Max Lowe
Max Josef Lowe (born 11 May 1997) is an English professional footballer who plays as a left-back for EFL Championship club Sheffield Wednesday.[1] Lowe is a product of the Derby County academy, where he made his senior debut in January 2017.[2] He spent time on loan at Aberdeen during the 2018–19 season before joining Sheffield United in September 2020 for a reported £1.15 million.[3] At Sheffield United, he helped the team earn promotion to the Premier League in the 2022–23 season.[4] Lowe had a loan spell at Nottingham Forest in 2021–22 and returned to Derby County on loan in 2020. In July 2024, he signed a two-year contract with Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer following the expiry of his Sheffield United deal.[5] A former England youth international, Lowe represented his country at under-16, under-17, under-18, and under-20 levels.[6]Early life and youth career
Early life
Max Lowe was born on 11 May 1997 in South Normanton, England.[7][8] At the age of six, he relocated with his family to Derby, where he first took up football a year later by joining a local youth team.[8] Lowe, who measures 1.75 metres in height, developed his initial interest in the sport through these early non-professional experiences before entering a professional academy system.[9]Youth career
Max Lowe joined the Derby County academy at the age of 10 in 2007, beginning his development within the club's youth system.[10] Lowe progressed steadily through the age groups, establishing himself in the Under-18s squad during the 2012–13 season, where he featured in matches in the Premier Development League 2 North.[11] In October 2012, at the age of 15, he signed a scholarship agreement with Derby County, which allowed him to join the academy on a full-time basis the following summer.[11] This two-year scholarship period focused on his technical and tactical growth as a versatile defender. Upon completing his scholarship in 2015, Lowe signed his first professional contract with Derby County that summer, marking a significant milestone in his youth career.[12] During this phase, he gained initial exposure to the senior environment by being named as an unused substitute for a first-team Championship match against Ipswich Town in October 2013, at just 16 years old.[13] Lowe graduated from the academy in 2016, having honed his skills through consistent performances in youth competitions.[14]Club career
Derby County
Lowe, who had progressed through Derby County's youth academy, made his senior debut for the club on 23 August 2016 in the EFL Cup second round against Carlisle United, playing the full 120 minutes in a 1–1 draw that went to a 14–13 penalty shootout victory.[15] He went on to make nine appearances in the 2016–17 Championship season, primarily as a substitute, contributing to Derby's mid-table finish. To gain further first-team experience in competitive leagues, Lowe was loaned to League One side Shrewsbury Town in January 2018 until the end of the 2017–18 season.[16] During his spell, he made 12 appearances without scoring, helping Shrewsbury reach the League One play-off final, where they lost 2–1 to Rotherham United after extra time. Shrewsbury also advanced to the 2017–18 EFL Trophy final, finishing as runners-up after a 1–0 defeat to Lincoln City at Wembley Stadium.[17] In August 2018, Lowe joined Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen on an initial loan until January 2019, which was later extended until the end of the 2018–19 season to allow continued development in a higher-caliber league.[18] He featured in 43 matches across all competitions, scoring three goals—including his first professional goal in a 3–0 Scottish FA Cup win over Dundee on 6 February 2019—and provided defensive solidity on the left flank. Aberdeen reached the 2018–19 Scottish League Cup final as runners-up, losing 1–0 to Celtic at Hampden Park. Upon returning to Derby for the 2019–20 season, Lowe established himself as a regular starter, making 31 appearances in the Championship as the team battled relegation.[19] Over his entire tenure from 2016 to 2020, he accumulated 48 first-team appearances for Derby without scoring, often praised for his versatility and work rate but facing competition for the left-back position that limited his overall opportunities.[19] This period of loans and intermittent starts ultimately paved the way for his permanent departure in pursuit of more consistent playing time.Sheffield United
In the summer of 2020, Max Lowe transferred from Derby County to Sheffield United on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee.[20] He made his debut for the club in the EFL Cup third-round tie against Burnley on 24 September 2020, starting in a 1–1 draw that Burnley won 5–4 on penalties.[21] During the 2020–21 Premier League season, Lowe featured in eight matches as a left-back, building on his earlier loan experience at Derby, though opportunities were limited amid the team's relegation battle. In the 2020–21 FA Cup, he started in the fifth-round match against Bristol City on 10 February 2021, striking the crossbar in a 1–0 victory that advanced United to the quarter-finals.[22][23] On 27 August 2021, Lowe joined Championship side Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan.[24] There, he made 20 league appearances and scored once, contributing to Forest's promotion to the Premier League via the play-off final victory over Huddersfield Town in May 2022.[23] Returning to Sheffield United for the 2022–23 Championship campaign, Lowe established himself as a regular left-back, appearing in 26 league matches and netting his sole goal for the club in a 1–0 win over Wigan Athletic on 17 September 2022.[23] His performances helped United secure automatic promotion as runners-up, with Lowe ranking among the league leaders in tackles per game at 3.2.[25] In the 2023–24 Premier League season, Lowe's involvement was curtailed to 10 appearances due to injury and competition for places, as Sheffield United suffered relegation.[23] Over his four years at Bramall Lane, Lowe amassed 44 appearances and 1 goal across all competitions.[23] Lowe was released by Sheffield United on 29 May 2024 as a free agent, alongside several senior players, following the club's relegation and subsequent squad restructuring under new management.[26]Sheffield Wednesday
Max Lowe joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer from city rivals Sheffield United on 1 July 2024, signing a two-year contract following the expiry of his previous deal.[27][1] Since arriving at Hillsborough, Lowe has established himself as a key defensive asset, primarily deployed as a left-back, wearing the number 3 shirt.[28] As of November 2025, he has made 49 appearances for the club across all competitions without scoring a goal, contributing to the team's defensive structure in the Championship.[29][30] Lowe's 2024–25 season was disrupted by a knee injury sustained in March 2025 during a Steel City derby against Sheffield United, which ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign.[31][32] The injury, described as significant by manager Danny Röhl, highlighted ongoing concerns about Lowe's durability but did not prevent his integration into the squad earlier in the term.[33] In August 2025, amid Sheffield Wednesday's financial difficulties—including delayed wage payments—Lowe submitted a contract notice alongside other players, signaling intent to depart the club.[34] However, following internal discussions, he withdrew the notice and committed to staying, providing stability to the defense under the new managerial setup.[35][36] During the 2025–26 Championship season, Lowe has been a regular starter, featuring in 14 matches with one assist as of early November, helping the team maintain competitiveness in the promotion race.[30] Defensively, he has contributed to two clean sheets while the side conceded 24 goals in his 13 league outings, demonstrating solid positioning and tackling efficiency rated at 62% in key metrics.[37] His experience from prior promotion pushes, including a loan at Nottingham Forest, has informed his role in transitioning play from the back.[1] Lowe remains Sheffield Wednesday's first-choice left-back as of November 2025, with his contract set to run until June 2026, bolstering the club's ambitions amid ongoing squad rebuilding.[38][1]International career
Youth international career
Lowe began his international youth career with the England under-16 team, earning five appearances between 2012 and 2013. His debut came in a 5–0 victory over Northern Ireland during the Sky Sports Victory Shield tournament in late 2012.[39] He followed this with a second call-up for the 2013 Montaigu Tournament in France, where England faced teams including the Netherlands, Chile, and Germany in a round-robin format.[39] Progressing to the under-17 level, Lowe accumulated eight caps from 2013 to 2014, with no goals scored. Notable involvements included the 2014 Algarve Tournament, where he started in a 2–2 draw against Portugal and substituted in a 2–0 win over the Netherlands, bringing his total to eight appearances at that stage.[40] He also featured in the qualifying round of the 2014 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, playing in England's 6–0 group stage win over the Republic of Ireland in Malta, contributing to their qualification efforts for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.[41] Lowe represented the England under-18 side five times in 2014 and 2015, focusing on friendly internationals and elite league fixtures. He debuted in a 2–0 defeat to Italy in September 2014 and later appeared in matches against Poland, Russia, and Switzerland, including a full 90 minutes in a 6–1 home win over the latter in March 2015.[42][43] At under-20 level, Lowe earned six caps between 2016 and 2019, again without scoring. He was added to the squad for the 2017 International U-20 Tournament in France as injury cover, facing Portugal, France, and Ivory Coast in preparation for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.[44] Lowe returned in 2019 for the Maurice Revello Tournament (formerly Toulon), substituting in the opening 4–0 loss to Chile and starting two further group games.[45][46] In total, Lowe amassed 24 caps across England's youth teams from under-16 to under-20, scoring no goals, alongside his academy development at Derby County.Senior international career
Lowe has not earned any senior caps for the England national team as of November 2025.[1] Despite his prior achievements at youth international levels, Lowe has yet to receive a senior call-up, largely attributable to the intense competition for the left-back berth, where players like Luke Shaw, Ben Chilwell, and Tyrick Mitchell have been preferred selections in recent squads.[47] His club form in the EFL Championship has also played a role, with England managers typically prioritizing Premier League performers for national team duties. As of the 2025-26 season, Lowe has featured regularly for Sheffield Wednesday, appearing in 15 Championship matches (plus 1 in the League Cup) and contributing defensively, though the team has struggled with clean sheets.[37][48] At age 28, sustained strong performances could open pathways to future senior consideration, particularly if he elevates his career trajectory through promotion or a transfer to a top-flight club.[1]Career statistics
