Danny Jones
Danny Jones (born Daniel Alan David Jones on 12 March 1986) is an English singer, songwriter, musician, and television personality, best known as one of the lead vocalists and the lead guitarist of the pop-rock band McFly.[1][2] Formed in London in 2003, McFly rose to fame in 2004 as a supporting act for Busted, quickly achieving commercial success with their debut single "5 Colours in Her Hair," which topped the UK Singles Chart, and their album Room on the 3rd Floor, which became the fastest-selling debut album in UK history by a British band.[1][3] The band, consisting of Jones alongside Tom Fletcher, Dougie Poynter, and Harry Judd, has released seven studio albums, sold over 10 million records worldwide, and earned multiple awards, including a 2005 Brit Award for Best British Pop Act and several Smash Hits Awards.[4][5] Jones has co-written many of McFly's hits and contributed to their evolution from teen pop to more mature rock influences across albums like Wonderland (2005) and Motion in the Ocean (2006).[1] Beyond music, Jones has pursued acting and television roles, appearing in the film Just My Luck (2006) and serving as a coach on The Voice Kids UK from 2017 to 2023, as well as on The Voice UK in 2024.[6][2] In 2024, he achieved further prominence by winning the fifth series of The Masked Singer UK as Piranha and the twenty-fourth series of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, where he was crowned King of the Jungle after 23 days in the Australian jungle.[2][7] Jones married model and former Miss England Georgia Horsley in 2014, and the couple have one son, Cooper Alf Jones, born in January 2018. In March 2025, Jones was involved in a public controversy after footage emerged of him kissing fellow I'm a Celebrity... contestant Maura Higgins at a BRIT Awards afterparty, prompting reports of marital strain; however, the couple has since reconciled and appeared together publicly.[8][3][9]Early life
Childhood and family background
Danny Jones was born on 12 March 1986 in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England.[3] He grew up in the Breightmet area of Bolton, where his mother, Kathy Jones, operated a local hairdressing business.[1] Jones has a sister named Vicky. His father, Alan Jones, played a significant role in nurturing Jones's early passion for music during his childhood. Alan purchased a guitar for his son and frequently took him to live music performances, fostering a deep appreciation for rock and blues genres that shaped Jones's interests.[10] However, Jones faced challenges in his youth, including bullying at school for his enthusiasm in playing the guitar, which made him feel isolated among peers who viewed musical pursuits as uncool.[11] Family dynamics became strained in Jones's late teens, culminating in his father's departure from the household when Jones was 19, following a divorce from Kathy.[12] This separation marked a profound emotional challenge, contributing to ongoing issues with anxiety that Jones has since discussed publicly as stemming from feelings of abandonment during his formative years.[13] Despite these difficulties, his mother's steadfast presence offered stability, helping him navigate the transition from childhood to adolescence.Education and early influences
Danny Jones attended Thornleigh Salesian College and, briefly, Haberdashers' Boys' School, secondary schools where he experienced bullying, which he later discussed as a challenging aspect of his early years, but the environment helped nurture his growing interest in performance.[14][15] Following secondary school, Jones pursued formal musical training at Bury College in Greater Manchester, where he earned a BTEC National Diploma in music.[16] This program provided him with practical skills in songwriting, performance, and recording, solidifying his passion for pop-rock and influencing his guitar-playing style inspired by bands like Blink-182.[17] From a young age, Jones and his older sister Vicky shared a keen interest in music, even appearing together on the television talent show Steps to the Stars while he was still in school.[18] A pivotal formative experience came in 2003 at age 17, when Jones auditioned in Manchester for a boy band project modeled after Busted, mistakenly arriving in an Oasis-inspired outfit that highlighted his punk-rock leanings.[17] Although he did not advance, the audition introduced him to aspiring musician Tom Fletcher, fostering a collaboration that ignited Jones's ambition to form his own band and pursue a professional music career.[19] This encounter marked a turning point, shifting his focus from solo aspirations to group dynamics and live performance.Music career
Formation and role in McFly
McFly was formed in 2003 when Danny Jones met Tom Fletcher during auditions at a London record label, following Fletcher's unsuccessful tryout for the band Busted. Jones had arrived for an audition with the boy band V, mistakenly assuming it required a rock-oriented performance similar to Busted, which led to an impromptu collaboration with Fletcher after both were rejected. The duo recruited drummer Harry Judd and bassist Dougie Poynter, completing the lineup, and the band was named after the character Marty McFly from the film Back to the Future. They quickly gained traction by supporting Busted on their A Present for Everyone tour in 2004, which helped build their early fanbase.[20][17] Within McFly, Jones served as one of the lead vocalists alongside Fletcher, the band's primary lead guitarist, and a key songwriter, contributing to the group's pop-rock sound through his harmonica and guitar work. He co-wrote several of their early hits, including the debut single "5 Colours in Her Hair" and follow-up "Obviously," which helped define McFly's energetic, youthful style. Jones's guitar solos and vocal harmonies became signature elements in tracks like "That Girl," showcasing his instrumental prowess and creative input in the band's songwriting process.[1][3] The band's rapid ascent began with their debut single "5 Colours in Her Hair," released on 29 March 2004, which topped the UK Singles Chart for two weeks and marked them as the youngest group to achieve a number-one debut since The Beatles. This success propelled their first album, Room on the 3rd Floor, released on 5 July 2004, straight to the top of the UK Albums Chart, featuring additional hits like "Obviously" and "That Girl." Subsequent releases included the second album Wonderland on 29 August 2005, which also reached number one and included singles such as "All About You/You've Got a Friend," and later Above the Noise in 2010, produced by Dallas Austin, blending pop-rock with electronic elements for tracks like "Party Girl." Over their initial run, McFly released five studio albums, achieving multiple platinum certifications and establishing themselves as a staple of mid-2000s British pop.[21][22][23][24] After a brief return with the Anthology Tour in 2016, McFly entered an indefinite hiatus, during which members pursued individual projects amid reported internal tensions from prior collaborations. The band reunited in 2019 for initial shows, followed by releases including The Lost Songs and Young Dumb Thrills in 2020. Their full comeback aligned with their 20th anniversary in 2023, including a sold-out UK tour and the release of their seventh studio album, Power to Play. This milestone revival reaffirmed their enduring popularity, leading to the announcement of the "Busted vs. McFly" tour, a competitive battle-of-the-bands format with Busted, which commenced on 16 September 2025 in Birmingham and continued through November across UK arenas.[25][26][27]McBusted collaboration
In November 2013, Danny Jones, along with fellow McFly members Tom Fletcher, Dougie Poynter, and Harry Judd, teamed up with Busted's James Bourne and Matt Willis to form the supergroup McBusted, with Judd taking over drumming duties in place of Busted's former member Charlie Simpson, who had departed the band in 2005.[28][29] This collaboration built on McFly's established success in the UK pop-rock scene to create a short-lived but high-profile project blending the two bands' styles.[30] The group released their self-titled debut album, McBusted, on 1 December 2014, which debuted and peaked at number 9 on the UK Albums Chart.[31] Key singles from the album included "Air Guitar," which reached number 12 on the UK Singles Chart, and "What Happened to Your Band?," peaking at number 69.[32] Jones contributed significantly as a lead vocalist and guitarist, delivering prominent vocals on tracks like "Air Guitar" and "Riding On My Bike," while co-writing several songs, including "Air Guitar," "What Happened to Your Band?," and "Riding On My Bike."[33] McBusted embarked on an extensive UK arena tour in 2014, comprising 36 dates from April to June, followed by the 21-date Most Excellent Adventure Tour from March to April 2015.[34] The group disbanded later in 2015, shortly after the tour's conclusion and amid Busted's reformation with Simpson's return.[25]Solo endeavors
In 2018, Danny Jones launched his solo music career with the release of his debut single "Is This Still Love" on 6 July. Co-written and co-produced by Jones with Seton Daunt and Ash Howes, the track marked his first independent venture outside of McFly and achieved a peak position of number 94 on the UK Singles Chart Update.[35][36][37] Building on this, Jones issued several follow-up singles in 2019, including "Talk In The Morning" and "Igns", culminating in his self-titled debut EP released on 5 July. The EP featured five tracks—"Muddy Water", "Bad Habits", "Igns", "Talk In The Morning", and "Without Me"—highlighting Jones's pop-rock sensibilities and vocal range in a more intimate format. In addition to his recording efforts, Jones took on production duties for McFly's seventh studio album, Power to Play, released in 2023, collaborating with longtime associate Jason Perry to shape the band's sound.[38] Jones revisited his solo output in 2024 with a cover of Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now", recorded alongside McFly bandmates Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd and released on 19 February. The single, inspired by Jones's standout performance on The Masked Singer, peaked at number 3 on the UK Singles Downloads Chart. In June 2018, Jones announced and performed his first solo live show at London's O2 Academy Islington on 25 June, with subsequent limited solo appearances often linked to his broader media engagements.[39]Television and other media
Coaching and judging roles
Jones began his coaching career on the children's singing competition The Voice Kids UK in 2017, serving as one of the inaugural coaches alongside will.i.am and Pixie Lott for the show's debut season on ITV. He continued as a coach for subsequent seasons, including series 2 in 2018, series 3 in 2019 (where his contestant Sam Wilkinson won), series 4 in 2020 (with Paloma Faith joining), series 5 in 2021 (with Melanie C), and series 6 in 2022/2023 (with Ronan Keating).[40][41][42][43] His emphasis on vocal technique and stage presence helped guide several young talents through the blind auditions, battle rounds, and live shows. In 2024, Jones expanded his role to the main The Voice UK series, sharing a double chair with McFly bandmate Tom Fletcher in a UK television first for the format. The duo's collaborative approach, leveraging their shared musical background, led to innovative pitches and team strategies, culminating in their contestant Ava Mannings winning the thirteenth season.[44][43] In 2025, Jones was announced to return as a coach for The Voice UK.[45] Jones and his wife, Georgia Horsley, also judged on MTV's reality competition Just Tattoo of Us for its first two seasons in 2017 and 2018, where couples and friends designed surprise tattoos for each other, often leading to dramatic reveals and reactions. Throughout his coaching tenure, Jones has drawn on his experience as McFly's lead vocalist to focus on building contestants' confidence in vocal delivery and performance charisma, as seen in his guidance of standout acts like the 2019 winner Sam Wilkinson.[46]Reality television participation
Danny Jones has made several notable appearances as a contestant on reality television competition programs, showcasing his competitive spirit and charitable commitments alongside his entertainment background. In 2024, Jones competed on the fifth series of The Masked Singer UK, performing in disguise as the character Piranha. His performances, which included renditions of songs like "All About You" and "It's All Coming Back to Me Now," impressed the judges and audience, leading to his unmasking as the winner in the grand final on 17 February. This victory marked a significant achievement in his reality TV career, highlighting his vocal talents beyond his music endeavors.[47] Later that year, Jones entered the Australian jungle for the 24th series of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, airing from 17 November to 8 December on ITV. Over 23 days, he participated in various Bushtucker Trials, earning stars for camp meals and forming bonds with fellow contestants, including a notable friendship with Oti Mabuse. Jones emerged as the winner, crowned King of the Jungle after defeating runner-up Coleen Rooney and third-place finisher Reverend Richard Coles in the public vote, with over 10 million votes cast via the ITV app. This triumph made him the second McFly member to win the series, following bandmate Dougie Poynter's 2011 victory.[7][48] Jones has also been a regular participant in Soccer Aid for UNICEF, the annual charity football match broadcast on ITV to raise funds for children's causes. He first joined the England celebrity team in 2010 at Old Trafford, playing as a midfielder and contributing to the event's efforts that year. He returned in 2012 at Wembley Stadium, again representing England in the competitive fixture against the Rest of the World team. His repeated involvement underscores his dedication to the charity, having donned the number 7 shirt in multiple editions and contributing to overall fundraising exceeding £15 million in recent events.[49]Guest appearances and hosting
Jones has appeared as a panelist on the BBC music quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks across multiple episodes spanning 2006 to 2023.[6] In the 2023 season 31 premiere, he joined as a special guest alongside hosts Greg Davies and team captains Noel Fielding and Jamali Maddix, participating in the show's signature rounds of music trivia and comedy challenges.[50] He made frequent guest appearances on the ITV2 panel show Celebrity Juice between 2010 and 2015, often as part of McFly promotions or solo segments.[51] Notable episodes include the 2010 McFly special, where the band competed in team-based games hosted by Keith Lemon, and a 2011 installment featuring Jones alongside team captains Holly Willoughby and Fearne Cotton.[52][53] In 2007, Jones and McFly had a brief cameo in the Doctor Who episode "The Sound of Drums," appearing as themselves in a promotional endorsement scene tied to the storyline's election plot.[54] McFly, including Jones, hosted and performed on episodes of BBC's Top of the Pops during 2005 and 2006, introducing chart acts and delivering live renditions of their hits like "All About You" and "I Wanna Hold You."[55] On radio, Jones contributed to BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge in 2010 as part of McFly, where the band performed a cover of Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" and discussed their upcoming album Above the Noise.[56]Personal life
Marriage and family
Danny Jones began his relationship with Georgia Horsley, a former model and influencer, in 2009 after meeting her at a Miss London event.[8][57] Horsley, who was crowned Miss England in 2007, has been profoundly deaf in her right ear since contracting suspected meningitis as a child.[58][59] The couple became engaged during a holiday in Cyprus in 2013 and married on 2 August 2014 at St Mary's Priory Church in Malton, North Yorkshire.[60][61] Jones and Horsley welcomed their first child, son Cooper Alf Jones, on 27 January 2018 at 1:36 a.m., weighing 7 pounds 15 ounces; the birth occurred just 36 minutes after they arrived at the hospital, nine days past the due date.[62][63] In March 2025, at the BRIT Awards afterparty, Jones was photographed appearing to share a drunken kiss with television personality Maura Higgins, sparking widespread media attention.[64] This incident led to a temporary separation, with Horsley moving out of their family home in March 2025 and issuing an ultimatum regarding their future.[65][66] By July 2025, the couple had reconciled, appearing together lovingly during family outings, including a night out at a Wembley concert.[67] In September 2025, Jones and Higgins reunited awkwardly onstage at the National Television Awards to accept an award for I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, after which Horsley took a solo holiday.[68][69]Health and advocacy
Danny Jones has been open about his long-standing struggles with anxiety, which intensified following the McFly hiatus in 2016. He has described experiencing severe panic attacks that affected his work, health, and sleep, including a notable incident during a live television appearance. Jones began therapy at age 19 to manage these issues, attributing much of his anxiety to the emotional impact of his parents' separation when he was a teenager.[13][70] In advocacy, Jones serves as an ambassador for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), a suicide prevention charity, where he promotes mental health awareness through personal storytelling and events. In 2025, he participated in the inaugural Trek for Tomorrow, a nationwide initiative by CALM to encourage conversations about suicide prevention and support those affected by mental health challenges.[71][72] He has also contributed to cancer-related causes, such as busking in London's Covent Garden in 2005 to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.[73] Jones supports deafness awareness efforts alongside his wife, Georgia Horsley, who became deaf in her right ear after contracting meningitis as a child. Horsley has actively raised awareness about hearing loss and accessible technology, and Jones has publicly endorsed her campaigns to highlight challenges faced by those with hearing impairments.[74][75] Regarding sobriety, Jones has discussed how alcohol consumption became a habitual coping mechanism before performances earlier in his career, but he has since reflected on the benefits of moderation for his mental well-being.[76]Works
