Tanner earned an honors B.A. in English and Theatre from the State University of New York at Potsdam (SUNY Potsdam), graduating a year early.[1] She subsequently studied at the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo), collaborating with Tony Award-winning director Warren Enters.[1] Following her undergraduate work, Tanner trained at the British American Drama Academy (BADA) in London and Oxford, where she received a diploma.[1] In 2021, Tanner completed a Master of Arts in Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Toronto, submitting her thesis titled Who's Zooming Who?.[5] Since fall 2023, she has been a PhD candidate in Theatre and Performance Studies at York University.[4]Career
Early career
Tanner began her acting career in the early 1990s after relocating from the United States to Canada, where she pursued opportunities in film and television.[6] Her formal training, including an honors B.A. in English and Theater from SUNY Potsdam and studies at the British American Drama Academy, provided a strong foundation for her early auditions and performances.[7] She made her film debut in 1991 with the horror movie Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil, portraying the character Laura in this final installment of the Prom Night franchise.[8] This role marked her entry into the industry, though it was a modest start in a direct-to-video release.[9] Tanner achieved her breakthrough in television with the role of George Fayne in the 1995 syndicated series Nancy Drew, a Canadian-French co-production that adapted the classic mystery novels for a young adult audience.[10] As the tomboyish best friend to Nancy Drew, her portrayal spanned 13 episodes, earning recognition for bringing depth to the character's adventurous spirit and establishing Tanner's presence in family-oriented programming.[11] Following this, she made early television appearances, including a guest role as the villainous Sarabeth in the 1996 Goosebumps episode "Monster Blood," which highlighted her versatility in genre work.[12] Expanding into voice acting, Tanner provided the voice of Candy Kong for the animated series Donkey Kong Country from 1997 to 2000, contributing to 40 episodes of the popular adaptation of the Nintendo video game franchise.[13] Her sustained television work began in earnest with the recurring role of Detective Jill Stone in Cold Squad starting in 1998, a crime drama series that showcased her ability to handle more mature, procedural narratives.[14]Later career
In the mid-2000s, Tanner secured a prominent recurring role as Nora McDonald-Venturi, the nurturing stepmother, in the Canadian family sitcom Life with Derek, appearing in all 70 episodes across four seasons from 2005 to 2009. This role marked a significant step in her career, building on earlier television work to establish her as a reliable supporting actress in long-running series. Her performance contributed to the show's popularity among young audiences, highlighting her ability to portray relatable family dynamics. Tanner's work in the sci-fi drama ReGenesis further showcased her range, with a guest appearance in the 2007 episode "Let It Burn" earning her a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Guest Role, Dramatic Series at the 2007 Gemini Awards.[15] She continued with recurring appearances as Mrs. Laura Coyne in Degrassi: The Next Generation from 2010 to 2013, spanning 24 episodes and delving into complex parental storylines amid the teen drama's evolving narratives.[2] In film, she took on the supporting role of Bonnie Reynolds in the 2012 psychological thriller House at the End of the Street, opposite Jennifer Lawrence, adding to her portfolio of genre work.[16] Tanner's career in the 2020s reflected sustained activity in both streaming and limited series, including the role of Erin Voss in seven episodes of Netflix's Locke & Key (2020–2021), where she portrayed a key figure tied to the show's supernatural mysteries.[2] She appeared as Jill in five episodes of the Apple TV+ miniseries Five Days at Memorial (2022), a dramatization of the Hurricane Katrina hospital crisis. In 2023, Tanner reprised her Life with Derek character as Nora McDonald in the spinoff TV movie Life with Luca, reuniting with original cast members.[17] That same year, she joined the second season of SurrealEstate for seven episodes as Rochelle Decker, a scientist and former colleague of a main character, blending drama with real estate intrigue, and reprised the role in season 3 (2025).
