Early life
Lee Da-bin, professionally known as Yeonwoo, was born on August 1, 1996, in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, South Korea.[7] She is the younger of two sisters, with an older sister whose identity remains private.[2] Little is publicly known about her parents' professions, though her family provided a supportive environment during her formative years. Yeonwoo's early childhood was spent in rural areas of North Chungcheong Province, including Chungju and nearby Eumseong, before the family relocated to Seoul's Geumcheon District. This move during her elementary school years contributed to a slight regional accent in her speech, characterized by a slower pace.[2] From a young age, she showed creative inclinations through hobbies such as drawing and immersing herself in movies and anime, which later influenced her artistic pursuits.[2]Education
Yeonwoo completed her elementary education at Seoul Moonseong Elementary School after transferring from Soi Elementary School. She then attended Moonseong Middle School for her secondary education. In high school, she enrolled in the School of Performing Arts Seoul (SOPA) in the Acting Department, a prestigious institution specializing in performing arts, where she received training in acting and related skills to prepare for a career in entertainment. She graduated from SOPA in February 2018.[10][11] Before her debut, Yeonwoo underwent trainee training at MBK Entertainment and Pledis Entertainment, honing her vocal, dance, and performance abilities as part of her preparation for the music industry. This period occurred prior to her participation in the 2016 survival show Finding Momoland.[11][10] Balancing her demanding trainee schedule with high school studies at SOPA presented challenges, but her family's support during these years helped her manage the dual commitments.[11]Career
2016–2019: Finding Momoland, debut with Momoland, and departure
In October 2016, Yeonwoo joined Mnet's reality survival show Finding Momoland, which aired from October 3 to November 21, 2016, and aimed to form a new girl group under Duble Kick Entertainment (later renamed MLD Entertainment). As one of ten trainees, she competed through various performance evaluations, vocal and dance challenges, and fan votes, ultimately earning a debut position as one of the seven selected members.[12] Momoland officially debuted on November 10, 2016, with their first mini-album Welcome to Momoland and the lead single "Jjan! Koong! Kwang!", following a showcase the previous day. Yeonwoo took on the roles of main rapper and visual in the group, contributing to the track's energetic rap verses and serving as a key face for promotions. The debut marked the group's entry into the K-pop scene with a playful, upbeat concept blending hip-hop and dance elements.[13] During her tenure from 2016 to 2019, Yeonwoo participated in Momoland's key activities, including album releases, music show promotions, and international tours. The group gained significant popularity in 2018 with their hit single "Bboom Bboom" from the EP Great!, which peaked at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart and achieved over 672 million YouTube views as of 2025, establishing Momoland as a rising act in the industry.[14][15] They also made frequent variety show appearances, such as on Knowing Bros and Weekly Idol, and embarked on fan meetings and concerts across Asia, showcasing Yeonwoo's charismatic stage presence and rap delivery.[16] The group also released "Wonderful Love" in 2017, an EDM-influenced track that helped build their fanbase through vibrant choreography and live performances. Yeonwoo's contributions extended to group dynamics, where she often highlighted her role in engaging fans during tours and media events. During this period, Yeonwoo began transitioning to acting, making her debut with a special appearance as Kwon Yeo-min in the 2018 MBC drama The Great Seducer and a guest role as Kwon Ji-na in the 2019 tvN series Pegasus Market.[1][10] In mid-2019, Yeonwoo took a hiatus from group activities due to health issues, including social anxiety disorder, which affected her ability to perform. She revealed her struggles with panic and stage fright during this period, leading to absences from promotions for the single "Thumbs Up". MLD Entertainment confirmed she was receiving treatment and support.[17] On November 29, 2019, MLD Entertainment announced Yeonwoo's departure from Momoland, citing her desire to focus on her acting career while remaining under the agency's management for solo endeavors. The decision followed discussions about her future path, with health concerns playing a role in her reduced participation earlier that year. Yeonwoo wrapped up her final group activities in December 2019, including promotional events for the EP Show Me, expressing gratitude to fans in a personal letter for the memories shared during her time with the group.[18]2020–2022: Transition to solo career and early acting ventures
Following her departure from Momoland in November 2019, Yeonwoo shifted her focus to individual activities, particularly acting, while remaining under MLD Entertainment.[18] The agency announced that she would prioritize acting pursuits after a period of recovery from health issues, marking the beginning of her independent career phase.[18] In 2020, Yeonwoo expanded her acting portfolio with supporting roles in several series, including Touch (Channel A, as Jung Young-ah), Alice (SBS, as Tae-yi's sister), Cheat on Me, If You Can (KBS2, as Go Mi-rae), and Live On (JTBC).[10] She followed this with a supporting role in the KBS2 romantic comedy Dali & Cocky Prince in September 2021, where she played an eccentric friend with a unique backstory, contributing to the show's lighthearted ensemble dynamic.[19] These early ventures allowed her to explore diverse genres, building her on-screen presence through nuanced supporting performances. In 2022, Yeonwoo continued expanding her acting portfolio with a lead supporting role in the MBC fantasy drama The Golden Spoon, playing the ambitious Oh Yeo Jin, the daughter of a wealthy family whose character drives key plot tensions in the story of fate-swapping and social mobility.[20] This role, blending mystery and fantasy elements, helped solidify her recognition as a versatile actress transitioning from idol activities. Later that year, in January, she signed an exclusive contract with 9ato Entertainment, signaling a new chapter in her solo endeavors with continued emphasis on acting.[3] During this period, Yeonwoo also ventured into modeling, appearing on magazine covers and participating in brand campaigns that highlighted her visual appeal and growing influence in fashion circles.2023–present: Acting prominence and ongoing projects
In 2023, Yeonwoo took on a prominent supporting role as Jin Yeon-ah in the MBC drama Numbers, which aired from June to July and explored corporate corruption in the accounting world. Her portrayal of a sharp, supportive colleague aiding the protagonist's quest for justice earned praise for its emotional nuance and chemistry with lead actor Kim Myung-soo, marking a step up from her earlier supporting parts and solidifying her reputation as a versatile performer.[21][22] Yeonwoo's acting career gained further momentum in 2024 with lead and key roles across three major projects, showcasing her range in genres from black comedy to historical drama. She starred as the enigmatic Lee Se-na in MBC's Bitter Sweet Hell, a role depicting a multifaceted character unraveling family secrets, which highlighted her ability to convey unpredictable intensity and garnered positive viewer feedback for her immersive performance. Later that year, she appeared as the reliable police officer Hong Cho-won in KBS2's Dog Knows Everything, a lighthearted crime-solving series, where her warm, grounded depiction added emotional depth to the ensemble cast. Concluding the year, Yeonwoo played Cha Mi-ryeong in JTBC's The Tale of Lady Ok, a historical saga where her character navigates revenge and complex alliances, further demonstrating her growth into more layered, mature roles. These consecutive projects, alongside selective modeling work including features in fashion magazines like Allure Korea, underscored her expanding presence in both acting and commercial spheres.[23][24][25][26][27] In 2025, Yeonwoo took on her first leading role as Yun Bi-a, a reclusive CEO grappling with trauma, in the U+ Mobile TV web series Love Phobia, which premiered in June and co-starred Kim Hyun-jin. In a January 2025 interview with Sports Chosun, she reflected on the exhaustion and fulfillment of her 2024 schedule, noting how the back-to-back dramas pushed her to refine her craft while balancing personal well-being. This period reflects her broader career shift from idol-adjacent ventures to starring in sophisticated narratives, with ongoing endorsements and public appearances emphasizing her poise in mature, introspective characters.[28][26][29][30]Discography
