Giovanni Pernice (born 5 September 1990) is an Italian professional Latin dancer and choreographer, recognized for his competitive achievements and television appearances, particularly as a dancer on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing from 2015 to 2023.[1][2]Born in Palermo, Sicily, Pernice began training in dance as a child and relocated to Bologna at age 14 to focus on professional development, eventually competing internationally in Latin ballroom events. His early career highlight was winning the Italian Open Latin Dance Championship in 2012, establishing him as a top-tier competitor before transitioning to television.[1][3]On Strictly Come Dancing, Pernice partnered with celebrities including Debbie McGee, reaching the final in 2017, and achieved his greatest success by winning the Glitterball Trophy in 2021 with Rose Ayling-Ellis, the first deaf contestant to claim victory. He reached the final four times overall, demonstrating consistent high performance amid the show's competitive format. Beyond the BBC series, Pernice has pursued solo stage tours such as Born to Win and debuted on Italy's version of Strictly in 2024, scoring highly in his initial appearance.[4][5][6]Pernice's tenure ended amid controversy following complaints from 2023 partner Amanda Abbington regarding his rehearsal conduct; a BBC investigation in 2024 upheld some allegations of verbal bullying and harassment among 16 total claims but dismissed those involving physical aggression, prompting an apology to Abbington for procedural shortcomings while Pernice maintained his approach was demanding yet non-abusive. He was not retained for the 2024 series but has continued performing independently.[7][8][9]
Early life
Childhood and family background
Giovanni Pernice was born on 5 September 1990 in Palermo, Sicily, to parents Piero, a policeman, and Rosalba.[10][11] He grew up with his older sister Angela in a modest fourth-floor apartment in the city, within a close-knit family that emphasized structure and familial duty amid everyday economic constraints typical of working-class Sicilian households.[12][10]Pernice has recalled his father instilling discipline through his profession's demands, while his mother's homemaking role reinforced perseverance in the face of limited resources, contributing to a household environment where personal effort was prioritized over material excess.[11] This setting, marked by reports of a challenging early school experience where he was known as a mischievous child, fostered the resilience that later underpinned his professional rigor, without reliance on external privileges.[13] No verified accounts detail alternative pursuits like sports during this period, though the family's traditional values centered on self-reliance amid such modest conditions.[14]
Introduction to dance
Giovanni Pernice first encountered dance at the age of seven in Sicily, where he began training locally in basic techniques.[15] This early exposure laid the groundwork for his development, emphasizing Latin styles through initial lessons that relied on personal drive rather than formal structure.[16]By age 14, Pernice had demonstrated sufficient aptitude to secure a spot at a renowned dance academy in Bologna, prompting his relocation from Sicily to pursue intensive training independently.[15] Living on his own from that point, he engaged in rigorous, often unsupervised practice sessions that built core proficiency in ballroom and Latin disciplines, highlighting a progression driven by empirical repetition and self-reliance over external advantages.[14]At the Bologna academy, foundational instruction focused on technical precision and endurance, with daily regimens extending up to 12 hours, fostering skills through disciplined immersion rather than named individual mentorships.[17] This phase marked a shift from casual local beginnings to structured yet demanding preparation, underscoring Pernice's innate responsiveness to practice as the primary causal factor in his early advancement.[16]
Pre-television career
Competitive dancing achievements
Pernice specialized in Latin dance styles during his competitive career, partnering primarily with Erika Attisano from February 2011 to June 2014.[18] In 2011, the pair achieved multiple victories in the Adult category's Open Rising Stars Latin events under World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) auspices, including first-place finishes on November 6 in Pieve di Cento, Italy; October 14 in Ancona, Italy; May 1 in Verona, Italy; and April 23 in Sant Cugat del Vallès, Spain.[18] They also won the Open Under 21 Latin competition on May 27 in San Marino and placed second on July 9 in Alassio, Italy, demonstrating rapid progression from youth to adult professional levels.[18]By 2012, Pernice and Attisano earned consistent top placements in international opens, such as fifth in the International Open Latin in Luxembourg in May.[18] That year marked Pernice's pinnacle national achievement, winning the Italian Open Latin Dance Championship.[1][3] He later partnered with Alexandra Koldan from 2014 to 2015, continuing to compete in WDSF-sanctioned Latin events as he advanced toward professional elite status.[19] These results quantified his success through at least five Rising Stars titles in 2011 alone and sustained high rankings in European circuits.[18]
Dance championships and records
Pernice won the Italian Open Latin Championship in 2012, specializing in Latin ballroom styles such as jive, samba, cha-cha-cha, rumba, and paso doble.[20][3] This national title underscored his competitive prowess prior to international television exposure, achieved through partnerships that emphasized precision and stamina in high-stakes events governed by World DanceSport Federation standards. In addition to national successes, Pernice holds two Guinness World Records for Latin dance feats, demonstrating exceptional technical execution under timed constraints. On 4 November 2016, he completed 55 jive kicks and flicks in 30 seconds in London, UK, surpassing prior benchmarks for speed and control in this dynamic style.[21] Subsequently, on 8 December 2017, he set a record of 24 Charleston swivel steps during a professional challenge, highlighting rotational agility and endurance.[22] These records reflect the precision attainable through intensive repetition and biomechanical focus in Latin training regimens, independent of partnered performance variables. No further national or international championship titles beyond 2012 are documented in competitive dance records.
Television career
Ballando con le Stelle appearances
Giovanni Pernice debuted on Ballando con le Stelle, the Italian adaptation of Strictly Come Dancing, in its 19th season, which aired from September to December 2024.[23] Paired with actress and singer Bianca Guaccero, the duo performed a range of Latin and ballroom routines, culminating in a victory in the grand final on December 22, 2024, where they secured 61% of the public vote.[24] Their winning performances included a paso doble and a freestyle routine, earning top scores from the judging panel.[23] This marked Pernice's first professional engagement on the Italian program, distinguishing it from its British counterpart through a format emphasizing ensemble group dances alongside individual celebrity-professional pairings.Pernice returned for the 20th season in 2025, confirmed as a professional dancer in September, partnering with television presenter Francesca Fialdini.[25] The pair opened the season with a samba to "Anema e core" on September 27, 2025, topping the leaderboard and winning the episode.[26] Subsequent performances included a charleston on October 4, a waltz on October 11, and a salsa on October 18, with the couple tying for first in the third episode on October 12 alongside another pair.[27] As of October 26, 2025, the season remains ongoing, highlighting Pernice's continued prominence on the Italian series amid its blend of competitive scoring and viewer tele-voting.[28]

Strictly Come Dancing participation
Giovanni Pernice debuted on Strictly Come Dancing in its thirteenth series in 2015, partnering with actress Georgia May Foote and reaching the final, where they finished as runners-up.[1] This entry represented his transition to British television following accomplishments on Italy's Ballando con le Stelle, establishing him as a competitive Latin dancer capable of elevating celebrity partners to competitive levels. Over the subsequent eight seasons through series 21 in 2023, Pernice participated in a total of nine editions, consistently achieving above-average longevity and viewer appeal, with no eliminations before the quarterfinals in most cases.[10]Pernice's tenure featured four grand final appearances—series 13 (second place), 15 (with Debbie McGee), 16 (with Faye Tozer), and 19 (victory with Rose Ayling-Ellis)—alongside a 2021 win that marked the first Glitterball Trophy for a deaf contestant in Ayling-Ellis.[1][10] His lowest placement occurred in series 14, exiting in week seven with Laura Whitmore, underscoring an otherwise robust record of advancement driven by technical precision and audience engagement. These outcomes reflected the efficacy of his training regimen, characterized by extended daily rehearsals emphasizing repetition and stamina, which correlated with partners' rapid skill acquisition and high judge scores across seasons.[1][29]This participation arc positioned Pernice as a cornerstone of the show's professional lineup, with his Latin expertise contributing to Strictly's reputation for transformative partnerships, as quantified by sustained leaderboard presence and a championship title amid a field of over 100 celebrity-pro duos since his debut.[10]
Key partnerships and results
Pernice debuted on Strictly Come Dancing in series 13 (2015), partnering with actress Georgia May Foote; the pair reached the final, finishing as runners-up after strong performances including a Charleston that earned a clean sweep of 10s from the judges.[1] In series 14 (2016), he was paired with presenter Laura Whitmore, who was eliminated in week 7, placing 9th overall.[30] Series 15 (2017) saw Pernice with psychic medium Debbie McGee, advancing to the final for a second consecutive runner-up position, highlighted by high Latin scores that set a then-record for most perfect 10s in a season.[31]Continuing his success, Pernice partnered Steps singer Faye Tozer in series 16 (2018), again reaching the final as runners-up with notable Latin routines, including a jive scored at 36.[30] In series 17 (2019), RuPaul's Drag Race judge Michelle Visage placed 7th after elimination in the quarterfinals.[30] Series 18 (2020) featured Good Morning Britain presenter Ranvir Singh, who reached the semi-finals before placing 5th.[30]Pernice's partnership with actress Rose Ayling-Ellis in series 19 (2021) culminated in victory, marking the first win by a deaf contestant; their routines integrated British Sign Language (BSL), including a silent Couple's Choice to "Symphony" by Clean Bandit and multiple perfect 40 scores in Tango, Argentine Tango, and showdance, breaking prior records for highest cumulative points.[5][32] In series 20 (2022), radio presenter Richie Anderson was eliminated in week 6.[30] His final season, series 21 (2023), paired him with actress Amanda Abbington, who withdrew after week 5 due to medical reasons, resulting in no formal placement.[30]Across nine series, Pernice's partnerships yielded an aggregate of four finals appearances (one win, three runners-up), with consistent high marks in Latin dances—often exceeding 35 points—and adaptations like BSL enhancing accessibility and viewer engagement, as evidenced by the 2021 final drawing 11 million viewers.[33] His average elimination occurred around week 7-8 in non-final seasons, underscoring early prowess in elevating celebrity partners to competitive contention.[30]
Giovanni Pernice's training style on Strictly Come Dancing has been characterized by high-intensity rehearsals emphasizing precision and repetition, often described by Pernice himself as driven by perfectionism. In a 2023 interview, he stated, "I'm definitely a perfectionist," reflecting an approach that prioritizes technical mastery and performance elevation through rigorous practice. This method contributed to consistent score improvements among partners, such as Georgia May Foote's progression from early-week averages in the low 20s to a peak of 38 in the 2015 final, securing runner-up position. Similarly, Ore Oduba's scores rose from 25 in week one to multiple 40s en route to victory in 2016.Partners frequently highlighted the transformative impact of his coaching for those committed to the process. Rose Ayling-Ellis, who won in 2021, credited Pernice with adapting routines to her deafness through visual and vibrational cues, noting he "listened to her during rehearsals" and provided "incredible" support for "every single step."[34][35] Her scores advanced from 27 in the premiere to 39 by the semifinals, demonstrating rapid skill acquisition under his guidance. Earlier, Georgia May Foote praised the partnership's intensity as key to her growth, calling Pernice instrumental in her development despite her novice status.[36]Pre-2024 feedback from multiple partners underscored the efficacy of this demanding style for dedicated celebrities, with four consecutive seasons (2015–2018) yielding finals appearances or better, including two wins. Debbie McGee, semifinalist in 2017, echoed sentiments of his motivational rigor fostering breakthroughs, aligning with a pattern where committed participants achieved judge scores exceeding 35 by mid-season.[36] This track record indicated a consensus that Pernice's approach yielded outsized results for those matching his work ethic, prioritizing measurable performance gains over accommodation of lesser commitment.[37]
Post-Strictly television and media projects
Following his departure from Strictly Come Dancing after the 2023 series, Pernice joined the Italian dance competition Ballando con le Stelle, the Italian counterpart to Strictly, for its 2024 season on RAI 1.[38] He debuted on September 28, 2024, partnered with actress and presenter Bianca Guaccero, achieving the highest score of the evening with 39 out of 40 points for their jive routine.[39] Pernice and Guaccero ultimately won the competition final on December 21, 2024, defeating runners-up in a live broadcast viewed by millions.[23][40]In a return to British television, Pernice was announced as a participant in Channel 4's reality series Celebrity Hunted for its Stand Up To Cancer special, airing in January 2025.[41][42] He teamed with singer Max George, a former Strictly contestant, as "hunters" evading pursuers in a high-stakes chase format designed to raise funds for cancer research.[43] This marked his first UK TV appearance since the BBC's investigation into his Strictly training methods, signaling continued media engagement outside dance competitions.[43]Pernice has expressed interest in returning to Strictly but confirmed no involvement in the 2025 series, instead focusing on diversified media roles amid his expanded presence in Italianbroadcasting.[44] His Ballando success underscored a pivot to home-market opportunities, where he received positive feedback for his choreography and partnership dynamics.[45]
Live performances and tours
Collaborative tours
Pernice collaborated with fellow Strictly Come Dancing professionals Aljaž Škorjanec and Gorka Márquez on the "Here Come the Boys" tour, a 38-date UK production launched in June 2019 that featured high-energy performances in a club-style setting with a DJ curating dancefloor anthems.[46][47] The tour emphasized male-led choreography drawing from Latin and contemporary styles, showcasing the dancers' synergies as Strictly pros through group routines and individual spotlights that highlighted their competitive camaraderie.[48][49]Beginning in 2021, Pernice partnered with Anton du Beke for co-headlining live tours, starting with "Him & Me," which combined ballroom demonstrations, storytelling from their Strictly experiences, and joint dance numbers to leverage their longstanding professional rapport.[50][51] This evolved into subsequent productions, including a 2024 iteration titled "Anton & Giovanni Together," followed by "Together Again" in 2025 as their third collaborative outing, each building on their friendship and shared expertise in Latin and standard dances for interactive, narrative-driven shows.[52][53][54] These tours underscored mutual strengths, with du Beke's elegant partnering complementing Pernice's dynamic Latin flair, fostering audience engagement through duets and ensemble pieces.[55]
Solo tours and productions
Following his departure from Strictly Come Dancing, Giovanni Pernice launched independent live productions emphasizing his choreography and performance versatility, distinct from partnered television formats. These solo endeavors allowed full creative control, incorporating Latin and ballroom routines alongside narrative elements drawn from personal influences, such as tributes to figures like Freddie Mercury.[56][57]Pernice's sixth solo tour prior to 2025 had already amassed over 500,000 attendees across sold-out venues, demonstrating sustained demand for his high-energy spectacles featuring world-class dancers and multimedia staging.[58] In 2025, he presented The Last Dance, an all-new production billed as his final solo outing before a planned hiatus, which toured the UK and Ireland from January onward, including stops at major theaters like the Cliffs Pavilion and Weymouth Pavilion.[59][60] The show innovated by blending electrifying dance sequences with thematic reflections on perseverance, transcending traditional dance tours through immersive production values like pyrotechnics and haze effects.[61][62]Despite the preceding misconduct allegations, The Last Dance achieved commercial success with strong ticket sales and positive audience reception, underscoring Pernice's independent draw.[56] Concurrently, Pernice underwent a documented five-week body transformation in mid-2025, sharing before-and-after images of enhanced musculature achieved through intensive training, which he linked to refocusing amid professional challenges.[63][64] This physical renewal paralleled the tour's emphasis on resilience, with no immediate solo bookings announced beyond 2025 as Pernice signaled a creative pause.[57]
Controversies
2024 misconduct allegations
In January 2024, Amanda Abbington, Pernice's partner on the 2023 series of Strictly Come Dancing, lodged a formal complaint with the BBC regarding his conduct during their rehearsals, which had ended with her abrupt withdrawal in week six for medical reasons.[65] In subsequent interviews, Abbington described Pernice's training style as "cruel and mean," claiming it created a "toxic" environment marked by aggression, bullying, and verbal abuse, with producers allegedly reviewing footage weekly and expressing shock.[65] She cited possessing video evidence of these incidents and stated her intent to prevent similar experiences for future participants, while threatening potential legal action against Pernice.[65]By May 2024, the allegations gained broader attention when the legal firm Carter-Ruck contacted the BBC on behalf of multiple complainants, reporting "numerous serious complaints" about Pernice's teaching methods and alleged "threatening and abusive behaviour" from several former partners, amplifying media coverage of Abbington's claims.[66] Abbington later noted that other individuals had reached out to her with comparable accounts of Pernice's rehearsal dynamics.[65]Pernice responded publicly in May 2024, expressing surprise at the reports and rejecting "any suggestion of abusive or threatening behaviour," while emphasizing that his intense approach stemmed from passion and a commitment to elevating partners' performances to competitive levels.[66][67] He maintained that his methods, though demanding, were not misconduct and pledged cooperation with the ensuing inquiry to vindicate himself.[67]
BBC investigation and outcomes
The BBC commissioned an independent review into 17 complaints against Giovanni Pernice related to his conduct during Strictly Come Dancing rehearsals, concluding on 30 September 2024. The investigation upheld six complaints, focusing on instances of verbal bullying and harassment, such as swearing, belittling language, and overly negative feedback. However, the majority of allegations were dismissed, with no evidence found to support claims of physical aggression, threatening behavior, or broader abusive conduct.[7][68]Pernice fully cooperated with the review process, respecting its confidentiality by refraining from public commentary until its completion. In a statement following the announcement, he expressed relief that the most serious accusations, including those of being threatening or abusive, were not substantiated, emphasizing his denial of wrongdoing throughout.[7][68]The BBC acknowledged procedural shortcomings in supporting complainants, issuing a personal apology from Charlotte Moore to Amanda Abbington for inadequate welfare measures during her 2023 partnership with Pernice. Pernice's exclusion from the 2024 Strictly Come Dancing series, announced in June 2024, preceded the review's findings and served as a precautionary measure while the probe was ongoing, rather than a determination of guilt.[7]
Public and industry reactions
Former partners of Pernice, including Debbie McGee, publicly defended his intensive training approach, describing it as transformative and crediting it with enabling high performance on Strictly Come Dancing.[69]McGee, who partnered with him in 2017 and reached the semi-finals, emphasized his demanding style as essential for success without endorsing misconduct claims.[70] Similarly, Michelle Visage, his 2020 partner, voiced support for professional dancers amid broader scrutiny of the show's culture, highlighting the pressures involved.[71] These defenses framed Pernice's methods as rigorous rather than abusive, countering narratives of unchecked aggression.Critics, including elements of the mainstream media, amplified allegations of bullying, with outlets focusing on verbal confrontations and demanding stricter oversight of dance professionals.[72] Coverage often portrayed Pernice's exit from the show as emblematic of systemic issues, prompting calls for accountability despite the absence of criminal charges.[73] Industry opinions remained divided, with some professionals like Kristina Rihanoff describing Pernice as "easy-going" based on personal interactions, while others withheld comment or aligned with complainant perspectives.[69]Following the BBC's September 2024 investigation, which upheld only minor verbal complaints while clearing Pernice of physical aggression and the majority of claims, public sentiment shifted toward vindication among supporters.[7][74]Fan loyalty manifested in strong demand for his independent tours; Pernice announced a 78-date UK tour in September 2024, signaling commercial viability post-allegations.[75] By early 2025, his "The Last Dance" production drew enthusiastic crowds, with fans explicitly demanding his return to Strictly via social media campaigns decrying perceived overreach akin to cancel culture.[76] Pernice confirmed no formal charges were pursued, allowing focus on live performances that underscored enduring popularity.[73]
Personal life
Relationships and family
Pernice has maintained a relatively private personal life despite public interest fueled by his celebrity status, with no records of marriage or children as of 2025. His romantic relationships have occasionally involved fellow entertainers, including a brief four-month romance with Irish reality television personality Maura Higgins from June to October 2021, during which they made their relationship public via social media before parting amicably.[77][78] He was previously linked to model Molly Brown in 2023 and early 2024, sharing affectionate posts online until their reported separation by September 2024.[79][80] Since late 2024, Pernice has been in a relationship with Italian actress and television presenter Bianca Guaccero, his dance partner on the Italian series Ballando con le Stelle, with whom he has integrated family introductions amid ongoing media scrutiny.[81][82]Born in Sicily, Pernice shares strong familial ties, particularly with his older sister Angela Pernice, a dancer who operates a studio in their hometown and with whom he maintains frequent contact, including visits that have involved professional associates like former Strictly Come Dancing partner Rose Ayling-Ellis in September 2022.[83][84] He serves as uncle and godfather to Angela's son and has credited his parents for early support in his dance career, often returning to Sicily for family reunions that underscore bonds enduring professional challenges.[85][86] Angela publicly defended her brother during 2024 controversies, highlighting perceived jealousy from critics in social media posts.[87]
Health and lifestyle
Pernice underwent a notable body transformation in mid-2025, achieving visible muscle definition and reduced body fat over just five weeks of dedicated training following his exit from Strictly Come Dancing.[63][64] This overhaul, shared via Instagram with before-and-after images, highlighted his commitment to physical fitness amid a period of professional transition.[88] As a former competitive dancer, Pernice's regimen emphasized high-intensity workouts, drawing on the endurance required for Latin and ballroom disciplines that demand prolonged rehearsals often exceeding 10 hours daily.[89]Reflecting on the challenges of 2024, which Pernice characterized as "dark times" amid public scrutiny and investigations, he prioritized personal growth over retaliation, stating his intent to emerge as a "better man."[90] This approach underscored his mental resilience, cultivated through years of high-stakes performance where psychological fortitude sustains physical output under pressure.[91] No public records indicate formal therapy engagement by Pernice; instead, his response focused on forward momentum, including participation in international dance projects that reinforced his professional stamina.[92]Beyond fitness, Pernice's lifestyle incorporates travel and a deep affinity for Italian heritage, rooted in his Sicilian upbringing.[93] In 2022, he hosted a BBC travel series guiding Anton du Beke through Sicily's landscapes and traditions, showcasing sites from Palermo to Mount Etna.[94] His "Made in Italy" tours further promote regional customs, cuisine, and dance, blending leisure exploration with cultural advocacy to maintain balance amid demanding schedules.[95]
Legacy and impact
Influence on dance instruction
Giovanni Pernice's teaching methodology on Strictly Come Dancing emphasized rigorous repetition and technical precision, which demonstrably elevated partners with limited prior dance experience to competitive excellence. For instance, in series 19 (2021), he partnered Rose Ayling-Ellis, an actress with no professional dance background, guiding her to the earliest perfect score of 40 in week six and ultimately securing the series win as the first deaf contestant to do so.[96][97] This outcome reflects causal improvements in skill acquisition, as Ayling-Ellis progressed from foundational steps to complex routines incorporating her deafness, such as a silent rumba that highlighted adaptive instruction.[35]Similar patterns appear across partnerships, where Pernice's approach correlated with high final placements and scores, countering narratives of overly harsh methods by evidencing tangible growth metrics. In series 12 (2014), he led Georgia May Foote to victory; in series 15 (2017), Debbie McGee reached third place with consistent high marks, later crediting his methods despite later controversies.[98] Pernice has maintained that he would not alter his intensive style, which prioritizes perfection over comfort, as substantiated by multiple finals appearances and wins that non-dancers rarely achieve without structured escalation in training intensity.[29] These results suggest efficacy in causal skill-building, with success rates—including two Glitterball trophies—outweighing anecdotal complaints about demeanor.[99]Beyond television, Pernice extended his instructional influence through pre-2024 workshops and classes under Ballando Dance, accommodating all skill levels from beginners to advanced in formats like Latin and ballroom sessions.[100][101] These solo-focused workshops, held in venues such as York and Manchester, emphasized accessible progression, mirroring his TV methodology by breaking down techniques for broad participation and fostering rhythm development without prerequisites.[102] Participants reported engaging, fun experiences that built foundational confidence, indicating scalable impact on amateur dancers akin to his celebrity trainees' transformations. This pre-allegation expansion democratized his high-performance techniques, contributing to wider danceinstruction by prioritizing empirical technique over subjective ease.
Awards and recognitions
Pernice won the Italian Open Latin Dance Championship in 2012.[1] He holds two Guinness World Records related to competitive dance techniques: the most jive kicks and flicks in 30 seconds (55, achieved in London on 4 November 2016) and the most Charleston swivel steps in one minute (24, achieved on 8 December 2017 during the Strictly Pro Challenge).[21][22]On Strictly Come Dancing, Pernice received the highest number of perfect scores (tens) from judges, totaling 98 across his appearances from 2015 to 2023.[91] In 2022, he and celebrity partner Rose Ayling-Ellis were awarded the Virgin Media BAFTA TV Award for Must-See Moment for their 2021 Couple's Choice routine to "Symphony," a viewer-voted category recognizing standout television content.[103]Following his departure from Strictly Come Dancing, Pernice won the 19th season of the Italian dance competition Ballando con le Stelle on 22 December 2024, partnering with television presenter Bianca Guaccero to claim the championship title.[23]
