Mark Mathias
Mark Andrew Mathias (born August 2, 1994) is an American professional baseball infielder known for his versatility across multiple positions, including second base, shortstop, third base, and the outfield.[1][2] Mathias was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the third round, 93rd overall, of the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft out of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he had excelled as a sophomore in 2014, hitting .386 to lead the Big West Conference.[3][4] He spent his first five professional seasons in the Indians' minor league system, advancing to Triple-A Columbus Clippers in 2019 and earning honors such as MiLB.com Organization All-Star in 2016 and 2018, as well as Carolina League Post-Season All-Star in 2016, while compiling a .261 batting average, 28 home runs, and 210 RBIs over 454 games.[5] Traded to the Milwaukee Brewers organization in 2019, Mathias made his MLB debut on August 4, 2020, with the Brewers against the Chicago White Sox.[1][2] Over three MLB seasons from 2020 to 2023, Mathias appeared in 73 games for four teams: the Brewers (2020 and 2022), Texas Rangers (2022), Pittsburgh Pirates (2023), and San Francisco Giants (2023), batting .246 with 6 home runs, 30 RBIs, and 7 stolen bases in 179 at-bats, highlighted by his first career home run on June 11, 2022, against the Washington Nationals.[1] He was briefly with the Seattle Mariners in 2023 and signed a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds that offseason, but did not play in 2024 due to injury. After being granted free agency following the 2024 season, he signed with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League on April 4, 2025, beginning his tenth year in professional baseball and bringing his leadership and positional flexibility to the independent league team.[2][6]Early life and education
Mark Mathias was born on August 2, 1994, in Santa Clara, California.[5]High school career
Mathias attended Irvington High School in Fremont, California, from 2009 to 2013, where he played baseball as a shortstop and pitcher.[1][3] As a junior in 2012, Mathias was named MVP and earned first-team All-Mission Valley League honors, along with second-team All-East Bay recognition.[7] That season, he batted .407 with five doubles, one home run, and 10 RBI, along with five stolen bases, while posting a 4-4 record with a 2.17 ERA over 38 innings pitched.[7][1] In his senior year, Mathias did not pitch but hit .239 with 15 RBI.[7] Following graduation, Mathias opted to pursue college baseball at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo rather than an immediate professional path.[3]College career
Mark Mathias enrolled at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) in 2013, where he played college baseball for the Mustangs from 2013 to 2015.[5] As a freshman in 2013, he appeared in 17 games, batting .200 with a .273 on-base percentage and .275 slugging percentage over 40 at-bats.[5] Mathias broke out as a sophomore in 2014, leading the team with a .386 batting average—20th in the NCAA—and earning All-Big West honors while playing primarily second base.[4] That summer, he was selected to the 2014 USA Collegiate National Team, where he batted .263 and contributed to the squad's international success, including a win at Honkbal Week.[8][7] His performance that year highlighted his emerging role as a versatile infielder capable of playing second base, third base, shortstop, and first base, while demonstrating mental toughness and broad contributions to team dynamics, as noted by Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee.[9][5] In December 2014, Mathias underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder labrum after an injury sustained during USA Baseball play, which limited him to designated hitter duties early in his junior season.[10] He returned to the lineup in late February 2015, posting a .356 batting average with a .424 on-base percentage and .436 slugging percentage over 202 at-bats in 47 games.[5] Over his entire college career, Mathias compiled a .356 batting average, .426 on-base percentage, and .447 slugging percentage across 452 at-bats, solidifying his reputation as a contact-oriented hitter and defensive asset.[5] Mathias's collegiate success culminated in his selection by the Cleveland Indians in the third round (93rd overall) of the 2015 MLB Draft, recognizing his potential as a multi-positional infielder with strong plate discipline.[9]Professional career
Cleveland Indians
Mathias was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the third round, 93rd overall, of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft out of California Polytechnic State University.[5] He signed a minor league contract with the organization shortly thereafter.[11] In 2015, Mathias began his professional career with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the Class A Short Season New York-Penn League, where he posted a .282 batting average with a .382 on-base percentage and .408 slugging percentage, along with 2 home runs and 32 RBIs over 67 games.[5] This debut season marked a solid introduction to professional baseball, showcasing his plate discipline and contact skills early on. Mathias advanced to full-season ball in 2016, splitting time between the Class A Advanced Lynchburg Hillcats of the Carolina League and the Double-A Akron RubberDucks of the Eastern League. Across 120 games with both affiliates, he batted .267 with a .351 on-base percentage and .396 slugging percentage, hitting 5 home runs and driving in 61 runs.[5] His performance earned him recognition as a Carolina League post-season All-Star and a MiLB.com Organization All-Star for the Cleveland Indians.[11] The following two seasons, 2017 and 2018, saw Mathias primarily with the Akron RubberDucks at the Double-A level. In 2017, limited to 35 games due to injury, he hit .212 with 1 home run and 13 RBIs.[5] He rebounded in 2018, appearing in 117 games and batting .232 with 8 home runs and 45 RBIs, once again earning MiLB.com Organization All-Star honors for the Indians.[11][5] In 2019, Mathias reached Triple-A for the first time with the Columbus Clippers of the International League, where he played 115 games and slashed .269/.355/.442, including 12 home runs and 59 RBIs, demonstrating further power development and readiness for higher levels.[5] On November 20, 2019, the Indians traded Mathias to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for minor league catcher Andres Melendez, after which the Brewers added him to their 40-man roster.[12]Milwaukee Brewers
Prior to the 2020 season, the Milwaukee Brewers acquired infielder Mark Mathias from the Cleveland Indians on November 20, 2019, in exchange for catcher Andrés Melendez and added him to their 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.[12] Mathias made his MLB debut with the Brewers on August 4, 2020, entering as a pinch runner in the ninth inning of a 3-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox at American Family Field.[13] The following day, he recorded his first career hit, a single off Dallas Keuchel in his first plate appearance.[14] In 16 games that shortened season, Mathias batted .278/.278/.361 with 10 hits, including three doubles and four RBI, across 36 at-bats while appearing at second base, third base, shortstop, and as a designated hitter.[3] Entering 2021 spring training, Mathias suffered a torn labrum in his right shoulder during the second week of March, an injury that required surgery and marked his second such procedure following a similar issue during his college career at Cal Poly.[15] The Brewers placed him on the 60-day injured list on March 16, and he did not play at any level that season, missing the entire campaign.[1] Mathias began the 2022 season with the Brewers' Triple-A affiliate, the Nashville Sounds, where he hit .318/.421/.518 with eight home runs and 30 RBI in 50 games and 170 at-bats.[16] The Brewers selected his contract and called him up to the majors on May 24; in his initial stint, he went 2-for-16 in six games primarily as a utility infielder.[3] Recalled again on June 11, Mathias hit his first MLB home run that day—a two-run shot off Washington Nationals pitcher Patrick Corbin in the seventh inning of a 10-4 loss. On August 1, the Brewers traded Mathias, along with left-handed pitching prospect Antoine Kelly, to the Texas Rangers in exchange for reliever Matt Bush.[17]Texas Rangers
Mathias was acquired by the Texas Rangers from the Milwaukee Brewers on August 1, 2022, in a trade that sent relief pitcher Matt Bush to Milwaukee in exchange for Mathias and minor league pitcher Antoine Kelly.[17] In 24 games with the Rangers during the 2022 season, Mathias batted .277 with a .365 on-base percentage and .554 slugging percentage over 65 at-bats, hitting five home runs and driving in 16 runs.[1] He primarily served as a utility infielder, offering power production from the bench in a versatile role that included appearances at second base, third base, and as a designated hitter.[18] On March 4, 2023, the Rangers designated Mathias for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster after signing left-handed reliever Will Smith to a one-year contract.[19]Pittsburgh Pirates
On March 8, 2023, the Pittsburgh Pirates acquired Mathias from the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later.[20] He began the season optioned to the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians, where in 35 games he batted .273 with 2 home runs and 12 RBIs, before being recalled in April.[1][21] During the 2023 season, Mathias appeared in 22 games for the Pirates, compiling a .231 batting average with a .355 on-base percentage and .269 slugging percentage over 52 at-bats.[3] He recorded 12 hits, including two doubles, four RBI, and three stolen bases, while drawing 10 walks and striking out 11 times.[3] Bringing his versatile utility role from prior teams, Mathias primarily started at second base (16 games) and also appeared in right field and as a designated hitter, with additional pinch-hitting opportunities.[22] On June 25, 2023, the Pirates designated Mathias for assignment, and he was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners on July 2.[23]Seattle Mariners
On July 2, 2023, the Seattle Mariners claimed infielder Mark Mathias off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, adding him to their 40-man roster as a versatile utility player.[1][11][3] Mathias did not appear in any games for the Mariners during his brief tenure with the organization.[1][3] On July 31, 2023, the Mariners traded Mathias, along with outfielder A. J. Pollock and cash considerations, to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for a player to be named later.[1][3]San Francisco Giants
On July 31, 2023, the San Francisco Giants acquired Mathias from the Seattle Mariners in a trade that also included outfielder A.J. Pollock and cash considerations in exchange for a player to be named later or cash.[24][25] Following the trade, Mathias made limited appearances for the Giants, playing in five Major League games primarily as a utility infielder. He recorded two hits in 10 at-bats for a .200 batting average, including two RBI, with two of his outings coming as pinch-hit at-bats.[3][1] Mathias's time with the Giants was cut short by injury when he was placed on the 10-day injured list on August 18, 2023, due to a right shoulder strain, which was a recurrence of prior shoulder issues that had previously required surgery.[1][20] He was subsequently transferred to the 60-day injured list on August 22, 2023, ending his season.[1] After the season, the Giants outrighted Mathias to Triple-A Sacramento on November 1, 2023, removing him from their 40-man roster.[26] Mathias then elected free agency on November 3, 2023.[1]Cincinnati Reds
On November 29, 2023, the Cincinnati Reds signed Mark Mathias to a minor league contract, assigning him to their Triple-A affiliate, the Louisville Bats.[27] This deal came after Mathias had elected free agency from the San Francisco Giants earlier that month.[1] Throughout the 2024 season, Mathias did not appear in any Major League or minor league games for the Reds organization, primarily due to ongoing recovery from a right shoulder strain that had sidelined him since August 2023 with the Giants.[11] On March 19, 2024, the Louisville Bats placed him on the 60-day injured list, further delaying his return.[1] Following the conclusion of the minor league season, Mathias elected free agency on November 4, 2024.[28]Long Island Ducks
Mathias signed with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball on April 4, 2025, bringing his experience as a Major League Baseball veteran to the independent league team.[29] As a versatile infielder and outfielder, Mathias provided depth at second base and right field during the Ducks' exhibition and early regular season games.[30] In an exhibition contest against the Long Island Black Sox on April 21, 2025, he delivered a two-run triple to right-center, contributing two RBIs, a run scored, a hit, and two walks in the Ducks' victory.[31] Over the course of the 2025 season, Mathias appeared in 9 games for the Ducks, batting .167 with a .286 on-base percentage and .167 slugging percentage in 30 at-bats, recording 1 RBI and no home runs while primarily playing second base and right field.[30] Following the conclusion of the Atlantic League season, Mathias became a free agent.[30]Career statistics
