Ramkumar
Ramkumar Ganesan (born 12 January 1952) is an Indian film producer, actor, and politician. He is the eldest son of the legendary Tamil actor Sivaji Ganesan and serves as the head of Sivaji Productions, the production company founded by his father. Born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Ramkumar entered the film industry in the 1980s, producing several Tamil films under Sivaji Productions, including Thevar Magan (1992) and Padayappa (1999). He has also acted in supporting roles in films such as I (2015) and LKG (2019).[1] In February 2021, Ramkumar joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu, citing admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has been involved in political activities, including defending his father's legacy against criticisms.[2][3] In 2025, Ramkumar was involved in a legal dispute over the family bungalow "Annai Illam" in T. Nagar, Chennai, stemming from debts of a family company. He filed an affidavit renouncing any claim to the property in favor of his brother Prabhu, and the case saw partial resolution with the withdrawal of attachment orders by April 2025.[4][5]Early life and education
Family background
Ramkumar Ganesan was born on 3 July 1955 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.[6] He is the eldest son of the legendary Tamil actor Sivaji Ganesan and his wife Kamala Ganesan.[7] Sivaji Ganesan and Kamala had four children, with Ramkumar's siblings including his younger brother, actor Prabhu Ganesan, and two sisters, Shanthi and Thenmozhi.[8] Ramkumar is also the uncle of actor Vikram Prabhu, the son of Prabhu Ganesan.[9] Raised in a prominent Tamil film family, Ramkumar was exposed to the cinema world from childhood, given his father's stature as one of Indian cinema's most influential actors, renowned for his method acting and contributions to over 280 films. The family's business ventures were shaped by the influence of V. C. Shanmugham, Sivaji Ganesan's brother and co-founder of Sivaji Productions in 1956, who managed its operations until his death in 1986.[10] Following Sivaji Ganesan's death on 21 July 2001, Ramkumar inherited key family responsibilities, including leading Sivaji Productions as its head to preserve the legacy established by his father and uncle.Education
Ramkumar Ganesan received his early education at Bishop Cotton Boys' School in Bangalore, a prestigious institution known for its rigorous academic environment.[6] He later pursued higher education at Vivekananda College in Chennai, where he earned a degree in business administration.[11] Influenced by his family's longstanding involvement in the cinema industry, Ramkumar chose to study business administration to equip himself with the managerial skills needed for the field.[12] This educational background proved instrumental in preparing him to oversee operations at the family-owned Sivaji Productions, providing a strong foundation in financial management, organizational strategies, and business operations essential for the production house's success.[6]Personal life
Marriages
Ramkumar Ganesan's first marriage was to Meenakshi, the mother of his son Shivaji Dev, an actor in Tamil films born on September 20, 1989.[13] As the eldest son of legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan, this union reflected the family's prominent status in Tamil cinema, though details of the wedding remained private.[8] His second marriage was to Kannammal, who has been publicly associated with the family in events honoring their legacy, such as gatherings with notable figures like singer Lata Mangeshkar in the early 2000s.[14] The marriage, like the first, was conducted discreetly, aligning with the Ganesan family's tradition of maintaining personal matters away from media scrutiny while upholding their cultural prominence.Children
Ramkumar Ganesan has four children, all sons, continuing the family's legacy in the Tamil film industry to varying degrees. His son Dushyanth Ramkumar is an actor and producer who debuted in the 2003 film Success, directed by P. Vasu, and followed it with a supporting role in Machi (2004). After these early ventures did not succeed commercially, Dushyanth took a break from acting before returning as a producer with his banner Eesan Productions, notably backing Meen Kuzhambum Mann Paanaiyum (2016), which marked actor Prabhu's 200th film. He currently contributes to Sivaji Productions, the family-run production house, and reprised his acting role in Theerkadarishi (2023).[7][15] Another son, Shivaji Dev (born Shiva Kumar), is an actor who entered the industry in 2008 with Singakutty and has appeared in films such as Kerala Cafe (2009) and Irandu Mugam (2010). Born from Ramkumar's first marriage, Shivaji Dev has pursued a career in Tamil cinema while maintaining a relatively independent profile.[15][16] Son Dhaarshan Ganesan, known for his work in theatre, has been preparing for a film debut in Lenin Pandiyan since at least 2021, drawing on the family's cinematic heritage while starting from stage performances. His twin brother, Rishyan Ganesan, leads a low-profile life outside the public eye and has no reported involvement in entertainment.[17][18]Political involvement
Joining the BJP
In February 2021, Ramkumar Ganesan, the elder son of legendary actor and politician Sivaji Ganesan, formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the party's Tamil Nadu headquarters in Chennai.[19] The event took place on February 11, attended by senior leaders including BJP Tamil Nadu president L. Murugan and national general secretary C.T. Ravi, marking a significant addition to the party's roster ahead of the state assembly elections.[20] Ramkumar's son, Dushyant Ramkumar, also enrolled in the party during the same ceremony, underscoring a family commitment to the affiliation.[3] Ramkumar's decision stemmed from his stated admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom he credited with leading the country effectively and expressed a desire to support by strengthening the BJP's hand in Tamil Nadu.[21] He further articulated that the move aligned with restoring his father's core values of nationalism and national devotion to the state's political landscape, viewing the BJP as a vehicle for those ideals.[22] This represented a shift from the family's historical political ties, as Sivaji Ganesan had initially sympathized with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) before aligning with the Indian National Congress, where he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1982.[3][23] The public announcement of Ramkumar's induction was positioned as part of the BJP's broader efforts to expand its influence in Tamil Nadu by attracting prominent figures from the film industry and beyond.[2] In Tamil Nadu's political circles, the development elicited a polarized response: the BJP hailed it as a boost to their organizational strength, while the Congress condemned the switch, pointing to Sivaji Ganesan's longstanding association with their party as a point of contention.[21]Political activities
Following his entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2021, Ramkumar Ganesan has engaged sparingly in overt political campaigning or events in Tamil Nadu, prioritizing his longstanding commitments in the film industry as a producer and occasional actor. His visible contributions have centered on public endorsements and defensive statements aligned with the party's leadership. In May 2022, Ganesan publicly rebuked the Communist Party of India (CPI) state secretary R. Mutharasan for invoking his late father Sivaji Ganesan's name to criticize Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that the veteran actor would have returned his national awards in protest against Modi's governance. Ganesan countered that his father, known for broad political friendships, would have admired Modi's leadership and economic policies, and accused the CPI of hypocrisy given Sivaji Ganesan's past support for their leaders during difficult times. He emphasized that such tactics misrepresented his father's legacy and reflected the CPI's ignorance of contemporary national developments.[24] Ganesan's interventions have remained infrequent, with no reported major roles in BJP's Tamil Nadu election campaigns for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls or subsequent state initiatives through 2025, underscoring his subdued political profile amid ongoing film-related endeavors.Filmography
