Geoje
Geoje-si (Korean: 거제시) is a city in South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, primarily comprising Geoje Island—the second-largest island in the country, spanning approximately 383 square kilometers—along with over 80 smaller surrounding islands, for a total administrative area of 409 square kilometers.[1][2][3] The city, with a population of around 250,000, is connected to the mainland through the Geoga Grand Bridge linking to Busan and the Geoje Bridge to Tongyeong, enabling efficient transport and supporting its economy dominated by shipbuilding.[4][1][5] Geoje hosts major shipyards operated by Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Heavy Industries, which drive local employment and contribute significantly to South Korea's maritime industry, though the sector has experienced cyclical fluctuations tied to global demand.[6][7] The island's rugged terrain, coastal landscapes, and historical naval sites also attract tourism, complementing its industrial character.[1]
