Chandrasekhar and producer Shoba Chandrasekhar.[3] Despite his familial connections, he has emphasized carving an independent career, turning down opportunities that leveraged his cousin's fame.[4] His early visibility increased through participation in the Celebrity Cricket League during the early 2010s, where he represented the Chennai Rhinos team alongside other industry figures.[2] Throughout his career, Vikranth has starred in a mix of lead and supporting roles, often in romantic dramas and action-oriented films. Key highlights include his portrayal of Sethu in the vigilante thriller Pandiya Nadu (2013), directed by Suseenthiran, where he delivered a notable cameo that boosted his recognition.[5] He earned acclaim for his performance as Abdul Kader in the political action film Kavan (2017) and in the supporting role in the rural drama Thondan (2017), the latter garnering him a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2018 South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA).[6] Other significant works encompass Muthukku Muthaaga (2011), a drama addressing caste issues, and Goripalayam (2010), a coming-of-age story.[1] As of 2025, recent projects include Madharasi (2025) and Lal Salaam (2024), the latter featuring him alongside his cousin Vijay.[1] Vikranth is married to television actress Manasa Hemachandran since 2009; the couple has two sons. He maintains a low-profile family life while balancing his commitments in film and cricket leagues.[7][2][8]Early life and education
Family background
Vikranth Santhosh was born on 13 November 1984 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.[1] His mother, Sheela, is a Tamil actress known for her role as Lakshmi Amma in the television series Pandian Stores.[9] His father's name has not been publicly disclosed.[10] Vikranth has a brother named Sanjeev, who is a filmmaker and directed the 2015 Tamil action drama Thakka Thakka, in which Vikranth starred. Through his extended family, Vikranth is connected to prominent figures in Tamil cinema; he is the cousin of actor Joseph Vijay, widely known as Thalapathy Vijay.[3] Additionally, his uncle S. A. Chandrasekhar is a well-known Tamil film director, producer, and screenwriter, and his aunt Shoba Chandrasekhar is a producer.[11][3] Growing up in a household deeply immersed in the film industry, Vikranth was exposed to cinema from a young age, which sparked his early interest in acting. At the age of seven, he made his on-screen debut as a child artist, portraying Azhagappan's son in the 1991 Tamil drama Azhagan directed by K. Balachander. This familial environment in Chennai provided him with unique insights into the world of Tamil filmmaking during his formative years.[10]Education
Vikranth completed his schooling in Chennai, though the specific institution has not been publicly detailed.[12] He later pursued a Bachelor's degree in Visual Communication at Loyola College in Chennai, graduating in the early 2000s.[10][13] Following his graduation, he transitioned into lead acting roles, marking a shift from formal education to a professional career in cinema, with his debut as a lead in the 2005 film Karka Kasadara.[13]Acting career
Debut and early roles
Vikranth began his acting career as a child artist in the 1991 Tamil film Azhagan, portraying the role of Azhagappan's son at the age of seven.[14][10] He transitioned to lead roles with his adult debut in the romantic drama Karka Kasadara (2005), directed by R. V. Udayakumar, where he played the central character of Rahul, an NRI returning to India.[15][16] The film marked his introduction as a lead actor but received moderate box-office reception in the competitive Tamil industry.[16] As a newcomer, Vikranth encountered significant challenges, including underwhelming commercial performance of his initial projects and criticism of his acting, which hindered his early establishment in the field.[16] He subsequently took on supporting roles to build experience, notably appearing as the friend of the lead character in the romantic comedy Yaaradi Nee Mohini (2008), alongside Dhanush and Nayanthara.[16]Rise to prominence
Vikranth's mid-career trajectory saw significant growth through a series of diverse roles that showcased his range as an actor, transitioning from supporting parts to more prominent leads and ensemble contributions between 2015 and 2017. After a period of supporting roles, he returned to lead roles in the 2015 action-comedy Thakka Thakka, directed by Sanjeev, where he portrayed Sathya, a wine shop worker entangled in a tale of friendship and revenge.[17] Although the film received mixed reviews for its screenplay, it represented a key step in establishing Vikranth as a capable lead in commercial entertainers.[18] The following year, Vikranth explored antagonistic territory in the 2016 sports drama Gethu, directed by Krish Thirukumaran and produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin, playing the bully character Craig, known as "Bull." This role allowed him to delve into a more intense, villainous persona, adding to his repertoire of versatile portrayals beyond heroic archetypes. Critics noted his effective handling of the negative shade, contributing to the film's exploration of revenge and redemption themes.[19] Vikranth's prominence elevated further in 2017 with key roles in two impactful films: the political drama Kavan, directed by K.V. Anand, and the action thriller Thondan, helmed by Samuthirakani. In Kavan, he essayed the dual-lead supporting role of Abdul Kader, an environmental activist alongside his partner Kalpana, whose arc drives much of the narrative's climax against media corruption. His performance was praised for making a strong presence and being engaging, particularly in the latter portions, marking him as an underrated talent in Kollywood.[20][21] The film proved a commercial success, grossing over ₹20 crore in its first 10 days and striking gold at the box office through its satirical take on television journalism.[22] Likewise, in Thondan, Vikranth shared dual-lead duties as Vicky, a young assistant ambulance driver in a rural setting, navigating social issues like corruption and humanitarian crises within an ensemble cast featuring Samuthirakani and Sunaina. His energetic and supportive portrayal earned laurels for providing solid backing to the lead and demonstrating growth in handling rustic, action-oriented characters.[23][24] The movie emerged as a sleeper hit with modest commercial success despite a modest opening, underscoring its resonance with audiences through its message-driven narrative.[25] These projects highlighted Vikranth's versatility across genres—from action heroes and antagonists to activists and rural protagonists—while expanding his opportunities in ensemble setups and high-profile collaborations with directors like K.V. Anand and Samuthirakani. Although he secured no major awards during this phase, his work in Thondan garnered a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2018 South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA).[6]Recent projects and television
