Birth and family background
Joris Kayembe Ditu was born on 8 August 1994 in Brussels, Belgium.[1][4] He hails from a close-knit family of Congolese descent, with his parents Emmanuel and Jacqueline instilling strong African values, including the use of the Lingala language at home.[5] Kayembe has a younger brother named Rayan, and the family maintains frequent contact while supporting his football career.[5] The household in Brussels has also welcomed close friends like Samuel Bastien, whom they adopted into the family circle around 2014.[5]Introduction to football
Joris Kayembe, born in Brussels, Belgium, on 8 August 1994, began his involvement in football at a young age through local youth academies in the city. He joined the youth setup of Scup Dieleghem Jette in 2000, at the age of six, marking the start of his structured training in the sport.[1] Kayembe progressed through the ranks at Scup Dieleghem Jette for six years, developing foundational skills in a community-based environment typical of Belgian grassroots football. In 2006, he transferred to FC Brussels, where he spent the next three years advancing in a more competitive youth system, focusing on technical and tactical development.[1] By 2009, at age 15, Kayembe moved to the renowned academy of Standard de Liège, one of Belgium's leading clubs for nurturing young talent. This period represented a pivotal phase in his early career, providing exposure to higher-level coaching and facilities that prepared him for professional opportunities abroad.[1][6]Club career
Youth career and early professional steps
Kayembe began his youth football career in his hometown of Brussels, joining the academy of Scup Dieleghem Jette at the age of six in 2000, where he developed his skills for six years.[7] In 2006, he moved to FC Brussels' youth setup, spending three years honing his abilities as a versatile defender and midfielder.[7] By 2009, at age 15, Kayembe transferred to the prestigious Standard de Liège academy, one of Belgium's top youth programs, where he progressed through the ranks until 2013, focusing on technical and tactical development in competitive environments.[7] During this period, he occasionally featured for Standard Liège's reserve team, gaining exposure to semi-professional levels. In September 2013, shortly after turning 19, Kayembe signed a professional contract with FC Porto on a free transfer from Standard de Liège, marking his entry into senior football in Portugal's Primeira Liga. He primarily integrated into Porto's B team in the second division, making 45 appearances and scoring 3 goals over the next 18 months, which helped build his physicality and experience in higher-stakes matches.[8] His first-team debut came on May 4, 2014, as a substitute in a Primeira Liga match against Olhanense, where he played 45 minutes in a 1–2 away defeat.[2] This solitary senior outing for Porto highlighted his potential but limited opportunities in the first team due to competition.[2] To gain consistent playing time, Kayembe was loaned to FC Arouca in January 2015 for the remainder of the 2014–15 season. There, he adapted quickly to Primeira Liga demands, starting 12 of 15 appearances and scoring once, contributing to Arouca's mid-table finish while showcasing his versatility on the left flank.[2] Following this, in August 2015, he joined Rio Ave on a season-long loan for 2015–16, where he established himself with 25 league appearances, 2 goals, and 2 assists, aiding the team's defensive solidity and transition play.[2] These loan spells represented crucial early professional steps, providing Kayembe with over 40 senior outings and refining his professional profile before returning to Porto in 2016.Time at Porto
Kayembe joined FC Porto on a free transfer from Standard Liège in September 2013, at the age of 19.[8] During his initial period with the club, he was primarily integrated into the reserve team, FC Porto B, competing in the Liga Portugal 2, where he began developing his skills as a versatile left-sided player.[6] In the 2013–14 season, Kayembe made his sole first-team appearance for Porto in the Primeira Liga, coming on as a substitute in the 46th minute during a 2–1 away defeat to S.C. Olhanense on 4 May 2014.[9] This brief outing marked his only involvement with the senior squad that season, as he continued to focus on matches with Porto B, contributing to their campaign in the second tier. Over his time with the reserves from September 2013 to January 2015, he accumulated 45 appearances and 3 goals.[8] Kayembe remained under contract with Porto until 2017, predominantly featuring for Porto B and showcasing his attacking contributions from the left flank. In the 2016–17 season, he enjoyed a standout year with the reserves, scoring 7 goals in 32 appearances across all competitions, which highlighted his goal-scoring threat and versatility.[10] This performance led to his promotion to the first-team squad in May 2017, though he did not feature in any further senior matches before departing the club.[10]Loan spells in Portugal
In January 2015, Kayembe joined F.C. Arouca on loan from F.C. Porto until the end of the 2014–15 Primeira Liga season.[11] During this spell, he made 15 appearances and scored 1 goal, primarily featuring as a winger and contributing to the team's mid-table finish.[12] The loan provided Kayembe with his first significant exposure to regular first-team action in Portugal's top flight, helping him adapt to the league's demands.[6] Following the end of his Arouca stint, Kayembe was loaned to fellow Primeira Liga side Rio Ave F.C. in July 2015 for the entire 2015–16 campaign.[11] He featured in 33 matches across all competitions, netting 4 goals and recording 5 assists, while showcasing versatility on the left flank.[12] This period marked a step forward in his development, as Rio Ave reached the Taça de Portugal quarter-finals and finished 10th in the league, with Kayembe's contributions aiding their competitive showings.[6]Move to Nantes
In June 2017, Joris Kayembe transferred from FC Porto B to FC Nantes on a free basis as part of the compensation package negotiated following manager Sérgio Conceição's departure from Nantes to Porto.[13][14] The deal also facilitated the loan of defender Chidozie Awaziem from Porto to Nantes, with Nantes securing 50% of Kayembe's future transfer rights.[13] At 22 years old, the left-footed Belgian winger signed a four-year contract with the Ligue 1 club, bringing experience from his previous loan spell at Rio Ave in the 2015–16 Primeira Liga season, where he featured in 25 matches and scored two goals.[14][15][2] Kayembe, an attacking midfielder known for his pace and directness on the left flank, was viewed as a promising addition to bolster Nantes' wide options under new management.[15] He held Belgian U21 international status with eight caps at the time of his arrival.[14] However, his integration into the first team proved challenging due to persistent injuries that curtailed his progress. In the 2017–18 Ligue 1 season, Kayembe made just three substitute appearances for Nantes without scoring or assisting.[16] His debut came against Toulouse on August 11, 2017, but opportunities remained limited as he competed for places amid squad competition.[16] By late 2017, he suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee, sidelining him for much of the campaign and requiring extensive rehabilitation.[17] Kayembe's injury woes continued into the following seasons. In March 2018, shortly after returning from the ACL issue, he sustained a severe sprain to his left knee during training, necessitating surgery and another prolonged absence.[18] These setbacks restricted him to minimal first-team involvement overall, with most of his activity confined to Nantes' reserve side in the Championnat National 2, where he appeared in five matches across 2017–19. Despite occasional training returns and expressions of determination to reclaim his spot, Kayembe struggled to regain full fitness or match rhythm during his tenure.[17]Spell at Charleroi
In January 2020, Joris Kayembe joined Sporting Charleroi on a permanent transfer from FC Nantes, signing a two-year contract to revitalize his career after limited opportunities in Ligue 1.[19] The move was influenced by his agent Mogi Bayat, whose brother Mehdi Bayat serves as Charleroi's president, and came amid Kayembe's recovery from an ACL injury and a subsequent knee sprain that had restricted him overall to just three first-team appearances for Nantes across three seasons.[19] During his three-and-a-half-year tenure at Charleroi, Kayembe established himself as a reliable left-sided player, primarily deployed as a left-back but also featuring as a left winger or left midfielder due to his versatility.[1] He quickly became a regular in the starting lineup, contributing to the team's defensive solidity and occasional attacking forays in the Belgian Pro League. Over 116 appearances across all competitions, he recorded 3 goals and 13 assists, helping Charleroi maintain mid-table positions without securing major honors. In league play, he accumulated 106 appearances, 4 goals, and 12 assists across three full seasons (2020–2023).[12][2][20] His seasonal performances demonstrated consistency, with increasing involvement in the team's build-up play:| Season | Appearances | Goals | Assists |

Transfer to Genk
On 17 May 2023, KRC Genk announced the signing of Joris Kayembe from Sporting Charleroi, where he had established himself as a reliable left-back over recent seasons.[21] The move was positioned as a strategic addition to bolster Genk's defensive options, with head of football Dimitri de Condé stating, “Joris has been on our wish list for a while now. As an extra left-footed player, he is the missing puzzle piece in our defence.”[21] Kayembe officially joined Genk on 1 July 2023, signing a three-year contract until 30 June 2026, with an option for an additional year.[22] At the time of the transfer, the 28-year-old had made 116 appearances for Charleroi, including 30 in the 2022–23 season where he contributed one goal and one assist.[21] His versatility to play as a left-back or left-sided centre-back was highlighted as key to his integration, allowing him to compete with existing squad member Carlos Cuesta for a starting role.[21] The transfer fee was not publicly disclosed, though Kayembe's market value was estimated at €2.5 million around the time of the move.[22] This acquisition marked Kayembe's return to a top-tier Belgian club after his earlier stints in Portugal and France, aligning with Genk's aim to build a competitive squad for the 2023–24 Jupiler Pro League season.[22] Since joining Genk, Kayembe has become a key player in the defense, utilizing his versatility on the left flank. As of November 2025, he has made 58 league appearances, scoring 2 goals and providing 4 assists, while also participating in UEFA Europa League qualifiers.[2]International career
Youth international appearances
Joris Kayembe represented Belgium at the youth international level, earning caps for both the U16 and U21 teams early in his career. For the Belgium U16 side, he made one appearance in a friendly match during 2009, playing the full 90 minutes without scoring.[23] Kayembe's most notable youth international involvement came with the Belgium U21 team from 2014 to 2016, where he accumulated 9 caps and scored 3 goals. In 2014, he featured in two friendly matches, netting both of his goals for the team while accumulating 127 minutes of play. The following year, during the 2015–16 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying campaign, he started all 7 matches, scoring once and logging 623 minutes on the pitch.[23]Senior debut and DR Congo national team
Kayembe earned his first senior international call-up with the Belgium national team in October 2020. He made his debut on 8 October 2020, starting in a 1–1 friendly draw against Ivory Coast at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, where he played the full 90 minutes without scoring. Five days later, on 11 November 2020, he featured again in a 2–1 friendly victory over Switzerland, also completing the full match. These two appearances were his only caps for Belgium, as the matches were friendlies and did not preclude a future switch in allegiance under FIFA rules.[24] In March 2023, Kayembe opted to represent the DR Congo national team, his country of ancestral origin, becoming eligible after limited prior involvement with Belgium. He received his first call-up for DR Congo in September 2023 and made his debut on 12 September 2023, starting and playing the full 90 minutes in a 1–0 friendly defeat to South Africa in Johannesburg. This marked the beginning of his international career with the Leopards, where he has since established himself as a versatile defender. As of November 2025, Kayembe has accumulated 19 caps for DR Congo without scoring.[25][26] Kayembe's early matches for DR Congo included full appearances in two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in November 2023: a 2–0 home win over Mauritania on 15 November and a 1–0 victory against Sudan on 19 November. He was named to the provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (held in early 2024) in December 2023 and made the final 24-man roster selected by coach Sébastien Desabre. During the tournament in [Ivory Coast](/page/Ivory Coast), DR Congo advanced to the quarterfinals, finishing second in Group F behind Morocco. Kayembe appeared as a substitute in the round of 16 penalty shootout win over Egypt on 28 January 2024 (6 minutes played) and as a substitute in the quarterfinal 0–0 (3–4 pens) loss to Guinea on 2 February 2024 (6 minutes played). He then played the full 90 minutes in the third-place match, a penalty shootout defeat to South Africa on 10 February 2024, helping secure a fourth-place finish—their joint-best AFCON result since 2015.[27][28][25] Subsequently, Kayembe contributed to DR Congo's 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, featuring in matches such as the 1–1 away draw against Senegal on 6 June 2024 and the 1–0 home win over Togo on 9 June 2024. He has also featured in 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, including a 1–0 win over Guinea on 6 September 2024 and a 3–1 victory against Ethiopia on 19 November 2024. His role has primarily been as a left-back or central defender, providing defensive solidity in a squad that has qualified for the 2025 AFCON finals.[25][26]Playing style
Positional versatility
Joris Kayembe exhibits notable positional versatility, primarily operating on the left side of the pitch across defensive and midfield roles. His primary position is left-back, where he provides defensive stability while contributing to build-up play with his left-footed passing and overlapping runs.[1] Kayembe has frequently deployed as a left midfielder, allowing him to influence games in more advanced areas with his technical ability and work rate.[29][30] He has also featured as a left winger, leveraging his pace and crossing to support attacking transitions, particularly during his spells at Charleroi and Nantes.[1][6] This adaptability extends to central defensive and midfield positions, including central defender and left defensive midfielder, enabling tactical flexibility for his teams.[29][31] During his time at FC Nantes, club officials highlighted his ability to operate across the midfield and left flank, contributing both defensively and offensively in Ligue 1 matches.[6] At Sporting Charleroi, he alternated between left-back and left midfield roles over multiple seasons, ranking among the league's top performers in tackles won while providing assists from advanced positions.[30] Since joining Genk in 2023, Kayembe has mainly anchored the left-back position but retains the option to shift into midfield, as evidenced by his appearances in the Belgian Pro League.[1]Key strengths and attributes
Joris Kayembe is particularly noted for his proficiency in passing, which is rated as very strong based on his performance in the latest two seasons, enabling him to distribute the ball accurately from left-back or midfield roles with an 86.2% success rate in the Belgian Pro League.[29] His ability to hold onto the ball under pressure stands out as a key attribute, allowing him to maintain possession in tight spaces and contribute to build-up play effectively.[29] In terms of ball progression, Kayembe demonstrates strong dribbling skills, successfully completing 1.34 dribbles per 90 minutes, placing him in the 92nd percentile among peers in the Belgian Pro League.[32] This technical assurance is complemented by his high involvement in matches, averaging touches in the 96th percentile at 96.03 per 90 minutes, reflecting his active role in both defensive and offensive phases.[32] Defensively, his strengths lie in ball interceptions and concentration, where he excels at reading plays and recovering possession, with 55 ball recoveries recorded in recent appearances.[29][32] Kayembe's pass accuracy of 84.5% further underscores his reliability in transitioning from defense to attack, often delivering key passes (0.77 per 90, 71st percentile) to support forward movements.[32]Career statistics
