Friede Springer
Friede Springer (née Riewerts; born 15 August 1942) is a German publisher and principal owner of Axel Springer SE, Europe's largest digital publishing house by revenue, which includes major outlets such as Bild and Welt.[1][2]
Originally employed as a nanny for Axel Springer's children in 1965, she married the media magnate in 1978—his fifth wife—and inherited a controlling stake in the company following his death in 1985.[1][2] As vice chairwoman of the supervisory board, she has played a key role in maintaining the firm's editorial principles, including staunch support for German reunification, transatlantic alliances, and the state of Israel, while overseeing strategic decisions such as share repurchases and expansions into digital media.[3][4]
Through the Friede Springer Foundation and Desiderius Erasmus Foundation, she funds projects promoting journalism, democratic values, and social welfare, reflecting her commitment to the legacy of her late husband.[4] Her influence extends to philanthropy, including awards for global economic contributions and support for Jewish causes, positioning her as one of Germany's wealthiest individuals with a net worth tied to the media conglomerate's performance.[1][5]
