Lineage and predecessors
The lineage of Space Delta 5 traces back to its origins within the United States Air Force, evolving through several redesignations to support space operations command and control functions. It was established as the 614th Space Operations Group on 1 August 1998 and activated on 28 August 1998 at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, under the Fourteenth Air Force.[4] On 24 May 2007, the unit was redesignated as the 614th Air and Space Operations Center to reflect its expanded role in integrating air and space operational planning and execution.[4] This redesignation aligned with broader Air Force efforts to consolidate space-related command structures amid growing emphasis on joint space domain awareness and operations. Further evolution occurred on 1 December 2014, when it was redesignated as the 614th Air Operations Center, focusing more narrowly on air and space command and control while maintaining its core mission of preparing and presenting forces for space operations.[4] As part of the establishment of the United States Space Force in December 2019, the unit underwent significant reorganization. On 24 July 2020, it was redesignated as Space Delta 5, marking the transition to the new service's delta-based structure for mission-specific organizations.[4][5] On 21 October 2020, Space Delta 5 officially changed status to a United States Space Force unit and was assigned to Space Operations Command West, completing its integration into the new branch as part of the broader transfer of Air Force space assets and personnel.[4]Activation and reorganization
Space Delta 5 was formally activated on 24 July 2020 at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, as part of the U.S. Space Force's broader reorganization of space units previously under the U.S. Air Force.[6] This activation coincided with the inactivation of the 614th Air Operations Center, which had served as a key command and control entity since 2007.[7] The new delta structure aimed to streamline operations, enhance agility, and align space forces more directly with warfighting needs in a contested domain.[7] Col. Monique C. DeLauter assumed command of Space Delta 5 upon its activation, marking the initial leadership for the unit focused on space command and control.[6] Under her leadership, the delta integrated into the Space Operations Command (SpOC), the field command responsible for organizing, training, and equipping space forces.[7] Space Delta 5 also reports directly to the Combined Force Space Component Command (CFSCC), enabling seamless coordination of joint and coalition space operations.[7] Post-activation, Space Delta 5 evolved to incorporate the functions of the Combined Space Operations Center (CSpOC), with Col. DeLauter serving dually as the CSpOC director.[6] This integration positioned the delta to provide 24/7 command and control, delivering tailored space effects to support national security objectives through a team of over 450 joint and coalition professionals.[6] The reorganization emphasized a flatter hierarchy to facilitate rapid decision-making and operational responsiveness in space missions.[7] On 12 December 2023, Space Operations Command West was redesignated as U.S. Space Forces – Space (S4S), under which Space Delta 5 continues to operate as a command and control delta as of November 2025.[8]Organization
Headquarters and facilities
