Safran Electronics & Defense
Safran Electronics & Defense is a French high-technology company and operating division of Safran Group, focused on designing, developing, and manufacturing optronic equipment, inertial navigation systems, avionics, sensors, data processing software, navigation and timing solutions, and space optics for civil aviation, defense, and space applications.[1] With over 19,000 employees worldwide, it maintains leadership positions as Europe's top provider of tactical unmanned aerial vehicle systems and inertial navigation systems, and the global leader in high-performance space and astronomical optics.[1]
The company originated from SAGEM, a historic French firm with roots in precision mechanics and electronics dating back to the early 20th century, which merged with SNECMA in 2005 to form Safran Group, integrating its defense and electronics capabilities into the broader aerospace entity.[2] Notable products include advanced optronics for military rifles like the FÉLIN system, tactical drones such as the Patroller, inertial units for artillery systems like CAESAR, and missile guidance systems exemplified by the Eryx launcher.[1] While recognized for technological innovation, Safran Electronics & Defense has faced scrutiny over past bribery settlements in international deals, including a 2012 French court fine for Nigerian contracts and a 2022 U.S. agreement resolving China-related allegations.[3][4]
