It was announced on 16 July 2019 that Empson would take a break, departing on 23 July 2019, with a special appearance via webcam on 25 December 2019. She returned on 16 November 2020. Kim is described as "vivacious and bubbly" on the outside, but hiding vulnerability and low self-esteem. The EastEnders website describes Kim as having big hair, a loud personality, hyperactive and a big heart. She is sharp, family-orientated and cares about her appearance, having a loud dress sense and being the life and soul of any party. She chooses the wrong men to have relationships with, but knows what she wants when it comes to love. Kim makes her first appearance for Denise's wedding to Lucas Johnson. She briefly returns after Denise is presumed dead, but makes a more permanent return when she separates from her boyfriend Dexter Mulholland. In later storylines, Kim suffers a miscarriage, has to cope with becoming a single mother to her and Vincent Hubbard's children, Pearl and Mica, following Vincent's mysterious disappearance, has a relationship with Howie Danes, becomes a social media influencer, and develops post-traumatic stress disorder from a car accident with Howie's teenage son Denzel.Casting and creation
Casting history
Tameka Empson, known for her comedy work in the BBC sketch show 3 Non-Blondes, was cast in the role of Kim Fox for a guest appearance in EastEnders in 2009 under executive producer Diederick Santer.[1][2] The casting originated from an informal meeting where Empson, then performing in pantomime, suggested to associate producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins that she could play the sister of established character Denise Fox; five months later, her agent confirmed the booking for a short stint of two episodes or two weeks, which Empson saw as a chance to "put her foot in the door."[3] Empson's character debuted on 24 November 2009, attending Denise's wedding to Lucas Johnson, as announced in BBC episode listings and production credits.[4][5] Following the positive reception to her initial appearance, Empson transitioned to a regular role on 4 June 2010 under new executive producer Bryan Kirkwood, who brought her back to Walford for an extended stay.[6] Kirkwood praised Empson as "a real talent" whose return would add "a fresh, funny and exciting new flavour to the show."[6] Empson expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "I'm really thrilled and excited to be returning to EastEnders... Kim Fox is such a great character to play and gives me scope to do things I usually wouldn't get away with," highlighting her enjoyment of the role's comedic potential during early filming.[6] This promotion marked the beginning of Empson's long-term involvement with the series.Character introduction and development
Kim Fox was introduced as the boisterous half-sister of established character Denise Fox, aimed at enriching the Fox family dynamics and injecting fresh energy into the narrative of the BBC soap opera EastEnders.[7] This addition under executive producer Diederick Santer sought to explore themes of sibling bonds and familial support amid Walford's ongoing dramas.[8] Portrayed by actress Tameka Empson, Kim debuted as a guest character to broaden the scope of Denise's personal storylines.[9] Kim's first appearance aired on 24 November 2009, coinciding with Denise's wedding to Lucas Johnson, where she arrived unannounced with her then-boyfriend Dexter Mulholland, sparking immediate family tension and humorous clashes.[10] Her initial guest arc centered on disruptive family drama, including confrontations over Denise's relationships and Kim's own chaotic lifestyle, culminating in her brief departure after the wedding festivities. Kim then returned as a regular character on 4 June 2010, having separated from Dexter Mulholland, and decided to remain in Walford to support her family and integrate into the community.[11] Later, in mid-2010, Kim became involved in the storyline surrounding her sister Denise's apparent death, as Lucas Johnson held Denise hostage and faked her suicide to cover his crimes; Kim supported her nieces during the crisis, which highlighted her loyalty and added emotional depth to her character.[12] Over time, Kim evolved from primarily serving as comic relief—characterized by her bold personality, extravagant fashion, and witty one-liners that lightened heavier episodes—into a more multifaceted character under successive producers like Bryan Kirkwood and later Dominic Treadwell-Collins.[7] Her expansion in the 2010s highlighted vulnerabilities beneath the bravado, such as emotional denial during family crises, paving the way for narratives that balanced humor with heartfelt family loyalty and personal growth, including business ventures and influencer storylines.[9] This development underscored the producers' intent to use Kim as a versatile figure capable of both levity and emotional depth within the show's ensemble.Characterisation
Personality and traits
Kim Fox is portrayed as a vivacious and bubbly character with a loud personality, often accentuated by her signature big hair and bold, colorful fashion choices that prioritize "upkeep on the cheap" without concern for designer labels.[6][10] This fearless approach to style, exemplified by outfits like a lizard skin leatherette suit, underscores her distinctive "ghetto princess" aesthetic and sharp wit, making her a standout presence in Walford.[10] Beneath this comedic and outgoing exterior lies a big heart and hidden intelligence, revealing a woman who is smarter and more emotionally complex than she initially appears.[10] Despite her lively demeanor, Kim harbors underlying vulnerability and low self-esteem, which surface in moments of personal crisis and contrast with her family-oriented loyalty and protective nature toward loved ones.[6][10] This depth has evolved over time, particularly in storylines addressing deeper psychological issues; for instance, following a 2023 car accident that injured her stepson Denzel, Kim is diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), leading to panic attacks, emotional breakdowns where she describes herself as a "broken woman," and eventual therapy to manage her anxiety.[13][14] Kim's traits extend to exploratory and ethical dimensions in spin-off media, where her bold personality drives comedic yet insightful attempts at lifestyle changes, such as a week-long vegan challenge in The Kimfluencer, highlighting her willingness to embrace new ideas despite challenges.[15]Family connections
Kim Fox is the half-sister of Denise Fox, sharing the same father but having different mothers, a revelation that initially strained their relationship before strengthening their bond as family.[16] She is also the half-sister of Daphne Fox, who briefly appeared in Walford in 2010 during a family crisis involving Denise.[7] These sibling connections underscore Kim's role as a supportive yet outspoken family member, often drawing on her loyalty to navigate personal challenges. Since 2021, Kim has been in a relationship with Howie Danes, with whom she co-parents his son Denzel Danes as her stepson.[17] Kim is the mother of two children with her former husband, Vincent Hubbard: daughter Pearl Fox, born prematurely on 19 February 2015 during a dramatic live episode at The Queen Victoria public house, and son Mica Fox, born on 24 December 2018.[18] The births highlighted Kim's resilience as a parent, with Pearl's early arrival requiring immediate medical attention and Mica's timing adding a festive yet chaotic element to family life. Kim and Vincent married in 2015, adopting the hyphenated surname Fox-Hubbard until their separation in 2018 following Vincent's disappearance.[19] Through her sister Denise, Kim is aunt to nieces Chelsea Fox and Libby Fox, as well as nephew Raymond Fox, whose custody battles have occasionally involved family input from Kim, reinforcing her protective instincts toward extended relatives.[7][20] These ties contribute to Kim's bubbly demeanor, where family loyalty often manifests in humorous yet steadfast support.Storylines
2009–2013
Kim Fox arrived in Walford on 24 November 2009 with her then-boyfriend Dexter Mulholland to attend her sister Denise's wedding to Lucas Johnson.[10] The wedding festivities revealed underlying family tensions, prompting Kim to extend her stay in Albert Square rather than return home immediately.[4] Her lively and effervescent demeanor soon integrated her into the local community, often injecting humor into social gatherings. Early in her time in Walford, Kim pursued entrepreneurial opportunities, including a brief involvement in operating a speakeasy-style club hidden within The Queen Victoria public house, which highlighted her ambitious yet chaotic approach to business.[21] After parting ways with Dexter and selling her share in their short-lived restaurant venture, she purchased 20 Albert Square and transformed it into a bed and breakfast establishment named Kimberley's Palace in 2011.[22] The B&B became a central hub for her comedic misadventures, such as disastrous guest experiences and promotional stunts, while also serving as a base for her meddling in Denise's personal life, including unsolicited advice on relationships and family matters. In 2011, Kim entered a romantic relationship with newcomer Ray Dixon, a single father and ex-soldier who had recently moved to Walford with his children.[23] Their courtship, marked by Kim's enthusiastic support in helping Ray care for his kids, faced a significant setback when Kim experienced an HIV scare following a one-night stand during a period of relationship strain; tests ultimately confirmed she was negative.[23] The couple's dynamic provided both lighthearted moments and tension, but it deteriorated amid revelations of Ray's infidelity with Denise in late 2012, culminating in their breakup in 2013.[24] Throughout these years, Kim's failed schemes—like the speakeasy closure and erratic B&B management—alongside her overbearing interference in Denise's affairs, underscored her role as a source of comic relief in Walford.[25]2014–2019
In December 2014, Kim returned to Albert Square after an extended absence, announcing her pregnancy with her first child, fathered by Vincent Hubbard, whom she had met and secretly married off-screen while working on a cruise ship. The couple's relationship faced immediate scrutiny upon Vincent's arrival in February 2015, as the revelation of their marriage sparked dramatic confrontations, including suspicions over Vincent's undisclosed connections to local criminal elements like Phil Mitchell; in a heated moment in May 2015, Kim temporarily returned her wedding ring amid trust issues but ultimately reconciled with him. Their honeymoon period was overshadowed by ongoing tensions, though they settled into family life together in Walford. Kim gave birth to their daughter, Pearl, prematurely on 19 February 2015, during the soap's live 30th anniversary week, delivering in the unconventional setting of The Queen Victoria pub's toilets, which highlighted the chaotic circumstances of her homecoming.[26] As Kim and Vincent navigated parenthood, they encountered business challenges with the bed and breakfast (B&B) venture Kim co-managed with her half-sister Denise, including operational strains from mismanagement and financial pressures that tested their partnership and led to temporary rifts. In 2017, the couple's joy over a second pregnancy turned to heartbreak when Kim suffered a miscarriage, leaving her devastated and prompting Vincent to offer support as they grieved the loss privately.[27] Determined to expand their family, Kim became pregnant again later that year, giving birth to their son, Mica, on 24 December 2018, adding stability amid rising tensions in their marriage due to Vincent's involvement in shady dealings.[28] However, Vincent vanished without trace in April 2018 after falling into a trap orchestrated by Phil Mitchell and criminal Aidan Maguire, plunging Kim into emotional turmoil as she coped with single parenthood and uncertainty over his fate, even reporting him missing to authorities who provided little clarity.[29] Throughout these crises, Kim leaned on her close family ties with Denise for support, sharing the burdens of raising Pearl and Mica while rebuilding her life in Walford.[30] Facing ongoing personal hardships, Kim announced her temporary departure from Albert Square in July 2019 to pursue a new job opportunity away from the drama, allowing her to focus on her children and seek a fresh start; this exit aligned with actress Tameka Empson's real-life maternity leave.[31]2020–present
Kim Fox returned to Albert Square on 16 November 2020, following a period away that aligned with actress Tameka Empson's maternity leave after the off-screen birth of her daughter Mica earlier that year.[32][33] Upon her arrival, Kim reunited with her sister Denise and was stunned to discover that Denise had regained custody of her son Raymond, whom Kim had helped care for during family crises in prior years. Kim quickly became involved in supporting the Fox family's efforts to integrate Raymond into their lives at No. 20 Albert Square, offering comic relief and emotional backing amid the adjustment.[34][7] In 2023, Kim faced significant legal and personal challenges stemming from a car accident. After purchasing a new vehicle, she crashed it into the Argee Bhajee restaurant, injuring stepson Denzel Danes and prompting a court case for dangerous driving. During the hearing on 3 July 2023, Kim suffered a severe panic attack, leading to her being sentenced to a one-week prison term for contempt of court after attempting to leave the proceedings.[35][36] Upon release, Kim exhibited symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including ongoing panic attacks and behavioral changes, which strained her relationships and required family intervention for counseling.[37][38] Kim took a brief hiatus from Walford in early 2024, departing on 25 January before returning on 10 June alongside partner Howie Danes and their children. Their homecoming was marked by discovering Denzel hosting an unsupervised party for his gym friends at No. 20, which escalated into chaos and led Kim to initially blame caregivers Yolande and Patrick Trueman for negligence. This incident highlighted ongoing family tensions around Denzel's recovery from the prior accident. Throughout 2024, Kim pursued comedic ventures into social media influencing, earning recognition for her online content while navigating ethical dilemmas in her promotional schemes.[39][40] By late 2024 and into 2025, Kim continued to play a supportive role in family matters, including mediating Denise's romantic entanglements. In 2025, her relationship with Howie faced intensified strains from his turn to criminality starting in July to address financial pressures, leading to brief split fears and a life-changing decision amid ongoing past traumas. Kim also engaged in whimsical schemes, such as her Kimfluencer social media career, which encountered a slip-up in late November with consequences for others in Walford. As Christmas 2025 approached, she contributed comedic ideas to Nigel's poignant 'Santa Claws' film project, tied to themes of dementia and community, providing light-hearted moments amid holiday tensions.[41][42][43][44]Spin-offs and other media
