Mikey Devlin
Michael James Devlin, commonly known as Mikey Devlin, is a Scottish professional footballer who plays as a centre-back.[1] Born on 3 October 1993 in Motherwell, Scotland, he stands at 1.88 metres tall and has earned three caps for the Scotland national team without scoring.[2][1] He earned three caps for the Scotland national team between October and November 2019. His debut came on 10 October 2019 in a 4–0 UEFA Nations League loss to Russia, followed by UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying wins over San Marino (6–0) on 13 October and Cyprus (2–1) on 16 November.[3][4][5] Devlin began his professional career with Hamilton Academical, joining their youth setup after stints at Heart of Midlothian, Aberdeen, and Celtic academies.[1] He made his senior debut for Hamilton in the Scottish Premier League on 15 January 2011, aged 17, in a 0–4 loss to Rangers, and went on to make 135 appearances across all competitions, scoring 5 goals, during his time there from 2010 to 2018.[6] To gain experience, he had loan spells at Stenhousemuir in the Scottish Second Division during the 2010–11 and 2011–12 seasons, where he played 22 league matches and scored 3 goals.[6] In January 2018, Devlin transferred to Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee, where he made 51 appearances over four seasons, including European qualifiers, and scored once in the league.[7] After leaving Aberdeen in August 2022, he briefly joined English League One side Fleetwood Town, making 3 appearances before moving to Hibernian in February 2023 on a short-term deal, though he did not start any league games.[6] Devlin then signed with Livingston in June 2023, contributing 32 appearances in the 2023–24 Scottish Premiership season as the club suffered relegation.[6] In July 2024, he joined Ayr United in the Scottish Championship, where he made 12 appearances and scored once before a heel injury in March 2025 curtailed his season. His contract expired in June 2025, and as of November 2025, he is without a club.[6][8][9] Since February 2025, he has served as Chair of PFA Scotland.[10] Throughout his career, Devlin has amassed over 250 senior appearances in Scottish and English football, primarily as a reliable defender known for his aerial ability and leadership, though he has not won any major honours at club level.[6][7]Club career
Early career
Michael Devlin was born on 3 October 1993 in Motherwell, Scotland, and showed an early interest in football, progressing through several prominent youth academies in the country.[1] He began his development at Heart of Midlothian before moving to Aberdeen, where he spent time as a teenager, and then joined Celtic's youth system for the 2009–2010 season, featuring for their U17 team.[1] In 2010, Devlin transferred to the academy of Hamilton Academical as a trainee, marking the start of his path to professional football.[6][11] Devlin signed his first professional contract with Hamilton Academical in 2011, positioning him as a promising centre-back in the club's setup.[12] To build senior experience, he was loaned to Stenhousemuir of the Scottish Third Division in March 2011 for the remainder of the 2010–11 season.[6] During this spell, the 17-year-old made 10 appearances and scored 3 goals, contributing to key matches that helped hone his defensive skills and game understanding.[13] In February 2012, Devlin returned to Stenhousemuir on a short-term loan amid Hamilton's squad needs, featuring in 12 appearances without finding the net.[6][14] These outings provided crucial exposure to competitive senior football, facilitating his smooth integration into Hamilton's first team upon his return and laying the foundation for his established role as a reliable defender.[15]Hamilton Academical
Devlin made his senior debut for Hamilton Academical on 15 January 2011, starting in a 0–4 Scottish Premier League defeat to Rangers at Ibrox Stadium under manager Billy Reid, at the age of 17.[16] Following loan spells at Stenhousemuir that offered foundational senior experience, he gradually integrated into the first team, becoming a regular starter during the 2012–13 Scottish First Division season.[15] His defensive contributions as a centre-back helped solidify the backline, playing a key role in Hamilton's push for promotion. In the 2013–14 season, Devlin featured prominently in the Scottish Championship, making over 30 appearances as Hamilton secured automatic promotion to the Scottish Premiership by finishing second.[17] Across his time with the club from 2010 to 2018, he amassed 135 appearances and scored 5 goals in all competitions.[18] In August 2016, aged 22, Devlin was named club captain after Michael McGovern's transfer to Norwich City, a role in which he led Hamilton through multiple Premiership survival battles, including a dramatic play-off victory in 2017.[19] Devlin's tenure faced a major setback in May 2017 when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during a 4–0 league win over Dundee, ruling him out of the subsequent relegation play-off semi-final and final against Queen of the South, which Hamilton won to retain their top-flight status.[20] The injury sidelined him for nearly a year, limiting his play in the 2017–18 season. He departed the club in January 2018 after his contract expired, transferring to Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee; Hamilton praised his progression from academy product to captain and his unwavering loyalty despite injury challenges.[21][16]Aberdeen
In January 2018, Devlin transferred from Hamilton Academical to Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee, marking a homecoming after an earlier stint in the club's youth academy as a teenager.[22] He signed a three-and-a-half-year contract despite recovering from a knee injury sustained at his previous club. Devlin made his competitive debut for Aberdeen on 26 July 2018, starting in a 1–1 draw against Burnley in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round at Pittodrie Stadium.[23] He featured in the second leg as well, a 1–3 extra-time defeat that eliminated Aberdeen from the competition, providing the defender with early European experience at a higher level. Over his four seasons with the Dons from 2018 to 2022, Devlin made 35 appearances and scored 1 goal across all competitions.[24] Devlin established himself as a reliable centre-back in the 2018–19 and 2019–20 seasons, contributing to Aberdeen's third-place finishes in the Scottish Premiership. However, the 2020–21 campaign brought significant challenges, as hamstring and ankle injuries limited him to just a handful of appearances amid stiff competition from defenders like Andrew Considine and Ross McCrorie.[25] These setbacks persisted into 2021–22, where he struggled for consistent starts under manager Stephen Glass. In April 2022, with 18 months remaining on his contract, Aberdeen and Devlin mutually agreed to terminate his deal after he had fallen out of favor and continued to battle injury issues.[26] The club praised his professionalism during a difficult period, while Devlin expressed relief at moving on to rebuild his career.[27]Fleetwood Town
On 26 August 2022, Mikey Devlin signed a short-term contract with Fleetwood Town as a free agent following his departure from Aberdeen, marking his first move into English football under manager Scott Brown, a former teammate.[28][29] During the 2022–2023 League One season, Devlin made 3 appearances without scoring, primarily limited by ongoing fitness issues stemming from prior ankle surgery that had plagued his time at Aberdeen.[30][31] These challenges, including recovery from injury and adapting to the physical demands of English lower-league football after exposure to the Scottish Premiership, hindered his integration into the squad.[32][33] Devlin's contract expired on 31 January 2023, after five months with the club, allowing him to depart as a free agent; he cited a desire to return to Scotland amid his ongoing recovery.[34][35] Reflecting on the stint, Devlin described it as a brief foray into overseas football that ultimately underscored the difficulties of rebuilding form abroad, paving the way for opportunities back home.[33][32]Hibernian
On 13 February 2023, Mikey Devlin signed a short-term contract with Hibernian as a free agent, running until the end of the 2022–23 season.[36] The deal came shortly after his release from Fleetwood Town, allowing a swift return to Scottish football.[36] Devlin was brought in to provide defensive cover at centre-back, following the transfer of Ryan Porteous to Watford and a long-term injury to Rocky Bushiri.[36] Hibs manager Lee Johnson highlighted Devlin's experience from over 100 Scottish Premiership appearances and his positive impact during a trial period in training.[36] Despite the signing, Devlin made just one competitive appearance for the club, coming on as a late substitute in the final match of the season—a 1–1 draw against Heart of Midlothian on 27 May 2023.[37] Hibernian did not extend Devlin's contract at the end of the season, leaving him as a free agent once more in the summer of 2023.Livingston
In May 2023, Devlin signed a two-year contract with Livingston as a free agent, bringing recent experience from his time at Hibernian in the Scottish top flight.[38][39] He was appointed club captain in July 2023, tasked with leading the defense during a challenging season.[40] During the 2023–24 Scottish Premiership season, Devlin made 32 appearances without scoring a goal, featuring regularly as captain in the team's fight against relegation.[41] Notable efforts included a solid performance in the opening 0–0 draw against Aberdeen on 5 August 2023, where he nearly secured a late victory with a powerful long-range shot that struck the crossbar.[42][43] Despite a late 2–1 win over St Johnstone on 11 May 2024, a 4–1 defeat to Motherwell on 4 May 2024 confirmed Livingston's relegation to the Scottish Championship.[44][45][46] Following relegation, an automatic release clause in Devlin's contract was triggered, leading to his departure from the club in the summer of 2024.[47][48]Ayr United
In July 2024, Devlin signed a one-year contract with Ayr United, returning to the Scottish Championship after his release from Livingston.[49] The move reunited him with manager Scott Brown and positioned him as an experienced central defender to bolster the team's defensive stability during their promotion push.[50] During the 2024–25 season, Devlin made 10 appearances in the Championship, starting all of them, alongside 2 cup outings for a total of 12 games and 1 goal.[51][52] His contributions included key defensive actions, such as helping secure 5 clean sheets in those league matches while the team mounted a strong challenge for promotion, winning five of their last games in December 2024. Drawing on his prior captaincy at Livingston, Devlin provided leadership continuity in Ayr's backline amid an injury-disrupted campaign.[53] Devlin's contract expired on 30 June 2025, making him a free agent from July 2025 onward after his season was cut short by injury.[54] In an August 2025 interview, the 32-year-old expressed openness to new challenges while emphasizing his desire to continue playing professionally.[15] As of November 2025, he remains unsigned by any club.[1]International career
Call-up and debut
Devlin earned his first senior call-up to the Scotland national team in October 2018 under manager Alex McLeish for UEFA Nations League C matches against Albania and Israel, as well as a friendly against Portugal.[55][56] Despite being included in the squad, the uncapped defender from Aberdeen did not feature in any of the three fixtures.[57] Devlin was recalled to the Scotland squad in May 2019 by new manager Steve Clarke for the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying matches against Cyprus and Belgium, as one of five uncapped players selected alongside Liam Kelly, Stuart Findlay, Greg Taylor, and Eamonn Brophy.[58][59] His consistent performances as a centre-back for Aberdeen during the 2018–19 season were cited as a key factor in his selection.[60] Devlin made his international debut on 10 October 2019, starting as a centre-back in a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier against Russia at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.[3] At the age of 26, he played the full 90 minutes alongside Charlie Mulgrew in defence during the match, which ended in a 4–0 defeat for Scotland.[2][61]Subsequent appearances
Devlin earned his second cap for Scotland just three days after his debut, starting as a centre-back in a 6–0 victory over San Marino on 13 October 2019 during a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying match at Hampden Park.[62] He played the full 90 minutes alongside Stuart Findlay in defence, contributing to a clean sheet as John McGinn scored a hat-trick in the dominant performance.[4] His third and final appearance came over a month later, on 16 November 2019, when he entered as a late substitute in the 89th minute during Scotland's 2–1 away win against Cyprus in another Euro 2020 qualifier.[62] Devlin replaced Liam Cooper at centre-back, helping to secure the victory sealed by goals from Ryan Christie and John McGinn, despite a late concession to the hosts.[63] These two matches, both under manager Steve Clarke, completed Devlin's international record of three caps and no goals, all earned in the 2019 Euro qualifiers.[62] Devlin received no further call-ups to the Scotland squad after November 2019, largely due to recurring injuries at club level with Aberdeen that hampered his consistency and match fitness.[64] In a 2025 interview, he reflected on his international achievements with pride, stating, "I'm immensely proud to have achieved three international caps for Scotland, and proud of what it represents. But more than anything, I'm proud of the journey it took to get there."[15]Career statistics
