Matthew Macfadyen
David Matthew Macfadyen (born 17 October 1974) is an English actor noted for his work across stage, film, and television, particularly for portraying complex characters in period dramas and contemporary series.[1]
Born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, to a drama teacher and actress mother, Meinir, and an oil executive father, Martin, Macfadyen spent parts of his childhood in Scotland and Indonesia due to his father's career before returning to England for schooling and training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).[1][2]
He first garnered attention in the 1990s through stage productions with companies like Cheek by Jowl and the Royal Shakespeare Company, establishing himself as a accomplished theatre performer before transitioning to screen roles.[1][2]
Macfadyen's breakthrough came with his role as MI5 agent Tom Quinn in the BBC series Spooks (2002–2004, known as MI-5 in the U.S.), followed by international recognition as the aloof Fitzwilliam Darcy in the 2005 film adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, directed by Joe Wright.[1][3]
His portrayal of the ambitious and morally ambiguous Tom Wambsgans in HBO's Succession (2018–2023) brought critical and commercial success, earning him a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series in 2024, as well as Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2020, 2022, and 2024.[1][4]
Other notable film roles include appearances in Atonement (2007), Anna Karenina (2012), and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) as Mr. Paradox, demonstrating his range from historical figures to modern antiheroes.[3]
