Simulating an inhomogeneous Poisson point process requires adapting techniques to account for the spatially or temporally varying intensity function λ(x), which describes the local expected density of points. Two primary exact methods are the inversion approach for one-dimensional processes and the thinning (or rejection sampling) approach for multidimensional cases, both leveraging properties of homogeneous Poisson processes to generate realizations efficiently.In the one-dimensional case on the real line over an interval [0, T], the inversion method, also known as the time-transformation method, proceeds as follows. First, compute the cumulative intensity function\Lambda(t) = \int_0^t \lambda(s) \, dsfor t ∈ [0, T], where Λ(T) gives the expected total number of points. Generate points {U_i} from a homogeneous Poisson process with unit rate on [0, Λ(T)], typically by simulating the number of points N ~ Poisson(Λ(T)) and then drawing N independent uniform random variables on [0, Λ(T)], sorting them to obtain the U_i. The desired points {T_i} are then obtained by applying the inverse transformation T_i = Λ^{-1}(U_i), which maps the uniform spacings back to the inhomogeneous scale. This method is exact provided Λ^{-1} can be computed analytically or numerically, and it directly incorporates the intensity function's variation without rejection.For spatial or multidimensional cases in Euclidean space, such as ℝ^d over a bounded region W, the thinning method provides an exact simulation strategy. Simulate a homogeneous Poisson point process with constant intensity λ_max = sup_{x ∈ W} λ(x), yielding candidate points {X_j} with expected number λ_max |W|, where |W| is the volume of W. For each candidate point X_j, independently retain it as a point of the inhomogeneous process with probability p(X_j) = λ(X_j) / λ_max; discard the rest. The retained points form a realization of the target inhomogeneous Poisson point process with intensity λ(x). This approach exploits the superposition and independent thinning theorems for Poisson processes, ensuring the correct marginal distribution at each location.The thinning method is a special case of rejection sampling, where the proposal distribution is the uniform density 1/|W| scaled by λ_max (dominating λ(x) pointwise), and the acceptance ratio is λ(x)/λ_max. Thinning of a Poisson point process involves independently retaining each point at location x with probability p(x), where $0 \leq p(x) \leq 1. The resulting subprocess is itself an inhomogeneous Poisson point process with intensity function p(x) \lambda(x), preserving the independence and Poisson distribution properties of the original process. This operation is a form of independent marking, where marks determine retention, and it holds for both spatial and temporal cases due to the complete randomness of the Poisson process.In the special case of homogeneous thinning, where the retention probability p is constant across all points, the thinned process is a homogeneous Poisson point process with reduced intensity p \lambda. This property, often called the thinning theorem, implies that the number of retained points in any region follows a Poisson distribution with mean p times the original expected count, and inter-point distances scale accordingly. Homogeneous thinning is particularly useful for modeling subsampling or detection errors in spatial data, such as partial observations of particle locations.[37]Superposition refers to the union of two or more independent Poisson point processes \Phi_i, each with intensity measures \Lambda_i. Approximations using Poisson processes
The clumping heuristic serves as an intuitive approximation tool for modeling complex point patterns with Poisson point processes, particularly when events tend to occur in isolated clumps that are rare relative to the overall system size. In scenarios where a binomial point process generates points that occasionally form small, infrequent clusters—such as in large-scale spatial distributions—the distribution of the number of clumps approximates a Poisson distribution, allowing the entire process to be treated as Poisson for analytical simplicity. This heuristic is especially effective in high-dimensional or expansive systems, where the probability of clumping diminishes, leading to near-independent point placements akin to a homogeneous Poisson process.[40]Stein's method provides a more formal and quantitative approach to approximating the distribution of a general point process by that of a Poisson point process, by deriving explicit error bounds through the solution of Stein equations tailored to point process generators. The method constructs a characterizing operator for the Poisson law and measures the deviation of the target process via expectations under this operator, often leveraging Palm theory for spatial settings. For point processes with limited dependence, such as those arising from local interactions, Stein's method yields bounds on metrics like the total variation distance, where the error is at most the sum of local dependence (within small neighborhoods) and global dependence (across distant regions) measures.[41][42]This approximation is particularly valuable for dependent processes like determinantal point processes (DPPs), which exhibit repulsion and are common in modeling diverse subsets or fermion systems, where Poisson serves as a baseline for rare events with low expected point counts. In such cases, when the kernel trace is small, indicating sparse points, the DPP law converges to a Poisson process with the same intensity, facilitating tractable computations for tail probabilities or functionals. Similarly, permanental point processes, which display attraction, approximate Poisson distributions in dilute regimes where clustering effects are negligible compared to rarity. Error analyses via Stein's method confirm that these approximations hold with total variation distances bounded by dependence terms scaling with interaction strength.[43]Practical applications include traffic flow modeling, where vehicle arrivals form a point process with mild headway dependencies, and Poisson approximations capture the overall randomness when traffic density is low and interactions weak, enabling efficient queueing analysis. In weakly interacting particle systems, such as Gibbs ensembles at intermediate temperatures, the empirical point process converges locally to Poisson, simplifying predictions of spatial statistics without full simulation of correlations. These heuristics and bounds extend to broader convergence results for sequences of processes, though the focus here remains on direct approximation techniques.[44][45]
Convergence results
Convergence in distribution of point processes to a Poisson point process is typically established in the vague topology on the space of locally finite measures, where a sequence of point processes \xi_n converges weakly to a Poisson point process \xi if the finite-dimensional distributions of \xi_n converge to those of \xi and the sequence is tight.[46] Tightness ensures that the limiting process remains locally finite, preventing mass from escaping to infinity, while convergence of finite-dimensional distributions guarantees that probabilities for counts in disjoint sets match those of the Poisson process, characterized by independentPoisson marginals with means given by the intensity measure.[47] A characterization of this weak convergence holds for sequences on \mathbb{R}^d targeting Poisson processes with absolutely continuous, locally finite intensity measures, provided the Papangelou conditional intensities converge appropriately.Coupling methods provide stronger forms of convergence, such as in total variation distance, where the distribution of a point process couples exactly with that of a Poisson process as dependencies diminish. Marked and compound processes
A marked Poisson point process extends the basic Poisson point process by associating an independent random mark M_x with each point x \in \Phi, where the marks are drawn from a probability measure \mu independently of the underlying process \Phi.[9] Given that \Phi is a Poisson point process with intensity measure \Lambda, the resulting marked process is itself a Poisson point process on the product space with intensity measure \Lambda \times \mu.[9]The marking theorem provides a characterization of this structure: if a point process on the product space has independent marks that are distributed according to \mu regardless of the ground process \Phi, then \Phi must be a Poisson point process; conversely, if the intensity measure factorizes as \Lambda \times \mu, the marks are independent of \Phi.[9] This theorem, which holds under mild regularity conditions on the mark space, underscores the robustness of Poisson processes under independent marking operations.[9]A compound Poisson point process arises by assigning to each point x \in \Phi an independent random variable Y_x drawn from some distribution, and forming the sum S = \sum_{x \in \Phi} Y_x, which can be a scalar random variable or a random measure depending on the context.[9] If the Y_x are independent and identically distributed, S follows a compound Poisson distribution, preserving the Poisson nature of the driving process.[9]In risk theory, the aggregate claims process is classically modeled as a compound Poisson process, where the number of claims follows a Poisson process and individual claim sizes are i.i.d., forming the foundation of the Cramér-Lundberg model for ruin probabilities. Cox and other dependent processes
