Relais & Châteaux
Relais & Châteaux is a non-profit association of independent luxury hotels and gourmet restaurants founded in 1954 by French hoteliers Marcel and Nelly Tilloy, initially as a network of eight roadside inns and taverns to promote high-quality hospitality and regional cuisine along travel routes in France.[1][2]The organization has since expanded globally, encompassing approximately 580 member properties across 65 countries on five continents, each selected for their adherence to rigorous standards of exceptional service, architectural distinction, and culinary excellence rooted in local traditions.[3][4]
Guided by a 2014 manifesto presented to UNESCO, Relais & Châteaux commits its members to 20 principles aimed at safeguarding cultural and biological diversity through sustainable practices, biodiversity preservation, and the promotion of diverse cuisines as vehicles for ethical progress and environmental stewardship.[5][6]
Notable achievements include fostering collaborations with entities like Slow Food for regenerative agriculture and UNESCO for biodiversity initiatives near protected sites, while maintaining a selective membership process that prioritizes family-owned or independently operated establishments embodying humanistic values over standardized luxury chains.[7][8]
