Daniel Menzel
Daniel Menzel (born 13 September 1991) is an Australian former professional Australian rules footballer and current football executive, best known for his tenure as a forward in the Australian Football League (AFL) with the Geelong Football Club and Sydney Swans, where he overcame multiple severe knee injuries to play 80 senior games and kick 143 goals.[1][2] After retiring from the AFL in 2019, he continued his playing career in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), achieving further success including a premiership and leading goalkicker award, before transitioning to coaching and administration roles.[3][4] Selected by Geelong with the 17th pick in the 2009 AFL National Draft from Central Districts in the SANFL, Menzel debuted in Round 20 of the 2010 season at age 18, showing early promise as a versatile forward with strong marking and goal-sense abilities.[5] His career was dramatically interrupted by a series of knee injuries, beginning with a right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture in the 2011 qualifying final against Hawthorn, which sidelined him for the Cats' premiership-winning campaign.[6] This was followed by three left ACL reconstructions in 2012, 2013, and another setback, resulting in four knee surgeries by age 21 and nearly three years out of the game.[7][8] Despite these challenges, Menzel made a remarkable return in 2016, playing 18 games and booting 33 goals in a standout season that highlighted his resilience.[9] Menzel's time at Geelong spanned nine seasons, during which he played 73 AFL matches and scored 136 goals, often hampered by recurring injuries including groin issues that required injections and further rehabilitation.[2][10] Delisted by the Cats at the end of 2018, he signed with the Sydney Swans as a delisted free agent, where he managed seven games and seven goals in 2019 before being delisted again.[11][12] Transitioning to the SANFL, Menzel joined Woodville-West Torrens in 2020 after a stint at Central Districts, playing 37 league games and kicking 97 goals over four seasons, culminating in a 2021 premiership win and earning the Ken Farmer Medal in 2022 as the competition's leading goalkicker with 51 goals.[3][13][4] Retiring from playing in July 2023, Menzel took on a head coaching role with the newly formed Coorong Cats in the River Murray Football League for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, leading the team to premierships in both years as player-coach.[14][15][16] In August 2025, he was appointed General Manager of Football at the Norwood Football Club in the SANFL, leveraging his extensive playing and coaching experience to oversee the club's football operations.[14] Additionally, Menzel founded Mental Toughness Mental Fortitude (MTMF), a sports consulting business focused on mental resilience training, drawing from his own journey through injury and recovery.[17]Early life and junior career
Early life
Daniel Menzel was born on 13 September 1991 in Golden Grove, a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia.[18] He grew up in nearby Greenwith in a football-focused family led by his single mother, Cathy Menzel, who raised six sons including Daniel, his older brothers Adam, Matt, and Chris, and younger brothers Sam and Troy.[19] Cathy played a central role in the family's sporting life, managing transportation for her sons' training and matches across suburban Adelaide using the family's van, while enforcing strict household rules to balance school and sport.[19] The Menzels' household was immersed in Australian rules football from an early age, with multiple brothers developing skills in local competitions that fostered a competitive environment.[19] Daniel's younger brother Troy followed a similar path and was selected by the Carlton Football Club with pick 11 in the 2012 AFL National Draft, where he played 7 senior matches.[20]Junior football
Menzel began his junior football with the Golden Grove Kookaburras before joining the Central Districts Football Club, competing in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) under-18 competition.[21][18] There, he developed as a versatile player capable of contributing across multiple positions, showcasing strong athleticism and skill that drew attention from AFL scouts.[22] He earned representative honors for South Australia at national junior carnivals, including the 2009 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. Playing primarily as a skilful half-back, Menzel provided significant drive from defence, ranking second overall in the competition for effective kicks (52) and third overall for long kicks (28), while also placing second on his team for rebound 50s (14). His endurance and football intelligence were highlighted as key strengths during these matches.[22] These standout performances in the under-18 ranks elevated his draft stock, leading to his selection by the Geelong Cats at pick 17 in the 2009 AFL National Draft.[22]AFL career
Geelong Cats
Menzel was drafted by the Geelong Cats with the 17th pick in the 2009 AFL National Draft from Central Districts in the SANFL.[5] He made his AFL debut in Round 20 of the 2010 season against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium, recording 12 disposals and one goal in Geelong's 101-point victory.[5] This appearance marked the beginning of a promising start, as he played three games that year, showcasing his forward potential with a goal on debut.[22] In 2011, Menzel's second season, he emerged as a key forward, playing 18 games and kicking 28 goals.[23] A highlight came in Round 13 when he booted four goals and gathered 15 disposals against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium, earning him the NAB AFL Rising Star nomination for that round.[24] His form peaked in the final home-and-away round, where he kicked five goals against Collingwood, but tragedy struck shortly after in the qualifying final against Hawthorn on September 9, when he ruptured his right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) after scoring two early goals, sidelining him for the remainder of Geelong's premiership-winning campaign.[5] This injury required his first knee reconstruction surgery.[25] Menzel's injury woes intensified over the following years, with multiple ACL tears and surgeries disrupting his career. In June 2012, while playing for Geelong's VFL affiliate against North Ballarat at Simonds Stadium, he ruptured his left ACL, necessitating a second reconstruction.[5] Complications arose in December 2012 during pre-season training, leading to ligament advanced reinforcement system (LARS) surgery on the left knee, followed by the graft snapping in April 2013 during a VFL match against Box Hill.[5] Further procedures in May and August 2013 addressed the left knee with bone grafts and a new graft insertion, bringing his total to four knee reconstructions by age 21—believed to be among the highest for an AFL player at that stage.[25] These setbacks, including tendonitis that required additional surgery in May 2014, forced him to miss the entire 2012, 2013, and 2014 AFL seasons.[5] After extensive rehabilitation, including a trip to the United States in November 2013 to consult knee specialist Bill Knowles, Menzel returned to competitive football in the VFL in July 2015 against Werribee, where he recorded 17 disposals and 10 clearances before being substituted.[5] He made his AFL comeback in August 2015 against Collingwood at the MCG—1,450 days after his last league game—contributing to a strong team performance in a season that saw Geelong reach the preliminary finals.[5] Building momentum, Menzel played a breakout 2016 season with 18 games and 33 goals, followed by his career-best year in 2017, where he featured in 19 games and kicked 40 goals, ranking second among Geelong's goalkickers behind Tom Hawkins.[26] Despite being dropped for the finals, his consistency and goal-scoring prowess highlighted his resilience post-injuries.[27] Menzel's time at Geelong concluded amid ongoing injury challenges in 2018, where he played 13 games and kicked 27 goals despite setbacks limiting his availability. On October 24, 2018, the Cats delisted him as part of end-of-season list management, ending his tenure after being drafted nearly a decade earlier.[28] Over his AFL career with Geelong from 2010 to 2018, he played 73 games and kicked 136 goals, a tally impacted significantly by his injury history.[2]Sydney Swans
In November 2018, Daniel Menzel joined the Sydney Swans as a delisted free agent on a one-year contract, providing him an opportunity to revive his AFL career after being released by Geelong.[29][11] Menzel made his debut for the Swans in round 12 of the 2019 season against Geelong at the SCG, where he showed glimpses of his forward potential but was hampered by ongoing fitness concerns stemming from prior knee injuries.[30] Over the course of the season, he played seven games and kicked seven goals, including a notable performance with two goals against Melbourne in round 22.[2][31] Despite these contributions, Menzel struggled with inconsistent form and a pre-season groin injury that restricted his training and selection opportunities throughout 2019.[32] These challenges culminated in his delisting by the Swans on October 29, 2019, effectively ending his top-level AFL tenure after just one season in Sydney.[33][12]Career statistics
