Debut and early roles
Han Ji-eun made her acting debut in 2010 with the independent film Ghost (also known as Be With Me), directed by Park Ki-hyung, where she played the supporting role of Eun-ji opposite Han Ye-ri.[11] This role marked her entry into the South Korean film industry following her graduation from Dongduk Women's University with a degree in broadcasting and entertainment, which provided foundational skills for her career start.[12] Throughout the early 2010s, Han continued to build her resume with small but varied supporting parts in films, often portraying everyday or professional figures. Notable among these were her appearance as a restaurant interviewer in the heist thriller The Con Artists (2014), the character Mi-ae in the comedy Miss Granny (2014), a pictorial model in the romantic comedy A Dramatic Night (also known as Love Guide for Dumpees, 2015), and a high school Korean language teacher in the drama The Umbilical Cord (2015).[12] These roles, while brief, showcased her versatility in genres ranging from comedy to thriller, though they remained peripheral to main narratives. On television, Han's early forays were similarly guest appearances in popular dramas, including a bit part as a Bitnara show member in the historical series Lights and Shadows (2011-2012), a girl pretending to be a friend's acquaintance in the romantic comedy Fated to Love You (2014), an actress cameo in the family drama Five Enough (2016), and Cha Joon's blind date in the industry satire Entourage (2016). As a newcomer during this period, she encountered substantial hurdles in establishing herself, including years of career uncertainty after her debut where she supported herself through part-time jobs, handled self-management without agency representation, and grappled with typecasting that confined her to minor roles amid the competitive 2010s entertainment landscape.[13]Rise to prominence
Han Ji-eun's breakthrough came in 2017 with her supporting role as Han Ye-won in the crime thriller film Real, directed by Lee Sa-rang, where she portrayed a complex character involved in the underworld, earning her recognition after auditioning against over 4,200 actresses for the part.[14] This role marked a significant step up from her earlier minor appearances, showcasing her ability to handle intense dramatic scenes alongside lead actor Kim Soo-hyun. She played Ae Weol, a gisaeng with unrequited feelings, in the historical romantic comedy drama 100 Days My Prince on tvN, contributing to the series' popularity with its blend of humor and Joseon-era intrigue.[16] That same year, in the zombie action film Rampant, she portrayed Royal Noble Consort Gyeong, a cunning court figure amid the outbreak chaos, adding depth to the ensemble cast led by Hyun Bin.[17] She also appeared as Kang Seung-hye in the thriller Door Lock, where her role as a colleague to the protagonist amplified the film's tension around home invasion themes.[18] On television, her supporting turn as Park Sun-joo in the romance drama Twelve Nights on Channel A explored themes of fleeting connections, building on her growing screen presence.[12] By 2019, Han achieved a major milestone with her first leading role as Hwang Han-joo, a single mother navigating life and relationships, in the JTBC slice-of-life drama Be Melodramatic, which praised her for bringing authenticity to modern women's struggles and helped solidify her appeal in relatable, character-driven stories. She made a brief guest appearance in the tvN black comedy Psychopath Diary as a woman arguing with the protagonist in episode 2, demonstrating her range in lighter, quirky scenarios.[19] These projects from 2017 to 2019, spanning thrillers, historicals, and everyday dramas, underscored Han's adaptability and led to an expanded fanbase, transitioning her from peripheral parts to roles that garnered critical notice and broader visibility.Recent developments
