Volbeat
Volbeat is a Danish rock band formed in Copenhagen in 2001 by vocalist and rhythm guitarist Michael Poulsen, following the breakup of his prior death metal project Dominus.[1] The group blends heavy metal with influences from rock and roll, punk, rockabilly, glam, and classic rock, creating a distinctive sound that has propelled them to global prominence in the hard rock scene.[2][3] Since emerging from the Danish underground, Volbeat has built a prolific career marked by relentless touring and commercial success, releasing nine studio albums to date, with their latest, God of Angels Trust, arriving in 2025 via Vertigo/Universal Music.[4] Key releases include their 2005 debut The Strength / The Sound / The Songs and the 2016 blockbuster Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie, which achieved five-times platinum status in Denmark and topped charts worldwide.[5][6] The band has amassed multiple platinum and gold certifications across Europe and the U.S., including for the single "A Warrior's Call," and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance in 2014.[7][8] Volbeat's live prowess has seen them share stages with icons like Metallica on major tours, including the WorldWired Tour, and perform at major festivals such as Knotfest and Coachella, solidifying their reputation as a dynamic force in modern rock.[9][10] With over a dozen No. 1 hits on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, including "Shotgun Blues" in 2021, they continue to dominate airwaves and arenas, appealing to fans with their high-energy performances and genre-defying songwriting.[11]History
Formation and early career (2001–2005)
Following the dissolution of his death metal band Dominus in 2000, Michael Poulsen founded Volbeat in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2001 as a new outlet for his musical interests, shifting toward a fusion of rockabilly and punk rock influences.[12][13][1] The band's initial lineup featured Poulsen on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, drummer Jon Larsen, bassist Anders Kjølholm, and lead guitarist Teddy Vang.[14] Volbeat quickly recorded a self-titled demo in 2002 at Take One Studio, produced by Morten Nilsson and Kåre Rock, containing early versions of tracks such as "Always," "Caroline," and "Everything Is Fine," which showcased their emerging rockabilly-punk sound.[15][16] The group followed this with the self-released EP Beat the Meat in 2004, featuring songs like "Pool of Booze," "Boa," and "Soulweeper #1," further honing their blend of energetic rockabilly riffs and punk attitude.[17] Volbeat's early live performances were primarily in Denmark, including a semifinal appearance on the national talent competition Live Contest, which helped build a local following despite challenges with lineup stability, as lead guitarist Teddy Vang departed shortly after the demo recordings.[18] Franz Gottschalk replaced Vang on lead guitar in 2003, stabilizing the group for subsequent shows and recordings.[14][19] In 2005, Volbeat signed with Mascot Records, leading to the release of their debut studio album The Strength/The Sound/The Songs on September 26, which emphasized their rockabilly roots through upbeat rhythms and Poulsen's gravelly vocals while incorporating punk energy.[20][21] The album achieved modest underground success in Denmark, peaking at number 18 on the Tracklisten chart and establishing the band as a rising act in the local rock scene.[21][22]Rise to prominence (2006–2009)
Volbeat's second studio album, Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil, was released on February 23, 2007, by Mascot Records, marking a significant step in the band's development as it blended punk energy with metal riffs and rockabilly undertones, often described as "Elvis metal 'n' roll."[23] The record debuted at number one on the Danish Albums Chart and sold over 35,000 copies in Denmark, establishing the band as a commercial force in their home country.[24] Key singles from the album included "Sad Man's Tongue," a track inspired by Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues," capturing themes of regret and redemption through its acoustic intro and driving rhythm.[25] Another standout, "Devil or the Blue Cat's Song," drew from dark punk perspectives akin to Glenn Danzig's style, exploring inner demons and addiction with raw, aggressive verses.[26] The band's live presence gained momentum during this era, highlighted by their performance at the Roskilde Festival on June 30, 2006, which earned a perfect 6/6-star review from the Danish newspaper BT for its energetic delivery and crowd engagement.[27] This appearance propelled Volbeat into larger venues across Denmark and sparked initial international exposure, with tours extending into Germany and Scandinavia starting in early 2007, including headline shows at venues like Tower in Bremen and Rockfabrik in Ludwigsburg.[28][29] Frontman Michael Poulsen's songwriting evolved notably, as he increasingly fused his rockabilly roots with heavier hybrid rock elements, drawing from diverse influences like Elvis Presley and punk acts to create more layered narratives rooted in films and literature.[30] Building on this momentum, Volbeat released their third album, Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood, on September 3, 2008, which further solidified their hybrid rock sound while achieving platinum certification in Denmark for sales exceeding 30,000 units.[31] The album's title track and others like "A Moment Forever" emphasized storytelling inspired by classic Western films and outlaw tales, reflecting Poulsen's growing interest in cinematic themes. To promote the release, the band embarked on the Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood Tour in October 2008, headlining across Europe with support from Stuck Mojo, including stops in Germany, the UK, and Scandinavia that drew larger audiences and expanded their regional fanbase.[32] This period marked Volbeat's transition from domestic upstarts to a prominent European act, driven by Poulsen's refined songwriting that balanced aggression with melodic hooks.Lineup changes and international success (2010–2015)
In 2010, Volbeat released their fourth studio album, Beyond Hell/Above Heaven, on September 10 through EMI in Denmark and later via Republic Records in the United States.[33] The album featured guest appearances by notable musicians, including Mercyful Fate guitarist Michael Denner on tracks like "7 Shots," alongside contributions from Napalm Death's Mark "Barney" Greenway and Kreator's Mille Petrozza.[34] It marked the band's breakthrough internationally, topping the album charts in Germany and achieving platinum status there, while debuting at No. 142 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and entering the Hard Rock Albums chart.[35][36] The album's release coincided with Volbeat's expansion into the U.S. market, including their first major American tours as support acts for Metallica on the World Magnetic Tour and AC/DC, which helped build a growing fanbase across North America.[37] By 2014, the band had progressed to headlining their own U.S. tours, such as the spring run with Trivium and Digital Summer, spanning from Denver to the East Coast, alongside festival appearances like Download Festival in the UK.[38][39] Volbeat's fifth album, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, arrived on April 5, 2013, via Vertigo/Universal, incorporating orchestral elements such as strings in its opening instrumental track and thematic storytelling inspired by Wild West outlaws and figures like Pearl Hart.[40][41] The record reached No. 1 in Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, while debuting at No. 9 on the Billboard 200— the highest chart position for a Danish act at the time—and topping the Hard Rock Albums chart.[42][43] In February 2013, shortly after producing Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, former Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano officially joined Volbeat as second guitarist, replacing the need for additional touring support and enhancing their live performances with dual-guitar dynamics during shows like his debut at Store Vega in Copenhagen.[44][45] This lineup adjustment solidified the band's stability leading into their rising global profile by mid-decade.Mainstream breakthrough (2016–2021)
In 2016, Volbeat signed with Republic Records, marking a significant step in their expansion into the U.S. market. Their sixth studio album, Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie, was released on June 3 through the label and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, becoming their first top-charting release in the United States. The album featured hit singles like "The Devil's Bleeding Crown," which peaked at No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock chart, and included collaborations such as Johan Olsen on "For Evigt" and Danko Jones on "Black Rose," blending the band's rockabilly-metal sound with guest vocals for added energy. The record achieved five-times platinum certification in Denmark, solidifying Volbeat's commercial dominance at home.[46] Volbeat's seventh album, Rewind, Replay, Rebound, arrived on August 2, 2019, also via Republic Records, and explored themes of personal reflection and mortality through tracks like "Die to Live," featuring Clutch frontman Neil Fallon. Produced by Jacob Hansen, the album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and earned gold certification in Denmark for sales exceeding 10,000 units. It continued the band's streak of chart-topping success in Europe, reaching No. 1 in their home country and several Scandinavian markets, while singles such as "Last Day Under the Sun" and "Leviathan" drove extensive touring across North America and Europe. The record's introspective lyrics, drawn from frontman Michael Poulsen's life experiences, added depth to Volbeat's signature hybrid style.[47][48] The band's eighth studio album, Servant of the Mind, was released on December 3, 2021, under Republic Records and topped charts in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden, while entering the Billboard 200 at No. 18. Inspired by supernatural and dark themes—including ghostly encounters Poulsen faced after moving into a new home—the album delved into horror-tinged narratives across songs like "The Sacred Stones" and "Shotgun Blues," evoking influences from classic heavy metal and occult storytelling. Lead single "Wait a Minute My Girl" reached No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, highlighting the band's continued radio dominance. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their 2020 touring plans, leading to the cancellation of a major U.S. leg with Clutch and The Picturebooks, as well as album delays; in response, Volbeat pivoted to virtual releases, including footage from prior shows to maintain fan engagement.[49][50]Recent developments (2022–present)
Following the release of their eighth studio album Servant of the Mind in 2021, Volbeat entered a period of hiatus, with the band largely inactive from touring and new recordings through much of 2022 and 2023, allowing frontman Michael Poulsen to focus on his death metal side project Asinhell.[51][52] This break provided the members time to recharge, as Poulsen later described the extended downtime as enabling a refreshed approach to their music.[53] In June 2023, after a decade with the band, guitarist Rob Caggiano departed Volbeat due to creative differences, prompting the group to enlist session guitarist Flemming C. Lund to fill in for their summer European tour that year.[54][55] The tour marked the band's last significant live performances before another pause, as they shifted focus inward without a permanent replacement for Caggiano at the time.[56] Volbeat opted out of touring entirely in 2024 to prioritize songwriting and recording for their next album, with Poulsen confirming in September that sessions were underway for a 2025 release.[57] This year-long creative retreat built on the band's evolving style, incorporating heavier riffs and spontaneous elements drawn from Poulsen's diverse influences.[58] The ninth studio album, God of Angels Trust, was announced in March 2025 and released on June 6, 2025, via Vertigo/Universal, featuring lead guitar contributions from Flemming C. Lund and praised for its unexpected freshness and intensified rock edge.[59][60] Poulsen highlighted the album's unorthodox production as a return to the band's raw, exploratory roots, blending their signature rockabilly-metal sound with bolder, riff-driven dynamics.[61] The band resumed live activity in December 2024, supporting Iron Maiden at shows in São Paulo, Brazil, on December 6 and 7—their first performances in 16 months—before launching a full 2025 world tour with headlining dates across Europe and North America starting in June.[62][63] This resurgence included high-profile stops and marked a return to consistent touring, with drummer Jon Larsen temporarily sitting out four North American dates in August 2025 due to family commitments, replaced by Jon Dette.[64] In a January 2025 video update, Poulsen affirmed the band's strong health and enthusiasm, noting the completion of God of Angels Trust and plans for extensive touring, while hinting at ongoing discussions to secure a permanent guitarist beyond Lund's session and touring role.[65]Musical style and influences
Musical style
Volbeat's musical style is characterized by a hybrid fusion of rockabilly, punk rock, heavy metal, and elements of hardcore, creating a distinctive sound that defies strict genre classification.[2] Frontman Michael Poulsen's raspy, baritone vocals, often layered with gang shouts in choruses, provide a gritty, energetic delivery that bridges punk's raw edge with metal's intensity.[66] This blend results in high-octane tracks featuring driving rhythms, twangy guitar lines reminiscent of 1950s rock 'n' roll, and aggressive riffs, as Poulsen himself describes it as "metallic rock 'n' roll" or "rock 'n' rollish metal."[67] The band's sound has evolved significantly since their 2005 debut album The Strength / The Sound / The Songs, which leaned heavily on rockabilly and punk influences with minimal metal aggression. Subsequent releases incorporated more pronounced heavy metal elements, such as thrash-inspired riffs and groove metal structures, while integrating swing, country, and orchestral flourishes—particularly evident in the 2013 album Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, which features cinematic arrangements and guest instrumentation like banjo and double bass to evoke a Western atmosphere.[68] By the mid-2010s, the addition of a second guitarist enabled dual guitar attacks, enhancing the production with layered electric textures alongside acoustic elements for dynamic contrast. Lyrically, Volbeat's songs revolve around themes of outlaws, horror, and personal narratives, often structured as concise, story-like vignettes inspired by historical figures and cinematic tropes.[68] Tracks like those on Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies draw from spaghetti Western motifs and eerie tales, such as the horror-infused "Room 24," blending narrative depth with the band's propulsive music.[68] Critics have praised Volbeat's style for its accessibility and genre-bending innovation, noting how it avoids pure metal categorization by prioritizing melodic hooks and cross-genre appeal over subgenre conformity.[69] This approach has been lauded for colliding old-school rockabilly with modern metal in an infectious manner, earning descriptions as a "mixture of hard rock, groove metal, rockabilly, some country, and a dollop of death metal."[70]Influences
Volbeat's music draws heavily from rockabilly and punk rock traditions, with frontman Michael Poulsen citing Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash as foundational influences that shaped the band's energetic rhythms and storytelling vocals.[71][72] Poulsen has described Presley's rock 'n' roll swagger and Cash's authoritative delivery as key to his singing style, evident in Volbeat's blend of upbeat tempos and narrative-driven songs.[71] Additionally, punk acts like Social Distortion provided the raw aggression and streetwise edge that defined the band's early sound, with Poulsen naming their track "Down Here (With The Rest Of Us)" as a personal favorite that resonated with his life experiences.[73] The band's metal influences stem from Poulsen's deep roots in heavy music, including thrash pioneers Metallica and Megadeth, particularly the latter's Dave Mustaine era, which inspired Volbeat's intricate guitar work and high-energy riffs.[74] Poulsen, who began in death metal with his prior band Dominus, has highlighted these groups as ongoing inspirations for the heavier elements in Volbeat's catalog.[75] Danish heavy metal legends Mercyful Fate also play a significant role, with Poulsen expressing admiration for their occult themes and vocal theatrics, even collaborating with frontman King Diamond on the track "Room 24."[76] Classic heavy metal from Iron Maiden further contributes to the band's narrative lyricism and epic structures, as Poulsen credits discovering their albums with broadening his songwriting approach.[77] Country and swing elements from artists like Hank Williams infuse Volbeat's music with a rhythmic bounce and emotional depth, helping to bridge their rockabilly origins with broader rock appeal.[78] These influences manifest distinctly across the band's discography: the punk aggression from Social Distortion dominates the raw, high-octane energy of early albums like Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil (2007), while the polished metal precision from Metallica and Megadeth becomes more prominent in later works such as Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie (2016), refining Volbeat's sound into a more arena-ready hybrid.[74][73]Band members
Current members
The current core lineup of Volbeat, as of November 2025, consists of founder Michael Poulsen on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Jon Larsen on drums, and Kaspar Boye Larsen on bass, with Flemming C. Lund serving as touring lead guitarist. This group has driven the band's output, including their ninth studio album God of Angels Trust, released on June 6, 2025, via Vertigo/Universal Music, and their ongoing 2025 world tour featuring dates across North America and Europe.[79][80][81] Michael Poulsen, born April 1, 1975, in Copenhagen, Denmark, founded Volbeat in 2001 following the dissolution of his previous band Dominus, enlisting longtime collaborator Jon Larsen to establish the group's rock 'n' roll and heavy metal fusion sound. As the band's primary songwriter, Poulsen has penned the majority of Volbeat's material, blending influences from Elvis Presley, Social Distortion, and Metallica into their signature style, and he continues to lead performances on the 2025 tour.[82][83] Jon Larsen, also from Copenhagen, has been Volbeat's drummer since the band's inception in 2001, providing rhythmic stability through multiple lineup shifts and contributing to the production of albums like God of Angels Trust. His tenure marks him as one of the longest-serving members, with a background in Danish metal scenes that helped shape the band's early energy; despite briefly missing four North American tour dates in summer 2025 due to family commitments—filled by session drummer Jon Dette—Larsen remains a full-time member.[82][64] Kaspar Boye Larsen joined Volbeat as bassist in May 2016, following the departure of original member Anders Kjølholm, bringing his experience from Danish rock and metal acts including MODSTAND and a history of filling in for the band as early as 2006. With a musical upbringing rooted in Denmark's heavy music scene, Larsen has integrated into the rhythm section, co-writing elements for recent releases and supporting the 2025 tour's dynamic live sets.[84][85] Flemming C. Lund, from The Arcane Order, has served as touring and session lead guitarist since June 2023 after Rob Caggiano's exit, delivering solos on God of Angels Trust and performing on the album's promotional tours. His aggressive riffing style, honed in death metal contexts, adds intensity to Volbeat's live shows, including the 2025 itinerary.[86][80]Former members
Franz Gottschalk (also known as Franz Hellboss) served as Volbeat's lead guitarist from 2002 to 2006. As an early member, he contributed guitar parts to the band's self-titled debut album released in 2005, helping establish their initial rockabilly-metal sound.[87] Gottschalk departed in December 2006 due to differing personalities and working methods off stage, with the split described as amicable by the band.[88] Thomas Bredahl joined Volbeat as lead guitarist in 2006, replacing Gottschalk, and remained until November 2011. He played a key role in the band's rising popularity, contributing guitar to three albums: Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil (2007), Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood (2008), and Beyond Hell/Above Heaven (2010), while bringing high-energy performances to early live shows.[89] The band announced his departure as a mutual decision akin to the ups and downs of a marriage, emphasizing no major conflicts.[89] Anders Kjølholm was Volbeat's founding bassist from 2001 to 2015, providing backing vocals and a solid rhythmic foundation that supported the band's evolution from underground rock to international success. He appeared on the first five studio albums, including Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies (2013), where his playing enhanced the group's polished heavy rock style.[90] Kjølholm left in November 2015 through a natural, drama-free mutual agreement as the band planned extensive future touring and recording.[91] Rob Caggiano served as lead guitarist from 2013 to 2023, joining after his time with Anthrax and infusing Volbeat's music with intricate harmonies and production expertise. He was instrumental on four albums—Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies (2013), Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie (2016), Rewind, Replay, Rebound (2019), and Servant of the Mind (2021)—helping drive the band's mainstream breakthrough with heavier riffs and dynamic arrangements.[92] Caggiano parted ways in June 2023 after 10 years, citing the end of their musical partnership, which began straining during the COVID-19 pandemic and remote recording for Servant of the Mind, leading to creative differences.[93] Other former members include Teddy Vang, who played lead guitar from 2001 to 2002 as part of the original lineup before the band's first album. No specific reason for his departure was publicly detailed, but he contributed to early demos and the group's formation.[87]Discography

Produced by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios, the effort channels raw intensity on songs like "By a Monster's Hand" and "Demonic Depression", marking the band's return with a focus on trust and resilience themes, and topping charts in multiple European countries.[101][102]Singles and extended plays
Volbeat's early extended plays were limited, with the band initially distributing demo recordings before securing a record deal. Their first notable EP-like release was a 2002 demo featuring four tracks in a raw, garage rock style, though it remained unofficial and unavailable commercially.[103] The band's breakthrough singles emerged from their 2010 album Beyond Hell/Above Heaven, including "A Warrior's Call," which served as a promotional standalone track and topped the Billboard Active Rock chart in February 2012, marking one of their earliest U.S. radio successes.[104] Later, "Lola Montez" from the 2013 album Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies gained prominence through its cinematic music video, peaking at No. 6 on the Denmark Airplay chart and reaching No. 17 on the Billboard Canada Rock chart.[105] In 2016, "Black Rose" featuring Danko Jones became a major hit from Seal the Deal & Let's Boogie, topping the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart for one week in June 2017 and securing Volbeat's sixth No. 1 on that ranking.[106] The track's energetic rockabilly-metal fusion contributed to its airplay dominance across North American rock stations. "Die to Live," released in 2019 from Rewind, Replay, Rebound and featuring Clutch's Neil Fallon, topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart in March 2020, breaking the record for the most No. 1s by a European act on the tally at that time (Volbeat's sixth).[107] Post-2021 releases include singles from Servant of the Mind (2021), such as "Wait a Minute My Girl," which reached No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart in August 2021, Volbeat's ninth such achievement.[108] For their 2025 album God of Angels Trust, the lead single "By a Monster's Hand" debuted in March and topped the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart in May 2025, marking their 11th No. 1.[109][101] Additional singles from the album include "Time Will Heal," released May 15, 2025, which topped the chart in October 2025, becoming Volbeat's 12th No. 1.[110]| Single | Release Year | Album | Peak Chart Position |
