Nicholas Gioacchini
Nicholas Selson Gioacchini (born July 25, 2000) is an American professional soccer player of Italian and Jamaican descent who plays as a centre-forward for Asteras Tripolis F.C. in the Super League Greece.[1] He has represented the United States men's national team, earning eight caps and scoring three goals since his debut in 2020.[2] Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Gioacchini moved to Parma, Italy, at age eight with his family and developed his early soccer skills there before returning to the United States for youth stints with clubs including Bethesda Soccer Club and D.C. United's academy.[3][4] At age 16, he relocated to France, joining Paris FC's youth system before signing his first professional contract with SM Caen in 2018 and debuting for their senior team in Ligue 2 in 2019.[1] Over the next three seasons, he made 47 appearances and scored nine goals for Caen, including a loan spell to Ligue 1 side Montpellier HSC in 2021–22 where he netted twice in limited play.[5] In July 2022, Gioacchini returned to Major League Soccer by signing with Orlando City SC, where he made six appearances before being selected by expansion side St. Louis CITY SC in the MLS Expansion Draft. He contributed to their inaugural Supporters' Shield-winning campaign in 2023 with 10 goals and one assist across 32 appearances.[6] Following that breakout year, he transferred to Italian club Como 1907 in January 2024 for a reported €3.5 million, making nine appearances in Serie B before a season-ending loan to FC Cincinnati in August 2024, during which he recorded zero goals in nine MLS matches.[6][7] In January 2025, he joined Asteras Tripolis on a permanent deal until June 2027, scoring once in seven league appearances during the 2025–26 Super League season as of November 2025.[1] On the international stage, Gioacchini earned his first U.S. cap in a November 2020 friendly against Wales and scored twice on his first start against Panama days later.[5] He featured prominently in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, appearing in five matches—including the final and scoring once against Martinique—as the U.S. claimed the title.[5]Early life and youth career
Family background and childhood
Nicholas Gioacchini was born on July 25, 2000, in Kansas City, Missouri, to an Italian father and a Jamaican mother.[2][8] His early years were spent in the Kansas City area, specifically in Overland Park, Kansas, where he attended a small private school and began developing an interest in sports amid a multicultural family environment influenced by his parents' heritages.[9] At the age of eight, Gioacchini's family relocated to Parma, Italy, to support his father's career as a traveling pasta machine salesman, marking a significant shift that exposed him to European culture and language during his formative years.[8][3] Before this move, he had initial exposure to soccer through local youth clubs in the Kansas City region, including stints with Blue Valley Soccer Club, where he played on an orange-jerseyed team that fostered his early passion for the sport.[9] Four years later, at age 12, the family returned to the United States and settled in Bethesda, Maryland, allowing Gioacchini to readjust to American life while continuing to build on his athletic foundations shaped by frequent relocations and familial support for physical activity.[10] These moves, driven by his father's professional opportunities, contributed to Gioacchini's adaptability and global perspective in his childhood.[11]Youth soccer development
Upon returning to the United States at age 12 in 2012, Nicholas Gioacchini settled with his family in Bethesda, Maryland, where he began structured youth soccer training with local clubs in the area. He played for Bethesda Soccer Club, Cerritos Soccer Academy, D.C. United Academy, Olney Soccer Club, and ESSA Soccer Academy, honing his skills in competitive environments that emphasized technical development and team play. These experiences laid the foundation for his growth as a forward, showcasing his speed and goal-scoring ability in regional youth competitions.[4][1] In 2015, at age 15, Gioacchini moved with his family to France, facilitated by his father's career in international sales, and joined the Paris FC academy to pursue advanced soccer training. The French youth system, known for its rigorous technical drills, tactical discipline, and emphasis on physical conditioning, provided a professional-oriented pathway that contrasted with more recreational U.S. youth setups. At Paris FC, he progressed through the U-19 ranks, competing in national youth tournaments and contributing goals that helped his team reach the round of 16 in France's top U-19 competition. His performances earned him a nomination as the best soccer player in the Paris region for those born in 2000 during the 2017/18 season.[12][4] Gioacchini's development culminated in appearances with Paris FC's reserve team (B team) in the Championnat National 3 during the 2017–18 season, where he made 6 appearances and scored 2 goals. This step bridged his youth academy tenure to semi-professional exposure, solidifying his transition toward a full professional contract. By opting for immersion in Europe's competitive academies over the typical American route of high school and college soccer, Gioacchini positioned himself for opportunities in Ligue 2, reflecting a deliberate focus on early pro-level growth.[13][4]Club career
Paris FC (2015–2018)
Nicholas Gioacchini joined the Paris FC academy in 2015 at the age of 15, shortly after relocating to France with his family from the United States, where he had begun his youth soccer development.[14][5] This move marked his immersion into the competitive French youth system, progressing through the club's U17 and U19 squads over the next three years. During his time at Paris FC, Gioacchini honed his skills as a forward, participating in rigorous youth training that emphasized technical proficiency and tactical awareness typical of French academies. In the 2017–18 season, he emerged as a standout in the U19 team, scoring all of his side's regulation-time goals to guide them to the round of 16 in France's premier U19 national championship.[4] His performances earned him a nomination for the best soccer player in the Paris region for players born in 2000 that season.[4] Gioacchini gained his initial semi-professional experience with Paris FC's reserve side, Paris FC B, during the 2017–18 campaign in the Championnat de France Amateur 2, making 6 appearances and netting 2 goals.[15] These outings provided crucial exposure to higher-level competition, bridging his youth development to potential senior opportunities. In May 2018, Gioacchini departed Paris FC to sign a two-year amateur contract with Ligue 2 club SM Caen, aiming to accelerate his path toward professional first-team football despite interest from other suitors.[16]Caen and loan to Montpellier (2018–2022)
On May 14, 2018, Gioacchini signed his first professional contract with Ligue 2 club SM Caen, agreeing to a two-year deal after impressing in the youth ranks.[17] Initially assigned to the reserve team, he contributed in lower divisions while training with the senior squad, building toward a first-team breakthrough.[16] Gioacchini made his Ligue 2 debut on October 25, 2019, starting for Caen against his former youth club Paris FC and scoring the opener in a 4–2 victory, marking an impactful entry into professional competition at age 19.[16] He added another goal in a 1–0 win over Nancy on December 2, 2019, helping secure three points in a tight contest.[18] Across the 2019–20 season, limited by the league's suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he appeared in 16 Ligue 2 matches, scoring twice while adapting to the physical demands of second-tier French football.[18] In the 2020–21 season, Gioacchini established himself as a regular starter, featuring in 30 Ligue 2 outings with four goals and one assist, contributing to Caen's mid-table finish.[19] Key contributions included goals against Rodez AF on September 12, 2020, in a 2–1 win; Amiens SC on October 3, 2020, during a 1–1 draw; Nancy again on November 7, 2020, in a 2–1 victory; and USL Dunkerque on December 18, 2020, aiding a 3–1 success.[19] His pace and finishing helped push for promotion contention early in the campaign, though injuries and team inconsistencies limited further impact. Overall, from 2019 to early 2022, Gioacchini made 53 first-team appearances for Caen across all competitions, scoring nine goals and providing one assist, including contributions in Coupe de France matches, solidifying his development in a competitive environment.[20] Seeking a step up to Ligue 1, Gioacchini joined Montpellier HSC on a season-long loan on August 31, 2021, with an option to buy.[21] He played three Ligue 2 matches for Caen prior to the move, maintaining his form. At Montpellier, the 21-year-old made 28 Ligue 1 appearances, mostly as a substitute with three starts, recording two assists but no goals in 497 minutes.[22] His contributions included an assist in a 2–1 win over Saint-Étienne on August 22, 2021, and another in a 3–2 victory against Brest on December 11, 2021.[20] Despite the exposure to top-flight defenses, Gioacchini faced adaptation challenges, citing the unfamiliar environment as a hurdle rather than the technical level, which limited his integration into the starting lineup.[23] Upon returning to Caen at the end of the 2021–22 season, Gioacchini's contract expired, prompting a decision to pursue opportunities abroad in Major League Soccer, where he sought a fresh start aligned with his American roots.[24]Orlando City SC (2022)
On July 20, 2022, Orlando City SC acquired Nicholas Gioacchini from French Ligue 2 club SM Caen for an undisclosed fee, signing him to a two-and-a-half-year contract through the end of 2024, with a club option for 2025.[14][24] The move marked Gioacchini's return to Major League Soccer as a homegrown talent eligible for the U.S. national team, bringing his technical proficiency from European leagues to bolster the Lions' attacking options.[14] Gioacchini featured in six matches for Orlando City during the 2022 season, including two starts and 138 total minutes played across the MLS regular season and playoffs, but he did not record any goals or assists.[20] Deployed primarily as a winger or forward, he encountered difficulties adapting to the squad midway through the campaign, where established players created intense competition for minutes in the forward line, limiting his opportunities to contribute meaningfully.[25][26] His tenure with Orlando concluded on November 11, 2022, when St. Louis City SC selected him in the MLS Expansion Draft.[27][28]St. Louis City SC (2023–2024)
Nicholas Gioacchini was selected by St. Louis City SC with the first overall pick in the 2022 MLS Expansion Draft on November 11, 2022, after a brief stint with Orlando City SC that served as his entry into Major League Soccer.[27] He made his debut for the expansion club during their inaugural 2023 season, establishing himself as a key attacking presence.[29] In the 2023 MLS regular season, Gioacchini appeared in 32 matches, starting 24, and scored 10 goals with 1 assist, contributing significantly to St. Louis City SC's Western Conference regular-season title and their contention for the Supporters' Shield.[29] He added 2 appearances in the MLS Cup Playoffs without scoring, bringing his total MLS appearances with the club to 34 that year.[29] As a starting forward, Gioacchini's productivity marked a breakout period, with notable goals including a brace against Austin FC on August 20, 2023, that secured his 9th and 10th strikes of the season in a 6-3 victory.[30] He also netted against rivals like Sporting Kansas City and LA Galaxy, earning MLS Goal of the Month honors for March and June 2023.[31][32] Born in Missouri, Gioacchini's hometown connection resonated deeply with St. Louis fans, fostering a strong bond during the club's debut campaign and helping propel team morale amid their surprise success.[11] His 10 goals made him the team's leading scorer, underscoring his role in a dynamic attack that averaged over 1.8 goals per game.[29][33] Gioacchini featured in no competitive MLS matches for St. Louis in 2024 prior to his transfer, with his overall MLS record with the club totaling 34 appearances and 10 goals across the 2023 regular season and playoffs.[29] On January 24, 2024, St. Louis City SC transferred him to Italian Serie B side Como 1907 for an undisclosed fee, ending his tenure after one full season.[6]Como 1907 and loan to FC Cincinnati (2024–2025)
On January 24, 2024, Nicholas Gioacchini transferred from St. Louis City SC to Serie B club Como 1907 for a reported initial fee of €2 million, with add-ons potentially increasing the total to €3.5 million.[34][35] During his stint with Como in the 2023–24 Serie B season, Gioacchini struggled to secure regular playing time amid stiff competition in the forward line, making 9 appearances (1 start) without scoring a goal or providing an assist.[36][37] These challenges were compounded by adaptation issues to the Italian style of play following his strong prior form in Major League Soccer with St. Louis, where he had scored 10 goals in 2023.[38] Como achieved promotion to Serie A on May 10, 2024, securing second place in Serie B with a 1–1 draw against Cosenza on the final matchday, marking the club's return to the top flight after 21 years.[39][40] However, Gioacchini's limited role persisted into the early 2024–25 Serie A campaign, where he featured sparingly as the team adjusted to the higher level.[36] Seeking more opportunities, Gioacchini joined FC Cincinnati on loan from Como on August 15, 2024, for the remainder of the MLS regular season and playoffs, without an option to buy.[41][42] In 8 appearances (6 starts) totaling 434 minutes, he recorded no goals or assists, often deployed as a substitute or in a supporting role amid Cincinnati's push for the Supporters' Shield.[43] Upon returning from the loan at the end of 2024, Gioacchini's contract with Como was terminated early, leading to a permanent transfer to Greek Super League club Asteras Tripolis on January 26, 2025.[44][45]Asteras Tripolis (2025–present)
On January 26, 2025, Nicholas Gioacchini joined Asteras Tripolis on a permanent transfer from Como 1907, signing a contract until June 30, 2027.[44][1] During the remainder of the 2024–25 Super League season, Gioacchini made 12 appearances, scoring 1 goal in the league's fifth-place play-offs against OFI Crete on April 13, 2025.[46][47] He also featured in 2 Greek Cup matches without scoring.[46] In the 2025–26 season, as of November 10, 2025, Gioacchini has recorded 7 Super League appearances for 159 minutes and 1 goal, alongside 3 Greek Cup outings for 163 minutes.[48] His goal came as a substitute equalizer in a 3–3 draw against strong contenders PAOK Thessaloniki on September 28, 2025.[49][50] On November 9, 2025, he started and played 63 minutes in a 0–0 draw with Aris Thessaloniki, receiving a yellow card in the 28th minute.[48][51] Primarily deployed as a centre-forward, Gioacchini has adapted to the physical and tactical demands of the Greek Super League, often entering as a substitute to provide energy and hold-up play, with potential for increased starting opportunities under manager Nikos Papadopoulos.[13] His prior loan experiences have enhanced his versatility in forward roles.[23]International career
Youth international career
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Nicholas Gioacchini held eligibility to represent the United States through his birth, Italy via his paternal heritage, and Jamaica through his maternal lineage.[9][52] Despite opportunities arising from his multicultural background and development in European youth systems, Gioacchini did not receive call-ups or earn caps at the youth international level for any nation prior to 2020.[53] His progression through the academies of Paris FC and later SM Caen in France positioned him as a prospect for multiple federations during his teenage years, yet no formal trials or selections materialized for Italian or Jamaican youth squads.[8] Gioacchini's decision to commit to the United States around 2020 stemmed from his American roots and the direct pathway offered by U.S. Soccer scouts monitoring his performances abroad, bypassing traditional youth pathways in favor of a senior-level opportunity.[54] This choice aligned with his desire to represent his birthplace, solidifying his international allegiance before accumulating any youth experience.[55]Senior international career
Nicholas Gioacchini earned his first call-up to the senior United States men's national team (USMNT) in November 2020. He made his senior debut as a substitute in the 80th minute of a 0–0 friendly draw against Wales on November 12, 2020, in Swansea.[5] Gioacchini started his second cap three days later, on November 16, 2020, in a 6–2 friendly victory over Panama in Orlando, where he scored twice in the second half—his first international goals—despite missing a penalty kick, helping secure the win after entering as part of a rotated squad under interim coach Anthony Hudson. He added an assist in a March 25, 2021, World Cup qualifier against Jamaica, substituting in the 68th minute during a 4–1 comeback win in Kingston. These early contributions highlighted his emergence as a promising forward option for the USMNT.[56] Gioacchini was included in the USMNT roster for the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, where he made five appearances across the tournament, contributing one goal and one assist as the team reached the final. In the group stage, he started against Haiti on July 12 in a 1–0 win before substituting into the 6–1 thrashing of Martinique on July 16, scoring in the 85th minute to extend the lead. He came off the bench in the 1–0 quarterfinal victory over Jamaica on July 26 and provided a crucial assist for Gyasi Zardes' 86th-minute winner in the 1–0 semifinal defeat of Qatar on July 30. In the final against Mexico on August 1, Gioacchini substituted in the 57th minute during a 1–0 loss, marking his eighth and most recent cap to date. His Gold Cup performances, including the goal and assist, underscored his role in the attack amid a depth push for the competition.[57][58] As of November 2025, Gioacchini has not received a USMNT call-up since the 2021 Gold Cup, accumulating 8 caps and 3 goals overall with no further appearances under coaches Gregg Berhalter or Mauricio Pochettino. Despite consistent club form in MLS and European leagues, he remains on the periphery of the national team depth chart, ranked 15th among center forwards in a June 2025 analysis ahead of the Gold Cup, reflecting increased competition in the forward pool.[2][59]Career statistics
