Netrikann
Netrikann (transl. The Third Eye) is a 2021 Indian Tamil-language crime thriller film directed and co-written by Milind Rau.[1] The film stars Nayanthara in the lead role as Durga, a blind former CBI officer who loses her vision and her brother in an accident, and later becomes the key witness to a kidnapping by a serial offender, turning her into his obsessive target in a tense cat-and-mouse pursuit.[2][3] It serves as an official remake of the 2011 South Korean film Blind, adapting its core premise of a visually impaired protagonist using her heightened senses to track a criminal.[4] Produced by Vignesh Shivan under his Rowdy Pictures banner, with co-production by Hyunwoo Thomas Kim, Netrikann features a supporting cast including Ajmal Ameer as the antagonist, Manikandan, and Saran.[1] The screenplay, written by Rau, emphasizes themes of resilience and sensory perception, with Nayanthara's portrayal of Durga highlighting the challenges faced by a disabled woman in a high-stakes investigation.[5] Filmed primarily in Chennai, the movie incorporates elements of suspense and psychological tension, though critics noted its pacing falters in the latter half.[6] Released directly on the Disney+ Hotstar streaming platform on 13 August 2021, bypassing a theatrical run due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Netrikann received mixed reviews for its gripping first half and Nayanthara's compelling performance, but was critiqued for logical inconsistencies and an extended climax.[7] The film holds an IMDb rating of 5.8/10 based on over 3,400 user votes, reflecting its status as a one-time watch in the Tamil thriller genre.[3]Premise and development
Original inspiration
Netrikann serves as an official Tamil remake of the 2011 South Korean thriller Blind, directed by Ahn Sang-hoon and starring Kim Ha-neul in the lead role.[8] In Blind, Kim Ha-neul plays Min Soo-ah, a former police trainee who loses her vision in a tragic car accident and subsequently becomes the key witness to a hit-and-run incident, partnering with a detective to pursue the driver, who is unveiled as a serial killer targeting young women.[8] The film masterfully employs a cat-and-mouse thriller framework, highlighting the protagonist's reliance on her sharpened auditory and tactile senses to confront peril, while delving into profound themes of physical vulnerability juxtaposed against inner resilience.[8] The adaptation retains core similarities in narrative structure and thematic focus, centering on a blind female lead leveraging her non-visual perceptions to outmaneuver a cunning antagonist in a suspenseful pursuit.[9] However, it incorporates notable differences to suit the Tamil audience, including localization to the urban landscape of Chennai with scenes set in local establishments like watering holes, and alterations to character backstories—such as the protagonist Durga, a CBI officer, whose blindness stems from a car accident that also claims her adoptive brother's life, leaving her wracked with self-blame.[5] These changes infuse cultural specificity, enhancing relevance through Tamil societal elements without deviating substantially from the original's tension-driven essence.[9] Producer Vignesh Shivan acquired the remake rights for Blind and announced the project in September 2019 under his banner Rowdy Pictures, with Nayanthara cast as the visually impaired lead Durga.[10]Script and pre-production
The script for Netrikann was written by director Milind Rau, who adapted the core premise from the 2011 Korean film Blind into a Tamil-language thriller tailored for Indian audiences, emphasizing themes of resilience and justice in an urban context.[3] Dialogues were provided by Navin Sundaramurthy and Senthil Kumar Kesavan to infuse cultural nuances, such as family bonds and Chennai's metropolitan crime landscape.[11] Pre-production commenced in early 2019 under the newly formed Rowdy Pictures banner by Vignesh Shivan, in partnership with Kross Pictures, marking Shivan's debut as a producer.[12] Milind Rau was selected to direct based on his prior experience with tense, atmospheric thrillers like the 2017 horror film Aval. This phase focused on assembling the creative team and securing rights for the remake, culminating in the launch of principal photography on September 15, 2019.[13] Casting centered on Nayanthara for the lead role of the blind protagonist, leveraging her established versatility in action-thrillers such as Imaikkaa Nodigal (2018), making this her 65th film project.[13] Ajmal Ameer was chosen as the antagonist, drawing on his bilingual proficiency across Tamil and Malayalam cinema for a nuanced portrayal of the psychological villain.[14] Manikandan K. was cast as the detective, selected for his ability to convey grounded authority in supporting roles.[15] The production operated on a modest budget estimated at ₹15-20 crore, prioritizing practical effects and location scouting in Chennai to enhance realism.[16]Story and characters
Plot
Durga, a former Central Bureau of Investigation officer, loses her eyesight in a tragic car accident that also claims her brother's life, forcing her to adapt to life as a blind woman reliant on her heightened senses and a guide dog.[17][18] Struggling with guilt and isolation, she accidentally overhears and witnesses a kidnapping through her acute hearing while in a cab, becoming the key to identifying the perpetrator—a serial killer who preys on vulnerable women by abducting and tormenting them.[19][6] Determined to seek justice despite her disability, Durga partners with Inspector Manikandan, a dedicated police officer, and Gautham, a food delivery worker who aids in the pursuit, to track down the elusive killer.[17] The narrative unfolds in phases of intense investigation, high-stakes chases through urban settings, and tense confrontations, with tension building as Durga leverages her sensory perception—particularly sound and intuition—to piece together clues and anticipate the killer's moves.[18][20] As the hunt intensifies, the killer turns his attention to Durga herself, making her both hunter and hunted in a personal escalation that leads to a climactic showdown.[17] The film emphasizes themes of justice and empowerment through Durga's unyielding resolve, culminating in a resolution that underscores her triumph over adversity without relying on visual sight.[6]Cast
Nayanthara stars in the dual lead role of Durga and Nancy, portraying Durga as a resilient blind ex-CBI officer who relies on her sharp intuition, heightened senses, and combat skills to confront challenges in the thriller.[3] Ajmal Ameer plays Dr. James Dinah, the cunning serial killer whose twisted backstory drives the antagonist's menacing presence in the narrative.[21] K. Manikandan portrays SI Manikandan, the skeptical yet supportive detective who forms a crucial partnership with Durga, bringing investigative expertise to the story's dynamics.[22] In supporting roles, Saran Shakthi appears as Gowtham (also credited as Saran), a young man whose involvement adds layers to the interpersonal tensions and thriller elements.[3] RJ Ananthi plays Renuka, Durga's sister-in-law, serving as an emotional anchor that grounds the protagonist amid the escalating conflicts.[23] Additional ensemble members include Redin Kingsley as Babu and Lizzie Antony in key secondary parts, alongside others like Motta Rajendran in minor roles, creating a diverse mix that amplifies the film's suspenseful atmosphere and character interactions.[24]Production
Principal photography
Principal photography for Netrikann began on 15 September 2019 in Chennai, marked by a traditional pooja ceremony to inaugurate the shoot.[25] The production, directed by Milind Rau, progressed steadily in the city.[26] By March 2020, the team had completed nearly 80 percent of the filming when production was abruptly paused due to the nationwide lockdown enforced by the Indian government in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.[27] This interruption delayed the remaining portions, including reshoots, as the crew awaited clearance to resume operations. Shooting recommenced in Chennai shortly after the lockdown restrictions were eased in late May 2020, positioning Netrikann among the early Tamil films to return to sets post-pandemic.[28] Cinematographers K. Karthik Ganesh and R. D. Rajasekhar captured the thriller's tense atmosphere through extensive night shoots, utilizing strategic lighting to heighten suspense while emphasizing the protagonist's reliance on non-visual cues.[29][30] The overall schedule spanned several months, culminating in a wrap-up that allowed the film to proceed to post-production despite the logistical hurdles posed by the health crisis.Post-production
Editing for Netrikann was handled by Lawrence Kishore, who assembled the footage to preserve the film's thriller pacing and tension.[27] Sound design was led by Vijay Rathinam, emphasizing audio elements to convey the blind protagonist's heightened sensory perception and immerse viewers in her perspective through foley and environmental cues.[11][31] The audio was mixed by A.M. Rahmathulla to support 5.1 surround sound, enhancing the film's atmospheric tension.[11] Visual effects were kept minimal, relying on practical techniques like blurred point-of-view shots to simulate blindness without heavy CGI, complemented by color grading for a moody tone.[11] Dubbing was completed in Tamil, with Nayanthara providing her own voice for the lead role. Post-production faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with work resuming in late 2020 after an initial pause, and the final cut locked in July 2021 ahead of the August release.[32][33] The runtime was finalized at 146 minutes.[34]Music
Composition
Girishh Gopalakrishnan composed the music for Netrikann, including both the background score and the original songs, drawing on his experience in crafting sounds for thriller films such as Aval (2017) and Nishabdham (2020).[35] His approach to the score emphasized the psycho-thriller elements of the story, which centers on themes of women's subjugation and empowerment, adapting the music to evolve alongside the central character's journey.[36] Critics highlighted the background score as riveting, effectively setting the mood and evoking pathos in emotional sequences, often described as one of the film's strongest aspects.[37][38][2] The soundtrack comprises four tracks, blending melodic Tamil elements with contemporary arrangements to suit the narrative's tension and emotional depth. The title track "Netrikann," an upbeat number sung by Poorvi Koutish with lyrics by Vignesh Shivan, introduces the film's energetic tone.[39][40] "Idhuvum Kadandhu Pogum," a soothing "healing song" performed by Sid Sriram and penned by Karthik Netha, conveys resilience and hope.[39][41] "Po Nilladhe," featuring vocals by Sharanya Gopinath and Syan Saheer with lyrics by Syan Saheer and Karthik Netha, adds a romantic layer, while the reprise of "Idhuvum Kadandhu Pogum" with Bombay Jayashri and Amrit Ramnath builds toward the climax with heightened emotional intensity.[39][42]Soundtrack release
