the assailant's name to San Diego police. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy publicly apologized, acknowledging failures in both prevention and follow-up communication, and announced a review of event safety protocols along with a donation to organizations combating sexual violence. Emiru announced that this would be her last TwitchCon appearance.[44][45][46] On October 25, 2025, Emiru, the ex-partner of streamer Mizkif, went live on Twitch to accuse him of psychological and domestic abuse, stalking, harassment, sexual assault—including an incident where he allegedly kissed her while she was sobbing and aggressively touched her—and threats of blackmail during their relationship. Mizkif denied the allegations and, on November 3, filed a defamation lawsuit in Texas District Court against Emiru and streamer Asmongold, claiming the accusations were false and part of a coordinated effort that caused him significant financial losses, including over $896,000 in equity and fees. The lawsuit remains ongoing as of November 2025.[47] These events have amplified discussions on streamer safety, particularly for women in the industry, leading to calls for enhanced security at live events and better platform accountability. Following the Sis-a-thon incident, several streamers, including xQc and Pokimane, publicly advocated for increased personal protection during IRL streams. The TwitchCon assault prompted widespread criticism from creators like FanFan, who questioned assigned security measures, and contributed to broader industry scrutiny of harassment protocols at conventions.[48][49]Awards and nominations
Streamer Awards
Emiru has received several nominations at major streaming award ceremonies, recognizing her contributions to live content creation on platforms like Twitch. The Streamer Awards, an annual event organized by fellow streamer QTCinderella, celebrates achievements across various gaming and content categories through community-driven nominations and public voting. Similarly, the Streamy Awards honor excellence in online video and streaming, with categories evaluated by industry experts and fan input. These recognitions underscore Emiru's evolution from focused gaming streams to diverse, engaging content that has built a substantial following.[50] In the 2022 edition of The Streamer Awards (covering 2021 content), Emiru was nominated for Best League of Legends Streamer, a category honoring creators who deliver compelling gameplay and commentary in the multiplayer online battle arena genre. This nomination highlighted her early career emphasis on League of Legends, where she cultivated a dedicated audience through skilled play and interactive sessions, though the award was ultimately won by loltyler1.[51][52] Emiru's broader streaming persona, characterized by cosplay, variety chats, and community events, earned her a nomination for Streamer of the Year at the 13th Annual Streamy Awards in 2023. This top-tier category acknowledges overall impact, innovation, and audience engagement in the streaming industry, with nominees selected from thousands of submissions; Kai Cenat took home the win. The recognition reflected her growing influence, as her content shifted toward inclusive, creative formats that resonated widely and contributed to her status as one of Twitch's top female streamers by viewership metrics.[53][54] At the 2024 Streamer Awards, Emiru was nominated for Streamer of the Year and Best Just Chatting Streamer, positioning her among elite creators such as Kai Cenat and IShowSpeed. The nominations sparked discussions on gender representation in major categories, with QTCinderella noting it was based on strong community support and performance data from the prior year. Emiru's inclusion emphasized her role in elevating interactive, personality-driven streaming, though she opted not to attend the ceremony amid the surrounding debates.[52][55][56] On November 16, 2025, Emiru was nominated for the Sapphire Award (Best Female/Marginalized Gender Streamer of the Year) at the 2025 Streamer Awards, recognizing her achievements in an industry where top streamers are predominantly male. The award ceremony is scheduled for later in 2025, with the outcome pending as of November 17, 2025.
