Early life
Michael Anthony Bell II, known professionally as Tone Bell, was born on August 10, 1983, in Decatur, Georgia.[1] Details on his family background and early childhood remain limited in public records, though he has described growing up in a vibrant and diverse community in the Atlanta metropolitan area that exposed him to varied cultural influences.[12] Bell attended Savannah State University in Savannah, Georgia, where he majored in communications with a concentration in radio and television through the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2004.[13] During his time there, he served as the university's mascot, the SSU Tiger, performing at football games and other events, which provided early experience in engaging audiences.[14] Following graduation, Bell worked briefly as a first-grade teacher, an experience that honed his skills in communication and performance under pressure.[15] He later transitioned to promotional work for a beer company in Atlanta, a role that eventually transferred him to Dallas, Texas, in the mid-2000s.[16] This relocation introduced him to the Dallas comedy scene, where he began attending open-mic nights as an initial foray into stand-up.[17]Comedy career
After relocating to Dallas, Texas, from his native Georgia, Tone Bell began performing stand-up comedy in local clubs, starting with open-mic nights around 2008. He honed his craft through regular appearances at venues in the Dallas comedy scene, transitioning from a corporate promotions job to pursuing comedy more seriously.[18][5] In 2011, Bell moved to Los Angeles to focus on comedy full-time, quickly establishing himself in the competitive West Coast circuit. Shortly after arriving, he won the NBC Stand Up for Diversity Talent Search in 2011, earning a development deal with the network that served as a major breakthrough for his career.[19][20] Bell has since built a robust touring schedule, performing nationwide stand-up shows at comedy clubs, theaters, and festivals, with regular appearances in cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Austin. His live performances emphasize high-energy delivery and crowd interaction, contributing to sold-out runs at venues such as Levity Live and The Ice House Comedy Club.[21][22] In 2019, Bell released his one-hour stand-up special Tone Bell: Can't Cancel This, recorded at the Wyly Theatre in Dallas and distributed by Comedy Dynamics. It became available on platforms including Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video in 2024. The special highlights his signature storytelling approach, blending personal anecdotes with cultural commentary on everyday life and social dynamics. Bell's comedy often addresses representation of Black experiences and underrepresented communities, drawing from his background to deliver relatable, insightful humor. As of 2025, he is developing material for a new stand-up special.[23][12][24][8]Acting career
Tone Bell transitioned from stand-up comedy to acting in the early 2010s, securing his first recurring television role as the bartender RJ on the NBC sitcom Whitney from 2011 to 2013, where he appeared in 13 episodes (season 2) alongside Whitney Cummings. This guest and recurring work on shows like Key & Peele (2012) and Single Ladies (2012) helped build his on-screen presence, leveraging his comedic timing to land more prominent parts. His entry into acting was catalyzed by success in comedy specials and auditions, allowing him to blend humor with scripted roles.[25] A breakthrough came with the lead supporting role of court bailiff Tedward on the NBC sitcom Bad Judge in 2014, where his wisecracking performance as the straight-laced yet affable character earned notice for showcasing his dramatic range beyond stand-up.[26] This established him in ensemble sitcoms, leading to further opportunities in genre television. In 2016, Bell joined The CW's The Flash as Scott Evans, Iris West's brash new editor-in-chief at Central City Picture News, appearing in a multi-episode arc across seasons 2 and 3 that highlighted his ability to handle action-drama dynamics.[27] These roles marked his growth from comedic side characters to more layered supporting parts, as he noted in interviews that acting allowed him to explore vulnerability while maintaining his comic roots.[18] Bell expanded into leading roles with Netflix's Survival of the Thickest (2023–present), portraying Khalil, the supportive best friend and romantic confidant to lead Mavis Beaumont (Michelle Buteau), in a series that earned him a NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Comedy Series.[28] The show's second season, released in 2025, further solidified his status in streaming comedies, emphasizing themes of friendship and self-discovery.[29] In film, he took on the action-oriented role of Spider in Netflix's Trigger Warning (2024), directed by Mouly Surya, playing a key ally in Jessica Alba's special forces operative narrative, which broadened his portfolio into feature-length thrillers.[30] Recent developments include his lead role in the upcoming dark comedy Transcending (2026), co-starring Kirby Howell-Baptiste, announced after wrapping production in mid-2025. Bell has a supporting role as Tyrone Maltese in the upcoming Warner Bros. film Coyote vs. Acme (2026).[31] Throughout his career, Bell has discussed the challenges of shifting from the immediacy of stand-up to the collaborative nature of acting, particularly in dramatic scenes that require emotional depth, as seen in his preparation for roles like those in The Flash and Survival of the Thickest.[25] He continues to blend acting with comedy through ongoing tours and specials, maintaining a dual career that keeps him versatile in Hollywood as of 2025.[32]Filmography
