Mogul Embassy
The Mogul Embassy was a villainous professional wrestling stable active in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and its sister promotion Ring of Honor (ROH) from April 2023 until May 2024.[1] Formed through the merger of Swerve Strickland's Mogul Affiliates group and Prince Nana's existing Embassy faction, the stable positioned itself as a dominant force emphasizing wealth, power, and intimidation tactics.[2] Key members included leader and AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland, longtime manager and hype man Prince Nana, powerhouse Brian Cage, and the tag team known as The Gates of Agony—Bishop Kaun and Toa Liona—who served as the group's primary in-ring enforcers.[1] AR Fox briefly aligned with the Embassy as a high-flying addition in July 2023 before being ousted the following month.[3][4] Upon formation, the group was already the reigning ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champions from the prior Embassy incarnation, continuing their first reign until losing the titles to The Elite on September 22, 2023. Their second reign began on November 1, 2023, when Cage, Kaun, and Liona defeated The Elite (The Young Bucks and "Hangman" Adam Page) on AEW Dynamite with interference from Strickland.[5] They held the titles until losing them to Bullet Club Gold on January 17, 2024. The Mogul Embassy's run highlighted intense rivalries, including high-profile feuds with The Elite and Bullet Club Gold, culminating in the stable's title loss to the latter on January 17, 2024. The faction disbanded on the May 8, 2024, episode of AEW Dynamite when Cage, Kaun, and Liona betrayed Strickland in an alliance with The Patriarchy, reforming separately as Cage of Agony while Nana continued managing Strickland as a solo act.[6]History
Original incarnation in Ring of Honor (2004–2009)
The Embassy was formed by Prince Nana in Ring of Honor (ROH) in early 2004, as a heel stable designed to represent international wrestling talent while engaging in extortion schemes that demanded tribute payments from other ROH wrestlers. Nana positioned the group as a powerful entity leveraging his portrayed wealth and influence from Ghana to dominate the promotion through intimidation and financial leverage.[7] Early core members included Prince Nana as the manager and leader, alongside wrestlers Jimmy Rave and The Outcast Killaz (Josh Daniels and Xavier), with Abyss and Alex Shelley joining in 2005 to bolster the group, who utilized underhanded tactics such as ring interferences and backstage shakedowns to enforce their demands on opponents. The stable quickly established itself as a dominant heel faction, with Rave serving as a key enforcer and Shelley contributing technical prowess, while Abyss brought monster-like power to their assaults.[8] Their debut as a unit involved an interference to aid Rave during a match at Glory by Honor III on September 11, 2004, where Nana celebrated the group's arrival by flashing a mock contract for Mick Foley's potential involvement, further emphasizing their extortion gimmick.[9] The Embassy's primary feuds centered on rival factions like The Rottweilers, led by Homicide, and Generation Next, headed by Austin Aries, with conflicts escalating over control of ROH territory and resistance to the group's tribute demands.[8] These rivalries led to high-stakes matches, including multi-man bouts at events such as Final Battle 2004 on December 26, 2004, where Embassy members clashed with Generation Next in intense tag and six-man encounters that highlighted the stable's coordinated heel strategies.[10] The group also targeted individual stars like Jay Lethal and AJ Styles in tribute-related angles, using numerical advantages to assert dominance.[11] Internal strife began to erode the stable's cohesion starting in 2005, with Alex Shelley departing after a brief tenure amid tensions over creative direction and personal ambitions, followed by Abyss's exit to pursue opportunities elsewhere later that year.[12] Jimmy Rave remained a mainstay but left ROH on August 2, 2007, to join Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, leaving Nana to manage a rotating roster of enforcers.[8] Nana announced a "retrenchment" in 2007, signaling a scaled-back role due to financial storyline losses and reduced bookings, which led to sporadic appearances by remnants of the group through 2009.[13] By late 2009, following Nana's diminished involvement and the departure of key members, The Embassy effectively disbanded, ending its original run in ROH after five years of intermittent activity.[7]Reformation and expansion across promotions (2022–2023)
On July 23, 2022, at Ring of Honor's Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view event, Prince Nana made his return to the promotion and announced that he had used his family's wealth to purchase Tully Blanchard Enterprises, rebranding the group as the revived Embassy stable with Brian Cage, Bishop Kaun, and Toa Liona as its core members.[14] The faction debuted in a six-man tag team match on the Zero Hour pre-show, defeating Alex Zayne, Blake Christian, and Tony Deppen in a dominant performance highlighted by Cage's powerbomb and a triple-team finisher.[15] This revival marked the stable's re-emergence under Tony Khan's ownership of ROH, positioning it as a dominant heel force focused on power and intimidation. The Embassy continued to build momentum through the fall of 2022, culminating in their capture of the vacant ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship on December 10 at Final Battle. With Nana's guidance, Cage, Kaun, and Liona defeated Dalton Castle and The Boys in the finals of a tournament for the titles, securing the win via Cage's Drill Claw on one of The Boys after interference from Nana. This victory established the group as champions and solidified their role as enforcers in ROH's tag and multi-man division. The stable expanded its presence beyond ROH with its debut on All Elite Wrestling programming on the October 14, 2022, episode of Rampage, where Cage and The Gates of Agony (Kaun and Liona) lost a six-man tag team match to FTR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler) and Shawn Spears following a hot tag sequence and superkicks from FTR.[16] This crossover appearance introduced The Embassy to AEW audiences, leading to ongoing rivalries, including clashes with The Elite, as the group interfered in matches involving Hangman Page and the Young Bucks to assert dominance. In early 2023, the faction extended its reach to New Japan Pro-Wrestling, with Kaun and Liona competing as The Gates of Agony in international events, though their initial joint appearance with Cage remained rooted in ROH and AEW storylines.[17] A significant evolution occurred on the April 7, 2023, episode of AEW Rampage, when Swerve Strickland announced a merger between his Mogul Affiliates stable and The Embassy, rebranding the combined group as the Mogul Embassy to amplify their influence across promotions.[18] Under this new banner, the stable engaged in high-profile feuds, including against Bullet Club Gold in NJPW-inspired crossovers and The Elite in AEW, where they targeted multi-man title opportunities. The group's championship reign ended on September 23, 2023, at AEW Rampage: Grand Slam, when they lost the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship to The Elite (Hangman Page, Matt Jackson, and Nick Jackson) in a hard-fought match featuring interference and a Buckshot Lariat from Page. This period of expansion highlighted the Mogul Embassy's transition from an ROH-centric powerhouse to a multi-promotional threat.Peak activities and disbandment (2023–2024)
Following the rebranding and expansion in 2023, the Mogul Embassy reached its zenith of influence within All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and Ring of Honor (ROH), engaging in high-profile feuds that showcased their dominance. In July 2023, AR Fox joined the Mogul Embassy as a high-flying addition, participating in matches including against Darby Allin and Nick Wayne at Fyter Fest, before being ousted by the group in late August following internal conflicts.[3][4] The stable clashed intensely with Darby Allin and Sting throughout mid-2023, including confrontations on AEW Dynamite where the Embassy assaulted Allin, prompting Sting's intervention and leading to multi-man matches such as the eight-person tag at Fyter Fest in August during AEW Collision on August 26, where Allin, Sting, Hook, and CM Punk defeated Swerve Strickland, Brian Cage, Jay White, and Luchasaurus. This rivalry culminated in a coffin match at AEW All In on August 27, 2023, where Allin and Sting defeated Strickland and Christian Cage, solidifying the Embassy's role as formidable antagonists in AEW's tag and multi-person divisions. Their momentum peaked with the recapture of the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship on the November 1, 2023, episode of AEW Dynamite in Louisville, Kentucky, when Brian Cage, Bishop Kaun, and Toa Liona (as the Gates of Agony) defeated The Elite (Hangman Adam Page and the Young Bucks) via pinfall after interference from Strickland distracted Page. Key events further highlighted the Embassy's peak, including their interference in the Texas Death Match between Page and Strickland at AEW Full Gear on November 18, 2023, where Cage and Prince Nana attempted to aid Strickland but were thwarted, contributing to Page's victory and escalating the group's aggressive narrative. At NJPW x AEW Forbidden Door on June 25, 2023, the Gates of Agony teamed with Cage and Strickland to defeat Chaos (Tomohiro Ishii, Rocky Romero, Jon Moxley, and Hiroshi Tanahashi) in an eight-man tag team match on the main card, marking a significant cross-promotional showcase of their power. Strickland's pursuit of the AEW World Championship during this period was inextricably linked to the Embassy, as the stable provided muscle and distractions in his feuds with Page and later Bryan Danielson, positioning him as a top singles contender by late 2023 while the group maintained ROH title prestige. Signs of decline emerged in early 2024 amid growing internal tensions, fueled by Strickland's increasing focus on his solo world title ambitions, which sidelined the Embassy's collective goals. The stable retained the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship against The Righteous and Lance Archer at Battle of the Belts IX on January 13, 2024, but lost the titles just four days later on the January 17 episode of AEW Dynamite in North Charleston, South Carolina, to Bullet Club Gold (Jay White, Austin Gunn, and Colten Gunn) in a six-man tag match, ending their second reign after 77 days. The Embassy's dissolution occurred abruptly on the May 8, 2024, episode of AEW Dynamite, when Cage, Kaun, and Liona turned on Strickland during a post-match segment following his victory over Christian Cage, attacking him alongside The Patriarchy to align with Cage's faction in a shocking betrayal orchestrated to weaken the AEW World Champion ahead of Double or Nothing. Prince Nana, who had managed the group since its reformation, expressed devastation in subsequent appearances, distancing himself from the traitors and reaffirming loyalty to Strickland as they vowed retaliation. The disbandment marked the end of the stable's modern incarnation after nearly two years, with the Gates of Agony and Cage rebranding as "Cage of Agony" and initially partnering with The Patriarchy, shifting alliances that elevated Christian Cage's influence while leaving Nana and Strickland to rebuild independently; the former Embassy members have since pursued tag team opportunities, including defenses in ROH and sporadic AEW appearances, but without recapturing their prior unity.Members
Leaders
Prince Nana, born Prince Nana Osei Bandoh to a Ghanaian family in the United States, founded the original incarnation of the Embassy stable in Ring of Honor in 2004 as its leader and on-screen manager.[19][20] Portraying himself as the ruler of Ghana who leveraged vast wealth from national taxes to hire enforcers and extort competitors, Nana orchestrated the group's heel tactics, including attacks on rivals and high-profile mergers to expand influence.[19] His consistent leadership persisted through the stable's initial run until 2009, where he directed promos, financial "tributes," and strategic alliances to establish the Embassy as a dominant force.[21] In the modern era, Nana reformed the Embassy in 2022 upon his return to Ring of Honor at Death Before Dishonor, where he announced the acquisition and rebranding of Tully Blanchard Enterprises into the group, retaining his role as the orchestrating manager.[22] This reformation involved directing the stable's activities across promotions, including crossovers to All Elite Wrestling, and culminated in the April 2023 merger with Swerve Strickland's Mogul Affiliates to create the Mogul Embassy, which Nana described as a "resolution" to unify their visions.[23] Throughout, Nana handled promotional segments, endorsed key members like Strickland in joint appearances, and coordinated extortion-themed assaults to maintain the group's intimidating presence until the stable's activities peaked in 2024.[23] Following the 2023 merger, Swerve Strickland emerged as co-leader of the Mogul Embassy, integrating his Mogul Affiliates faction—initially comprising figures like Brian Cage and the Gates of Agony—under a shared banner that amplified the stable's reach in AEW.[23] Strickland's integration elevated the group's profile through his rising star power as an in-ring competitor and strategist, including collaborative promos where he positioned the Embassy as an unstoppable "conglomerate" and made key decisions on targets and alliances.[23] This partnership endured until May 2024, when the stable's full-time members betrayed Strickland in a surprise attack, effectively ending his leadership involvement. The leadership dynamics of the Mogul Embassy contrasted Nana's flamboyant managerial approach—centered on hype-building promos and cultural flair—with Strickland's aggressive, calculated in-ring dominance that drove the group's competitive edge.[23][24] No other individuals held formal leadership positions, with Nana remaining the foundational figure and Strickland the post-merger co-head until the dissolution.[25]Full-time members
The full-time members of Mogul Embassy were wrestlers who maintained consistent, dedicated involvement in the stable's in-ring competitions and storylines across its run from April 2023 to May 2024. Brian Cage emerged as a powerhouse enforcer upon The Embassy's reformation in mid-2022, aligning with Prince Nana and quickly establishing himself as a cornerstone through aggressive performances, notably in the stable's debut squash win at Death Before Dishonor in July 2022.[14] He played a pivotal role in the group's ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship pursuits, including successful defenses like the September 2023 victory over The Elite on AEW Rampage, where Cage's power moves were instrumental in retaining the titles.[26] Following the stable's effective disbandment in May 2024, Cage transitioned to independent pursuits, rebranding alongside former allies as The Cage of Agony.[27] Bishop Kaun and Toa Liona, competing as the tag team Gates of Agony, joined as full-time members in 2022, bringing a hard-hitting specialist dynamic to the stable's matches in both ROH and AEW, such as their collaborative win for the ROH Six-Man titles at Final Battle 2022.[28] Their tenure included notable cross-promotional exposure in AEW events, reinforcing the group's tag division threat. In a dramatic turn, they participated in the 2024 betrayal of Swerve Strickland on the May 8 episode of AEW Dynamite, attacking him alongside Brian Cage and contributing to the stable's dissolution.[27] AR Fox integrated as a high-flying addition in July 2023, enhancing the stable's aerial offense during its title reigns, including tag team victories like the August 2023 win over local competitors on AEW Rampage.[29] His involvement ended abruptly on August 23, 2023, when he was expelled from the group after a loss on AEW Dynamite, shifting him to independent babyface opportunities.[30] Swerve Strickland became a full-time in-ring leader following the April 2023 merger of his Mogul Affiliates with The Embassy, driving the rebranded Mogul Embassy's elevated profile through main event clashes in AEW, such as his high-stakes feuds tied to world title contention.[18] His commitment culminated in the stable's internal fracture on May 8, 2024, when he was betrayed by Cage and Gates of Agony during an AEW Dynamite segment involving The Patriarchy.Part-time members
The Mogul Embassy (2023–2024) maintained a core-focused structure with no significant part-time members, prioritizing the full-time roster's title pursuits and in-ring dominance.[25]Sub-groups
Outcast Killaz
The Outcast Killaz was a short-lived tag team within the original incarnation of The Embassy stable in Ring of Honor (ROH), consisting of wrestlers Diablo Santiago and Oman Tortuga. Formed in mid-2004 shortly after The Embassy's debut, the duo served as enforcers for faction leader Prince Nana, emphasizing a hardcore, street fight-oriented style that aligned with the group's international heel persona.[10][31] The team's primary activities centered on bolstering The Embassy's presence on ROH's undercard through multi-team matches and faction warfare. They notably feuded with The Rottweilers, a rival Latino stable, including a defeat to Homicide and Ricky Reyes in a first-round tag team tournament match, which advanced The Rottweilers in the competition.[32] A highlight was their participation in the ROH World Tag Team Championship Scramble at Survival of the Fittest on June 24, 2004, where they challenged champion CM Punk alongside teams like The Ring Crew Express and Special K, though they were unsuccessful in capturing the titles in the chaotic four-way bout.[33] These encounters showcased their brawling approach, often involving weapons and high-impact maneuvers in no-disqualification settings.[34] By mid-2005, the Outcast Killaz dissolved after departing The Embassy amid internal tensions, highlighted by a storyline incident where the faction abused valet Jade Chung, prompting the team's exit.[35] Their brief run exemplified The Embassy's strategy of incorporating specialized sub-units to enhance faction depth and versatility on the card during ROH's early expansion phase.[10]Gates of Agony
The Gates of Agony is a professional wrestling tag team consisting of Bishop Kaun and Toa Liona, who formed in April 2022 during their debut for Ring of Honor (ROH) at Supercard of Honor XV, where they defeated the Shinobi Shadow Squad under the initial management of Tully Blanchard.[36][37] In July 2022, at ROH's Death Before Dishonor event, Prince Nana acquired Tully Blanchard Enterprises and reformed the Mogul Embassy stable, bringing Kaun and Liona under his management as the group's core tag unit alongside Brian Cage.[38][14] Serving as the powerhouse enforcers for the Mogul Embassy, the Gates of Agony provided physical dominance in multi-person matches, frequently defending the stable's interests in both ROH and All Elite Wrestling (AEW) programming. They played a key role in the Embassy's six-man tag team contests, including a victory over El Desperado and CHAOS (Chuck Taylor, Trent Beretta, and Rocky Romero) on the Zero Hour pre-show at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door in June 2023, showcasing their international appeal through crossover bouts with New Japan Pro-Wrestling talent.[39][40] Their aggressive, high-impact style bolstered the Embassy's intimidating presence, complementing Brian Cage's athleticism and Swerve Strickland's technical flair after the stable's expansion in 2023. The duo's key achievements within the Mogul Embassy include participating in both of the group's reigns as ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champions. The first reign began on December 10, 2022, at ROH Final Battle, when the Embassy defeated Dalton Castle and The Boys, holding the titles until September 20, 2023. They recaptured the championships on November 1, 2023, during an AEW Dynamite episode by defeating The Elite (Hangman Page and The Young Bucks), retaining until losing them to Bullet Club Gold on January 17, 2024.[41][42] Following the Mogul Embassy's dissolution in May 2024, when Cage, Kaun, and Liona turned on Swerve Strickland and aligned with Christian Cage's Patriarchy faction to form Cage of Agony, the Gates of Agony later transitioned to new alignments. As of 2025, they signed multi-year contracts with AEW in August and have aligned with Ricochet, continuing to compete as a tag team in AEW and ROH.[43][44] The team's dynamics emphasize a brutal, warrior-like approach, with Toa Liona's Samoan and Puerto Rican heritage infusing their performances with cultural intensity that aligned seamlessly with the Embassy's dominant ethos.[45]Timeline
