Fergus Greene
Fergus Greene (born 20 December 1997) is an Australian rules footballer and coach.[1] He played 16 games in the Australian Football League (AFL), debuting for the Western Bulldogs in 2018 before joining Hawthorn in 2023.[2] As of 2025, Greene plays as a key forward for the Sandhurst Football Club in the Bendigo Football Netball League (BFNL) and has been appointed co-coach for the 2026 season alongside Bryce Curnow.[3] Greene began his senior career after being selected by the Western Bulldogs with their fourth pick (70th overall) in the 2016 AFL National Draft, after playing five games for the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup.[4] He made his AFL debut in round 19 of the 2018 season against Port Adelaide, going on to play five games that year and kicking a goal in each.[4] However, Greene did not feature at AFL level in 2019 or 2020 and was delisted by the Bulldogs at the end of the 2020 season.[5] After his delisting, Greene joined the Box Hill Hawks in the Victorian Football League (VFL), Hawthorn's affiliate team, where he developed into a prolific goalkicker.[6] In 2022, he led the Hawks' goalkicking tally with 53 goals in 17 games, earning a one-year AFL contract with Hawthorn as a delisted free agent ahead of the 2023 season.[7] During his time with the Hawks, Greene played 11 AFL games and kicked 15 goals, primarily as a forward, before being delisted again at the conclusion of the 2023 season.[8] Greene returned to his junior club Sandhurst in the BFNL following his AFL delisting, where he quickly re-established himself as a dominant force.[9] In 2024, he won the Ron Best Medal as the league's leading goalkicker with 80 goals and contributed to Sandhurst's premiership success.[10] The following year, despite an interrupted season, Greene was named full forward in the 2025 BFNL Team of the Year[11] and served as assistant coach and co-captain before his promotion to co-coach.[12]Early life
Birth and family
Fergus Greene was born on 20 December 1997. He grew up in the regional city of Bendigo, immersed in a community where Australian rules football holds significant cultural importance, shaping early influences on his personal development.[13] Greene is the son of Chris Greene, a prominent figure in local football as a former player and legend of the Sandhurst Football Netball Club, and Anne Hartney, whose family shares a longstanding association with the same club.[14] His familial background further connects to the sport through his uncle, Brendan Hartney, a former Carlton Football Club player who appeared in 32 senior Victorian Football League (VFL) games during the 1980s.[15] These ties underscore the deep-rooted football heritage within Greene's immediate family and the Bendigo community.[13]Education and junior development
Greene completed his secondary education at Catholic College Bendigo, where he obtained his Victorian Certificate of Education between 2011 and 2016.[16] During his time there, he excelled in school football, notably kicking four goals in a dominant performance at centre half-forward against Bendigo Senior Secondary College.[17] Greene developed his football skills at the junior level with the Sandhurst Dragons in Bendigo's local competitions, playing under-18s football for the club that has produced notable AFL talents such as Joel Selwood and Nick Dal Santo.[18] His family's involvement in the sport, with multiple relatives having played at local levels, provided early encouragement for his passion.[19] In 2015, Greene suffered a navicular bone injury that sidelined him for the entire season, significantly hindering his early progression and draft prospects.[19] Following a prolonged recovery, he returned strongly in 2016, dominating school matches for Catholic College Bendigo before earning a late-season invitation to the Bendigo Pioneers.[17] There, he played five games in the TAC Cup (now known as the NAB League), showcasing his forward abilities by kicking multiple goals, including three in a match against Gippsland Power, which caught the attention of scouts.[20][21]Football career
Draft and Western Bulldogs (2017–2020)
Greene was selected by the Western Bulldogs with the club's fourth pick, number 70 overall, in the 2016 AFL National Draft from the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup.[22] He joined the senior list ahead of the 2017 season and began his professional career playing for the club's VFL affiliate, Footscray, where he featured in multiple matches while developing his skills.[23] Greene made his AFL debut on 29 July 2018 in Round 19 against Port Adelaide at Eureka Stadium in Ballarat.[24] He went on to play the final five games of the 2018 season, scoring one goal in each appearance for a total of five goals.[2] Greene did not feature in any further AFL matches during the 2019 or 2020 seasons, instead continuing his development in the VFL with Footscray.[6] He was delisted by the Western Bulldogs at the conclusion of the 2020 season, having played a total of five AFL games and kicked five goals for the club.[25]Box Hill Hawks (2021–2022)
Following his delisting from the Western Bulldogs at the end of the 2020 season, Fergus Greene signed with the Box Hill Hawks, Hawthorn's VFL affiliate club, ahead of the 2021 campaign.[26] In the shortened 2021 VFL season, impacted by COVID-19 restrictions, Greene emerged as a key forward for Box Hill, booting 30 goals across nine games.[27] His prolific scoring rate earned him the club's leading goalkicker award, the Paul Bolton Trophy.[28] Greene built on this form in 2022, delivering a career-best performance with 53 goals in 17 VFL matches, again claiming Box Hill's leading goalkicker honours and finishing as runner-up in the league-wide Frosty Miller Medal race.[6] This season solidified his role as the Hawks' primary target inside 50, where his contested marking and conversion accuracy became hallmarks of his game.[29] Greene's two-year stint at Box Hill transformed him into a consistent goal-scoring threat at the state league level, amassing 83 goals overall and paving the way for his delisted free agency signing with Hawthorn ahead of the 2023 AFL season.[7]Hawthorn (2023)
After being delisted by the Western Bulldogs, Fergus Greene signed with Hawthorn as a delisted free agent on a one-year contract for the 2023 season, following a strong performance at Box Hill in the VFL where he kicked 53 goals and finished as the competition's second-leading goalkicker.[6][30] Greene featured in 11 AFL matches for Hawthorn during 2023, scoring 15 goals as a key forward option in a rebuilding Hawks side under coach Sam Mitchell.[2] His opportunities at senior level were bolstered by consistent VFL form, where he continued to demonstrate strong marking and goal-kicking ability, earning recalls after standout reserves performances.[31] Notable contributions included his debut goal against Essendon in Round 1, which helped spark Hawthorn's first score in a tight opening match.[32] He kicked multiple goals in several games, such as three against Greater Western Sydney in Round 5—accompanied by seven marks and two goal assists—and another three versus Adelaide in Round 6, showcasing his contested marking and pressure inside 50.[2] Additional hauls of two goals came against North Melbourne (Round 3), Geelong (Round 4), Carlton (Round 16), and Greater Western Sydney again (Round 17), providing valuable scoring threat during Hawthorn's developmental campaign.[2] At the conclusion of the 2023 season, Hawthorn delisted Greene, along with Lachlan Bramble and Ned Long, as part of list management following the trade period.[33] This marked the end of his second stint in the AFL to date.[9]Sandhurst Dragons (2024–present)
Following his delisting by Hawthorn at the end of the 2023 season, Fergus Greene returned to his junior club, the Sandhurst Dragons, signing with the team in the Bendigo Football Netball League (BFNL) for 2024.[9][34] In the 2024 season, Greene established himself as a key forward for Sandhurst, booting multiple goals throughout the campaign, including his first of the year in round three and several against Castlemaine in round nine.[35][36] His contributions were pivotal in Sandhurst's historic BFNL premiership victory—the club's first in 163 years—highlighted by goals in the grand final win over Gisborne by four points (68-64) on September 21.[37][38][39] Greene continued as a star forward in 2025, serving as co-captain alongside Cooper Smith and earning selection as vice-captain for Bendigo's senior interleague side.[40][41] Despite rumors in late 2024 of interest from Victorian Football League (VFL) clubs prompting a potential move to Melbourne, Greene remained with Sandhurst through the season, kicking 38 goals in 10 games despite an interrupted campaign due to injury.[42] He was named full forward in the 2025 BFNL Team of the Year.[11] In the grand final on September 20 against Eaglehawk, he kicked the opening goal with a snap over his shoulder from 15 meters after pouncing on his own spoil, along with a notable juggling mark, though Sandhurst fell short in a 10-point loss (94-84).[43][44][45] Following the defeat, Greene transitioned to co-coach for the 2026 season alongside Bryce Curnow while focusing on club improvements.[46][3]Playing statistics
