Mysterious Disappearances
Mysterious Disappearances (怪異と乙女と神隠し, Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Nujima. It has been serialized in Shogakukan's Yawaraka Spirits web magazine since October 18, 2019. As of November 2025, nine tankōbon volumes have been released.[1] An anime television series adaptation produced by Zero-G aired from April 10 to June 26, 2024.[2]Synopsis
Plot
Sumireko Ogawa, a 28-year-old bookstore clerk in modern Tokyo, has long harbored dreams of becoming a successful novelist, a passion reignited by swirling rumors of supernatural urban legends and inexplicable events plaguing the city.[1] Working alongside her enigmatic young coworker, Ren Adashino, who harbors hidden demonic ties to the supernatural world, Sumireko begins delving into these mysteries, driven by her desire to uncover stories that could inspire her writing.[3] The core conflict revolves around kamikakushi—mysterious disappearances attributed to yokai, Japan's traditional supernatural beings—and the dangerous curiosities these entities spawn, which manifest as urban legends with potent magical effects that threaten human lives.[1] Sumireko and Ren form an unlikely partnership to investigate and resolve these incidents, with Sumireko's uncanny ability to trigger the curiosities placing her at constant risk, while Ren's otherworldly knowledge and abilities provide crucial aid. The narrative opens with the initial case involving the Cat Sovereign, a powerful feline yokai whose domain leads to a series of vanishings and confrontations that introduce the protagonists to the perils of yokai interference in human affairs.[4] This is followed by episodic investigations into various folklore entities, such as tsukumogami—animated household objects with vengeful spirits—and other curiosities like illusory songs or elixir-induced illusions, each case blending mystery-solving with high-stakes supernatural encounters.[5] As the story progresses through its volumes, the plot evolves from standalone mysteries to an interconnected lore, unveiling a hidden society of yokai coexisting uneasily with humans and the broader implications of their interactions, including escalating threats that challenge the boundaries between the mundane and the ethereal.[1] By Volume 9, released in April 2025, major arcs reach pivotal resolutions, heightening the overarching tension surrounding Ren's secrets and Sumireko's role in the yokai realm without fully unveiling the central enigma.[6]Setting and themes
The primary setting of Mysterious Disappearances is contemporary Tokyo, where protagonists Sumireko Ogawa and Ren Adashino navigate the mundane routines of urban life—such as working in a local bookstore—while encountering hidden supernatural realms populated by yokai and other entities drawn from Japanese folklore.[1] This juxtaposition of bustling city environments, including streets and everyday establishments, with concealed otherworldly domains underscores the story's world-building, allowing ancient myths to infiltrate modern society seamlessly.[2] Key concepts in the narrative revolve around kamikakushi, a phenomenon from Japanese folklore referring to mysterious abductions or disappearances attributed to spirits or deities, often explained as individuals being spirited away to another realm.[7] Yokai, supernatural beings central to the series, are classified into various types rooted in tradition, such as tsukumogami—inanimate objects like tools or household items that acquire a spirit after 100 years of use, potentially leading to animated and sometimes vengeful entities—and nekomata, cat-like yokai characterized by their forked tails, shape-shifting abilities, and associations with fire manipulation or necromancy.[8] These yokai are reimagined in a digital age, evolving through technology-accelerated manifestations; for instance, in one arc, a retired virtual YouTuber (VTuber) transforms into a digital tsukumogami, its online presence and abrupt discontinuation fueling a supernatural haunting that exhausts fans and blurs the line between virtual and physical realms.[1] Thematically, the series explores the tension between tradition and modernity, as ancient yokai folklore adapts to 21st-century urban Japan, where digital media and technology hasten supernatural events that were once slower to manifest.[1] It delves into the allure and danger of the unknown, portraying human curiosity about urban legends as a double-edged force that invites peril from entities lurking just beyond everyday perception.[2] Additionally, the narrative offers subtle commentary on isolation in urban society, with characters like the disillusioned novelist Sumireko confronting personal disconnection amid Tokyo's anonymity, amplified by encounters that reveal the hidden interconnectedness of human and supernatural worlds.[1] Cultural references enrich the supernatural framework, incorporating Shinto beliefs in animism—where spirits inhabit natural and man-made objects—alongside historical yokai tales illustrated by 18th-century artist Toriyama Sekien in seminal works like Gazu Hyakki Yagyo, which popularized depictions of entities such as nekomata and early tsukumogami forms.[9] The story also weaves in contemporary urban legends, adapting folklore to modern contexts like viral online phenomena, thereby evolving yokai into entities influenced by social media and digital culture while preserving their roots in traditional Japanese mysticism.[10]Characters
Main characters
Sumireko Ogawa serves as the primary female protagonist, a 28-year-old aspiring novelist employed as a clerk at Midori Bookstore in Tokyo. Despite winning a literary award as a teenager, she struggles with creative burnout and supports herself through her bookstore job while seeking inspiration for her next work. Her fascination with the occult draws her into supernatural investigations after she acquires a mysterious grimoire that grants her the ability to de-age herself at will, transforming her from an adult into a child form for disguise or evasion. This power marks her evolution from a curious enthusiast to an active investigator of urban legends and strange phenomena, blending her intellectual pursuits with hands-on resolution of mysteries.[11][12] Visually, Sumireko is depicted with long brown hair often tied in a bun, brown eyes, and a tall, curvaceous figure accentuated by her professional attire or casual outfits like a green jacket over a black shirt and jeans; she occasionally wears purple glasses at home, emphasizing her bookish and introspective demeanor. Her personality is calm, playful, and intelligent, with a kind-hearted tendency to tease others while deeply caring for her allies, though she can be levelheaded under pressure.[11] Ren Adashino is the main male protagonist, an enigmatic 18-year-old (appearing younger due to his baby-faced features) who works alongside Sumireko at the bookstore and possesses extensive knowledge of occult lore. As a "Curiosity"—a supernatural entity born from human emotions and fears—he maintains a secretive existence, initially partnering with Sumireko reluctantly to contain the dangers her grimoire unleashes, driven by his protective instincts toward her and his sister Oto. His background ties him to the shadowy world of strange phenomena, including past connections to other Curiosities, which heighten his personal stakes in resolving yokai-like conflicts and preventing emotional manifestations from escalating.[13][14] Ren's appearance features black hair, slender build, and distinctive narrow orange eyes with swirl pupils that he often keeps closed, contributing to his mysterious and archaic aura; he dresses simply in a white shirt, black pants, and shoes, underscoring his unassuming yet combat-ready presence, bolstered by his proficiency in expelling supernatural influences. Personality-wise, he is calm and empathetic, with a neutral expression masking hidden vulnerabilities like physical strain from overusing his abilities and a subtle sadistic streak in teasing Sumireko, revealing layers beneath his composed exterior.[13] The duo's dynamic evolves from wary collaboration to a deepening partnership, contrasting Sumireko's analytical, literature-driven approach to mysteries with Ren's intuitive, lore-based methods rooted in his supernatural heritage. This interplay drives the narrative, as their investigations into yokai-inspired events expose personal growth—Sumireko's determination solidifying her resolve, and Ren confronting his vulnerabilities amid escalating threats from the occult underworld.[3][4]Supporting characters
Oto Adashino, Ren's younger sister and a middle school student possessing a magical eye similar to her brother's, serves as a key human ally by joining the investigative team and contributing her knowledge of supernatural phenomena during cases. Her tsundere personality provides comic relief through playful antagonism toward Sumireko, such as nicknaming her "Apartment Wife," while her involvement escalates conflicts in yokai encounters.[4][15] Manami Uname, a teacher referred to as Uname-sensei, becomes an ally after a yokai incident grants her the Chinrinki Ogre's powers, including uncontrollable drooling and the ability to immolate via shadows, marked by permanent horn-like nubs. She aids in resolving similar curses for others, introducing subplots centered on adapting to hybrid human-yokai traits and providing mentorship on managing supernatural side effects.[4][16] Additional human supporters include Nodoka Ametsuchi, a student whose discarded tablet animates as a tsukumogami capable of sea-based illusions, and Shizuku, who acquires a watery, fluid form from the "Little Girl in Red" curse. These characters participate in episodic investigations, their personal struggles with yokai-induced changes adding layers of tension and occasional humor through awkward adaptations.[4][17] In later arcs, bookstore colleagues Aiko "Torako" Torasawa and Kyouka Tachibana, introduced in chapter 71, offer logistical support and lore insights as fellow employees, fostering alliances that expand the group's resources for tackling urban legends.[4][18] Among yokai, the Cat Sovereign stands out as a powerful antagonistic entity with a dedicated arc, demanding Ren's departure from her domain and willing to kill to enforce it, though she ultimately relents under specific terms, heightening interspecies conflicts and exploring yokai territoriality.[4][16] Episodic yokai like various tsukumogami—animated discarded objects with distinct backstories, such as Nodoka's illusion-casting tablet or the legless, mermaid-inspired VTuber Yorumun—frequently appear as both threats and reluctant allies, injecting subplots involving object spirits' resentments and occasional betrayals within yokai networks.[4] Other notable yokai include Hon-hime, a spirit tied to historical mysteries, and the Chinrinki Ogre, whose powers create hybrid dynamics that propel character growth through forced coexistences. These entities often escalate stakes by allying temporarily or revealing hidden yokai society hierarchies.[16][4] Up to volume 9 released in April 2025, supporting characters evolve through formed alliances, such as Oto's full team integration and Uname's mastery over her ogre abilities, alongside resolutions to personal yokai-induced mysteries like Shizuku's curse stabilization, which deepen ensemble dynamics and influence major arcs.[18][4]Manga

Yawaraka Spirits serves as Shogakukan's online platform dedicated to seinen manga, targeting adult male audiences with diverse genres such as mystery, drama, and the supernatural, and providing editorial support for creators through its web-based serialization model.[20] The platform has facilitated the manga's steady progression without major hiatuses, though release intervals have occasionally extended due to production demands; notable milestones include the announcement of its anime adaptation in January 2023, which boosted its visibility on the site. Internationally, Seven Seas Entertainment acquired the English-language license for the series in July 2023, with the first volume released in May 2024 under the title Mysterious Disappearances.[21] Localization efforts have addressed challenges in translating Japanese folklore terms and cultural references central to the story's supernatural elements, ensuring accessibility for global readers while preserving the original's atmospheric nuance.[22]Volumes and chapters
